We classify the five-dimensional $C^\infty$ Anosov flows which have $C^\infty$-Anosov splitting and preserve a smooth pseudo-Riemannian metric. Up to a special time change and finite covers, such a flow is $C^\infty$ flow equivalent either to the suspension of a symplectic hyperbolic automorphism of $\mathbb{T}^{4}$, or to the geodesic flow on a three-dimensional hyperbolic manifold.

We consider a real-analytic compact surface diffeomorphism $f$, for which the tangent space over the non-wandering set $\varOmega$ admits a dominated splitting. We study the dynamical determinant

By combining previous work of Pujals and Sambarino on $C^2$ surface diffeomorphisms with, on the one hand, results of Rugh on hyperbolic analytic maps and, on the other, our two-dimensional version of the same author’s analysis of one-dimensional analytic dynamics with neutral fixed points, we prove that $d_f(z)$ is either an entire function or a holomorphic function in a (possibly multiply) slit plane.

we prove in this work the trace and trace lifting theorems for the sobolev spaces associated with a system of hörmander’s vectors fields of order 2. the case of non-degenerate characteristic points for left invariant vector fields on the heisenberg group is also studied.

It has long been known that a number of periodic completely integrable systems are associated to hyperelliptic curves, for which the Abel map linearizes the flow (at least in part). We show that this is true for a relatively recent such system: the periodic discrete reduction of the shallow water equation derived by Camassa and Holm. The associated spectral problem has the same form and evolves in the same way as the spectral problem for a family of finite-dimensional non-periodic Hamiltonian flows introduced by Calogero and Françoise. We adapt the Weyl function method used earlier by us to solve the peakon problem to give an explicit solution to both the periodic discrete Camassa–Holm system and the (non-periodic) Calogero–Françoise system in terms of theta functions.

Conformally invariant functionals on the space of knots are introduced via extrinsic conformal geometry of knots and integral geometry on the space of spheres. Our functionals are expressed in terms of a complex-valued 2-form, which can be considered as the cross-ratio of a pair of infinitesimal segments of the knot. We show that our functionals detect the unknot as the total curvature does, and that their values explode if a knot degenerates to a singular knot with double points.

Suppose that $K$ is a subfield of $\mathbb{C}$ for which the $\ell$-adic cyclotomic character has infinite image. Suppose that $C$ is a curve of genus $g\geq3$ defined over $K$, and that $\xi$ is a $K$-rational point of $C$. This paper considers the relation between the actions of the mapping class group of the pointed topological curve $(C^{\mathrm{an}},\xi)$ and the absolute Galois group $G_K$ of $K$ on the $\ell$-adic prounipotent fundamental group of $(C^{\mathrm{an}},\xi)$. A close relationship is established between

1. the image of the absolute Galois group of $K$ in the automorphism group of the $\ell$-adic unipotent fundamental group of $C$; and

2. the $\ell$-adic Galois cohomology classes associated to the algebraic $1$-cycle $C- C^{-}$ in the Jacobian of $C$, and to the algebraic $0$-cycle $(2g-2)\xi-K_C$ in $C$.

let $\pi$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{gl}_n(\mathbb{a}_{\mathbb{q}})$ with non-vanishing cohomology. under a certain local non-vanishing assumption we prove the rationality of the values of the automorphic $l$-function attached to $\pi$ at critical points. conjecturally, any motivic $l$-function coincides with an $l$-function attached to an automorphic representation on $\mathrm{gl}_n$, hence, our result corresponds to a conjecture of deligne on critical values of motivic $l$-functions.

To any groupoid, equipped with a Haar system, Jean-Michel Vallin had associated several objects (pseudo-multiplicative unitary, Hopf-bimodule) in order to generalize, up to the groupoid case, the classical notions of multiplicative unitary and Hopf–von Neumann algebra, which were intensely used to construct quantum groups in the operator algebra setting. In two former articles (one in collaboration with Jean-Michel Vallin), starting from a depth-2 inclusion of von Neumann algebras, we have constructed such objects, which allowed us to study two ‘quantum groupoids’ dual to each other. We are now investigating in greater details the notion of pseudo-multiplicative unitary, following the general strategy developed by Baaj and Skandalis for multiplicative unitaries.

also, we define a concept of finite geometrical type and prove that finite geometrical type hypersurfaces with a small set of points of zero gauss–kronecker curvature are topologically the sphere minus a finite number of points. a characterization of the $2n$-catenoid is obtained.

For a matched pair of locally compact quantum groups, we construct the double crossed product as a locally compact quantum group. This construction generalizes Drinfeld’s quantum double construction. We study the modular theory and the $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebraic properties of these double crossed products, as well as several links between double crossed products and bicrossed products. In an appendix, we study the Radon–Nikodym derivative of a weight under a quantum group action (following Yamanouchi) and obtain, as a corollary, a new characterization of closed quantum subgroups.

We construct algebras of pseudodifferential operators on a continuous family groupoid $\mathcal{G}$ that are closed under holomorphic functional calculus, contain the algebra of all pseudodifferential operators of order 0 on $\mathcal{G}$ as a dense subalgebra and reflect the smooth structure of the groupoid $\mathcal{G}$, when $\mathcal{G}$ is smooth. As an application, we get a better understanding on the structure of inverses of elliptic pseudodifferential operators on classes of non-compact manifolds. For the construction of these algebras closed under holomorphic functional calculus, we develop three methods: one using semi-ideals, one using commutators and one based on Schwartz spaces on the groupoid.

One of our main results is to reduce the construction of spectrally invariant algebras of order 0 pseudodifferential operators to the analogous problem for regularizing operators. We then show that, in the case of the generalized ‘cusp’-calculi$c_n$, $n\ge2$, it is possible to construct algebras of regularizing operators that are closed under holomorphic functional calculus and consist of smooth kernels. For $n=1$, this was shown not to be possible by the first author in an earlier paper.

In this paper, we prove a certain maximality property of the Shimura subgroup amongst the multiplicative-type subgroups of $J_0(N)$, and apply this to verify conjectures of Stevens on the existence of certain canonical parametrizations of rational elliptic curves by modular curves. We are also able to verify some of Stevens’s conjectures on the characterization of the elliptic curve in an isogeny class with minimal Faltings–Parshin height.

in this article we compare different conditions on abelian schemes with real multiplication which occur in the integral models of the hilbert–blumenthal shimura variety considered by rapoport, deligne, pappas and kottwitz. we show that the models studied by deligne/pappas and kottwitz are isomorphic over $\mathrm{spec}\mathbb{z}_{(p)}$. we also examine the associated local models and prove that they are equal.

We study several types of curves and higher-dimensional objects inside the moduli spaces of curves, insisting on their arithmetic properties in the perspective of Grothendieck–Teichmüller theory. On the way we explicitly identify those curves which were originally associated by W. Veech with certain rational polygonal billiards.

Following a recent paper by Faltings, we study the integral points on $\bm{P}_2\setminus\mathcal{D}$, where $\mathcal{D}$ is the branch locus of a projection from a surface $\mathcal{X}$; a crucial point in the analysis is that the pull-back of $\mathcal{D}$ in the Galois closure of the projection often splits into several components. As in the paper by Faltings, under certain assumptions we obtain finiteness of the integral points (Theorem 3.1); for instance, we shall find that it suffices if the projection is sufficiently general and if $\mathcal{X}$ has Kodaira number $\ge0$ (Corollary 4.1). We have borrowed freely from Faltings’s paper, for the whole geometrical setting. As to the arithmetic, our method is in part different, relying on the recent paper by Corvaja and Zannier and leading to apparently new conditions. We shall also use a more elementary approach to study a similar situation in arbitrary dimension, where the projection is taken from a hypersurface (Theorem 2.1).

In concrete terms, these results deal with certain diophantine equations $F(x_0,\dots,x_n)=c$.
