Sixteen sediment samples were collected from a square grid (4×4) with a horizontal distance of about 150 m between positions in Århus Bay in the south-west Kattegat (14 to 15 m water depth). Critical shear stress (τc) was measured in all samples and related to sediment parameters: grain-sizes, organic matter, water content, porosity, and chlorophyll-a (chl-a) content, in upper layers. Samples were divided into a low (A) τc group and a high (B) τc group in relation to an erosion rate. A significant (P<0·001) difference in median τc was found between groups A (0·0284 N m−2) and B (0·0380 N m−2). Average chl-a concentrations in groups A (1·4 μg g−1) and B (1·8 μg g−1) were not significantly different (P=0·47) but there was a significant and positive correlation (r2: 0·7, P<0·001) between τc and diatom film abundance. Sediment organic matter and water content were significantly higher in group B compared with A, which contradicts that watery and organic rich sediments generally exhibit low τc. This was explained by the presence of a diatom film cover on the fluff layer that inhibits the action of erosive forces. A fluff layer is characterized by a high water and organic content. The fluff layer was present in the majority of the samples but the highest average chl-a content and a significant (P=0·020) higher abundance of diatom film was observed in group B (high τc). Benthic diatoms were dominated by Haslea crucigeroides, Pleurosigma strigosum, and Bacillaris paxillifer. Spatial variability of sediment parameters was high and variability of a stability/erodibility parameter even exceeded those recorded for highly heterogeneous tidal flats. The occurrence of benthic diatoms at 14–15 m of water depth in the eutrophic Århus Bay was supposedly related to a measured increase in Secci depth in the bay and thereby increased light penetration depth.

This study aimed to identify the effects of different sieve mesh-sizes on processing time, the number of species retained, diversity measures and multivariate community analysis in the North Sea. Samples were collected at 63 sites throughout the North Sea and washed through two successive sieves, 10-mm and 5-mm mesh respectively.  Processing time for whole samples (5- and 10-mm fraction) averaged 91± 25 min compared with 55±16 min for the 10-mm mesh fraction. Altogether 40% of free-living species and 9% of attached species were recorded exclusively in the 5-mm fraction. The majority of these species were rare. Spatial gradients of species diversity and community structure were identical, independent of the mesh-size used. Multivariate community analysis showed no significant difference between descriptions of community structure based on fauna from 10-mm or 5-mm mesh.  The use of coarser sieving mesh would save time and money, if the aims of an epibenthic survey were to describe broad patterns of community structure and relative diversity. It would be possible to process approximately 50% more samples, if the time saved with 10-mm mesh were allocated to additional sampling. However, if information on single species is required, then sorting with the finer sieve mesh will yield crucial information. It was decided to employ a 5-mm mesh for epibenthic monitoring of the North Sea.

The ctenostome bryozoan Alcyonidium diaphanum is widespread and abundant in the coastal waters of England and Wales. It was recorded in 77–90% of beam trawl catches in the eastern English Channel and southern North Sea, and in 53–73% of catches in the Bristol Channel and Irish Sea. The maximum catch rates in these two study areas were 1410 and 751 kg h−1 respectively. Alcyonidium diaphanum was most abundant in the greater Thames Estuary. Additional data from the North Sea indicated that A. diaphanum is widely distributed throughout the southern North Sea. Alcyonidium diaphanum was found intertidally in only seven of 99 locations sampled. Several different morphotypes were observed, ranging from cylindrical to lobate forms. The distribution patterns of various morphotypes are discussed.

Structure and climate of the east North Atlantic are appraised within a framework of in situ measurement and altimeter remote sensing from 0°–60°N. Long zonal expendable bathythermograph/conductivity–temperature–depth probe sections show repeating internal structure in the North Atlantic Ocean. Drogued buoys and subsurface floats give westward speeds for eddies and wavelike structure. Records from longterm current meter deployments give the periodicity of the repeating structure. Eddy and wave characteristics of period, size or wavelength, westward propagation speed, and mean currents are derived at 20°N, 26°N, 32·5°N, 36°N and 48°N from in situ measurements in the Atlantic Ocean. It is shown that ocean wave and eddy-like features measured in situ correlate with altimeter structure. Interior ocean wave crests or cold dome-like temperature structures are cyclonic and have negative surface altimeter anomalies; mesoscale internal wave troughs or warm structures are anticyclonic and have positive surface height anomalies. Along the Eastern Boundary, flows and temperature climate are examined in terms of sla and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) Index. Longterm changes in ocean climate and circulation are derived from sla data. It is shown that longterm changes from 1992 to 2002 in the North Atlantic Current and the Subtropical Gyre transport determined from sla data correlate with winter NAO Index such that maximum flow conditions occurred in 1995 and 2000. Minimum circulation conditions occurred between 1996–1998. Years of extreme negative winter NAO Index result in enhanced poleward flow along the Eastern Boundary and anomalous winter warming along the West European Continental Slope as was measured in 1990, 1996, 1998 and 2001.

Predictions that there should be more benthic invertebrates and greater diversity in deeper areas and differences in the spatial structure of assemblages on different types of beaches were tested on two Reflective and two Intermediate (Transverse Bar and Rip) sandy beaches around Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The macrofaunal assemblages of surf zones were more diverse and there were more invertebrates on Reflective than TBR beaches, and there was an increase in number of invertebrates and, significantly, in diversity from 1·5 to 2·5 m depths. There was significant variation in the structure of assemblages among beaches of the same type. Spatial variability in the structure of assemblages on Intermediate beaches was greater than on Reflective beaches. Macrofaunal assemblages varied significantly at a scale of tens of metres across shore, particularly on Reflective beaches.

Evidence is provided that warming of the North Atlantic is responsible for the northward extensions of the ranges of warm water fish species, causing increasing numbers of southern immigrant species to appear off the Cornish coast of the UK. The increasing number of immigrant species is significantly correlated with temperature increases in the North Atlantic over the last 40 years.

The analysis of remotely sensed altimeter data and in situ measurements shows that ERS 2 radar can monitor the ocean permanent thermocline from space. The remotely sensed sea level anomaly data account for ∼2/3 of the temperature variance or vertical displacement of isotherms at a depth of ∼550 m in the Subtropical North Atlantic Ocean near 32·5°N. This depth corresponds closely to the region of maximum temperature gradient in the permanent thermocline where near semi-annual internal vertical displacements reach 200 to 300 m. The gradient of the altimeter sea level anomaly data correlates well with measured ocean currents to a depth of 750 m. It is shown that observations from space can account for ∼3/4 of the variance of ocean currents measured in situ in the permanent thermocline over a 2-y period. The magnification of the permanent thermocline displacement with respect to the displacement of the sea surface was determined as −×650 and gives a measure of the ratio of barotropic to baroclinic decay scale of geostrophic current with depth. The overall results are used to interpret an eight year altimeter data time series in the Subtropical North Atlantic at 32·5°N which shows a dominant wave or eddy period near 200 days, rather than semi-annual and increases in energy propagating westward in 1995 (west of 25°W). The effects of rapid North Atlantic Oscillation climate change on ocean circulation are discussed. The altimeter data for the Atlantic were Fourier analysed. It is shown how the annual and semi-annual components relate to the seasonal maximum cholorophyll-a SeaWiFS signal in tropical and equatorial regions due to the lifting of the thermocline caused by seasonally varying ocean currents forced by wind stress.

We report here an investigation on intertidal mangrove pneumatophores, examining the relationships between arthropod abundance (for ten taxa, mostly belonging to the meiofaunal size-class), algal biomass and sediment cover. There was a strong correlation between the mass of sediment and the mass of macroalgae, supporting the assumption that pneumatophore sediment cover depends on algal growth. These two components of pneumatophore cover were negatively related to elevation, an effect probably relating to desiccation-limited algal growth towards the pneumatophore tips. Total arthropod abundance and that of some taxa (particularly, Uropodidae (Acari), Metidae (Crustacea), Ceratopogonidae (Insecta) and Empidoidea (Insecta)), was negatively correlated with elevation and positively correlated with sediment and algal cover, suggesting a good relationship between abundance and habitat availability. Other arthropod taxa (particularly, Halacaridae (Acari)) however, showed the opposite pattern of relationships. When the pneumatophore cover was physically removed, in an experiment to assess assemblage recovery rates, some arthropod taxa (Halacaridae (Acari), Harpacticoidea (Crustacea) and Ceratopogonidae (Insecta)) had completely recovered by 25 weeks, while others (Tanaididae (Crustacea) and Empidoidea (Insecta)) only partially recovered.

An inventory of fish and epibenthic macrocrustaceans of the surf zones of sandy beaches along the Belgian coast was constructed. The surf zones were sampled intensively with a 2-m beam trawl in April–May 1996 (12 stations) and 26 species were recorded belonging to caridean shrimps (4), brachyuran crabs (5), cephalopods (1) and fish (16). The brown shrimp Crangon crangon dominated almost all samples (>80%). Total densities exceeded several times 250 ind 100 m−2 and 10 ind 100 m−2 if C. crangon was excluded. An east–west distinction as found in other (epi)benthic studies in deeper waters of the Belgian coast, was not found in the surf zone during this study. Spatial variation was mainly correlated with local characteristics such as turbidity of the water and the morphodynamic features of both the beach and the adjacent subtidal area.

Deep or subsurface chlorophyll-a maximum (DCM) was studied at one station in the middle Adriatic from December 1996 to June 1998. Chlorophyll-a concentration, abundance, volume carbon concentration, size-fraction of phytoplankton and phytoplankton community structure were determined. In addition, physical and chemical factors as well as nutrients were determined. The DCM occurs during both the vertical mixing and stratification period in the middle Adriatic Sea. It is most frequent between 50 and 75 m. It is located below the pycnocline and it is associated with the nutricline. Phytoplankton size-fraction and community structure vary seasonally. The DCM is most pronounced during spring phytoplankton blooms with diatom dominance. Procaryotic picoplankton Synechococcus sp. was abundant in DCM during summer stratification. The DCM represents both a biomass maximum and a phytoplankton adaptation to low irradiance.

To elucidate the sulphur sources for chemoautotrophy by the symbiotic bacteria of a vestimentiferan tubeworm, Lamellibrachia satsuma, living in Kagoshima Bay at depths of 80–100 m, we analysed the sulphur isotopic ratios of the animal tissues and compared them with environmental sulphur species collected in the field. Animals that had been maintained in an aquarium for over a year and supplied a known sulphur source were also investigated. The gas emitted from volcanic source in Kagoshima Bay contained rather heavy sulphide (+12·7 to +22·9‰ δ34S) compared with deep-sea hydrothermal vent systems (0 to +5‰). The tissue of the tubeworms contained very light sulphide (−21·5 to −25·9‰). It is inferred from the analysis of the aquarium-maintained specimens that the fractionation by the tubeworm or its symbiont was <1·5‰. The sulphur source assimilated by the tubeworms in the field is therefore inferred to have δ ratio −19·1 to −24·6‰. This means that only 9·7 to 25·0% of the sulphur in the worm tissues can be derived from the volcanic gas and the rest must come from other sources, such as microbial activity in the bottom sediment.

Phytoplankton and microzooplankton community structure and the impact of microzooplankton grazing were investigated during a one-day study of an Emiliania huxleyi bloom off the coast of Devon during July 1999. Vertical profiles were undertaken at four stations, along a transect which crossed from a low reflectance to a high reflectance area as seen by satellite imagery. Microzooplankton dilution grazing experiments, coupled with pigment analysis to determine class specific grazing rates, were performed at two of these stations.

Highest concentrations of chlorophyll-a (5·3 mg m−3) and accessory pigments were measured inside the area of high reflectance. Phytoplankton standing stocks ranged between 1588 and 5460 mg C m−2 and were also highest in the area of high reflectance. The phytoplankton community was dominated by coccolithophores and diatoms in low reflectance waters and by photosynthetic dinoflagellates in high reflectance areas. Microzooplankton standing stocks ranged between 905 and 2498 mg C m−2. Protozoa dominated the microzooplankton community. The protozoan community comprised a relatively even mixture of heterotrophic dinoflagellates, non-choreotrich and choreotrich ciliates in low reflectance waters. However, non-choreotrich ciliates dominated the communities inside the high reflectance area. Of the heterotrophic ciliates, a predatory ciliate Askenasia sp. dominated both non-choreotrich abundance and biomass.

Results from grazing experiments showed that 60–64% of the chlorophyll-a biomass was consumed daily by the microzooplankton. Highest grazing mortality was associated with peridinin (dinoflagellates) and alloxanthin (cryptophytes). Lower grazing rates were found on fucoxanthin (diatoms and prymnesiophytes). Our results indicate that grazing on E. huxleyi in the area of remotely sensed high reflectance was low and highest grazing was on photosynthetic dinoflagellates and cryptophytes.

The life cycles of Clytia linearis and Clytia noliformis, two common campanulariids previously known solely from their polyp and young medusa stages, were investigated. Adult medusae of C. linearis have a bell diameter of 2·5–3·6 mm, and up to 29 tentacles. The bell is almost flat when relaxed and C-type microbasic mastigophore nematocysts form a cluster at the tip of the tentacles. Mature medusae of C. noliformis have a more hemispherical, saucer-shaped bell (3·5–4·5 mm in diameter), up to 16 tentacles, and no diagnostic nematocysts. Polyps of both species also differ in morphology, colour, and cnidome, and a possible resting structure is described for C. linearis. The relevance of characters from the perisarc and hydranths for taxonomy within the Campanulariidae is also evaluated, and whether the size of nematocysts is variable or not, and therefore appropriate for species identification.

Patterns of in situ fertilization success with respect to high and low tide periods are reported for the intertidal red seaweed Gracilaria gracilis which inhabits rock pools. Cystocarp (zygote) production was experimentally compared at high tide and low tide in both high- and low-shore tide pools at two sites using ten virgin female plants. High- and low-shore pools showed different patterns with respect to tide period. High-shore pools showed significantly greater numbers of cystocarps at low tide than at high tide whereas cystocarp production did not differ between high and low tide periods in low shore pools. The possible mechanisms of gamete release are discussed in light of these results.

In the years 1996 and 1997, the pattern of deposition of beached coral heads and pieces onto the shore of Telecom Bay within the Cape d'Aguilar Marine Reserve, Hong Kong suggested that typhoons were a significant natural perturbation. In August 1997, 808 pieces weighing 60,930 g were washed up following passage of Typhoon Victor. 1997 was also Hong Kong's wettest year on record and a survey of the living corals in the reserve in 1998 showed changes in a number of ecological parameters of species richness, composition and diversity but, most noticeably, that the formerly dominant Goniastrea aspera had been superseded by Platygyra sinensis. In 1998 and 1999, this was reflected in the changed proportions of these two beached corals. Dramatically lowered salinities in the bay during July and August 1997 may have effected this change in relative dominance. Following Typhoon Dan in October 1998, 342 pieces of corals weighing 75,600 g were collected. The 1996 and 1997 pattern seemed to be repeating itself. 1999 was a bad year for severe tropical storms and typhoons in Hong Kong, seven being reported upon. Yet, after each one only 12,490 g (Typhoon Leo), 3390 g (Typhoon Maggie), 3550 g (Severe Tropical Storm: no-name), 55 g (Typhoon Sam), 4500 g (Typhoon York and Typhoon Cam) and 3160 g (Typhoon Dan) were washed up. That is, the seven tropical depressions deposited about 27,640 g coral, approximately the same amount as only Typhoon Sally in 1996 (25,000 g) and Tropical Storm Penny and Typhoon Babs in 1998 (24,574 g) and less than half that of Typhoon Victor in 1997 (60,000 g). In July 1996, Cape d'Aguilar was declared a marine reserve, fishing banned in its 18 hectares of sea and ghost nets removed. The fishing ban seems to be halting the dislodgement of corals and they are thus not now being beached by typhoons.

Three species belonging to the genus Zanclea: Zanclea divergens, Zanclea tipis, sp. nov. and Zanclea exposita, sp. nov. have been described as epizoic of bryozoan from the coral reef of the Bunaken Marine Park (Sulawesi Sea, Indonesia). The record of Z. divergens is the second after its description from Papua New Guinea. Zanclea tipis is characterized by a polymorphic colony and a medusa with very extended exumbrellar pouches. Zanclea exposita shows a naked hydrorhiza creeping on the surface of the bryozoan skeleton.

An evolutionary trend among the Zancleidae, from species epibionts of algae and bivalve shells with the hydrorhiza covered by perisarc to species symbiotic with bryozoan with a naked hydrorhiza, is discussed.

Short-term changes in zooplankton community structure and distribution in relation to changes in hydrological features were studied during summer in two distinct areas of Arcachon Bay (France) from July to September 1986. One sampling site was chosen in the northern part of the bay, influenced by oceanic inputs, and the other one in the south-eastern part of the bay, close to an estuarine zone, influenced by the River Leyre's inputs. Three different zooplankton assemblages were identified according to a temperature–salinity gradient: (i) an estuarine assemblage dominated by Acartia bifilosa and Acartia tonsa; (ii) an autochthonous assemblage composed of Acartia discaudata; and (iii) a coastal neritic one composed of Paracalanus parvus, Oncaea venusta and Penilia avirostris. All these latter assemblages remained stable during most part of the study period. However, a brief climatic event (storm event) occurred in mid-August and gave rise to a sharp decrease in temperatures along with significant changes in zooplankton structure and distributions in the bay. The estuarine community vanished and was replaced by the autochthonous community. In the northern part of the bay, the coastal neritic community succeeded the previously observed autochthonous community.  The effect of this brief climatic event was durable since recovery time lasted two weeks with regard to hydrological features and zooplankton communities. In addition, the climatic event also had ecological consequences since it permitted spreading of planktonic organisms from small-localized areas throughout the bay.

This study used analytical flow cytometry (AFC) to monitor the abundance of phytoplankton, coccoliths, bacteria and viruses in a transect that crossed a high reflectance area in the western English Channel. The high reflectance area, observed by satellite, was caused by the demise of an Emiliania huxleyi bloom. Water samples were collected from depth profiles at four stations, one station outside and three stations inside the high reflectance area. Plots of transect data revealed very obvious differences between Station 1, outside, and Stations 2–4, inside the high reflectance area. Inside, concentrations of viruses were higher; E. huxleyi cells were lower; coccoliths were higher; bacteria were higher and virus:bacteria ratio was lower than at Station 1, outside the high reflectance area. This data can simply be interpreted as virus-induced lysis of E. huxleyi cells in the bloom causing large concentrations of coccoliths to detach, resulting in the high reflectance observed by satellite imagery. This interpretation was supported by the isolation of two viruses, EhV84 and EhV86, from the high reflectance area that lysed cultures of E. huxleyi host strain CCMP1516. Basic characterization revealed that they were lytic viruses approximately 170 nm–190 nm in diameter with an icosahedral symmetry. Taken together, transect and isolation data suggest that viruses were the major contributor to the demise of the E. huxleyi population in the high reflectance area. Close coupling between microalgae, bacteria and viruses contributed to a large organic carbon input. Consequent cycling influenced the succession of an E. huxleyi-dominated population to a more characteristic mixed summer phytoplankton community.

A Dipolydora species (Polychaeta: Spionidae) was found in mud tubes attached to the larger tubes of the chaetopterid polychaete Chaetopterus cautus in Peter the Great Bay of the Sea of Japan. The worms were close in morphology to D. carunculata, a borer of various calcareous substrata and sponges described earlier from the same area. The chaetopterid-associated tube-building individuals usually differed from shell-boring individuals by the presence of black pigmentation on palps. However, some of them were not pigmented and appeared almost identical to D. carunculata. Isozymes of the tube-building and shell-boring individuals were compared using starch gel electrophoresis. Two of 16 studied isozyme loci proved diagnostic and unequivocally demonstrated the presence of two distinct species. The chaetopterid-associated individuals are described here as a new species, D. melanopalpa. Unbiased Nei's genetic distance between D. melanopalpa and D. carunculata (D=0·949) as well as the level of intraspecific genetic variation in either of them (D. melanopalpa, He=0·206±0·054; D. carunculata, He=0·239±0·044) are high and comparable to those of other electrophoretically studied polydorids. In contrast to other examined polydorids, D. carunculata and D. melanopalpa have the same numbers of expressed isozyme loci.

An ecological assessment of Fecampia erythrocephala, reporting its habitat distribution, abundance, host specificity, size-specific prevalence, frequency distribution among hosts, effect on host growth, and its site specificity within these hosts is presented. At the Isle of Man and near Plymouth, Fecampia erythrocephala cocoons were generally abundant on the undersides of rocks in the Ascophyllum and Fucus serratus zones. Infected crabs were also most common in these habitats. Both Carcinus maenas and Cancer pagurus were parasitized at similar prevalences, although the former species was relatively much more common in the habitats where the worm cocoons were abundant. Fecampia erythrocephala did not infect crabs larger than 11 mm carapace width, and prevalence decreased significantly with crab size. Prevalences reached 11% in areas where cocoons were abundant. Together with the large size of these worms relative to the size of the host crabs and the observations on worm emergence, these life history features indicate that F. erythrocephala is a parasitoid of young shore crabs. Fecampia erythrocephala cocoon abundance is often high in localized areas and size-prevalence information suggests that worms mature rapidly in these crabs. This suggests that F. erythrocephala is an important contributor to crab mortality and to the ecology of shore crabs at these sites.
