The recent meeting “ARAB STEEL SUMMIT 2007” organized byThe Arab Iron and Steel Union at Muscat (Oman Sultanate) March12-14, 2007 afforded the opportunity to analyze:
The development of the Iron and Steel Industry in the Arab States,The main actors behind such developments,The characteristics, both technical and metallurgical of theseenterprises.

The implementation of the control system overhaul in the gas treatmentarea in CST is reported. The former analogic system with localswitches has been replaced by a Distributed Control System withelectronic interfaces. The results achieved are presented.

CST Energy Model is based on the optimum use of coal in a cokeintegrated steel plant, which needs coal to produce pig iron.Petroleum and electricity almost complete autonomy is achievedthrough the optimum use of coal and derivatives to produce energiesand utilities for inward consumption and sales. Furthermore, theCST Energy Model management brings other relevant results inorder to reduce CO2 emissions and costs.

It is illustrated how computational modelling techniques are used atCorus RD&T as a means to investigate and improve fume emission,air quality and heat control throughout the steel processing route.Some of the recent areas that have benefited from such models are:the redesign of a coater line room, a storage and production facilityand fume capture during iron desulphurisation and casting. Themodelling techniques, the challenges of using such models and theresults are summarised.

The inclusion populations and the relevant inspection methods aredescribed with a particular emphasis on the SEM-FEG/EDS imageanalysis system. Then, the efficiency and the limits of the inspectionmethods are assessed by a new simulation approach.

The Gimbal Top distribution system for blast furnaces was introducedin October 2006. With this solution any burden profile can begenerated by directing the feed material to any point on the furnacestock line. This is made possible by innovative design features whichallow the chute angle and position to be continuously adjustedduring material discharging. The described Gimbal Top Distributor isfit for the high-temperature and high-pressure environment of ironmakingplants.
