The type locality for erionite has been identified and specimens compared with Eakle's original material. New determinations of the physical properties and a chemical analysis have been made. Correlation of X-ray powder and fibre rotation data with electron diffraction of single crystals has shown that the unit cell is hexagonal with a 13·26, c 15·12 Å., space-group P31c, P¯31c, P63mc, P¯62c, or P63/mmc, giving a calculated sp. Gr. of 2·07 and atomic cell contents (Ca, Mg, Na2, K2)4·5Al9Si27O72.27H2O. A structure is proposed for the aluminosilicate frame, with space-group P63/mmc, which gives satisfactory correlation between observed and calculated structure factors for the X-ray fibre rotation pattern.

Yoderite occurs as a major constituent in a quartz-kyanite-tale schist, and is a high-pressure phase formed by the reaction Ky + Tc → Yd + Qu. The monoclinic unit-cell, a 8·10 Å., b 5·78 Å., c 7·28 Å., β 106°, space-group P21 or P21m, contains approximately (Mg2·0Ca0·2Fe0·5Al5·3Si4·0O17·6(OH)2·4. The structure appears to be related to that of kyanite, with which the mineral is intergrown; it is not an analogue of staurolite. The three strongest powder lines are 3·50 Å. vvs, 3·03 Å. vs, 2·61 Å. s. Specific gravity 3·39. Subsidiary reflections, similar to those of the intermediate plagioclases, have indices with non-simple fractional values of k. Optical properties are α 1·689 pale Prussian blue, β 1·691 indigo, γ 1·715 light olivegreen, absorption β > α > γ, 2Vγ25°, optic axial plane {010}, γ:[001] ≈ 7° in the obtuse angle β. An interpretation of the colour on the electron-exchange hypothesis Fe2+ ⇌ Fe3+ + e−, is suggested. A kinetic study has been made of the disappearance of the subsidiary reflections in the range 700°C. to 820°C.; further heating to 850°C. produces the metastable appearance of mullite, and at temperatures above 1100°C. the equilibrium anhydrous assemblage indialite + sapphirine appears.

Specimens of delorenzite from the type locality, Craveggia, Val Vigezzo, Piemont, have been examined and found to be close to tanteuxenite from Australia. The X-ray powder patterns are virtually the same, and the chemical analyses (including the relative abundances of the rare earths) are closely similar.

Zambonini's original (1908) specimens have not been re-examined, but are without reasonable doubt the same as the specimens now described; the considerable discrepancies between the old and new analyses can be explained by the difficulty of the separations. It is suggested that the name delorenzite be abandoned despite its priority because of its association with an incorrect analysis.

Dickite from a new occurrence at Barkly East, Cape Province, is described and compared with a previously unreported dickite from Postmasburg and a dickite from Ouray, Colorado. The Barkly East dickite crystals are elongated in the direction of the a-axis; the ratio of length to width of crystals varies from 3:1 to 16:1. Optical, electron microscopic, X-ray, and thermal data and a chemical analysis are given. The thermogram of the fraction smaller than 2 µ e.s.d.1 is characterized by a single peak at 600°C., while that of fractions larger than 2 µ e.s.d. shows a double endothermal effect. This two-stage dehydroxylation of dickite on heating is attributed to a particle size effect.

Pseudomorphs after olivine in Markle basalt from Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, consist of an intimate mixture of hematite and chlorite, along with a small percentage of quartz. A definite relationship exists between the orientations of the two main constituents and is dependent upon their structures.

Rhodonite, rhodochrosite, spandite, psilomelane, beldongrite, braunite, sitaparite, and vredenburgite from a collection hy Fermor have been studied by the X-ray powder diffraction method. The cell dimensions of all forms of eryptomelane—massive, horny, botryoidal, reniform, mamillated, and stalactitic—are a = 9.82 Å., c= 2.86 Å.. whereas the cell dimensions of shiny pitch-like beldongrite are a= 9.82 Å., c= 2·87 Å. The amorphous admixture associated with cryptomelane is revealed by a broad halo, 4·60 Å. to 3·90 Å., in the powder pattern. Aminoff's crystal data for braunite are discussed with a different orientation, and a new space group, I 4/mmm, is assigned after indexing the powder pattern. Fermor' sitaparite (bixbyite) is assigned a new space group Im3 , different from that proposed by Pauling et al., on the basis of a fresh indexing of the powder pattern. Manganese-garnet from the gondite series has a cell-size of the order of spessartine, whereas the cell-size of manganese-garnet from the kodurite series varies from 11·72 to 11·95 Å. Fermor's spandite from the kodurite series is a mixture of spessartine, grossular, and andradite garnet-molecules with almandine and pyrope as minor components. Ramsdellite and γ-MnO2 or β-MnO2 are found in a number of samples of manganese ores.

Uigite from Uig in Skye described by M. F. Heddle in 1855 has proved on examination to be thomsonite (var. faröelite).
