The dyakis-dodecahedron (641) was observed on certain of the Museum specimens by Mr. Richard Elliot Steel in 1879 and again by myself in 1894; and although several memoirs on the crystallography of pyrites have been published since those dates, this form has not hitherto been recorded for the mineral.

Under the register-number 31679 are a number of small specimens and isolated crystals of pyrites, on three of which the form in question is deve]opod. These were purchased in 1860, and their locality is unknown. They show some matrix of black shale, and, unfortunately, are gradually being broken up by decomposition.

The district round Lustleigh, near Bovey Tracey, is mined on a small scale for a very fine quality of micaceous haematite, which occurs there in well-defined lodes traversing the granite. This soft and powdery variety of haematite, known both locally and in the trade as ‘shining ore’, is used for a variety of purposes, but principally as the basis of a rust-proof paint. The ore and its mode of occurrence have been briefly described by J. S. Martin, and for the purpose of this short paper no fm4her description of the mines in general will be necessary.

Early in 1914 a parcel of copper-nickel-cobalt ore, weighing several tons, was received in London for valuation from the 'Cármenes mine, Spain'. This somewhat vague statement of locality refers without doubt to the group of mines in the district of Cármenes, province of León, situated about 6 km. E.N.E. of Viilamanín, a statisn on the railway from Gijon to León and about 40 km. N. of the latter city. The ores of these mines are described as consisting of sulphide minerals of copper, cobalt, and nickel in a gangue of dolomite.

James Sowerby in his ‘British Mineralogy’ describes and figures sider the head of ‘Argilla electrica’ or ‘White Tourmaline’ a mineral which was undoubtedly phenacite. The specimen was sent to Sowerb,y by a Mr. Herbert in 1804, and was said to have been found in a mine in St. Just, Cornwall. According to Sowerby's description and from the eoloured plate which he gives of the specimen, the mineral occurred as long-prismatlc, colourless crystals , some of which were doubly terminated and lying upon and partly penetrated by mass of prismatic quartz crystals. The crystals were ‘so divided by cracks and flaws in general as to appear of an opaque whiteness in parts’.
