Petrographic and compositional variations in the Lower Main Zone (LMZ) of the western Bushveld Complex indicate changing regimes of magma replenishment. The lowermost unit of the LMZ, designated N-I, is an enigmatic sequence of leuconoritic cumulates, characterized primarily by up-sequence increases in both orthopyroxene Mg# and whole-rock Sr isotope initial ratio. The Sr isotope profile of N-I is ascribed to injection and progressive integration of small influxes of fresh magma with high (Main Zone-type) Sr isotope initial ratios. The basal Fe-enrichment in N-I, on the other hand, is ascribed to a separate, later mechanism involving the downward migration of late-stage Fe-rich liquids. The overlying two units, N-II and G-I, delineated chiefly in terms of basal Mg-enrichment of orthopyroxene, are ascribed to injections of fresh magma into the chamber. Poikilitic orthopyroxene grains in the basal parts of both N-II and G-I suggest entrainment and partial resorption of plagioclase grains from the semi-crystalline resident material into which the fresh magma was intruded.

The crystal structure of macphersonite (Pb4SO4(CO3)2(OH)2, Pcab, a = 9.242(2), b = 23.050(5), c = 10.383(2) Å) from Leadhills, Scotland has been determined to an R = 0.053. The structure has many features in common with its polymorph leadhillite including three distinct types of layers. Layer A includes sulphate tetrahedra, Layer B is composed of Pb and OH, while Layer C is composed of Pb and CO3 with topology identical to that in cerussite. In both macphersonite and leadhillite these layers are stacked along [010] as …BABCCBABCC… The double CC layer is almost identical in the two structures and forms a structural backbone and occurs in other structures including hydrocerussite and plumbonacrite. The sulphate layer shows the greatest difference between the two structures and can be described by a pattern of up or down pointing tetrahedra. For macphersonite the sequence along [001] is …UDUDUD… while in leadhillite the sequence along [010] is …UDDUUDDU… This latter sequence effectively doubles b relative to the equivalent direction in macphersonite. Susannite, a third polymorph, may have yet another sequence of sulphates to give trigonal symmetry; by heating leadhillite, displacive movements of sulphate groups may occur with a conversion to susannite.

The crystal structure of szenicsite, Cu3MoO4(OH)4, orthorhombic, a = 8.5201(8), b = 12.545(1), c = 6.0794(6) Å, V = 649.8(2) Å3, space group Pnnm, Z = 4, has been solved by direct methods and refined by least-squares techniques to an agreement index (R) of 3.34% and a goodness-of-fit (S) of 1.11 for 686 unique observed [|F| ⩾ 4σF] reflections collected using graphite-monochromated Mo-Kα X-radiation and a CCD area detector. The structure contains three unique Cu2+ positions that are each coordinated by six anions in distorted octahedral arrangements; the distortions of the octahedra are due to the Jahn-Teller effect associated with a d9 metal in an octahedral ligand-field. The single unique Mo6+ position is tetrahedrally coordinated by four O2− anions. The Cu2+ϕ6 (ϕ: unspecified ligand) octahedra share trans edges to form rutile-like chains, three of which join by the sharing of octahedral edges to form triple chains that are parallel to [001]. The MoO4 tetrahedra are linked to either side of the triple chain of Cu2+ϕ6 octahedra by the sharing of two vertices per tetrahedron, and the resulting chains are cross-linked through tetrahedral-octahedral vertex sharing to form a framework structure. The structure of szenicsite is closely related to that of antlerite, Cu3SO4(OH)4, which contains similar triple chains of edge-sharing Cu2+ϕ6 octahedra.

Microprobe analysis of marshite and miersite from Broken Hill, Australia, demonstrate extensive solid solution between the end-members CuI and AgI, indicating the possibility of a complete solid-solution series. Unit-cell parameters increase from 6.054 Å for marshite to 6.504 Å for miersite, closely following Vegard's Law. The Cu content of iodargyrite is generally below the limit of detection, but one zoned crystal contained 0.28 wt.% Cu. Crystallization of either miersite or iodargyrite at Broken Hill appears to be dependent upon the local availability and ratio of copper, silver and iodine ions.

The first occurrence of phenocrystic fluorite in a peralkaline rhyolite is reported from Quaternary lavas (agpaitic index 1.11–1.37) erupted from the Greater Olkaria Volcanic Complex, Kenya. Fluorite compositions are almost stoichiometric, with 0.65–1.49 ΣREE + Y oxides. Relative to coexisting glass (melt), the fluorites are enriched in REE, Y and Sr, are strongly depleted in all other trace elements and concentrate MREE relative to LREE and HREE. Y partitions into fluorite more strongly than the HREE. Fractionation of fluorite in its modal abundance would not significantly affect the REE abundances in the residual liquids, nor result in stronger Sr depletion. The P, T and composition conditions which stabilize fluorite in rhyolitic magmas are still obscure.

We present a study on major and trace element geochemistry of some intermediate lithologies from the predominantly basaltic Tibbit Hill volcanic suite in the Humber Zone of the Quebec Appalachians. The intermediate rocks probably formed as lava flows in the volcanic sequence. Their presence shows that this rift-related, c. 554 Ma volcanic sequence is not bimodal (basaltic-comenditic) as previously thought, but consists of a spectrum of compositions ranging from mafic through intermediate to felsic lithologies. The entire volcanic sequence is poly-deformed and generally metamorphosed to greenschist facies conditions.

The intermediate rocks of the Tibbit Hill Formation are trachyandesitic, trachytic and comenditic in composition, and exhibit a wide range of SiO2 content (52 to 68 wt.%). Mg is highly depleted in most samples. Variations of silica versus the alkalis show that most of the samples are alkaline in nature. The rocks display a tholeiitic trend on a standard AFM diagram.

In general, the examined rocks also exhibit a wide range of Sr (15 to 174 ppm), Rb (0 to 156 ppm), Zr (155 to 899 ppm), Nb (18 to 123 ppm), and Y (18 to 94 ppm). The concentration of Hf and Ta are generally low (6.6–14.8 ppm, and 3.3–6.6 ppm, respectively), compared to those of Zr and Nb. Nevertheless, these rocks contain relatively high concentrations of the HFS elements, thus reflecting an enriched source. The suite is also relatively enriched in the rare earth elements (REE), and exhibits fractionated, subparallel REE pattems; the latter are generally uniform and conformable.

Chemical features of these volcanic rocks are typical of those of anorogenic A1 type suites, related to hotspots, mantle plumes, or continental rift zones. This is consistent with earlier interpretation of volcanism associated with an Iapetan RRR triple junction, occurring shortly before the onset of seafloor spreading. At that stage of crustal evolution, alkaline to transitional basaltic magma pierced into the crust, and experienced fractionation to produce the liquids of intermediate composition. Rare earth element geochemical modelling supports the hypothesis that the most evolved composition for which REE data are available (comendite; 67.9 wt.% SiO2) was produced by 20% fractional crystallization of the least evolved trachyandesite (56.7 wt.% SiO2) of this intermediate volcanic assemblage.

This study deals with the kyanite-staurolite assemblage from a metabasite (ortho-amphibolite) in the Chapada area of the Neoproterozoic Mara Rosa volcano-sedimentary sequence of Goiás state, Brazil. It is closely associated with hydrothermally altered rocks and contains the assemblage hornblende, epidote, quartz, kyanite, staurolite, plagioclase and rutile. The staurolite from the amphibolite shows lower values of SiO2 and higher values of MgO, MnO, ZnO and Xmg than those in staurolites from the metasediments of the same area. In the Al–Na–Ca–(Fe+Mg) diagram, the amphibolite plots in the aluminous part of the diagram and the phase volume encloses the area of mafic volcanic bulk compositions. Field relations and compositions in both kyanite-staurolite amphibolite and staurolite are consistent with formation of this amphibolite as a result of metamorphism of metasomatised basalts.

Humite group minerals occur in the marbles of granulite grade at Ambasamudram, southern India. Detailed mineralogical and mineral chemical characterization indicate the mineral is a flourine-rich titanian-poor variety of clinohumite. Average MTi/Si values of 2.22 with typical XRD pattern indicate the mineral to be clinohumite. Petrological constraints on the clinohumite formation shows a high temperature (>700°C) and low aco2 during its formation. The fluorine content of these clinohumites is the highest reported in any environment, with F/(F+OH) ratio reaching a value of 0.70. The high fluorine content reflect the high P-T condition of formation. The OH content of the clinohumites is around 0.59 mole fraction. Preliminary FTIR spectra of the clinohumites show eight sharp absorption peaks between wave numbers 3700 and 3400 cm−1 and a broad absorption band with a peak at 3840 cm−1. The sharp peaks are due to OH in the clinohumite. The high fluorine content of the Ambasamudram clinohumites possibly resulted from the isochemical reactions involving (OH-F) silicates such as amphiboles or phlogopites. The internal fluid buffering is also supported by the stable isotope as well as the petrological studies of the marble assemblages.

Parasibirskite, with the ideal formula Ca2B2O5·H2O, is a new mineral species found at Fuka, Okayama Prefecture, Japan. It is a polymorph of sibirskite, CaHBO3, and occurs as subparallel aggregates of tabular crystals up to 40 × 20 × 3 µm in size. Associated minerals are takedaite, olshanskyite, sibirskite, frolovite and calcite. The mineral is white, and has a weak pearly luster. Optically, the mineral is biaxial positive, α 1.556(2), β 1.593(2), γ 1.663(2) (λ 589 nm). The Vickers microhardness of aggregates is 121 kg mm−2. The mineral is monoclinic with space group of P21/m, a 6.722(4), b 5.437(2), c 3.555(2) Å, β 93.00(5)°, V 129.8(2), Å3. The strongest lines in the X-ray powder pattern [d in Å (I)(hkl)] are 2.237(100)(300), 6.73(70)(100), 2.975(60)(011), 3.354(30)(200), 2.855(20)(210) and 1.776(20) (002). Wet chemical analysis, electron-microprobe analysis and ICP emission spectrometry give the values CaO 56.06 %, B2O3 34.10 %, H2O 9.97 % and total 100.13%. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of O = 6 is Ca1.985B1.945O4.901·1.099H2O, for Z = 1, Dcalc 2.54 and Dmeas 2.50(1) g cm−3. Parasibirskite is formed by hydrothermal alteration of takedaite.

Intense fibrosity develops in wet porous NaCl crystal aggregates (grain size 250–500 µm) held in a temperature (T) gradient field (0.5–4°C/mm) at temperatures between 20 and 50–60°C. In situ microscopic observation of the process shows that fibre growth is associated with T-gradient driven motion of tiny gas (air, water vapour) bubbles present in the saturated intercrystalline aqueous NaCl solution. Gas bubbles move through the intercrystalline pore fluid into the cold direction. They only move if they are next to an NaCl crystal; bubbles that are ‘free’ do not move. Each bubble is ‘pushed’ into the cold direction by a growing crystal fibre of the same diameter as the bubble itself. Fibres apparently grow due to oversaturation of the NaCl solution at the hot side of the gas bubble. Crystals dissolve at the cold side of the gas bubbles, apparently by undersaturation of the NaCl solution there. Thus, bubbles dissolve their way through NaCl-crystals and aggregates. Intense fibrosity develops within weeks.

This report embodies recommendations on zeolite nomenclature approved by the International Mineralogical Association Commission on New Minerals and Mineral Names. In a working definition of a zeolite mineral used for this review, interrupted tetrahedral framework structures are accepted where other zeolitic properties prevail, and complete substitution by elements other than Si and Al is allowed. Separate species are recognized in topologically distinctive compositional series in which different extra-framework cations are the most abundant in atomic proportions. To name these, the appropriate chemical symbol is attached by a hyphen to the series name as a suffix except for the names harmotome, pollucite and wairakite in the phillipsite and analcime series. Differences in spacegroup symmetry and in order—disorder relationships in zeolites having the same topologically distinctive framework do not in general provide adequate grounds for recognition of separate species. Zeolite species are not to be distinguished solely on Si : Al ratio except for heulandite (Si : Al < 4.0) and clinoptilolite (Si : Al ⩾ 4.0). Dehydration, partial hydration, and over-hydration are not sufficient grounds for the recognition of separate species of zeolites. Use of the term ‘ideal formula’ should be avoided in referring to a simplified or averaged formula of a zeolite.

Newly recognized species in compositional series are as follows: brewsterite-Sr, -Ba; chabazite-Ca, - Na, -K; clinoptilolite-K, -Na, -Ca; dachiardite-Ca, -Na; erionite-Na, -K, -Ca; faujasite-Na, -Ca, -Mg; ferrierite-Mg, -K, -Na; gmelinite-Na, -Ca, -K; heulandite-Ca, -Na, -K, -Sr; levyne-Ca, -Na; paulingite-K, -Ca; phillipsite-Na, -Ca, -K; stilbite-Ca, -Na.
