Nũν ⋯δοξ⋯σθη ⋯ Υἱòς τοũ ⋯νθρώπου, κα⋯ ⋯ Θεòς ⋯δοξ⋯σθη ⋯ν αὐτῷ. ‘Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him’ (John xiii.31). Much has been written on the glory and the glorification of Christ in the Fourth Gospel, but grammars, dictionaries, commentaries, and monographs are strangely inadequate, or even silent, on the kindred theme of the glory of God. What does the Johannine Jesus mean when he says that God is glorified? I raise this question, slight as it appears at first glance to be, partly because of its intrinsic importance to the theology of the Gospel, but also because it cannot be answered at all without providing a most elaborate paradigm for the application of linguistic principles to New Testament exegesis.

To survey the extensive territory occupied by the Son of man debate is, no doubt like Moses on Pisgah, to be impressed if not overwhelmed. The formal and theological issues are complex, the literature is immense, and the major questions continue to be so differently answered as seemingly to remain unresolved. It is probably foolhardy to add to the confusion by joining even those on the slopes who are skirmishing around the edges of the problem. This, however, rather than a full-scale attack on the central territory, we must undertake.

In meiner Arbeit über die Christologie des EV (=Evangelium Veritatis) bin ich zu dem Schuß gelangt, daß diese sekundär ist. Als Gründe führte ich unter anderem an, daß sie bzw. die kaum gnostische Auffassung der Person christi in die kaum gnostiche Auffassung der Person Christi in die Voraussetzungen einer Christologie, nämlich in die kosmologie, Anthropologie und Soteriologie, nicht ganz hineinpaßt. Diese Schlußfolgerung wurde neulic zwar angegriffern, aber ich halte weiterhin daran fest, daß die Christologie des EV ein Fremdkörper im gesamten Text bleibt, zumal dasselbe Ergebnis auch für andere gnostische Schriften gelten könnte. Ich werde im folgenden versuchen, festzustellen, daß auch die Christologie oder die Gestalt Jesu Christi im AJ (=Apokryphon des Johannes) sekundär ist. Allerdings werde ich in der vorliegenden Untersuchung nicht mehr die Methode anwenden, die ich in meiner obengenannten Arbeit durchgeführt habe, zumal diese angezweifelt wurde. Ich werde hier die allgemein anerkannte, literarkritische Methode aufnehmen, da uns glücklicherweise vier Versionen des AJ zur Verfügung stehen.
