Phenomenologically, two classes of GRBs (long/soft vs. short/hard) are identified based on their γ-ray properties. The boundary between the two classes is vague. Multi-wavelength observations lead to identification of two types of GRB progenitors: one related to massive stars (Type II), and another related to compact stars (Type I). Evidence suggests that the majority of long GRBs belong to Type II, while at least the majority of nearby short GRBs belong to Type I. Nonetheless, counter examples do exist. Both long-duration Type I and short-duration Type II GRBs have been observed. In this talk, I review the complications in GRB classification and efforts in diagnosing GRB progenitors based on multiple observational criteria. In particular, I raise the caution to readily accept that all short/hard GRBs detected by BATSE are due to compact star mergers. Finally, I propose to introduce “amplitude” as the third dimension (besides “duration” and “hardness”) to quantify burst properties, and point out that the “tip-of-the-iceberg” effect may introduce confusion in defining the physical category of GRBs, especially for low-amplitude, high-redshift GRBs.

Commission 53 was created at the 2006 Prague General Assembly (GA) of the IAU, in recognition of the outburst of astronomical progress in the field of extrasolar planet discovery, characterization, and theoretical work that has occurred since the discovery of the first planet in orbit around a solar-type star in 1995. Commission 53 is the logical successor to the IAU Working Group on Extrasolar Planets (WGESP), which ended its six years of existence in August 2006. The founding President of Commission 53 was Michael Mayor, in honor of his seminal contributions to this new field of astronomy. The current President is Alan Boss, the former chair of the WGESP. The current members of the Commission 53 (C53) Organizing Committee (OC) began their service in August 2009 at the conclusion of the Rio de Janeiro IAU GA.

We present new spectro-photometric NIR observations of 16 post-starburst galaxies especially designed to test for the presence of strong carbon features of thermally pulsing AGB (TP-AGB) stars, as predicted by recent models of stellar population synthesis. Selection based on clear spectroscopic optical features indicating the strong predominance of stellar populations with ages between 0.5 and 1.5 Gyr and redshift around 0.2 allows us to probe the spectral region that is most affected by the carbon features of TP-AGB stars (unaccessible from the ground for z ~ 0 galaxies) in the evolutionary phase when their impact on the IR luminosity is maximum. Nevertheless, none of the observed galaxies display such features. Moreover the NIR fluxes relative to optical are consistent with those predicted by the original Bruzual & Charlot (2003) models, where the impact of TP-AGB stars is much lower than has been recently advocated.

The diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) hosts the first steps of interstellar chemistry and the seeds of dense structures. Since its turbulent pressure by far exceeds its thermal pressure, turbulence must play a prominent role in its evolution. Fed at galactic scales, turbulent energy cascades down to the dissipation scales, but as in both laboratory and atmospheric turbulence, it does so in an intermittent way : only a tiny fraction of the small-scales is fed by the turbulent cascade, so that dissipation occurs in bursts. In diffuse molecular clouds, where they can be observed, the signatures of intermittency are: (1) the non-Gaussian statistics of velocity increments, and (2) the existence of coherent structures of intense velocity-shear that appear to channel the large-scale turbulent energy down to milliparsec scales. Attempts at modelling the warm chemistry triggered in the diffuse ISM by bursts of turbulent dissipation are promising : in this framework, the so far unexplained molecular richness observed in this medium is naturally understood, in particular its CH+, HCO+ and CO abundances. Turbulent dissipation is also likely at the origin of the H2 rotational line emission of the diffuse ISM and of a significant fraction of its [C II] emission.

We provide a history and description of the Inca archaeological complex of Choquequirao, located high on a narrow ridge above the Apurimac River in a remote region of the Vilcabamba of Peru. We suggest that Choquequirao was built as a royal estate during the late 15th century by the Inca ruler, Topa Inca Yupanki, modeled after Machu Picchu. It was built in part by workers imported from Cachapoyas in Northern Peru. The site has alignments with the June and December solstices suggesting a strong solar focus and year-round ceremonial activities. A large truncated hill served as a ceremonial platform or ushnu. The platform was accessed through a double-jamb entranceway, indicating that passage was probably limited to those of high status. We suspect Choquequirao functioned as a ceremonial center. It shares with Machu Picchu the remoteness, ‘other worldliness’, and liminality that are found in many pilgrimage centers of the world. Though Choquequirao, high above the Apurimac River, has a location that is equally as dramatic as Machu Picchu, it lacks the formable geological material required to create imperial-style monumental structures and shaped stone huacas. Choquequirao was occupied during the early colonial years by the Neo-Inca, and was abandoned sometime after the death of the last Inca in 1572. It is a fascinating puzzle that Spanish travelers of the time apparently never reached or described this major Inca complex, which was the most impressive in the Vilcabamba. Somehow, the Inca managed to keep it secret although relatives and others journeyed back and forth to colonial Cusco.

In the framework of the EVRENA project, high-resolution spectra of northern eclipsing close binaries in stellar groups are obtained with the HERMES Echelle spectrograph at the Mercator telescope (Roque de los Muchachos Observatory). This contribution gives the first results on DV Camelopardalis.

Good measurements of visual binary stars (position angle and angular separation) have been made for nearly 200 years. Radial-velocity observers have exhibited less patience; when the orbital periods of late-type stars in the catalogue published in 1978 are sorted into bins half a logarithmic unit wide, the modal bin is the one with periods between 3 and 10 days. The same treatment of the writer's orbits shows the modal bin to be the one between 1000 and 3000 days. Of course the spectroscopists cannot quickly catch up the 200 years that the visual observers have been going, but many spectroscopic orbits with periods of decades, and a few of the order of a century, have been published. Technical developments have also been made in ‘visual’ orbit determination, and orbits with periods of only a few days have been determined for certain ‘visual’ binaries. In principle, therefore, the time domains of visual and spectroscopic binaries now largely overlap. Overlap is essential, as it is only by combining both techniques that orbits can be determined in three dimensions, as is necessary for the important objective of determining stellar masses accurately. Nevertheless the actual overlap—objects with accurate measurements by both techniques—remains disappointingly small. There have, however, been unforeseen benefits from the observation of spectroscopic binaries that have unconventionally long orbital periods, not a few of which have proved to be interesting and significant objects in their own right. It has also been shown that binary membership is more common than was once thought (orbits have even been determined for some of the IAU standard radial-velocity stars!); a recent study of the radial velocities of K giants that had been monitored for 45 years found a binary incidence of 30%, whereas a figure of 13.7% was given as recently as 2005 for a similar group.

Magnetic clouds (MCs) are objects of extreme importance in the heliosphere. They have a major role on releasing magnetic helicity from the Sun (with crucial consequences on the solar dynamo), they are the hugest transient object in the interplanetary medium, and the main actors for the Sun-Earth coupling. The comparison between models and observations is beginning to clarify several open questions on MCs, such as their internal magnetic configuration and their interaction with the ambient solar wind. Due to the decay of the solar wind pressure with the distance to the Sun, MCs are typically in expansion. However, their detailed and local expansion properties depend on their environment plasma properties. On the other hand, while it is well known that the solar cycle determines several properties of the heliosphere, the effects of the cycle on MC properties are not so well understood. In this work we review two major properties of MCs: (i) their expansion, and (ii) the magnetic flux and helicity that they transport through the interplanetary medium. We find that the amount of magnetic flux and helicity released via MCs during the last solar minimum (years 2007-2009) was significantly lower than in the previous one (years 1995-1997). Moreover, both MC size and mean velocity are in phase with the solar cycle while the expansion rate is weakly variable and has no relationship with the cycle.

Many binary star systems are not wide enough to contain the progenitor stars from which they were made. One explanation for this is that when one star becomes a red giant a common envelope forms around both stars in the binary system. The core of the giant and its companion star continue to orbit one another inside the envelope. Frictional energy deposited into the common envelope may lead to its ejection and, if so, a close binary system is formed from the core of the former giant star and its relatively untouched companion. When the primary is an asymptotic giant branch star the core becomes a hot carbon-oxygen white dwarf which may ionise the ejected envelope and illuminate a planetary nebula. Many other types of binary systems form through common envelope evolution such as low-mass X-ray binaries and cataclysmic variables. In the case of a failed envelope ejection when the cores merge, rapidly-rotating solitary giants similar to FK Comae stars form. In this short review we focus on attempts to constrain parameters of common envelope evolution models and also describe the latest efforts to model this elusive phase of binary stellar evolution.

Some Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are suggested to have progenitor white dwarfs (WDs) with mass of up to 2.4–2.8 M⊙, highly exceeding the Chandrasekhar mass limit. We present a new single degenerate (SD) model for SNe Ia progenitors, in which the WD mass can increase by accretion up to 2.3 (2.7) M⊙ from the initial value of 1.1 (1.2) M⊙. The results are consistent with high luminosity SNe Ia such as SN 2003fg, SN 2006gz, SN 2007if, and SN 2009dc. There are three characteristic mass ranges of exploding WDs. In an extreme massive case, differentially rotating WDs explode as a SNe Ia soon after the WD mass exceeds 2.4 M⊙ because of a secular instability at T/|W|~0.14. For a mid mass range of MWD=1.5–2.4 M⊙, which is supported by differential rotation, it takes some spinning-down time until carbon is ignited to induce an SN Ia explosion. For a lower mass range of MWD=1.38–1.5 M⊙, they can be supported by rigid rotation until the angular momentum is lost. We also suggest the ultra super-Chandrasekhar mass SNe Ia are born in young and low metallicity environments.

The power of population synthesis as a mean to estimate the star-formation and chemical histories of galaxies has been well established in the last decade. The major developments were due to a huge avalanche of methods, codes and high-quality galaxy data sets, such as the 2dF, 6dF and SDSS surveys. Semi-empirical spectral synthesis allows for the decomposition of a galaxy spectrum in terms of linear combinations of base elements, i.e. Single Stellar Populations (SSPs) of different ages and metallicities, which are computed from evolutionary synthesis codes (BPASS, GALEV, GALAXEV, MILES, PÉGASE, etc. . .), containing distinct ingredients like: stellar library, evolutionary tracks, metallicities and Initial Mass Function. In general, they have solar-scaled relative abundances, but this is about to change with the unfolding of new α-enhanced SSP models (Coelho et al. 2007). However, passive galaxies have some spectral features corresponding to “enhanced-ratios” ([E/Fe]), like O, Ne, Si, S, Mg, Na, C and N over Fe that are not well modeled using solar-scaled SSPs (Trager et al. 2000), leading to residuals between observed and modeled spectra, which also correlate with the velocity dispersion (σ*) and stellar mass (M*): Massive galaxies exhibit a larger [E/Fe] discrepancy than less massive ones. This result can be interpreted as a signature of distinct previous star-formation efficiencies in passive galaxies, leading to distinctive ratios of type Ia and II SNe.

We have applied the starlight spectral synthesis code (Cid Fernandes et al. 2005) to a sample of ~ 1000 passive galaxies from the SDSS DR7 with a S/N at the continuum ≥ 20 to investigate possible enhancements in the derived [E/Fe] ratios. Three sets of SSPs based on Coelho et al. (2007) theoretical models and Walcher et al. (2009) prescriptions were computed for [α/Fe]=0.0, [α/Fe]=0.2 and [α/Fe]=0.4. Our aim is to determine: (1) the quality of the fits, (2) the mean stellar age and metallicity distributions, and (3) the star-formation history of passive galaxies.

Using [α/Fe]=0.0 SSPs, we have identified the strongest residuals in the CN (4142.125-4177.125 Å), Na D (5876.875-5909.375 Å) and Mg (5069.125-5196.625 Å) bands. On the other hand, [α/Fe]=0.2 and [α/Fe]=0.4 SSP models tend to reproduce better the Mg band, as compared to solar-scaled SSPs ([α/Fe]=0.0). The residuals are decreased by 1.77 Å ([α/Fe]=0.2) and 2.92 Å ([α/Fe]=0.4). However, as expected, these α--enhanced models lead to worse fits for the CN and Na D bands. These residuals may even reach up to 2.08 Å (CN) and 4.20 Å (Na D), using [α/Fe]=0.2 SSPs and 2.28 Å (CN) and 7.94 Å (Na D), using [α/Fe]=0.4 SSPs.

In terms of mean stellar ages and metallicities, we obtain non-negligible biases in both quantities when we compare the solar-scaled SSPs with α-enhanced ones, which tend to have mean stellar ages by 0.12 dex ([α/Fe]=0.2) and 0.14 dex ([α/Fe]=0.4) higher and mean stellar metallicities by 0.1 dex ([α/Fe]=0.2) and 0.2 dex ([α/Fe]=0.4) lower.

Connecting the endpoints of massive star evolution with the various types of core-collapse supernovae (SNe) is ultimately the fundamental puzzle to be explored and solved. We can assemble clues indirectly, e.g., from information about the environments in which stars explode and establish constraints on the evolutionary phases of these stars. However, this is best accomplished through direct identification of the actual star that has exploded in pre-supernova imaging, preferably in more than one photometric band, where color and luminosity for the star can be precisely measured. We can then interpret the star's properties in light of expectations from the latest massive stellar evolutionary models, to attempt to assign an initial mass to the progenitor. So far, this has been done most successfully for SNe II-P, for which we now know that red supergiants in a relatively limited initial mass range are responsible. More recently, we have limited examples of the progenitors of SNe II-L, IIn, and IIb. The progenitors of SNe Ib and Ic, however, have been elusive so far; I will discuss the current status of our knowledge of this particular channel.

Seen from the ‘ushnu’ platform in the palatial complex of Pueblo Viejo–Pucará, near Pachacamac, built by the Huarochirí people, the visual axis extends southwards towards two circular structures of the summit temple. Of these structures rising up from a monumental platform, one contains a sacred rock to which gold, silver and Spondylus princeps. were offered and the other housed a huanca-idol. These structures, and the ushnu, marked points and directions that are relevant for the organization of sacred geography, but whose location does not correspond to orientations that are astronomically relevant for calendrical calculations, contrary to the initial hypothesis.

Remarkable progress in the understanding of nova outbursts has been achieved through combined efforts in photometry, spectroscopy and numerical simulations. According to the thermonuclear runaway model, novae are powered by thermonuclear explosions in the hydrogen-rich envelopes transferred from a low-mass stellar companion onto a close white dwarf star. Extensive numerical simulations in 1-D have shown that the accreted envelopes attain peak temperatures ranging between 108 and 4 × 108 K, for about several hundred seconds, hence allowing extensive nuclear processing which eventually shows up in the form of nucleosynthetic fingerprints in the ejecta. Indeed, it has been claimed that novae can play a certain role in the enrichment of the interstellar medium through a number of intermediate-mass elements. This includes 17O, 15N, and 13C, systematically overproduced with respect to solar abundances, plus a lower contribution in a number of other species (A < 40), such as 7Li, 19F, or 26Al. At the turn of the XXI Century, classical novae have entered the era of multidimensional models, which provide a new insight into the physical mechanisms that drive mixing at the core-envelope interface.

In this review, we will present hydrodynamic models of classical novae, from the onset of accretion up to the explosion and ejection stages, both for classical and recurrent novae, with special emphasis on their gross observational properties and their associated nucleosynthesis. The impact of nuclear uncertainties on the final yields will be discussed. Recent results from 2-D models of mixing during classical nova outbursts will also be presented.

We have investigated two full solar rotations belonging to two distinct solar minima, in the frame of two coordinated observational and research campaigns. The nearly uninterrupted gathering of solar coronal data since the beginning of the SOHO era offers the exceptional possibility of comparing two solar minima for the first time, with regard to coronal transients. This study characterizes the variety of outward-travelling transients observed in the solar corona during both time intervals, from very narrow jet-like events to coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Their solar source regions and ensuing interplanetary structures were identified and characterized. Multi-wavelength images from the space missions SOHO, Yohkoh and STEREO, and ground-based observatories were studied for coronal ejecta and their solar sources, while in situ data registered by the ACE spacecraft were inspected for interplanetary CMEs and magnetic clouds. Instrumental aspects such as dissimilar resolution, cadence, and fields of view are considered in order to discern instrumentally-driven disparities from inherent differences between solar minima.

We present the results of 3D hydrodynamic simulations aimed to explore the binary scenario for shaping bipolar, point- and mirror-symmetric proto-Planetary Nebulae. We consider a jet launched by the secondary star of a binary system, located at the center of the PPN, which propagates within a circumstellar medium swept previously up by the wind of the giant companion. As a result of the presence of the companion star, the accretion disk around the jet source is likely to precess. We have carried out 3D hydrodynamical simulations with the YGUAZÚ-A code including the combination of an orbital motion plus a precession. Our results show that to produce a multipolar nebula, it is necessary to have a precessing jet in a binary system with a time-dependent ejection velocity.

The main goal of this work was to find dependencies between Fourier coefficients, which were developed by light curve fitting with Fourier polynomials. The light curves were acquired from the ASAS database (All Sky Automated Survey). In this statistical research it was necessary to sort and modify these data, because light curves of eclipsing binaries are just part of a bigger database, which contains the light curves of pulsating variable stars, novas etc. It was required to phase and normalize all of our light curves, that it could be possible to use a program to fit light curves with Fourier coefficients. Thereafter, we were looking for relations between Fourier coefficients.

Astronomical time series are special in that time sampling in them is uneven yet often with periodic gaps due to daytime, moon and seasons. There is therefore a need for special-purpose time-series analysis (TSA) methods. The emergence of massive CCD photometric surveys from the ground and space raises the question of an automatic period search in ≫ 105 light curves. We caution that already at the planning stage it is important to account for the effects of time sampling and analysis methods on the sensitivity of detections. We present a transparent scheme for the classification of period-search methods. We employ tools for evaluating the performance of those methods, according to the type of light curves investigated. In particular we consider sinusoidal and non-sinusoidal oscillations as well as eclipse or transit light curves. From these considerations we draw recommendations for the optimum analysis of astronomical time series. We present briefly the capability of an automatic period-search package Tatry. Finally we discuss the role of Monte Carlo simulations in the analysis of detection sensitivity. As an example, we demonstrate a practical method to account for the bandwidth (multi-trial) penalty in the statistical evaluation of detected periods.

The late stages of stellar evolution from the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) to planetary nebulae represent the most active phase of molecular synthesis in a star's life. Over 60 molecular species, including inorganics, organics, radicals, chains, rings, and molecular ions have been detected in the circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars. Most interestingly, complex organic compounds of aromatic and aliphatic structures are synthesized over very short time intervals after the end of the AGB. Also appeared during the post-AGB evolution are the unidentified 21 and 30 μm emission features, which are believed to originate from carbonaceous compounds.

The circumstellar environment is an ideal laboratory for the testing of theories of chemical synthesis. The distinct spectral behavior among AGB stars, proto-planetary nebulae (PPN), and planetary nebulae (PN) and the short evolutionary time scales that separate these stages pose severe constraints on models. In this paper, we will present an observational summary of the chemical synthesis in the late stages of stellar evolution, discuss chemical and physical processes at work, and speculate on the possible effects these chemical products have on the Galaxy and the Solar System.

Following its meeting in May, 2010, the IAU Executive Committee requested that a Working Group on NEOs within Div. III be re-activated and carry out the following activities:

1. a) investigate and formulate requirements for an international ground- and/or space-based NEO survey, to detect, track and characterize (optical/IR, radar) 90% of all NEOs with D >40 m and to establish as such a permanent International NEO Early Warning System; to submit to the President, Vice-President and OC of Division III by March 31, 2011, a progress report and by March 31, 2012, a final report on this matter, to be forwarded to the President and General Secretary of the IAU;

2. b) assemble a SOC in order to write and submit to the IAU Assistant General Secretary before December 1, 2010, a proposal for a GA IAU Symposium or a GA Special Session, to be held during the IAU XXVIII General Assembly, August 20-31, 2012 in Beijing, on theoretical and observational aspects of NEO research in general, and on requirements and other aspects of a permanent International NEO Early Warning System in particular;

3. c) prepare and submit to the IAU General Secretary by January 31, 2012, a Resolution for consideration by the IAU XXVIII General Assembly in Beijing, August 2012, asking for international action and support to establish an International NEO Early Warning System; such a Resolution, if accepted by the IAU XXVIII General Assembly, to be addressed to the IAU National Members, to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN-COPUOS), and to the International Council for Science (ICSU).
