An enormous solar tornado was observed by SDO/AIA on 25 September 2011. It was mainly associated with a quiescent prominence with an overlying coronal cavity. We investigate the triggering mechanism of the solar tornado by using the data from two instruments: SDO/AIA and STEREO-A/EUVI, covering the Sun from two directions. The tornado appeared near to the active region NOAA 11303 that produced three flares. The flares directly influenced the prominence-cavity system. The release of free magnetic energy from the active region by flares resulted in the contraction of the active region field. The cavity, owing to its superior magnetic pressure, expanded to fill this vacated space in the corona. We propose that the tornado developed on the top of the prominence due to the expansion of the prominence-cavity system.

We perform a spectroscopic analysis of 492,450 galaxy spectra from the first two years of observations of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III/Baryonic Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) collaboration. This data set has been released in the ninth SDSS data release, the first public data release of BOSS spectra. We show that the typical signal-to-noise ratio of BOSS spectra is sufficient to measure stellar velocity dispersion and emission line fluxes for individual objects. The typical velocity dispersion of a BOSS galaxy is 240 km/s, with an accuracy of better than 30 per cent for 93 per cent of BOSS galaxies. The distribution in velocity dispersion is redshift independent between redshifts 0.15 and 0.7, which reflects the survey design targeting massive galaxies with an approximately uniform mass distribution in this redshift interval. The majority of BOSS galaxies lack detectable emission lines. We analyse the emission line properties and present diagnostic diagrams using the emission lines [OII], Hβ, [OIII], Halpha, and [NII] (detected in about 4 per cent of the galaxies). We show that the emission line properties are strongly redshift dependent and that there is a clear correlation between observed frame colours and emission line properties. Within in the low-z sample around 0.15 < z < 0.3, half of the emission-line galaxies have LINER-like emission line ratios, followed by Seyfert-AGN dominated spectra, and only a small fraction of a few per cent are purely star forming galaxies. AGN and LINER-like objects, instead, are less prevalent in the high-z sample around 0.4 < z < 0.7, where more than half of the emission line objects are star forming. This is a pure selection effect caused by the non-detection of weak Hβ emission lines in the BOSS spectra. Finally, we show that star forming, AGN and emission line free galaxies are well separated in the g - r vs r - i target selection diagram.

We present the internal proper motion of 6.7-GHz methanol masers in S269, an Ultra Compact HII region. The maser distribution in S269 consists of several maser groups, and the spatial structure of the main groups A and B are consistent with the past VLBI image. The remarkable result of comparing the two VLBI maps is that 6.7-GHz methanol maser distribution and velocity range within each group have been kept for eight years. Angular separation between the two groups A and B increases by 3.6 mas, which corresponds to a velocity of 11.5 km s−1.

Spectral classifications and color temperatures based on narrow-band TiO/CN photometry are given for ten dM stars that are known to be planet hosts.

To study the effect of magnetic fields on lithium depletion and explain the characters of lithium evolution in solar-type stars, stellar models including Tayler-Spruit dynamo-type field are constructed. We compare the theoretical results with the time scales of lithium depletion suggested by Sestito & Randich (2005) and obtain very good agreements.

The role of large-scale stellar feedback in the formation of molecular clouds has been investigated observationally by examining the relationship between Hi and 12CO(J = 1−0) in supershells. Detailed parsec-resolution case studies of two Milky Way supershells demonstrate an enhanced level of molecularisation over both objects, and hence provide the first quantitative observational evidence of increased molecular cloud production in volumes of space affected by supershell activity. Recent results on supergiant shells in the LMC suggest that while they do indeed help to organise the ISM into over-dense structures, their global contribution to molecular cloud formation is of the order of only ∼ 10%.

Large-amplitude asymptotic giant branch variables potentially rival Cepheid variables as fundamental calibrators of the distance scale, particularly if observations are made in the infrared, or where there is substantial interstellar obscuration. They are particularly useful for probing somewhat older populations, such as those found in dwarf spheroidal galaxies, elliptical galaxies or in the haloes of spirals. Calibration data from the Galaxy and new observations of various Local Group galaxies are described and the outlook for the future, with a calibration from Gaia and observations from the next generation of infrared telescopes, is discussed.

We present the radial velocity acceleration of the 6.7 GHz methanol maser in a high-mass star-forming region Monoceros R2 (Mon R2). The methanol maser is associated with an infrared source IRS3. The methanol maser of Mon R2 shows at least three spectral features having radial velocities (Vlsr) of 10.8, 12.7, and 13.2 km s−1. The radial velocity of a feature at Vlsr = 12.7 km s−1 has changed during ten years from Aug. 1999 to Oct. 2009, corresponding to an acceleration of 0.08 km s−1 yr−1. We observed the 6.7 GHz methanol masers of Mon R2 in Oct. 2008 using the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN). Compared with the previous VLBI image obtained in Nov. 1998 using the European VLBI Network (EVN), the maser feature at Vlsr = 12.7 km s−1 showed relative proper motions of ~2.5 mas yr−1 (about 10 km s−1 at 0.83 kpc) toward the intensity peak of IRS3. The radial velocity acceleration could be caused by an inflow from a disk or envelope around a high-mass young stellar object (YSO) at IRS3.

We develop a new method to estimate galaxy physical parameters, such as stellar masses, or star formation histories. This method is based on principal component analysis (PCA), using the information in rest-frame 3700-5500Å spectral region. The derived physical parameters are then applied to study the evolution of the most massive galaxies from z ~ 0.6 to the local Universe, especially on how radio AGN influence the recent star formation histories of host galaxies.

We present a summary of a three-year academic research proposal drafted during the Sao Paulo Advanced School of Astrobiology (SPASA) to prepare for upcoming observations of tidally locked planets orbiting M-dwarf stars. The primary experimental goal of the suggested research is to expose extremophiles from analogue environments to a modified space simulation chamber reproducing the environmental parameters of a tidally locked planet in the habitable zone of a late-type star. Here we focus on a description of the astronomical analysis used to define the parameters for this climate simulation.

The lithium abundance of KIC 11395018 and KIC 10920273 are not compatible with their age, which is deduced by asteroseismology. To explain this phenomenon, we investigate the possible evolutionary status and perform seismological analysis of the three stars KIC 11395018, KIC 10273246 and KIC 10920273. Using the Yale Rotating Stellar Evolution Code (YREC), we constructed a grid of evolutionary tracks with different input physics and rotation rates. In addition to the conventional observed properties, we added two observed constraints: lithium abundance and rotational period. As a result, the lithium abundance of our rotation models agrees well with the observation. Meanwhile, we obtained a set of more accurate stellar fundamental parameters than previous studies.

We use astrometry to measure the distances to Galactic Mira variable stars. Our purpose is to determine a precise period–luminosity relation (PLR). At present, we do not have a precise PLR for Galactic Mira stars because of the large uncertainties affecting their distance estimates. To reduce the uncertainties, we adopted the Very Long Baseline Interferometry method and measured annual parallaxes of Mira variable stars with VERA. In addition to our previous results, we obtained three new distances for Mira variable stars. Based on our observations, the typical uncertainty in a given distance measurement is reduced to below 10%. At this conference, we present the current status of our project. To establish a precise Galactic PLR, we continue to observe more Mira variables. In addition, the apparent magnitudes of the target stars should be studied carefully.

We present new high-resolution observations and modeling of SSTtau J042021+ 281349, a 400 AU-radius edge-on protoplanetary disk. We have gathered visible and near-infrared scattered light images of the system with the Hubble Space Telescope and Keck adaptive optics system, as well as a 1.3 mm continuum map with CARMA. Compared to the well-known HH 30 disk, this new system is remarkable because of its spectacular bipolar jet and the high degree of lateral symmetry of the disk. Indeed, we argue that this system is a “cleaner” prototype for edge-on disks. In addition, the apparent achromaticity of dust properties (most notably the almost grey opacity law) from the visible to the near-infrared in this disk suggests that it is in an advanced stage of dust evolution.

LOFT, the large observatory for X-ray timing, is a new mission concept competing with other four candidates for a launch opportunity in 2022-2024. LOFT will be performing high-time resolution X-ray observations of compact objects, combining for the first time an unprecedented large collecting area for X-ray photons and a spectral resolution approaching that of CCD-based X-ray instruments (down to 200 eV FWHM at 6 keV). The operating energy range is 2-80 keV. The main science goals of LOFT are the measurement of the neutron stars equation of states and the test of General Relativity in the strong field regime. The breakthrough capabilities of the instruments on-board LOFT will permit to open also new discovery windows for a wide range of Galactic and extragalactic X-ray sources.

In this contribution, we provide a general description of the mission concept and summarize its main scientific capabilities.

The Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) collaboration aims to detect gravitational waves (GWs) through the precise timing of millisecond pulsars. GWs will come in the form of a stochastic background, continuous sources and burst sources. Here we will review recent progress on the development of data analysis pipelines aimed at the detection of a stochastic background as well as continuous sources. We will introduce the Optimal Statistic and F-Statistic methods that are used in the stochastic and continuous pipelines, respectively. Both pipelines are fully functional on real pulsar timing data and take into account the timing models for each pulsar. Finally, we will present the efficacy of each pipeline on locally simulated data as well as data from the 2012 IPTA data challenge.

Dome Fuji on the Antarctic high plateau may be a good site for terahertz astronomy because of its high altitude of 3,810 m and low average temperature of −54°C. We have demonstrated that the opacity at 220 GHz from Dome Fuji in summer is very good and stable; τ = 0.045 ± 0.007. We have developed a transportable 30 cm telescope to map the Milky Way in the CO (J=4–3) and the [CI] (3P1–3P0) lines at Dome Fuji from 2014. It has a 9′ beam. Physical conditions such as density and temperature of molecular clouds could be derived from a direct comparison of CO (J=4–3) and [CI] (3P1–3P0) with CO (J=1–0) taken by the Columbia–CfA survey. We are also developing a 1.2 m sub-millimeter telescope. It will be equipped with a dual superconducting device (SIS) receiver for 500/800 GHz. The 1.2 m telescope produces a 2.2′ beam at 492 GHz and could map a molecular cloud entirely. It could also observe nearby galaxies in the CO (J=4–3), CO (J=7–6), [CI] (3P1–3P0), [CI] (3P2–3P1) and in continuum emission between 460–810 GHz.

We summarize some of the results obtained from Herschel surveys of nearby star forming regions and the Galactic plane. We show that in the nearby star forming regions the starless core spatial surface density distribution is very similar to that of the young stellar objects. This, taken together with the similarity between the core mass function and the initial mass function for stars and the relationship between the amount of dense gas and star formation rate, suggest that the cloud fragmentation process defines the global outcome of star formation. This “simple” view of star formation may not hold on all scales. In particular dynamical interactions are expected to become important at the conditions required to form young massive clusters. We describe the successes of a simple criterion to identify young massive cluster precursors in our Galaxy based on (sub-)millimeter wide area surveys. We further show that in the location of our Galaxy where the best candidate for a precursor of a young massive cluster is found, the “simple” scaling relationship between dense gas and star formation rate appear to break down. We suggest that in regions where the conditions approach those of the central molecular zone of our Galaxy it may be necessary to revise the scaling laws for star formation.

Blowout jets constitute about 50% of the total number of X-ray jets observed in polar coronal holes. In these events, the base magnetic loop is supposed to blow open in what is a scaled-down representation of two-ribbon flares that accompany major coronal mass ejections (CMEs): indeed, miniature CMEs resulting from blowout jets have been observed. This raises the question of the possible contribution of this class of events to the solar wind mass and energy flux. Here we make a first crude evaluation of the mass contributed to the wind and of the energy budget of the jets and related miniature CMEs, under the assumption that small-scale events behave as their large-scale analogs. This hypothesis allows us to adopt the same relationship between jets and miniature-CME parameters that have been shown to hold in the larger-scale events, thus inferring the values of the mass and kinetic energy of the miniature CMEs, currently not available from observations. We conclude our work estimating the mass flux and the energy budget of a blowout jet, and giving a crude evaluation of the role possibly played by these events in supplying the mass and energy that feeds the solar wind.

We report the analysis of a 19-year span of timing data on PSR J1713+0747 taken by the Arecibo and Green Bank telescopes. PSR J1713+0747 is one of the best high-timing-precision pulsars monitored by the NANOGrav project for the purpose of detecting gravitational waves. The timing precision of this pulsar can be regarded as the benchmark of NANOGrav timing instruments. We show the precision improvement achieved by multi-generation instruments including the Green Bank Ultimate Pulsar Processing Instrument (GUPPI) and its counterpart in Arecibo. The new timing solution we found improves the measurement of the pulsars mass, its orbital and geometric parameters, sets new limits on alternative gravitational theories, and may provide a high-quality single pulsar gravitational wave upper limit.
