We report on cross-matching the ROSAT All-Sky Survey and the XMM-Newton catalogs with the Kepler Input Catalog (KIC). For several stars associated with X-ray sources, we provide also an access to our high-resolution spectroscopic observations.

We present water maser observations toward IRAS 23033+5951 carried out with the VLA-EVLA in the A configuration. In order to study the spatio-kinematical distribution of the water masers detected in the region, we made a simple geometrical and kinematical model based on the conical equation. We find that the water masers are tracing a rotating and contracting circumstellar disk of about 110 AU around a very young source of 18 M⊙, which has not enough ionizing photons to be detected at centimeter wavelengths.

Dissimilarities in the spatial distribution of small (μm–size) and large (mm–size) dust grains at the cavity edge of transition disks have been recently pointed out and are now under debate. We obtained VLT/NACO near-IR polarimetric observations of SAO 206462 (HD 135344B). The disk around the star shows very complex structures, such as dips and spirals. We also find an inner cavity much smaller than what is inferred from sub-mm images. The interaction between disk and orbiting companion(s) may explain this discrepancy.

The Dark Energy Survey (DES) will be the new state-of the-art in large-scale galaxy imaging surveys. With 5,000 deg2, it will cover an area of the sky similar to SDSS-II, but will go over two magnitudes deeper, reaching 24th magnitude in all four optical bands (griz). DES will further provide observations in the redder Y-band and will be complemented with VISTA observations in the near-infrared bands JHK. Hence DES will furnish an unprecedented combination of sky and wavelength coverage and depth, unreached by any of the existing galaxy surveys. The very nature of the DES data set – large volume at intermediate photometric depth – allows us to probe galaxy formation and evolution within a cosmic-time range of ~ 10 Gyr and in different environments. In fact there will be many galaxy clusters available for galaxy evolution studies, given that one of the main aims of DES is to use their abundance to constrain the equation of state of dark energy. The X-ray follow up of these clusters, coupled with the use of gravitational lensing, will provide very precise measures of their masses, enabling us to study in detail the influence of the environment on galaxy formation and evolution processes. DES will leverage the study of these processes by allowing us to perform a detailed investigation of the galaxy luminosity and stellar mass functions and of the relationship between dark and baryonic matter as described by the Halo Occupation Distribution.

While the summit of the Antarctic Plateau has long been expected to harbor the best ground-based sites for terahertz (THz) frequency astronomical investigations, it is only recently that direct observations of exceptional THz atmospheric transmission and stability have been obtained. These observations, in combination with recent technological advancements in astronomical instrumentation and autonomous field platforms, make the recognition and realization of terahertz observatories on the high plateau feasible and timely. Here, we will explore the context of terahertz astronomy in the era of Herschel, and the crucial role that observatories on the Antarctic Plateau can play. We explore the important scientific questions to which observations from this unique environment may be most productively applied. We examine the importance and complementarity of Antarctic THz astronomy in the light of contemporary facilities such as ALMA, CCAT, SOFIA and (U)LDB ballooning. Finally, building from the roots of THz facilities in Antarctica to present efforts, we broadly highlight future facilities that will exploit the unique advantages of the Polar Plateau and provide a meaningful, lasting astrophysical legacy.

Stellar magnetic activity manifests itself in a variety of ways including starspots–cool, dark regions on the stellar surface. Starspots can cause variations (‘jitter’) in spectral line-profiles which can mimic the radial velocity (RV) variations caused by an orbiting planet, or create RV noise that can drown out a planetary signature. Cool, low-mass M dwarf stars can be highly active, which can make detection of potentially habitable planets around these stars difficult. We investigate radial velocity variations caused by different activity (spot) patterns on M dwarf stars in order to determine the limits of detectability for small planets orbiting active M dwarfs. We report on our progress toward the aim of answering the following questions: What types of spot patterns are realistic for M dwarf stars? What effect will spots have on M dwarf RV measurements? Can jitter from M dwarf spots mimic planetary signals? What is the ideal observing wavelength to reduce M dwarf jitter?

Here, we present a theoretical model for the global evolution of isolated giant molecular clouds. Accounting for the amount of mass, momentum, and energy supplied by accretion and star formation feedback, we are able to follow the growth, evolution, and dispersal of individual GMCs. We compare our models to observations of GMCs and associated young star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud and find good agreement between our model clouds and the observed relationship between Hii regions, young star clusters, and GMCs.

The luminosity of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) provides an excellent measure of galaxy distances and is easily determined in the resolved images of nearby galaxies observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). We use a maximum-likelihood algorithm to locate the TRGB in galaxy colour–magnitude diagrams. The algorithm is optimized by introducing reliable photometric errors and a completeness characterization determined based on artificial-star experiments. The program has been tested extensively using Monte Carlo simulations, artificial galaxies, and a sample of nearby dwarf galaxies observed with the HST's WFPC2 and ACS cameras. Our procedure is shown to be reliable, yield good accuracy, and does not introduce any systematic errors. The methodology is especially useful in cases in which the TRGB approaches the photometric limit and/or the RGB is poorly populated.

Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs), and more specifically Magnetic Clouds (MCs), are detected with in situ plasma and magnetic measurements. They are the continuation of the CMEs observed with imagers closer to the Sun. A review of their properties is presented with a focus on their magnetic configuration and its evolution. Many recent observations, both in situ and with imagers, point to a key role of flux ropes, a conclusion which is also supported by present coronal eruptive models. Then, is a flux rope generically present in an ICME? How to quantify its 3D physical properties when it is detected locally as a MC? Is it a simple flux rope? How does it evolve in the solar wind? This paper reviews our present answers and limited understanding to these questions.

The European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) is one the of three global Pulsar Timing Array communities, aiming to use the clock nature of pulsars to detect gravitational wave. In this talk, I will provide an introduction to the current status of EPTA pulsar observations and present an overview of the recent results. I will also give an update on the progress of the Large European Array for Pulsar (LEAP) project, which attempts to coherently combine the data from the five biggest single site radio telescopes in Europe and make an equivalently 200-metre diameter dish. The LEAP project is an ideal effort in performing high precision pulsar timing and studying characteristics of single pulses from millisecond pulsars.

We present parsec-scale interferometric maps of HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) emission from dense gas in the star-forming region 30Dor10, obtained using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. This extreme star-forming region, located in the Large Magellanic Cloud, is characterized by a very intense ionizing radiation field and sub-solar metallicity, both of which are expected to affect molecular cloud structure. We detect 13 clumps of dense molecular gas, some of which are aligned in a filamentary structure. Our analysis of the clump properties shows that they have similar mass but slightly wider linewidths than clumps detected in other LMC star-forming regions.

Class II methanol masers are thought to trace the brief phase in the evolution of a massive YSO, where outflows are expected to occur. Molecular line maps of the CO isotopes of a subset of 6.7 GHz sources from the MMB catalogue were observed with the JCMT telescope. Utilising optically thick 12CO, a search was done to detect broadened line wings (initially only on the source G20.08-0.13). The physical parameters of these detected lobes were then calculated.

The unique atmospheric conditions which pertain in the high Antarctic plateau offer dramatic gains for many areas of Astrophysics. Optical Interferometry is among the most technologically demanding branches of modern instrumentation, and furthermore, is one which is most strongly limited by the stability of the atmosphere at the observatory site. The long-term potential for spectacular gains by implementing an interferometer on the high Antarctic plateau are presented.

In order to investigate how magnetic activity influences a stellar evolution, we undertake a detailed study of photospheric abundances in a sample of RS CVn stars. Using the Nordic Optical Telescope we investigate abundances of more than 20 chemical elements, including carbon isotopes, nitrogen and other mixing-sensitive species. In this presentation we report on current results of the analysis, among which there are first evidences that extra-mixing processes may start acting in low-mass chromospherically active stars below a bump of the luminosity function of red giants.

Increasingly good statistical data on the galaxy population at high and low redshift enable the development of new phenomenological approaches to galaxy evolution based on application of the simplest continuity equations. This has given new insights into the different ways in which star-formation in galaxies is quenched, the role of merging in the population, and in to the control of star-formation in star-forming galaxies and the links with chemical evolution. The continuity approach provides a self-consistent view of the evolving population and exposes linkages between different aspects of galaxy evolution.

Among the numerous known extrasolar planets, only a handful have been imaged directly so far, at large orbital radii and in rather evolved systems. The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) will have the capacity to observe these wide planetary systems at a younger age, thus bringing a better understanding of the planet formation process. Here we explore the ability of ALMA to detect the gaps carved by planets on wide orbits.

The transit of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the Sun to 1 AU lasts on average one to five days. As they propagate, CMEs interact with the solar wind and preceding eruptions, which modify their properties. In the past ten years, the evolution of CMEs in the inner heliosphere has been investigated with the help of numerical simulations, through the analysis of remote-sensing heliospheric observations, especially with the SECCHI suite onboard STEREO, and through the analysis of multi-spacecraft in situ measurements. Most studies have focused on understanding the characteristics of the magnetic flux rope thought to form the core of the CME. Here, we first review recent work related to CME propagation in the heliosphere, which point towards the need to develop more complex models to analyze CME observations. In the second part of this article, we review some recent studies of CME-CME interaction, which also illustrate the complexity of phenomena occurring in the inner heliosphere.

We have a plan to conduct a Doppler planet search for low-mass planets around nearby middle-to-late M dwarfs using IRD. IRD is the near-infrared high-precision radial velocity instrument for the Subaru 8.2-m telescope. We expect to achieve the accuracy of the radial velocity measurements of 1 m/s using IRD with a frequency comb as a wavelengh calibrator. Thus, we would detect super-Earths in habitable zone and low-mass rocky planets in close-in orbits around late-M dwarfs. In this survey, we aim to understand and discuss statistical properties of low-mass planets around low-mass M dwarfs compared with those derived from theoretical simulations.

With SDSS multi-bands photometric data we propose that the variation of the nuclear continuum emission mostly accounts for the observed wavelength-dependent variability of active galactic nuclei.

A preliminary distance etimate to SMC 108.1.14904, a long-period eclipsing binary in the Small Magellanic Cloud, is presented. The binary system contains two bright, non-active G-type giants. Its orbital period is 185 days and the orbit is circular. Using surface brightness calibration, we obtain a distance modulus to the system of (m-M)= 19.02 ± 0.04 (statistical) ± 0.05 (systematic) mag, where the systematic error is dominated by uncertainties in the surface brightness calibration. This is a second eclipsing binary in the SMC analysed by our team.
