We present a study of the observational properties of Millisecond Pulsars (MSPs) by way of their magnetic fields, spin periods and masses. These measurements are derived through the scenario of Accretion Induced Collapse (AIC) of white dwarfs (WDs) in stellar binary systems, in order to provide a greater understanding of the characteristics of MSP populations. In addition, we demonstrate a strong evolutionary connection between neutron stars and WDs with binary companions from a stellar binary evolution perspective via the AIC process.

SCAR, the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, is, like the IAU, a committee of ICSU, the International Council for Science. For over 30 years, SCAR has provided scientific advice to the Antarctic Treaty System and made numerous recommendations on a variety of matters. In 2010, Astronomy and Astrophysics from Antarctica was recognized as one of SCAR's five Scientific Research Programs. Broadly stated, the objectives of Astronomy & Astrophysics from Antarctica are to coordinate astronomical activities in Antarctica in a way that ensures the best possible outcomes from international investment in Antarctic astronomy, and maximizes the opportunities for productive interaction with other disciplines. There are four Working Groups, dealing with site testing, Arctic astronomy, science goals, and major new facilities. Membership of the Working Groups is open to any professional working in astronomy or a related field.

EX Lupi-type young stars (EXors) show sporadic brightenings of several magnitudes, caused by the episodic increase in the accretion rate of the circumstellar matter onto the young star. As the inner disk plays a crucial role during the onset of the outburst, we examined the quiescent properties of the circumstellar environment of EXors, focusing on the inner regions. We found that in case of three EXors (VY Tau, V1143 Ori and EX Lup) the spectral energy distributions show no or weak excess above the stellar photosphere at NIR-MIR wavelengths, indicative of inner disk clearing. A detailed radiative transfer modeling of the sources revealed that the inner regions of these disks had to go through significant evolution, either the inner radius of the dusty disk is beyond the sublimation radius and/or the inner disks are flattened.

The geo-effectiveness of coronal mass ejections (CME) is determined by a complex chain of processes. This paper highlights this fact by first discussing the importance of CMEs intrinsic properties set at the Sun (e.g., trajectory, eruption process, orientation, etc.). We then review other key processes that may occur during propagation (e.g., shocks, compressions, magnetic flux erosion) and in the specific interaction with Earth's magnetosphere (e.g., magnetic properties, preconditioning mechanisms). These processes sequentially have a significant influence on the final geo-effectiveness of CMEs. Their relative importance is discussed. While the CME's trajectory, magnetic field orientation, velocity and their duration as set at the Sun certainly are key ingredients to geo-effectiveness, other processes and properties, that at first appear secondary, often may be as important.

The current understanding of the spin evolution of young pulsars is reviewed through a compilation of braking index measurements. An immediate conclusion is that the spin evolution of all pulsars with a measured braking index is not purely caused by a constant magnetic dipole. The case of PSR J1734-3333 and its upward movement towards the magnetars is used as a guide to try to understand why pulsars evolve with n < 3. Evolution between different pulsar families, driven by the emergence of a hidden internal magnetic field, appears as one possible picture.

We present the first results from the systematic observational campaign aimed at studying rapid photometric variability (i.e., flickering) in southern symbiotic stars. In particular, we report on the discovery of strong flickering from V648Car (also known as SS73-17), a poorly studied system belonging to the small class of hard X-ray emitting symbiotic stars. To our knowledge, with a U-band flickering amplitude >0.6mag over time scales of minutes, it is one of the most significant flickering ever reported from a symbiotic star.

Sites on Antarctic plateau have unique atmospheric properties that make them better than any mid-latitude sites as observatory locations. From site testing measurements over 4 years on Dome A carried out by the Chinese Center for Antarctic Astronomy, we can reasonably predict that Dome A is as good as or even better than Dome C, which has been proved to be the best astronomical site by now, and suitable for high angular resolution observations. Seeing monitoring is necessary for planning large scale ground-based optical astronomical telescopes. In 2012, the 28th Chinese Antarctic Scientific Expedition carried out preliminary daytime seeing monitoring using a Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM) placed at a height of 3.5m. The median seeing was found to be 0.8″. This will be the foundation of future research that obtains comprehensive and long-period monitoring of the site's optical parameters.

This contribution reviews recent observational results concerning astronomical masers toward post-AGB objects with a special attention to water fountain sources and the prototypical source OH 231.8+4.2. These sources represent a short transition phase in the evolution between circumstellar envelopes around asymptotic giant branch stars and planetary nebulae. The main masing species are considered and key results are summarized.

We review recent developments of amplification models of galactic and intergalactic magnetic field. The most popular scenarios involve variety of physical mechanisms, including turbulence generation on a wide range of physical scales, effects of supernovae, buoyancy as well as the magnetorotational instability. Other models rely on galaxy interaction, which generate galactic and intergalactic magnetic fields during galaxy mergers. We present also global galactic-scale numerical models of the Cosmic Ray (CR) driven dynamo, which was originally proposed by Parker (1992). We conduct a series of direct CR+MHD numerical simulations of the dynamics of the interstellar medium (ISM), composed of gas, magnetic fields and CR components. We take into account CRs accelerated in randomly distributed supernova (SN) remnants, and assume that SNe deposit small-scale, randomly oriented, dipolar magnetic fields into the ISM. The amplification timescale of the large-scale magnetic field resulting from the CR-driven dynamo is comparable to the galactic rotation period. The process efficiently converts small-scale magnetic fields of SN-remnants into galactic-scale magnetic fields. The resulting magnetic field structure resembles the X-shaped magnetic fields observed in edge-on galaxies.

The present star formation rate (SFR) in the inner Galaxy is puzzling for the chemical evolution models (CEM). No static CEM is able to reproduce the peak of the SFR in the 4 kpc ring. The main reason is probably a shortage of gas, which could be due to the dynamical effects produced by the galactic bar, not considered by these models. We developed a CEM that includes radial gas flows in order to mimic the effects of the galactic bar in the first 5 kpc of the galactic disk. In this model, the star formation (SF) is a two-step process: first, the diffuse gas forms molecular clouds. Then, stars form from cloud-cloud collisions or by the interaction between massive stars and the molecular gas. The former is called spontaneous and the latter induced SF. The mass in the different phases of each region changes by the processes associated with the stellar formation and death by: the SF due to spontaneous fragmentation of gas in the halo; formation of gas clouds in the disk from the diffuse gas; induced SF in the disk due to the interaction between massive stars and gas clouds; and finally, the restitution of the diffuse gas associated to these process of cloud and star formation. In the halo, the star formation rate for the diffuse gas follows a Schmidt law with a power n = 1.5. In the disk, the stars form in two steps: first, molecular clouds are formed from the diffuse gas also following a Schmidt law with n=1.5 and a proportionality factor. Including a specific pattern of radial gas flows, the CEM is able to reproduce with success the peak in the SFR at 4 kpc (fig. 1).

We study the influence of environment on emission line properties using the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, taking care to disentangle the role of mass and environment. We look at the role of local density separating galaxies into classifications star forming, AGN, and SF/AGN composite using the BPT diagnostic diagram. We find that environment is generally less important as a driving factor than galaxy mass. The presence of emission lines, whether driven by star formation or central supermassive black hole activity mostly depends on galaxy mass consistently for all galaxy types.

Evidence is now compelling that most externally-polluted white dwarfs derive their heavy atoms by accretion from asteroids – the building blocks of rocky planets. Optical and ultraviolet spectroscopy of a small sample of suitable white dwarf stars shows that to zeroth order, the accreted extrasolar parent bodies compositionally resemble bulk Earth. (1) Extrasolar planetesimals are at least 85% by mass composed of O, Mg, Si and Fe. (2) Compared to the Sun, C is often deficient, usually by at least a factor of 10 and therefore comprises less than 1% of an extrasolar planetesimal's mass. At least to-date, C has never been found to be enhanced as would be expected if carbon-rich planetesimals have formed. (3) While there may be individual exceptions, considered as a whole, the population of extrasolar asteroids accreted onto a well-defined sample of local white dwarf stars is less than 1% water by mass.

Spectroscopy and photometry of eclipsing binaries and Cepheids (using the Baade–Wesselink method) yield primary distance markers applicable to the Local Group of galaxies. The technique of disentangling spectra has proved helpful in resolving stellar physical parameters. Our method also allows us to disentangle interstellar absorption lines and, thus, to complement the radial-velocity structure of the interstellar medium with an (otherwise unattainable) upper limit to its distance. The mapping of the spatial and kinematic structure of the stellar and interstellar components of the Magellanic Clouds and Stream enables constraining their tidal evolution and, thus, of the mass of the Galaxy.

A recent study by Cid et al. (2012) showed that full halo coronal mass ejections (CMEs) coming from the limb can disturb the terrestrial environment. Although this result seems to rise some controversies with the well established theories, the fact is that the study encourages the scientific community to perform careful multidisciplinary analysis along the Sun-to-Earth chain to fully understand which are the solar triggers of terrestrial disturbances. This paper aims to clarify some of the polemical issues arisen by that paper.

The first galaxies form due to gravitational collapse of primordial halos. During this collapse, weak magnetic seed fields get amplified exponentially by the small-scale dynamo - a process converting kinetic energy from turbulence into magnetic energy. We use the Kazantsev theory, which describes the small-scale dynamo analytically, to study magnetic field amplification for different turbulent velocity correlation functions. For incompressible turbulence (Kolmogorov turbulence), we find that the growth rate is proportional to the square root of the hydrodynamic Reynolds number, Re1/2. In the case of highly compressible turbulence (Burgers turbulence) the growth rate increases proportional to Re1/3. With a detailed chemical network we are able to follow the chemical evolution and determine the kinetic and magnetic viscosities (due to Ohmic and ambipolar diffusion) during the collapse of the halo. This way, we can calculate the growth rate of the small-scale dynamo quantitatively and predict the evolution of the small-scale magnetic field. As the magnetic energy is transported to larger scales on the local eddy-timescale, we obtain an estimate for the magnetic field on the Jeans scale. Even there, we find that equipartition with the kinetic energy is reached on small timescales. Dynamically relevant field structures can thus be expected already during the formation of the first objects in the Universe.

Among the several methods of classifying gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the duration parameter has lead to the canonical classification of GRBs of long and shorts. However, the canonical classification of bursts has recently seen the emergence of a third type of GRB, which is present in a recent large burst sample from the Swift observatory. The high redshifts and the cosmological distances are directly confirmed for long bursts only, while for the short ones there is only indirect evidence for their cosmological origin. Cosmological objects should not only be redshifted in energy but also extended in time because of the expansion of the Universe. Meanwhile, an anticorrelation between the hardness and the duration is found for this subclass in contrast to the short and the long groups (Horvath et al. (2010)). Despite the differences among these three groups, it is not yet clear whether the third group represents a physically different phenomenon. In this scenario, we want to study the bimodal distribution of long bursts, focusing their temporal properties in the source location (burst frame). We have determined a temporal estimator in the cosmological rest-frame from a sample of 60 Swift's GRBs. If GRBs are at cosmological distances, then the burst profiles should be stretched in time due to cosmological time dilation by an amount proportional to the redshift, 1 + z (Chang (2001)). Complementary, we use the hardness ratio between the soft emission (15–50keV) and hard X-ray emission (50–150keV) in order to analyze the bimodal distribution of long bursts in the time-energy plane.

The central engine of AGN is too compact to be observed directly so its structure has to be inferred through the combination of spectral and variability information. Here we study the connection between optical-emitting accretion disc and X-ray emitting corona of the Seyfert NGC3783. Short light curves are consistent with optical fluctuations arising from X-ray reprocessing, but the long-term fluctuations found over the course of several years prove that at least long-term optical variability is not produced by the X-rays: at time-scales longer than 1 year the variability power in the optical is higher than in the X-rays. This indicates variability originating in the thin accretion disc itself, therefore capable of revealing its characteristics.

With the advent of precision cosmology, where distances out to redshifts z < 0.6 can be measured to 2% precision on the basis of baryon acoustic oscillations, it appears essential to establish an accurate calibration of the primary and secondary indicators of the cosmological distance ladder. Here we review recent attempts at anchoring M31 very accurately using three independent methods, and discuss in detail the systematics that affect each. Two double-lined eclipsing binaries yield a distance to M31 which is precise to 4%. New Bayesian methods have been applied to determine the tip of the red-giant branch, even in sparsely populated colour–magnitude diagrams, and provide unique insights in the context of a precise three-dimensional distribution of the satellites in the M31 system. Over 2500 Cepheids have been identified in large-scale multi-colour surveys of M31, the largest homogeneous data set thus far obtained for any galaxy. A subset of 68 with periods longer than 10 days have been observed with the Wide-Field Camera 3 on board the Hubble Space Telescope, yielding the tightest-ever near-infrared period–luminosity relation, with a mean distance error of 1%. Combined with other measurements, the distance to M31 is now measured with a precision of 3%. Forthcoming improvements, and their implications, are also discussed.

Building a complete coherent model of planet formation has proven difficult. There are gaps in the observational record, difficult physical processes that we have yet to fully understand, such as planetesimal formation, and an extensive list of observationally determined constraints that the model must fulfil. For example, the diversity of extrasolar planets detected to date is staggering – from single hot-Jupiters to multiple planet systems with several tightly packed super-Earths. In addition, the characteristics of the host stars are broad from single solar-mass stars to tight binaries and low mass, low metalicity stars. Even more surprising, perhaps, is the frequency of detection and thus, the implied efficiency of the planet formation process. Any theoretical model must not just be able to explain how planets form but must also explain the frequency and diversity of planetary systems. So why is planet formation so prolific? What parameters determine the type of planetary system that will result? How important are the initial parameters of the protoplanetary disk, such as composition, versus stochastic effects, such as gravitational scattering events, that occur during the evolution of the planetary system?

Current observations of extrasolar planets provide snapshots in time of the earliest and latest stages of planet formation but do not show the evolution between the two. It is at this point that we must rely on numerical models to evolve proto-planetary disks into planets. But how can we validate the results of our numerical simulations if the middle stages of planet formation are effectively invisible? Collisions are a core component of planet formation. Planetesimals, the building blocks of planets, collide with one another as they grow and evolve into planets or planetary cores and are viscously stirred by larger protoplanets and fully-formed planets. The range of impact parameters encountered during growth from planetesimals to planets span multiple collision outcome regimes: cratering, merging, disruption, and hit-and-run events. Most of these collisions produce significant debris and dust. If we have a good understanding of the production of collisional debris we can use it as an indirect tracer of on-going planetary evolution even if the planets themselves are not directly detectable.

In this paper I will show how numerical simulations of planet formation including realistic collision modelling can be used to predict, and be constrained by, observations.

Shortly after the discovery of PSR J1906+0746, some hints of profile variations were already interpreted as first signs of relativistic spin-precession occuring. Using observations from the Nançay, Arecibo and Green Bank Radio Observatories, we report here the measurement of pulse profile and polarimetric variations. Using the Rotating Vector Model, we show that PSR J1906+0746 is likely to be an orthogonal rotator (α ≃ 80°). Fitting our polarimetric data to a precession model, we determined the geometry of the pulsar and found a wide misalignment angle (δ = 89−44+85 deg, 95% C.L.), although the uncertainty is large. Assuming this geometry, we constructed the beam maps of both magnetic poles.
