We investigate the fortune of young neutron stars (NS) in the whole volume of the Milky Way with new code for population synthesis. We start our modeling from the birth of massive OB stars and follow their motion in the Galaxy up to the Supernova explosion. Next we integrate the equations of motion of NS in the averaged gravitational potential of the Galaxy. We estimate the mean kick velocities from a comparison the model Z and R-distributions of radio emitting NS with that for galactic NS accordingly ATNF pulsar catalog. We follow the history of the rotational velocity and the surface magnetic field of NS taking into account the significant magnetic field decay during the first million year of a neutron star's life. The derived value for the mean time of ohmic decay is 2.3ċ105 years. We model the subsample of galactic radio pulsars which can be detected with available radio telescopes, using a radio beaming model with inhomogeneous distribution of the radio emission in the cone. The distributions functions of the pulsar periods P, period derivatives Ṗ and surface magnetic fields B appear to be in a close agreement with those obtained from an ensemble of neutron stars in the ATNF catalogue.

Many interacting binaries start their mass exchange when a donor overfilling its Roche lobe has evolved to a giant branch. The response of the donor's radius to the mass loss as compared to the response of its Roche lobe determines the fate of the binary system – whether it will proceed with a stable mass transfer, or experience dramatic common envelope event. Recent studies of responses of realistic giant's stellar models to a fast mass loss showed that this response is not purely adiabatic as previously thought but depends on the behavior of giant's superadiabatic surface layer. In this contribution, we explore in further details how an interplay between superadiabatic layer's thermal timescale and the dynamic timescale of the donor affects the donor's mass loss. We also find that the initiation of the mass loss causes mass loss induced pulsations.

Interactions and mergers are important drivers of galaxy evolution, transform spiral galaxies into massive ellipticals, and fuel both powerful starbursts and massive nuclear black holes. In particular one galaxy population, namely Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs), are believed to be responsible for most of the star formation that happened in the history of the universe (see e.g. Le Floch et al. 2005, Caputi et al. 2007, Magnelli et al. 2009), and hence represent a critical phase in the evolution of galaxies where most of the galaxies mass is building up. During a merger process, violent relaxation acts on stars present in gas-rich progenitor disks, while the centers are structured by the relics of dissipational, compact starbursts, imprinting a central “extra light” component or “cusp” into the surface brightness profiles of merger remnants. Our HST NICMOS/WFC3 imaging program of the 88 most luminous LIRGs in the Great Observatories Allsky LIRG Survey (GOALS, see Armus et al. 2009) shows that the central luminosity surface density in nearby LIRGs increases significantly along the merger sequence, indicating that the gas inflow fuels a central starburst and subsequently builds a compact stellar cusp (Haan et al. 2011). A large fraction of all galaxies in our sample possess double or multiple nuclei (~63%). Half of these double nuclei are not visible in the HST B-band images due to dust obscuration, which implies strong limitations on the ability to detect the true nuclear structures of luminous infrared galaxies at high-redshift (z >2) and may explain some of the apparent discrepancy of the LIRG population and merger ratio between local and high-redshift galaxies. We find that ULIRGs (log[LIR/L⊙] > 12.0) have significantly smaller nuclear separations than LIRGs (log[LIR/L⊙] = 11.4 — 12.0) with a median value of 1.2 kpc and 6.7 kpc, respectively. In our sample, merger (regardless of whether LIRG or ULIRG) seem to be prevalent at two time scales (based on the projected nuclear separation and mass ratio of the nuclei): First, at a remaining merger time scale of 0.3<[t-tmerg]<1.3 Gyr (53% of mergers in our sample), and second, at [t-tmerg]~ 0 (26%), likely representing the first passage of interacting galaxies and the final nuclear coalescence, respectively, with a post-merger time (starburst phase after the nuclei merged) of roughly 300 Myrs.

In the last decade large surveys have allowed us to separate the atomic and molecular phases of the interstellar media in a wide variety of galaxies, and to determine how each of these phases correlates with star formation. The most striking results of these observations have been that the transition from H i to H2 occurs at a characteristic gas column density that depends on metallicity, and that star formation correlates primarily with the molecular phase. These observations have stimulated a burst of theoretical work, which I review here. The work can be broken into three primary questions: what physical mechanisms control the H i to H2 transition? Why does star formation correlate with H2 and not with some other phase of the ISM? Finally, what are the implications of the answers to the previous two questions for our understanding of star formation on the cosmological scale? I discuss our current best answers to each of these questions, and conclude with prospects for future work.

The solar wind (SW) is a suitable natural scenario to study the intermittent nature of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence for systems with low dissipation rate. In particular, nonlinear wave-wave interactions can be characterized by the degree of phase correlation and by departures from Gaussianity of the magnetic field. In this work, we study in situ observations of magnetic field intensity from the spacecraft ACE, which is located near one astronomical unit from the Sun, in the SW near Earth. We compute the phase coherence index analyzing two sets of observations, each one consisting of approximately three months during 2008 and 2012, respectively. From these sets of data we characterize intermittent features of the magnetic field intensity corresponding to a solar maximum and a solar minimum.

The MeerKAT radio telescope array is the South African precursor instrument for the proposed Square Kilometer Array's mid-band frequency range. It will be the most sensitive centimetre-wavelength telescope in the southern hemisphere until the SKA is built. It will cover a broad range of astronomical science from the evolution of galaxies to tests of Einstein's theory of General Relativity, using Pulsars. The chosen frequency bands will enable sensitive southern Galactic maser surveys in the main lines of hydroxyl, 12 GHz methanol and perhaps 14.5 GHz formaldehyde lines as well as searches for redshifted water masers from red-shifts greater than about 0.5. Proposals for Large Surveys using MeerKAT were solicited in late 2009 and resulted in some 20 proposals from teams comprising 500 scientists, world-wide. The successful proposals relevant to maser research will be discussed below.

We report a pair of oppositely directed sudden impulses (SI), in the geomagnetic field (ΔX), at ground stations, called SI+ – SI− pairs, that occurred between 1835 UT and 2300 UT on 23 April 1998. The SI+ – SI− pair, was well correlated with corresponding variations in the solar wind density, while solar wind velocity and the southward component of the interplanetary magnetic field (Bz) did not show any correspondence. This event had no source on the visible solar disk but was associated with a rear-side fast partial halo coronal mass ejection (CME) and an optically occulted M1.4 class solar flare behind the west limb. This event was unique in that one could clearly identify variations in ΔX at ground stations with solar wind parameters.

Dynamical studies of new exoplanet systems are a critical component of the discovery and characterisation process. Such studies can provide firmer constraints on the parameters of the newly discovered planets, and may even reveal that the proposed planets do not stand up to dynamical scrutiny. Here, we demonstrate how dynamical studies can assist the characterisation of such systems through two examples: QS Virginis and HD 73526.

The relationship between the speed of coronal mass ejections and the peak soft X-ray flux of the associated flares is studied for events occurring near the solar limbs between 1996 and 2008. An improved, though still moderate, correlation between the two parameters is found.

We have carried out simultaneous 22 GHz H2O and 44 GHz Class I CH3OH maser line surveys of more than 1500 intermediate- and high-mass YSOs in the Galaxy using newly-constructed KVN 21-m telescopes. As the central (proto)stars evolve, the detection rates of the two masers rapidly decrease for intermediate-mass YSOs while the rates increase for high-mass YSOs. These results suggest that the occurrence of the two masers is closely related both to the evolutionary stage of the central objects and to the circumstellar environments. CH3OH masers always have very similar velocities (<10 km s−1) to the natal dense cores, whereas H2O masers often have significantly different velocities. The isotropic luminosities of both masers are well correlated with the bolometric luminosities of the central (proto)stars.

We present the results of the distribution of CO-dark H2 gas in a sample of 2223 interstellar clouds in the inner Galaxy (l=−90° to +57°) detected in the velocity resolved [CII] spectra observed in the GOT C+ survey using the Herschel HIFI. We analyze the [CII] intensities along with the ancillary HI, 12CO and 13CO data for each cloud to determine their evolutionary state and to derive the H2 column densities in the C+ and C+/CO transition layers in the cloud. We discuss the overall Galactic distribution of the [CII] clouds and their properties as a function Galactic radius. GOT C+ results on the global distribution of [CII] clouds and CO-dark H2 gas traces the FUV intensity and star formation rate in the Galactic disk.

We present Doppler tomographic observations of the transiting planet Kepler-13b (aka KOI-13b), a highly inflated hot Jupiter orbiting the Teff=8500 K primary of a hierarchical triple stellar system. As the planet transits the rapidly rotating host star, it successively blocks regions of the stellar disk with different radial velocities, causing a “bump” in the stellar spectral line shape, which we resolve spectroscopically. The manner in which this perturbation moves across the stellar line during the transit gives information on the relative alignment between the stellar spin and planetary orbital angular momentum vectors. This is a powerful statistical probe of planetary migration processes, as the expected spin-orbit misalignment distributions from dynamically cold migration (disk interactions) and dynamically hot migration (planet-planet scattering, Kozai cycles) are significantly different: the former will lead to primarily aligned orbits; the latter to a wide distribution. Doppler tomography also promises to be a powerful technique for confirming transiting planet candidates around rapidly rotating stars like Kepler-13A, which are not amenable to radial velocity follow-up and thus are currently a poorly sampled region of parameter space.

The connection between active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their hosts showed to be important for understanding the formation and evolution of active galaxies. Using X–ray and deep optical data, we study how morphology and colours are related to X–ray properties at redshifts z≤2.0 for a sample of > 300 X–ray detected AGN in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS; Furusawa et al. 2008) and Groth-Westphal Strip (GWS; Pović et al. 2009) fields. We performed our morphological classification using the galSVM code (Huertas-Company et al. 2008), which is a new method that is particularly suited when dealing with high-redshift sources. To separate objects between X–ray unobscured and obscured, we used X–ray hardness ratio HR(0.5-2 keV/2-4.5 keV). Colour-magnitude diagrams were studied in relationship to redshift, morphology, X–ray obscuration, and X–ray-to-optical flux ratio. Around 50% of X–ray detected AGN at z≤2.0 analysed in this work reside in spheroidal and bulge-dominated galaxies, while at least 18% have disk-dominated hosts. This suggests that different mechanisms may be responsible for triggering the nuclear activity. When analysing populations of X–ray detected AGN in both colour-magnitude (CMD) and colour-stellar mass diagrams (Figure 1), the highest number of sources is found to reside in the green valley at redshifts ≈ 0.5–1.5. For the first time we studied CMD of these AGN in relation to morphology and X–ray obscuration, finding that they can reside in both early- and late-type hosts, where both morphological types cover similar ranges of X–ray obscuration (Figure 1). Our findings appear to confirm some previous suggestions that X–ray selected AGN residing in the green valley represent a transitional population (e.g. Nandra et al. 2007, Silverman et al. 2008, Treister et al. 2009), quenching star formation by means of different AGN feedback mechanisms and evolving to red-sequence galaxies. More details on analysis and results presented here can be found in Pović et al. 2012.

We study the properties of the He I 10830 Å line under the bombardment of nonthermal electron beam. Using radiative hydrodynamics method, we obtain the line profiles from different model atmospheres by varying the electron beam fluxes. Below a certain electron flux, the spectra become much more absorptions as nonthemal flux increases. Above the threshold, the spectral intensities increase as the flux goes up. We also investigate the temporal evolution of the spectra under the nonthermal heating. For weak electron flux, the profiles evolve from weak absorptions to strong absorptions. For strong nonthermal heating, the profiles can be significantly changed from absorptions to emissions. The spectra also show red or blue asymmetries.

In Han & Han (2012), we have preliminarily built BayeSED and applied it to a sample of hyperluminous infrared galaxies. The physically reasonable results obtained from Bayesian model comparison and parameter estimation show that BayeSED could be a useful tool for understanding the nature of complex systems, such as dust obscured starburst-AGN composite galaxies, from decoding their complex SEDs. In this contribution, we present a more rigorous test of BayeSED by making a mock catalog from model SEDs with the value of all parameters to be known in advance.

Recent observations, suggesting that subpulse drifting, pulse nulling and profile mode-changes are related phenomena, are reviewed and it is argued that these are associated with global changes in the magnetosphere. Long simultaneous multi-frequency observations are useful to test this premise as is illustrated by the preliminary results from a recent study of PSR B0031–07, B0809+74 and B2319+60. Such observations for a larger sample of pulsars will be useful to constrain recent models, invoking global changes in the pulsar magnetosphere, proposed to explain observations demonstrating association of spin-down changes with profile mode-changes.

Methanol masers are known to be among the most reliable tracers of high-mass stars in early stages of evolution. A number of searches across the Galaxy has yielded to date, a complete census of those masers in two thirds of the Milky Way, providing a catalogue of some 800 sources to be studied in depth. In particular, it is important to characterise the physical properties of the objects hosting methanol masers, and this is possible today using data from the Herschel Space Observatory (HSO). The exceptional spatial resolution of HSO and its wavelength coverage are perfectly tuned to put the methanol maser phase into its star formation context. This paper presents results on the characterisation of methanol maser hosts using Herschel data from the Hi-GAL project, an Open Time Key Project to survey the inner Galactic plane at 5 wavelengths between 70 and 500 μm.

We investigate the violent events in the cluster of two active regions (ARs), NOAA numbers 11121 and 11123, observed on 11 November 2010 by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). Within one day the magnetic field intensity increased by 70% with the emergence of new groups of bipoles in AR 11123, where three filaments are seen along the complex inversion line. The destabilization of the filaments led to flares and CMEs. The CMEs around 08:24 UT and 17:00 UT are directly related to the partial eruption of one filament in the new AR, as shown by a topology computation and analysis. The other CMEs on this day are due to either other ARs or to the destabilization of the global magnetic configuration of the two ARs. This conclusion can be only reached by using the three eyes of SOHO, STEREO and SDO.

cD galaxies are supergiant elliptical galaxies found generally in the central parts of rich clusters, which have an extended halo-like component (envelope) in addition to the underlying de Vaucouleurs-Sérsic elliptical galaxy-like component. This envelope can extend to radial distances of > 500 kpc (Oemler 1976, Schombert 1988). There have been many theories to explain the formation of these envelopes. These include tidal stripping, where material is stripped from neighbouring galaxies; mergers and fusions, where the envelope is built up hierarchically by successive mergers with large and small galaxies; primordial origin, where the envelope is formed at the same time as the rest of the elliptical galaxy (which appears to be related to theories of early formation of the largest galaxies); and cooling flows: in clusters with X-ray emission there is often a minimum temperature in the centre interpreted as a flow of cooling gas towards the centre of the cluster, where the gas can cool sufficiently, forming stars. The colours of the stars in the envelopes will be affected by their process of formation and subsequent evolution.

The field of exoplanet spectroscopy has grown tremendously in the last decade. With the discovery of gas giant planets at wide separations from their host stars via direct imaging, it is now possible to obtain exoplanet spectra with unprecedented spectral resolution. We present a medium resolution spectrum of the directly imaged exoplanet HR 8799c. This K-band spectrum was obtained using the integral field spectrograph OSIRIS on the Keck II telescope. Our spectrum shows numerous, well-resolved molecular lines from water and carbon monoxide (CO). There is no clear evidence for methane absorption, in spite of a best fit temperature of ~1100 K. We find a best fit surface gravity log(g) ~ 4.0, consistent with the inferred young age for the system (~30 Myr), and a continuum morphology consistent with previously-inferred dust clouds. Using the water and CO lines, we are able to estimate the C/O ratio for this planet. We find a ratio slightly higher than stellar (~0.65), which provides hints about the planet's formation.
