We test a nonlinear force-free field (NLFFF) optimization code in spherical geometry with an analytical solution from Low and Lou. The potential field source surface (PFSS) model is served as the initial and boundary conditions where observed data are not available. The analytical solution can be well recovered if the boundary and initial conditions are properly handled. Next, we discuss the preprocessing procedure for the noisy bottom boundary data, and find that preprocessing is necessary for NLFFF extrapolations when we use the observed photospheric magnetic field as bottom boundaries. Finally, we apply the NLFFF model to a solar area where four active regions interacting with each other. An M8.7 flare occurred in one active region. NLFFF modeling in spherical geometry simultaneously constructs the small and large scale magnetic field configurations better than the PFSS model does.

Cosmic ray ionization has been found to be a dominant mechanism for the formation of ions in dense interstellar environments. Cosmic rays are further known to initiate the highly efficient ion-neutral chemistry within star forming regions. In this talk we explore the effect of both cosmic rays and UV photons on a model hot Jupiter atmosphere using a non-equlibrium chemical network that combines reactions from the UMIST Database for Astrochemistry, the KIDA database for interstellar and protoplanetary environments and three-body and combustion reactions from the NIST database and from various irradiated gas planet networks. The physical parameters for our model atmosphere are based on HD 189733 b (Effective Temperature of 1000 K, log g = 3.3, solar metallicity, at a distance 0.03 AU from a K dwarf). The active UV photochemistry high in our model hot Jupiter atmosphere tends to destroy these hydrocarbons, but on a time-scale sufficiently slow that PAH formation could already have taken place. In most cases, carbon-bearing species formed by cosmic rays are destroyed by UV photons (e.g. C2H2, C2H4, HC3N). Conversely, carbon-bearing species enhanced by an active photochemistry are depleted when cosmic ray ionization is significant (e.g. CN, HCN and CH4). Ammonia is an interesting exception to this trend, enhanced both by an active photochemistry and a high cosmic ray ionization rate.

We report observations of a long filament that underwent recurrent partial eruptions on August 4, 6, and 8, 2012. The filament reappeared in the subsequent rotation of the Sun, and disappeared completely on August 31, 2012. We implemented an automated filament detection algorithm developed by us for estimating different attributes of these filaments few hours prior to its disappearance in Hα and studied their evolution. Based on these attributes, we determine the onset time of the disappearance of Hα filaments. We then compared these onset times with that of the associated CMEs observed by LASCO/SOHO coronagraphs. This is also useful to understand temporal relationship of EUV and X-ray flux variation associated with filament disappearances in Hα. Our results show the importance of such studies in understanding the mechanism of CME initiation, particularly the role of eruptive filaments, in this process.

We observed two magnetars, 4U 0142+61 and 1E2259+568, with the Japanese infrared satellite AKARI to search for the time variability at wavelengths between 2-4 μm. We significantly detected 4U0142+61 in the 4μm band, and determined flux upper limits in the other two bands. We did not detect 1E 2259+586 in any of the bands, and determined upper limits. Comparing the detection of 4U 0142+61 in the 4μm band with the Spitzer observation from 2005, we found the flux was reduced to be 64%. We interpret this time variability in the infrared band as an increase of the inner radius of the dust disk around the neutron star, where the increase is due to the sublimation of the dust by the large flare of neutron star itself.

We study the redshift evolution of neutral and molecular gas in the interstellar medium with the results from semi-analytic models of galaxy formation and evolution, which track the cold gas related physical processes in radially resolved galaxy disks. Two kinds of prescriptions are adopted to describe the conversion between molecular and neutral gas in the ISM: one is related to the gas surface density and gas metallicity based on the model results by Krumholz, Mckee & Tumlinson; the other is related the pressure of ISM. We try four types of star formation laws in the models to study the effect of the molecular gas component and the star formation time scale on the model results, and find that the H2 dependent star formation rate with constant star formation efficiency is the preferred star formation law. We run the models based on both Millennium and Millennium II Simulation haloes, and the model parameters are adjusted to fit the observations at z = 0 from THINGS/HERACLES and ALFALFA/COLD GASS. We give predictions for the redshift evolution of cosmic star formation density, H2 to HI cosmic ratios, gas to star mass ratios and gas metallicity vs stellar mass relation. Based on the model results, we find that: (i) the difference in the H2 to HI ratio at z > 3 between the two H2 fraction prescriptions can help future observations to test which prescription is better; (ii) a constant redshift independent star formation time scale will postpone the star formation processes at high redshift and cause obvious redshift evolution for the relation between gas metallicity and stellar mass in galaxies at z < 3.

We present results of a VLBI experiment at a wavelength of 18 cm, which simulates the ground-space interferometer with space link to RadioAstron. An array of five antennas was used, four of them are located in the Russian Federation, plus the the 32-m radio telescope in Medicine (Italy). The 22-m radio telescope in Pushchino (Moscow Region) acted in place of the space arm. It has an effective area of 100 square meters. The three other Russian 32-m antennas are operated by the Institute of Applied Astronomy RAS; they are located at Badary, Svetloe and Zelenchukskaya (interferometer network “Quasar”). The maximum base-line, Badary-Svetloe, was about 4402 km, providing an angular resolution of about 0.009 arc seconds at a wavelength of 18 cm. The duration of the experiment was 10 hours on 02/03 February 2011. The program of observations included quasars 3C273, 3C279, 3C286 and the maser source - W3(OH). W3(OH) was observed only by the Russian telescopes and was investigated at the frequency of the 1665 MHz main line. The data were recorded on the MK5 recorder (32-m radio telescopes) and the RDR system (RadioAstron Digital Recorder) in Pushchino. The low SEFD (system equivalence of flux density) of Pushchino emulated the RadioAstron antenna. Correlation was performed with the universal software correlator of the AstroSpace Center of Lebedev Physical Institute. The correlator output format is compatible with that used by the AIPS package, which was used for data analysis. After analyzing the correlated data we obtained relative coordinates of the maser components. The main results are tabulated and presented in the figures. The data quality is sufficient for astrophysical analysis and comparison with previous observations of maser source W3(OH) on VLBI networks EVN and VLBA.

We present the stellar population and velocity dispersion gradients for a sample of 24 brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in the nearby Universe for which we have obtained high quality long-slit spectra at the Gemini telescopes. With the aim of studying the possible connection between the formation of the BCGs and their host clusters, we explore the relations between the stellar population gradients and properties of the host clusters, as well as the possible connections between the stellar population gradients and other properties of the galaxies. We find mean stellar population gradients (negative Δ[Z/H]/log r gradient of − 0.285 ± 0.064; small positive Δlog(age)/log r gradient of +0.069 ± 0.049; and null Δ[E/Fe]/log r gradient of -0.008 ± 0.032), that are consistent with those of normal massive elliptical galaxies. However, we find a trend between metallicity gradients and velocity dispersion (with a negative slope of − 1.616 ± 0.539), that is not found for the most massive ellipticals. Furthermore, we find trends between the metallicity gradients and K-band luminosities (with a slope of 0.173 ± 0.081) as well as the distance from the BCG to the X-ray peak of the host cluster (with a slope of − 7.546 ± 2.752). The latter indicates a possible relation between the formation of the cluster and that of the central galaxy.

Radial Velocity (RV) plots of emission lines, including Hα, from non-magnetic Cataclysmic Variables (CV), are usually fit with a sin curve. This sin fit sometimes does not prove to be the best fit for some non-magnetic CVs with accretion discs. An analytical model is created based on our 3D Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamic (SPH) numerical code in order to simulate the RV curves. The observational target is WW And, a long period non-magnetic CV. The model takes into account disc ellipticity and inclination angle that provide good non-sinusoidal fits to the observed RV data.

We tested the origin of the nebular radiation in the symbiotic star AG Dra, during different levels of its activity. We modeled the broad wings of the OVI 1032, 1038 Å resonance lines and HeII 1640 Å line by the Thomson scattering process, and determined the electron-scattering optical depth, τe, of the symbiotic nebula. The increase of τe during active phases results from an increase in the accretion rate onto the white dwarf.

We report secondary eclipse detections of the transiting hot Jupiter WASP-3b at 3.6, 4.5 and 8.0μm using the Spitzer Space Telescope's Infrared Array Camera. We find planet-to-star flux ratios of 0.210+0.043−0.029, 0.281+0.012−0.011 and 0.332+0.050−0.034% in the three bands respectively. Comparisons with 1D atmospheric models show these values strongly favour inefficient redistribution of heat around the planet and also favour the presence of a temperature inversion. In addition, WASP-3 probes the cut-off region of a proposed activity-inversion correlation and we find evidence of atmospheric differences between this system and a similarly active system, WASP-4.

We investigate the formation of molecular hydrogen on ISM dust grains at T < 10 K. We use laboratory methods to detect newly formed D2 that is rovibrationally excited at v” = 4, J” = 2. We discover that recombination is catalyzed by pre-existing molecules on the dust surface and present this an important process in the coldest regions of the ISM.

Solar jets are typical proxies of small-scale magnetic reconnection events in the solar atmosphere. In this paper, we observe a small-scale jet in a solar quiet region, using data from SDO/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI), with supplemental data from STEREO/EUVI. From HMI magnetograms and calculated photospheric flows, we find that the jet is related to the interaction between unipolar network fields and emerging internetwork bipoles at the boundary of a supergranular cell. In AIA extreme-ultraviolet images, the jet actually includes two successive plasma ejections along different directions. The first ejection follows a distorted path which guides plasma into a small filament channel nearby. However, the second one shot straight along another direction that is parallel with extrapolated potential magnetic field lines on the local. According to these observations, we advocate that during the jet eruption new emerging magnetic fields are reconnecting at the edge of the supergranular cell with different kinds of ambient fields from low (magnetic canopy) to high (high-reaching loops) to allow the occurrence of successive ejections along different directions.

Almost exactly twenty years ago, the first of a series of conferences dedicated to cosmic masers took place in Arlington, Virginia in the USA (March 9–11, 1992). Two more followed, each on a different continent, in Mangaratiba, near Rio de Janeiro, Brasil (March 5–10, 2001) and in Alice Springs, Australia (March 12–16, 2007). As at all others, a large part of the international maser community convened from January 29 to February 3, 2012 in splendid Stellenbosch, South Africa, to discuss the state of the art of the field.

Dynamics of magnetic field decay is numerically studied. For neutron stars with strong magnetic fields, the Hall drift timescale in their crust is very short, and therefore the evolution is significantly affected. The nonlinear coupling between poloidal and toroidal components of the magnetic field is studied. It is also found that the polar field at the surface is highly distorted during the Hall drift timescale. For example, polar dipole field-strength temporarily decreases not by dissipation but by advection. This fact suggests that the dipole field-strength is not sufficient to determine the border between pulsars and magnetars.

We study the different evolutional stages of a large quiescent prominence, mainly considering its dynamic/thermal instabilities occurred close from the boundary of coronal hole (CH). We identify the critical conditions, such as the minimum distance between the CH's boundary and prominence channel and the emergence of a new magnetic flux linked to the prominence instability and its general evolution in connection to CH. Our observations indicate peculiar filament activations prior to its thermal/dynamic instabilities, suggesting the connection of nearby CH with the general evolution of prominence and vice versa. Additionally, we analyze each evolutional stage of prominence and the associated Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs).

We show the results of a non-parametric, fully bayesian implementation of a spectral fitting algorithm, designed to calculate the main physical parameters that govern the galaxy assembly process. In this work, we present results from a statistical treatment of SED fitting that allows for easy recovery and visualization of the galaxy physical parameters.

Coronal mass ejections (CME) and associated interplanetary-propagated solar wind disturbances are the established causes of the geomagnetic storms which, in turn, create the most hazardous impacts on power grids. These impacts are due to the large geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) associated with variations of geomagnetic field during storms, which, flowing through the transformer windings, cause extra magnetisation. That can lead to transformer saturation and, in extreme cases, can result in power blackouts. Thus, it is of practical importance to study the solar causes of the large space weather events. This paper presents the example of the space weather chain for the event of 5-6 November 2001 and a table providing complete overview of the largest solar events during solar cycle 23 with their subsequent effects on interplanetary medium and on the ground. This compact overview can be used as guidance for investigations of the solar causes and their predictions, which has a practical importance in everyday life.

Interactions and mergers of gas-rich galaxies are important drivers of galaxy evolution, in particular in reshaping spirals and fueling powerful starbursts and supermassive nuclear black holes. Hubble Space Telescope observations of nuclei in merging galaxies have shown an increasing nuclear luminosity density in the optical/near-infrared light with advancing merger stage (Laine et al. 2003, Rossa et al. 2007, Veilleux et al. 2009, Haan et al. 2011a), suggesting an increase of nuclear starburst activity. To address the physical conditions in major mergers and excitation mechanisms such as shocks and starbursts, it is necessary to resolve the spatial variations of the warm dust, molecular gas, and ionized gas on subgalactic scales. Here we summarize the main results based on Spitzer IRS spectral mapping observations of a sample of eight nearby, IR-bright galaxies of the Toomre Sequence (Toomre & Toomre 1972) that span the range from early through mid- to late-stage major mergers (Haan et al. 2011b).

We find that the cold molecular gas component as observed in the CO emission line does not correlate with the warm gas in early merger systems, leading to large spatial variations in the ratio of cold-to-warm molecular gas. In particular, the cold molecular gas distribution in NGC 4676 and NGC 6621 show a significant offset not only from the warm gas component, but also from the stellar (NIR) and dust distribution (PAH, mid-IR continuum). On locally resolved scales within a merger, we find an intrinsic relation between H2 and PAH flux as given by a power law with a very similar exponent (0.61 ± 0.05) for all galaxies but with a constant that can vary up to a factor of ten between different galaxies. These findings suggest a common dominant excitation mechanism for H2 emission over a large range of global H2/PAH flux ratios in major mergers. The spatial extent of the warm gas component (H2) is larger than for the PAH emission (in all galaxies but more extrem in mid-stage merger), which leads to an increase of the H2/PAH ratio as function of radius. Two merger systems (NGC 7592 and NGC 6621) show evidence for buried star formation in overlap regions between the nuclei, namely strong PAH, [Ne II], [Ne III] and warm gas (H2) emission, but no apparent corresponding CO (J = 1−0) emission. Our findings also demonstrate that the variations of the physical conditions within a merger are much larger than any systematic trends along the Toomre Sequence.

We present a multiwavelength photometric analysis of the innermost (3×3 kpc2) Globular Clusters (GCs) of M87. Their Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) were built with J and Ks imaging obtained with NaCo at the VLT, along with HST UV-optical archival data. Using both Galatic GC templates and stellar population models, we derived ages (> 10 Gyr) and metallicities ([Fe/H]~ −0.7) for these clusters (e.g: Cohen et al. 1998). These GCs have lower metallicities than its host galaxy. This agrees with the idea that the GC population formed earlier than the bulk of the stars.

Gravitational microlensing by the stellar population of lensing galaxies provides an important opportunity to spatially resolve the accretion disk structure in strongly lensed quasars. Some of the objects (like Einstein's cross) are reasonably consistent with the predictions of the standard accretion disk model. In other cases, the size of the emitting region is larger than predicted by the standard thin disk theory and practically independent on wavelength. This may be interpreted as an observational manifestation of an optically-thick scattering envelope possibly related to super-Eddington accretion with outflows.
