Observations of 43 GHz 28SiO (v = 1, J = 1-0) masers in the circumstellar envelope of the M-type semi-regular variable star VX Sgr were performed using the VLBA at 3 epochs during 1999 April-May. By tracing 42 matched maser features appearing in all the three epochs, we determined the contraction of an SiO maser shell toward VX Sgr at a velocity of about 4 km s−1 at a distance of 1.7 kpc to VX Sgr. We also report on some preliminary results from our first epoch of simultaneous VLBA observations of three 7 mm SiO masers toward VX Sgr.

The globular cluster ω Centauri is one of the largest and most massive members of the Galactic system. Its classification as a globular cluster has been challenged making it a candidate for being the stripped core of an accreted dwarf galaxy; this and the fact that it has one of the largest velocity dispersions for star clusters in our galaxy makes it an interesting candidate for harboring an intermediate mass black hole. We measure the surface brightness profile from integrated light on an HST/ACS image, and find a central power-law cusp of logarithmic slope -0.08. We also analyze Gemini GMOS-IFU kinematic data for a 5”x5” field centered on the nucleus of the cluster, as well as for a field 14″ away. We detect a clear rise in the velocity dispersion from 18.6 kms−1 at 14″ to 23 kms−1 in the center. Given the very large core in ω Cen (2.58'), an increase in the dispersion in the central 10″ is difficult to attribute to stellar remnants, since it requires too many dark remnants and the implied configuration would dissolve quickly given the relaxation time in the core. However, the increase could be consistent with the existence of a central black hole. Assuming a constant M/L for the stars within the core, the dispersion profile from these data and data at larger radii implies a black hole mass of 4.0+0.75−1.0×104M⊙. We have also run flattened, orbit-based models and find a similar mass. In addition, the no black hole case for the orbit model requires an extreme amount of radial anisotropy, which is difficult to preserve given the short relaxation time of the cluster.

Gaia photometric capabilities should distinguish quasars to a high degree of certainty. With this, they should also be able to deliver a clean sample of quasars with a negligible trace of stellar contaminants. However, a purely photometric sample could miss a non negligible percentage of ICRF sources counterparts - and this interface is required to align with the ICRS and de-rotate the GCRF (Gaia Celestial Reference Frame), on grounds of continuity. To prepare a minimum clean sample forming the initial quasar catalogue for the Gaia mission, an all sky ensemble was formed containing 128,257 candidates. Among them there is at least one redshift determination for 98.75%, and at least one magnitude determination for 99.20% of the targets. The sources were collected from different optical and radio lists. We analyze the redshift, magnitude, and color distributions, their relationships, as well as their degree of completeness.

Complementary, the candidate sources enable to form an optical representation of the ICRS from first principles, namely, kinematically non-rotating with respect to the ensemble of distant extragalactic objects, aligned to the mean equator and dynamical equinox of J2000, and realized by a list of adopted coordinates of extragalactic sources.

We investigate the secular evolution of non-resonant exoplanetary systems consisting of a central star and two co-planar planets using a semi-numerical averaging method of the first order in planetary masses (in this case equivalent to “averaging by scissors” or simply dropping the fast periodic terms). The resulting Hamiltonian level curves for different exoplanetary systems were compared to those obtained by direct numerical integration. Studying the dependence of the reliability of the averaging method (as well as chaoticity of numerically integrated trajectories) upon the initial conditions, we found that the averaging methods fails even for Hill stable systems. Based on the Hill stability criterion we introduced empirically a more restrictive stability condition, that enabled us to give an estimate for the region of validity of the averaging method in the plane of initial conditions.

Stability of spherical and thin disk stellar clusters surrounding massive black holes are studied. Due to the black hole, stars with sufficiently low angular momenta escape from the system through the loss cone. We show that stability of spherical clusters crucially depend on whether the distribution of stars is monotonic or non-monotonic in angular momentum. It turns out that only non-monotonic distributions can be unstable. At the same time the instability in disk clusters is possible for both types of distributions.

We explore the connection between the central supermassive blackholes (SMBH) in galaxies and the dark matter halo through the relation between the masses of the SMBHs and the maximum circular velocities of their host galaxies, as well as the relationship between stellar velocity dispersion of the spheroidal component and the circular velocity. We rely on a heterogeneous sample containing galaxies of all types. The only requirement is that the galaxy has direct measurements of its SMBH mass, MBH, circular velocity, vc, and velocity dispersion, σ. We present a direct observational MBH − vc relation.

We study the formation, growth, and co-evolution of single and multiple supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and compact objects like neutron stars, white dwarfs, and stellar mass black holes in galactic nuclei and star clusters, focusing on the role of stellar dynamics. In this paper we focus on one exemplary topic out of a wider range of work done, the study of orbital parameters of binary black holes in galactic nuclei (binding energy, eccentricity, relativistic coalescence) as a function of initial parameters. In some cases the classical evolution of black hole binaries in dense stellar systems drives them to surprisingly high eccentricities, which is very exciting for the emission of gravitational waves and relativistic orbit shrinkage. Such results are interesting to the emerging field of gravitational wave astronomy, in relation to a number of ground and space based instruments designed to measure gravitational waves from astrophysical sources (VIRGO, Geo600, LIGO, LISA). Our models self-consistently cover the entire range from Newtonian dynamics to the relativistic coalescence of SMBH binaries.

Gaia, ESA's ambitious star-mapper mission due for launch late-2011, will provide multi-epoch micro-arcsecond astrometric and milli-magnitude photometric data for the brightest one billion objects in the sky, down to at least magnitude 20. Spectroscopic data will simultaneously be collected for the subset of the brightest 100 million stars, down to about magnitude 17. This massive data volume will allow astronomers to reconstruct the structure, evolution and formation history of the Milky Way. It will also revolutionize studies of the solar system and stellar physics and will contribute to diverse research areas, ranging from extra-solar planets to general relativity.

Underlying Gaia's scientific harvest will lie in a Catalogue, built on the fundamental space-based measurements. During the 5-year nominal operational lifetime, Gaia's payload, with its CCD mosaic containing 1 billion pixels, will autonomously detect all objects of interest and observe them throughout their passage of the focal plane. This paper discusses the workings of the Gaia instrument, details its payload, and discusses in depth how the scientific measurements will be collected. It addresses issues like maintenance of the scanning law, on-board data processing, the detection and confirmation of objects (single and multiple stars), the detection and rejection of cosmic rays and solar protons, the fundamental science measurements themselves composed of windows of CCD samples (pixels), and special strategies employed to maximize the science return for moving (i.e., solar-system) objects. The paper also explains how an on-board priority scheme will ensure catalogue completeness down to the faintest magnitudes possible, despite the limited ground-station availability and the enormous data volume that will be sent to the ground.

We report in this paper the numerical simulations of the capture into the 3:1 mean-motion resonance between the planets b and c in the 55 Cancri system. The results show that this resonance can be obtained by a differential planetary migration. The moderate initial eccentricities, relatively slower migration and suitable eccentricity damping rate increase significantly the probability of being trapped in this resonance. Otherwise, the system crosses the 3:1 commensurability avoiding resonance capture, to be eventually captured into a 2:1 resonance or some other higher-order resonances. After capture into resonance, the system can jump from one orbital configuration to another one if the migration continues, making a large region of the configuration space accessible for a resonance system. These investigations help us understand the diversity of resonance configurations and put some constraints on the early dynamical evolution of orbits in the extra-solar planetary systems.

We present the results of survey and time-monitoring observations of SiO J=2–1 and J=3–2 masers towards evolved stars with the 14 m radio telescope at Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory (TRAO) from 1995 February to 2001 February. The first detection of SiO v=3, J=2–1 maser emission toward S-type Mira variable χ Cyg is also presented.

The Statutes of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) define the goals and organizational structure of the Union, while the Bye-Laws specify the main tasks of the various bodies of the Union in implementing the provisions of the Statutes. The Working Rules are designed to assist the membership and governing bodies of the Union in carrying out these tasks in an appropriate and effective manner. Each of the sections below is preceded by an introduction outlining the goals to be accomplished by the procedures specified in the succeeding paragraphs. The Executive Committee updates the Working Rules as necessary to reflect current procedures and to optimize the services of the IAU to its membership.

The program of IAU scientific meetings is one of the most important means by which the IAU pursues its goal of promoting astronomy through international collaboration. A large fraction of the Union's budget is devoted to the support of the IAU scientific meetings. The Executive Committee (EC) places great emphasis on maintaining high scientific standards, coverage of a balanced spectrum of topics, and an appropriately international flavor for the programme of IAU Meetings. In that respect, the ICSU rules on non-discrimination in the access of qualified scientists from all parts of the world to any IAU meeting apply.

Near-separatrix motion is a kind of motion of two planets with their relative apsidal longitude near the boundary between libration and circulation. Observed multiple planetary systems seem to favor near-separatrix motions between neighboring planets. In this report, we study the probability that near-separatrix motion occurs with both the linear secular system and full three-body systems. We find that generally the ratio of near-separatrix motion is small unless the eccentricities of the two planets differ from each other by an order of magintude, or they are in mean motion resonance. To explore the dynamical procedures causing the near-separatrix motion, we suppose a modification to scattering model by adding a mass-accretion process during the protoplanet growth. Statistics on the modified scattering model indicate that the probability of the final planet pairs in near-separatrix motion is high (∼ 85%), which may explain the high occurrence of near-separatrix motions in observed planetary systems.

We present a new database of circumstellar OH masers at 1612, 1665, and 1667 MHz. The database contains 10774 observations and 2274 stars with OH maser emission detected. The database contains flux densities and velocities of the two strongest maser peaks, the expansion velocity of the shell and the radial velocity of the star. Access to the database is possible over the Web (www.hs.uni-hamburg.de/maserdb), allowing cone searches for individual objects and lists of objects. Object selection is possible on the base of flux densities and velocities.

A beam of light from a background source to an observer is deflected by a gravitational body when travelling through the space in its vicinity. The deflection changes with configuration of the background source, the gravitational body and the observer, and the amount of deflection is dependent on the gravitational body's mass. It is anticipated that its mass could be determined if the shift can be measured by future precise astrometric projects such as Gaia or SIM-PlanetQuest.

Compact star clusters are commonly found in the centers of galaxies and may foster formation of intermediate-mass “seed” black holes that facilitate the growth of supermassive black holes in galaxy nuclei. Such star clusters can be studied with minimal background starlight contamination in bulgeless galaxies. We present new results that point to the presence of an accreting black hole associated with the central star cluster in the Sd galaxy NGC 1042, and discuss implications for the bulge-black hole connection.

We present the first results of a series of Monte-Carlo simulations investigating the imprints of a central black hole on the core structure of globular clusters. We investigate the three-dimensional and the projected density profile of the inner regions of idealized as well as more realistic globular cluster models, taking into account a stellar mass spectrum, stellar evolution and allowing for a larger, more realistic, number of stars than was previously possible with direct N-body methods. We compare our results to other N-body simulations published previously in the literature.

The early evolution of dense stellar systems is governed by massive single star and binary evolution. Core collapse of dense massive star clusters can lead to the formation of very massive objects through stellar collisions (M≥ 1000M⊙). Stellar wind mass loss determines the evolution and final fate of these objects, and determines whether they form black holes (with stellar or intermediate mass) or explode as pair instability supernovae, leaving no remnant. We present a computationally inexpensive evolutionary scheme for very massive stars that can readily be implemented in an N-body code. Using our new N-body code ‘Youngbody’ which includes a detailed treatment of massive stars as well as this new scheme for very massive stars, we discuss the formation of intermediate mass and stellar mass black holes in young starburst regions. A more detailed account of these results can be found in Belkus, Van Bever & Vanbeveren (2007).
