We show that a large number of elliptic curve L-functions do not vanish at the central point, conditionally on the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis and on an assumption on the regular distribution of the root number.

For any integers $d,n \geq 2$, let $X \subset \mathbb{P}^{n}$ be a non-singular hypersurface of degree $d$ that is defined over the rational numbers. The main result in this paper is a proof that the number of rational points on $X$ which have height at most $B$ is $O(B^{n - 1 + \varepsilon})$, for any $\varepsilon > 0$. The implied constant in this estimate depends at most upon $d$, $\varepsilon$ and $n$.

Our aim in this paper is to prove Deuber's conjecture on sparse partition regularity, that for every $m$, $p$ and $c$ there exists a subset of the natural numbers whose $(m,p,c)$-sets have high girth and chromatic number. More precisely, we show that for any $m$, $p$, $c$, $k$ and $g$ there is a subset $S$ of the natural numbers that is sufficiently rich in $(m,p,c)$-sets that whenever $S$ is $k$-coloured there is a monochromatic $(m,p,c)$-set, yet is so sparse that its $(m,p,c)$-sets do not form any cycles of length less than $g$.

Our main tools are some extensions of Nešetřil–Rödl amalgamation and a Ramsey theorem of Bergelson, Hindman and Leader. As a sideline, we obtain a Ramsey theorem for products of trees that may be of independent interest.

Recent works have used the theory of modular forms to establish linear congruences for the partition function and for traces of singular moduli. We show that this type of phenomenon is completely general, by finding similar congruences for the coefficients of any weakly holomorphic modular form on any congruence subgroup $\Gamma_0 (N)$. In particular, we give congruences for a wide class of partition functions and for traces of CM values of arbitrary modular functions on certain congruence subgroups of prime level.

Let $G$ denote a connected semisimple and simply connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic and let $g$ denote a regular element of $G$. Let $X$ denote any equivariant embedding of $G$. We prove that the closure of the conjugacy class of $g$ within $X$ is normal and Cohen–Macaulay. Moreover, when $X$ is smooth we prove that this closure is a local complete intersection. As a consequence, the closure of the unipotent variety within $X$ shares the same geometric properties.

We consider the model theory of the real and complex fields with a multiplicative group having the Mann property. Among these groups are the finitely generated multiplicative groups in these fields. As a by-product we obtain some results on groups with the Mann property in rings of Witt vectors and in fields of positive characteristic.k

We discuss which part of the rationalized algebraic $K$-theory of a group ring is detected via trace maps to Hochschild homology, cyclic homology, periodic cyclic or negative cyclic homology.

This paper establishes recognition theorems for the finite Lie-type groups defined in odd characteristic $p$. The hypotheses of these theorems are couched in terms of certain local data in the form of an amalgam which is called a weak $BN$-pair of rank 2. The groups to be recognized are completions of these amalgams which satisfy the condition of being of local characteristic $p$ (a condition satisfied by the finite Lie-type groups defined in characteristic $p$). The results presented will find application in one of the ongoing revisions of the finite simple group classification.

A gap in the proofs of Lemma 2.3 and Theorem 2.4 in the above paper is corrected.

Let $H$ be the Iwahori–Hecke algebra associated with $S_n$, the symmetric group on $n$ symbols. This algebra has two important bases: the Kazhdan–Lusztig basis and the Murphy basis. We establish a precise connection between the two bases, allowing us to give, for the first time, purely algebraic proofs for a number of fundamental properties of the Kazhdan–Lusztig basis and Lusztig's results on the $a$-function.

We complete the determination of how far convex maps can deform discs in each of the three classical geometries. The euclidean case was settled by Nehari in 1976, and the spherical case by Mejía and Pommerenke in 2000. We find the sharp bound on the Schwarzian derivative of a hyperbolically convex function and thus complete the hyperbolic case. This problem was first posed by Ma and Minda in a series of papers published in the 1980s. Mejía and Pommerenke then produced partial results and a conjecture as to the extremal function in 2000. Their function maps onto a domain bounded by two proper geodesic sides, a ‘hyperbolic strip’. Applying a generalization of the Julia variation and a critical Step Down Lemma, we show that there is an extremal function mapping onto a domain with at most two geodesic sides. We then verify using special function theory that, among the remaining candidates, the two-sided domain of Mejía and Pommerenke is in fact extremal. This correlates nicely with the euclidean and spherically convex cases in which the extremal is known to be a map onto a two-sided ‘strip’.

Non-singular toric embeddings with dual defect are classified. The associated polytopes, called defect polytopes, are proven to be the class of Delzant integral polytopes for which a combinatorial invariant vanishes. The structure of a defect polytope is described.

The main part of the paper deals with local existence and global existence versus blow-up for solutions of the Laplace equation in bounded domains with a non-linear dynamical boundary condition. More precisely, we study the problem consisting in: (1) the Laplace equation in $(0, \infty) \times \Omega$; (2) a homogeneous Dirichlet condition $(0, \infty) \times \Gamma_0$; (3) the dynamical boundary condition $ \frac {\partial u}{\partial \nu} = - |u_t|^{m-2} u_t + |u|^{p - 2} u$ on $(0, \infty) \times \Gamma_1$; (4) the initial condition $u(0, x) = u_0 (x)$ on $\partial \Omega$. Here $\Omega$ is a regular and bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, with $n \ge 1$, and $\Gamma_0$ and $\Gamma_1$ endow a measurable partition of $\partial \Omega$. Moreover, $m>1$, $2 \le p < r$, where $r = 2 (n - 1) / (n - 2)$ when $n \ge 3$, $r = \infty$ when $n = 1,2$, and $u_0 \in H^{1/2} (\partial \Omega)$, $u_0 = 0$ on $\Gamma_0$.

The final part of the paper deals with a refinement of a global non-existence result by Levine, Park and Serrin, which is applied to the previous problem.

Let $D$ be a division algebra over a base field $k$. The homological transcendence degree of $D$, denoted by $\text{Htr}\; D$, is defined to be the injective dimension of the algebra $D \otimes_k D^{\circ}$. We show that $\text{Htr}$ has several useful properties which the classical transcendence degree has. We extend some results of Resco, Rosenberg, Schofield and Stafford, and compute $\text{Htr}$ for several classes of division algebras. The main tool for the computation is Van den Bergh's rigid dualizing complex.

A lemma of Tits establishes a connection between the simple connectivity of an incidence geometry and the universal completion of an amalgam induced by a sufficiently transitive group of automorphisms of that geometry. In the present paper, we generalize this lemma to intransitive geometries, thus opening the door for numerous applications. We treat ourselves some amalgams related to intransitive actions of finite orthogonal groups, as a first class of examples.

Via a random construction we establish necessary conditions for $L^p (\ell^q)$ inequalities for certain families of operators arising in harmonic analysis. In particular, we consider dilates of a convolution kernel with compactly supported Fourier transform, vector maximal functions acting on classes of entire functions of exponential type, and a characterization of Sobolev spaces by square functions and pointwise moduli of smoothness.

Let $H$ be a Hopf algebra and let $\mathcal{M}_s (H)$ be the category of all left $H$-modules and right $H$-comodules satisfying appropriate compatibility relations. An object in $\mathcal{M}_s (H)$ will be called a stable anti-Yetter–Drinfeld module (over $H$) or a SAYD module, for short. To each $M \in \mathcal{M}_s (H)$ we associate, in a functorial way, a cyclic object $\mathrm{Z}_\ast (H, M)$. We show that our construction can be used to compute the cyclic homology of the underlying algebra structure of $H$ and the relative cyclic homology of $H$-Galois extensions.

Let $K$ be a Hopf subalgebra of $H$. For an arbitrary $M \in \mathcal{M}_s (K)$ we define a right $H$-comodule structure on $\mathrm{Ind}_K^H M := H \otimes_K M$ so that $\mathrm{Ind}_K^H M$ becomes an object in $\mathcal{M}_s (H)$. Under some assumptions on $K$ and $M$ we compute the cyclic homology of $\mathrm{Z}_\ast (H, \mathrm{Ind}_K^H M)$. As a direct application of this result, we describe the relative cyclic homology of strongly graded algebras. In particular, we calculate the cyclic homology of group algebras and quantum tori.

Finally, when $H$ is the enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, we construct a spectral sequence that converges to the cyclic homology of $H$ with coefficients in a given SAYD module $M$. We also show that the cyclic homology of almost symmetric algebras is isomorphic to the cyclic homology of $H$ with coefficients in a certain SAYD module.

The paper has two objectives. On the one hand, we study left Haar null sets, a measure-theoretic notion of smallness on Polish, not necessarily locally compact, groups. On the other hand, we introduce and investigate two classes of Polish groups which are closely related to this notion and to amenability. We show that left Haar null sets form a $\sigma$-ideal and have the Steinhaus property on Polish groups which are ‘amenable at the identity’, and that they lose these two properties in the presence of appropriately embedded free subgroups. As an application we prove an automatic continuity result for universally measurable homomorphisms from inverse limits of sequences of amenable, locally compact, second countable groups to second countable groups.

We define the notion of a Kirby element of a ribbon category $\mathcal{C}$ (not necessarily semisimple). Kirby elements lead to 3-manifold invariants. We characterize a class of Kirby elements, the algebraic Kirby elements, in terms of the structure maps of a Hopf algebra in $\mathcal{C}$. This class is sufficiently large to recover the quantum invariants of 3-manifolds of Reshetikhin and Turaev, of Hennings, Kauffman and Radford, and of Lyubashenko when these are well defined. The cases of a semisimple ribbon category and of a category of representations are explored in detail.

Let $G$ be a group, $F$ a field of prime characteristic $p$ and $V$ a finite-dimensional $FG$-module. Let $L(V)$ denote the free Lie algebra on $V$ regarded as an $FG$-submodule of the free associative algebra (or tensor algebra) $T(V)$. For each positive integer $r$, let $L^r (V)$ and $T^r (V)$ be the $r$th homogeneous components of $L(V)$ and $T(V)$, respectively. Here $L^r (V)$ is called the $r$th Lie power of $V$. Our main result is that there are submodules $B_1$, $B_2$, ... of $L(V)$ such that, for all $r$, $B_r$ is a direct summand of $T^r(V)$ and, whenever $m \geqslant 0$ and $k$ is not divisible by $p$, the module $L^{p^mk} (V)$ is the direct sum of $L^{p^m} (B_k)$, $L^{p^{m - 1}} (B_{pk})$, ..., $L^1 (B_{p^mk})$. Thus every Lie power is a direct sum of Lie powers of $p$-power degree. The approach builds on an analysis of $T^r (V)$ as a bimodule for $G$ and the Solomon descent algebra.
