Harvest weed seed control is an alternative non-chemical approach to weed management that targets escaped weed seeds at the time of crop harvest. Relatively little is known on how these methods will work on species in the US. Two of the most prominent weeds in soybean production in the midsouthern US are Palmer amaranth and barnyardgrass. Typically, when crop harvesting occurs the weed seed has already either shattered or is taken into the combine and may be redistributed in the soil seedbank. This causes further weed seed spread and may contribute to the addition of resistant seeds in the seedbank. There is little research on how much seed is retained on different weed species at or beyond harvest time. Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the percentage of total Palmer amaranth and barnyardgrass seed production that was retained on the plant during delayed soybean harvest. Retained seed over time was similar between 2015 and 2016, but was significantly different between years for only Palmer amaranth. Seed retention did not differ between years for either weed species. Palmer amaranth and barnyardgrass retained 98 and 41% of their seed at soybean maturity and 95 and 32% of their seed one month after soybean maturity, respectively. Thus, this research indicates that if there are escaped Palmer amaranth plants and soybean is harvested in a timely manner, most seed will enter the combine and offer potential for capture or destruction of these seeds using harvest weed seed control tactics. While there would be some benefit to using HWSC for barnyardgrass, the utility of this practice on mitigating herbicide resistance would be less pronounced than that of Palmer amaranth because of the reduced seed retention or early seed shatter.

Field studies were conducted in 19-cm-row soybean during 1997 and 1998 to evaluate the rate and timing of glyphosate applications applied alone at 0.42 and 0.63 kg ae/ha and with other herbicides to glyphosate-resistant soybean in terms of weed control, soybean yield, and net return. Weed species included barnyardgrass, hemp sesbania, pitted morningglory, and prickly sida. Among glyphosate-alone weed control programs, sequential applications generally provided the highest and most consistent control of all species evaluated (above 90% for broadleaf species). Glyphosate applied in combination with selective postemergence (POST) herbicides or following soil-applied herbicides controlled most species comparable to sequential glyphosate applications. Most herbicide programs, except for single glyphosate applications, were comparable to sequential glyphosate applications in terms of soybean yield and net return and ranged from 2,221 to 2,827 kg/ha and $410.28 to $549.60/ha. Depending on the year, either one or two glyphosate applications were needed for adequate weed control in programs with a soil-applied herbicide. Glyphosate rate affected neither weed control, yield, nor net return. Depending on a producer's management style and weed spectrum, weed control programs with glyphosate alone, in combination with another POST herbicide, or following soil-applied herbicides are all viable options in drilled glyphosate-resistant soybean.

An invert emulsion with low viscosity and excellent water-holding properties was developed for delivery of fungal weed pathogens (mycoherbicides). Alternaria cassiae, a pathogen of sicklepod, proliferated after incorporation of spores in the emulsion. The oil phase (CDQ-1) contained paraffin wax, a paraffinic spray oil, and an unsaturated monoglyceride emulsifier (Myverol 18–99). The oil phase was mixed 1:1 (by weight) with water to form the invert, which was sprayed onto glass plates for testing of water retention properties. Water contents ranged from 22% (with A. cassiae present) to 41% (without fungus) for 0.6 to 0.7-mm2 spray deposits after 24-h storage at 21 C and 65% relative humidity. An invert emulsion containing lactofen was prepared using the CDQ-1 formulation.

The effect of N levels, weed control treatments, and their interaction on maize yield and weed growth in sandy soils is not completely understood. Therefore, field experiments were conducted during 2005 and 2006 to determine if management can improve maize competitiveness with weeds, and thus achieve the yield potential of maize in sandy soils. The experiment included three N levels (300, 338, and 375 kg/ha) and five weed control treatments, e.g., hand hoeing twice, hand hoeing three times, fluroxypr + hoeing once, hoeing once + bispyribac-Na, and a nonweeded check. N rates affected dry weight of weeds growing with maize except with large crabgrass. Biomass of common purslane, considered a nitrophilous species, was increased by all N levels. Weeds were controlled by all treatments compared with the nontreated check; however, herbicide treatments were not superior to hand-hoeing treatments. Using more N favored growth and yield of maize more than weeds. Adding N fertilizer also improved most yield parameters. Highest grain yield of maize resulted at 375 kg/ha N. All weed control treatments improved grain yield two- to threefold compared with the nonweeded check. The interaction between N rates and weed control treatments had significant effects on dry biomass of common purslane and barnyardgrass, as well as grain index and biological yield parameters of maize. Grain yields were improved with fluroxypyr applied 2 wk after sowing (WAS) maize followed by one hand hoeing 6 WAS or hoeing at 3 WAS followed by bispyribac-Na applied 6 WAS. However, highest yields were obtained by hoeing early during the growing season.

Goosegrass is a problematic weed in turfgrass, and overuse of dinitroaniline (dna) herbicides has resulted in evolution of resistant populations. The objectives of this research were to (1) evaluate responses of a susceptible (S) goosegrass compared to a suspected resistant (R) biotype from Griffin, GA to prodiamine, and (2) evaluate efficacy of various PRE herbicides for control. Prodiamine rates required for 50% control and 50% shoot reductions after 6 wk for R-goosegrass measured > 13.44 and 3.2 kg ai ha−1, respectively, whereas rates for the S-population measured 0.45 and < 0.42 kg ha−1, respectively. In field experiments, sequential applications of dithiopyr and prodiamine provided < 20% control of R-goosegrass over 2 yr. Single applications of dimethenamid-P at 1.68 kg ai ha−1 provided < 50% goosegrass control in 2011 but provided excellent control (≥ 90%) at 7 mo after initial treatments (MAIT) in 2012. Single and sequential applications of indaziflam provided excellent control of goosegrass in both years, and oxadiazon controlled goosegrass > 85% at 7 MAIT in 2011 and ≥ 90% in 2012. Single and sequential PRE sulfentrazone applications controlled goosegrass < 60% in 2011 but averaged 94% control in 2012. Overall, indaziflam and oxadiazon provided good (80 to 89%) to excellent control of dna-resistant goosegrass in both years, but dimethenamid and sulfentrazone were inconsistent.

Outside its native range, smooth cordgrass is a noxious weed in estuaries throughout the world. Trials were conducted to evaluate smooth cordgrass control with imazapyr at various timings, rates, and spray volumes, and with several surfactants; comparisons were made with glyphosate, the sole herbicide registered in the United States for estuarine use. Across years, all sites, application dates, and experiments, it was found that smooth cordgrass control with imazapyr at 1.68 kg/ha was better and more consistent than with glyphosate at 8.4 kg/ha. Control with imazapyr at 0.84 kg/ha was comparable to control with glyphosate at 8.4 kg/ha. The time between application and tidal inundation over the canopy affected the efficacy of imazapyr less than that of glyphosate. There was a lack of consistent effects across dates of application. For imazapyr, a higher application volume (467 L/ha) usually provided better control than did the low volume (93 L/ha), but excellent control was achieved using ultra-low application volumes (23 and 47 L/ha) if the dry time was greater than 12 h. Several surfactants provided comparable efficacy for imazapyr.

Field studies were conducted in 1998 and 1999 at two Illinois locations to compare flumioxazin and pendimethalin for preemergence (PRE) weed control and determine the benefit of these herbicides when followed by (fb) postemergence (POST) herbicides, glyphosate, imazethapyr, and imazamox. In early weed control ratings taken before POST applications, flumioxazin alone at 105 g ai/ha or pendimethalin alone at 1,120 g ai/ha resulted in less than 80% control of giant foxtail, but controlled common lambsquarters at least 85% in all experiments. Control of large-seeded broadleaf weeds with flumioxazin or pendimethalin varied greatly between experiments. At Urbana in 1998, where moisture was adequate before and after PRE applications, flumioxazin controlled velvetleaf, common cocklebur, and ivyleaf morningglory at least 90%. With the latter two species, control decreased in the subsequent year, probably because of the reduced precipitation after the PRE applications. Sequential applications including a PRE herbicide provided control up to 25% greater than did POST only treatments. At Dekalb in both years and Urbana in 1998, soybean yields were greater with most treatments containing a PRE fb POST application than with the treatments containing only POST applications.

Several herbicide-based weed management programs for glyphosate-tolerant cotton were compared in eight field studies across Alabama during 1996 and 1997. Weed management programs ranged from traditional, soil-applied residual herbicide programs to more recently developed total postemergence (POST) herbicide programs. Pitted morningglory and sicklepod control was best achieved with fluometuron applied preemergence (PRE) followed by (fb) a single POST over-the-top (POT) application of glyphosate fb a POST-directed application of glyphosate. Annual grass control was better with the preplant incorporated (PPI) programs at two of three locations in both years. Treatments that included at least one glyphosate POT application gave increased grass control over no glyphosate or pyrithiobac POT. Velvetleaf control was improved with the addition of glyphosate POT. A herbicide program using no POST herbicides yielded significantly less seed cotton than any program using POST herbicides at one location. PRE- and POST-only weed management programs at another location produced more seed cotton and gave greater net returns than PPI programs. Similarly, net returns at that same location were equivalent for both PRE- and POST-only programs, and less for PPI programs. POST-only programs yielded highest amounts of seed cotton and netted greater returns.

Field experiments were conducted in Platte County, Missouri, during 2006 and 2007 to evaluate PRE, POST, and PRE followed by (fb) POST herbicide programs for the control of glyphosate-resistant waterhemp in soybean. All PRE fb POST treatments resulted in at least 66 and 70% control of glyphosate-resistant waterhemp in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Control of glyphosate-resistant waterhemp was less than 23% with lactofen and acifluorfen in 2006, but at least 64% in 2007. Variability in control likely resulted from differences in trial locations and a population of protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO)–resistant waterhemp at the Platte County site in 2006 compared with 2007. In both years, glyphosate resulted in less than 23% control of glyphosate-resistant waterhemp and provided the least control of all herbicide programs. Programs containing PRE herbicides resulted in waterhemp densities of less than 5 plants/m2, whereas the POST glyphosate treatment resulted in 38 to 70 plants/m2. Waterhemp seed production was reduced at least 78% in all PRE fb POST programs, from 55 to 71% in POST programs containing lactofen and acifluorfen and by only 21% in the POST glyphosate treatment. Soybean yields corresponded to the level of waterhemp control achieved in both years, with the lowest yields resulting from programs that provided poorest waterhemp control. PRE applications of S-metolachlor plus metribuzin provided one of the highest net incomes in both years and resulted in $271 to $340/ha greater net income than the glyphosate-only treatment. Collectively, the results from these experiments illustrate the effectiveness of PRE herbicides for the control of glyphosate-resistant waterhemp in glyphosate-resistant soybean and the inconsistency of PPO-inhibiting herbicides or PPO-inhibiting herbicide combinations for the control of waterhemp populations with multiple resistance to glyphosate and PPO-inhibiting herbicides.

POST weed control in soybean in the United States is difficult because weed resistance to herbicides has become more prominent. Herbicide applicators have grown accustomed to low carrier volume rates that are typical with glyphosate applications. These low carrier volumes are efficient for glyphosate applications and allow applicators to treat a large number of hectares in a timely manner. Alternative modes of action can require greater carrier volumes to effectively control weeds. Glyphosate, glufosinate, lactofen, fluazifop-P, and 2,4-D were evaluated in field and greenhouse studies using 47, 70, 94, 140, 187, and 281 L ha−1 carrier volumes. Spray droplet size spectra for each herbicide and carrier volume combination were also measured and used to determine their impact on herbicide efficacy. Glyphosate efficacy was maximized using 70 to 94 L ha−1 carrier volumes using droplets classified as medium. Glufosinate efficacy was maximized at 140 L ha−1 and decreased as droplet diameter decreased. For 2,4-D applications, efficacy increased when using carrier volumes equal to or greater than 94 L ha−1. Lactofen was most responsive to changes in carrier volume and performed best when applied in carrier volumes of at least 187 L ha−1. Carrier volume had little impact on fluazifop-P efficacy in this study and efficacy decreased when used on taller plants. Based on these data, applicators should use greater carrier volumes when using contact herbicides in order to maximize herbicide efficacy.

Field experiments were conducted in 1996, 1997, and 1998 at Lacombe and Lethbridge, AB, to determine the influence of early weed competition on field pea yields. Wild oat and Tartary buckwheat were removed from plots at weekly intervals after pea emergence by hand-weeding and maintained weed-free for the remainder of the growing season. Tartary buckwheat produced slightly more biomass than wild oat at Lacombe, whereas wild oat produced much more biomass than Tartary buckwheat at Lethbridge. Weed-free pea yields at Lacombe were always two- to threefold higher than at Lethbridge. At Lethbridge, early competition with Tartary buckwheat in all years, and with wild oat in 1998, did not reduce pea yields. In 1996 and 1997 at Lethbridge, pea yield reductions due to wild oat began at 2 wk after pea emergence; for the next 2 wk yield loss was linear, decreasing at an average rate of 97 kg/ha per day. Early weed competition led to pea yield losses at Lacombe in all 3 yr. The onset of yield loss at Lacombe over the 3-yr period ranged from 1 to 2 wk after pea emergence; for the next 2 to 3 wk yield loss was linear, decreasing at an average rate of 45 kg/ha per day. Yield losses after full-season weed competition ranged from 40 to 70% at both sites. Usually, the beginning of the critical weed-free period was at 1 or 2 wk after pea emergence. Optimum pea yields usually required weed removal very early in the pea life cycle; weed removal beyond 2 wk after pea emergence often protected only suboptimal yields.

The evolution of glyphosate and acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitor-resistant common waterhemp in the Midwestern United States has reduced the number of effective POST herbicide options for management of this problem weed in glyphosate-resistant soybean. Moreover, common waterhemp emerges throughout the crop growing season, justifying the need to evaluate herbicide programs that provide season-long control. The objectives of this study were to compare POST-only and PRE followed by (fb) POST herbicide programs for control of glyphosate-resistant common waterhemp in glyphosate-resistant soybean. Field experiments were conducted in 2013 and 2014 in Dodge County, NE, in a field infested with glyphosate-resistant common waterhemp. Programs containing PRE herbicides resulted in ≥83% control of common waterhemp and densities of ≤35 plantsm–2 at 21 d after PRE (DAPRE). Post-only herbicide programs resulted in <70% control and densities of 107 to 215 plants m–2 at 14 d after early-POST (DAEPOST) treatment. PRE fb POST herbicide programs, including saflufenacil plus imazethapyr plus dimethenamid-P, sulfentrazone plus cloransulam, or S-metolachlor plus metribuzin, fb fomesafen plus glyphosate; S-metolachlor plus fomesafen fb acifluorfen plus glyphosate resulted in >90% control of glyphosate-resistant common waterhemp throughout the growing season, reduced density to ≤7plantsm–2, ≥92% biomass reduction, and soybean yield >2,200kg ha–1. Averaged across herbicide programs, common waterhemp control was 84%, and density was 15 plants m–2 with PRE fb POST herbicide programs compared with 42% control, and density of 101 plants m–2 with POST-only herbicide programs at harvest. Results of this study indicated that PRE fb POST herbicide programs with effective modes of action exist for season-long control of glyphosate-resistant common waterhemp in glyphosate-resistant soybean.

Field studies were conducted in Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin to explore interactions among DPX-V9360 herbicide applied postemergence, terbufos insecticide applied as an in-furrow treatment, and the environment. Field corn (‘Pioneer 3751’) and sweet corn (‘Jubilee’) were planted with and without an in-furrow application of terbufos. DPX-V9360 was applied postemergence when the corn was in the 4- to 6-leaf stage at 0, 35, 70, 140, and 280 g ai ha-1 with nonionic surfactant and 28% N fertilizer solution. Crop response to DPX-V9360 was similar at all three locations, varying only in magnitude of injury. Crop injury was greater with Jubilee sweet corn than with Pioneer 3751 field corn. Injury to both hybrids increased as DPX-V9360 application rate increased. Application of terbufos increased injury from DPX-V9360 to both hybrids. Significant yield reduction did not occur with either hybrid when DPX-V9360 was applied at rates of 140 g ha-1 or less and no terbufos was applied.

A survey conducted across agricultural ecoregions of Saskatchewan in 1996 revealed that wild oat (Avena fatua) populations resistant to acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitors were present in approximately 10% of Saskatchewan fields (2.4 million ha). In the Aspen Parkland and Boreal Transition ecoregions, this increased to 17%. The objective of this study was to determine if agronomic practices promoted or delayed resistance and to assess producer awareness of herbicide resistance. Weed resistance and management questionnaire data from the 1996 resistance survey and management questionnaire data from the 1995 Saskatchewan weed survey were submitted to multiway frequency analysis. The frequency of occurrence of herbicide-resistant wild oat was related directly to ACCase inhibitor use. Resistance to cyclohexanedione (CHD) herbicides was not related to CHD use but to frequency of ACCase inhibitor use (i.e., CHD + aryloxyphenoxypropanoate [AOPP]), suggesting that the pressure imposed by AOPPs contributed to the selection of CHD resistance in wild oat. ACCase inhibitor use was more extensive in the Aspen Parkland and Boreal Transition ecoregions than in the Mixed and Moist Mixed Grassland ecoregions. Crop rotations were not conducive to rotation of herbicides with different sites of action. Frequency of ACCase inhibitor use increased with frequency of annual crops, in spite of the inclusion of cereal and dicot crops in the rotation. Producers utilizing conservation tillage practices in the Grassland ecoregions used proportionally more ACCase inhibitors than those using conventional tillage practices. This increase in ACCase use in conservation tillage systems did not result in an increased incidence of wild oat populations resistant to ACCase inhibitors. Producers reporting troublesome wild oat populations tended to have proportionally more ACCase-resistant wild oat. Producers who reported practicing weed sanitation were less likely to have resistant wild oat than those who were less careful. Increased awareness and implementation of management practices that will reduce the dependency on ACCase herbicides are required to better enable producers to prevent, delay, or manage herbicide-resistant wild oat populations.

Certified Crop Advisors of Arkansas and members of the Arkansas Crop Consultants Association were surveyed in Fall 2006 through direct mail to assess current weed management practices and needs in cotton from both a research and educational perspective. Consultants reported scouting 162,300 of the possible 473,700 ha of cotton grown in Arkansas. Collectively, glyphosate-resistant and enhanced glyphosate-resistant cultivars were reported grown on 98% of the cotton hectares. Ninety-five percent of the consultants believe the planting of enhanced glyphosate-resistant cultivars will increase over the next 5 yr. All consultants indicated a “moderate” to “high” level of concern with herbicide-resistant weeds in cotton, and 79% of the consultants suspect herbicide resistance in the fields they scout, predominately glyphosate-resistant horseweed. Horseweed, Palmer amaranth, and morningglories were the three most problematic weeds in cotton. A continued focus on resistant weed management was the most frequent research and educational request by consultants.

Stakeholders were surveyed across Nebraska to identify the problem weeds and assess common weed management practices. A total of 425 responses were returned across four Nebraska extension districts (Northeast, Panhandle, Southeast, and West Central). Collectively, 61.2% of total farmed or scouted areas in Nebraska were under no-till production, and corn and soybean were the major crops (82.3% of total farmed or scouted area). Common waterhemp, horseweed, and kochia were the most problematic weeds statewide. Widespread occurrence of glyphosate-resistant (GR) weeds such as common waterhemp, horseweed, kochia, and Palmer amaranth were a serious problem in GR crop production. Additionally, 60% of growers in Nebraska reported the presence of at least one GR weed species on their farms. The most commonly used preplant burndown herbicides were 2,4-D and glyphosate, followed by saflufenacil and dicamba. In Nebraska, 74% and 59% of corn and soybean growers, respectively, were using PRE herbicides; however, more than 80% of growers were using POST herbicides for in-crop weed management. Atrazine alone or in premix or tank mix with mesotrione, S-metolachlor, or acetochlor were the most widely applied PRE herbicides in corn and grain sorghum, whereas the most commonly used PRE herbicides in soybean were the inhibitors of acetolactate synthase (ALS) and protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO). Glyphosate was the most frequent choice of the survey respondents as a POST herbicide in GR corn and soybean; 2,4-D was the most commonly used POST herbicide in grain sorghum and wheat. In Nebraska, only 5.2% of total crop area was planted with glufosinate-resistant crops. Most of the respondents (89%) were aware of the new multiple herbicide–resistant crops, and 80% of them listed physical drift and volatility of the auxinic herbicides as their primary concern. Forty-eight percent of survey respondents identified herbicide-resistant weed management as their primary research and extension priority.

The number of computer applications for purposes of weed control decisions has increased dramatically in the past eight yr. During this time, many efficacy-, and population-based weed control decision aids have been developed. The complexity of decisions range from those based on optimal weed control (independent of net profitability) to those predicting weed population effects before most profitable treatments are selected. While the number of software applications has increased sharply, national software databases have not been funded and tracking has been made difficult. The purpose of this paper is to review the criteria upon which efficacy- and population-based weed control decision aids are founded, and to identify software currently available in each of the two categories.

Field studies were conducted in 1999, 2000, and 2001 to investigate weed control and crop safety with preemergence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) applications of mesotrione alone and in tank mixtures with acetochlor and atrazine. Corn injury was less than 4% with all mesotrione treatments in 1999 and 2001, but it was 8 to 20% in 2000, when rainfall was 3.1 cm 7 d after PRE applications. Mesotrione PRE at 0.16 and 0.24 kg ai/ha did not adequately control most broadleaf weeds or giant foxtail. Tank mixtures of mesotrione plus acetochlor controlled smooth pigweed and giant foxtail but did not adequately control common ragweed, common lambsquarters, or morningglory species. Control by tank mixtures of mesotrione plus atrazine at 0.56 kg ai/ha was frequently low and varied with rainfall after PRE applications. All weed species were controlled 80% or more by mesotrione plus acetochlor PRE or atrazine plus acetochlor PRE followed by mesotrione POST at 0.11 kg/ha.

Bispyribac-sodium is a POST herbicide that selectively controls annual bluegrass in creeping bentgrass, but inconsistent results with seasonal applications are believed to occur from temperature influences on bispyribac-sodium efficacy. Growth chamber experiments at the New Jersey Experimental Greenhouse Research Complex, New Brunswick, NJ, investigated three temperature regimes on ‘L-93’ creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass responses to bispyribac-sodium. Annual bluegrass and creeping bentgrass exhibited contrasting responses to bispyribac-sodium as temperature increased from 10 to 30 C. Regressions of 4 week after treatment (WAT) data revealed as temperature increased from 10 to 30 C, required bispyribac-sodium rates for 50% clipping reduction (CR50) of annual bluegrass decreased from 85 to 31 g ai/ha and required rates for 50% leaf chlorosis decreased from greater than 296 to 98, indicating increased herbicidal efficacy at higher temperatures. In contrast, required bispyribac-sodium rates for creeping bentgrass CR50 increased from 200 to greater than 296 as temperature increased from 10 to 30 C. Bispyribac-sodium discolored creeping bentgrass 0 to 20% at 20 and 30 C and discoloration increased 10 to 50% at 10 C. Thus, warmer temperatures (20 and 30 C) increase bispyribac-sodium efficacy for annual bluegrass control with minimal bentgrass discoloration; however, cooler temperatures (10 C) have minimal efficacy on annual bluegrass and increase bentgrass chlorosis.

Shredded newspaper (2.5, 7.6, 12.7, and 17.8 cm depth), chopped newspaper (2.5 and 7.6 cm), wheat straw (15.2 cm), black plastic, and plastic landscape fabric were evaluated during 1993 and 1994 in West Virginia for their effect on soil temperature, soil moisture, weed control, and yield in tomato. Shredded newspaper and wheat straw applied at 0, 2, 4, or 6 weeks after transplanting (WAT) and napropamide (2.1 kg ai/ha) plus metribuzin (0.28 kg ai/ha) applied at transplanting were evaluated during 1992 and 1993 in North Carolina for effect on weed control and tomato yield. Results from West Virginia indicated that shredded (7.6 cm) and chopped (7.6 cm) newspaper conserved moisture similar to higher application rates of the shredded material. Higher newspaper mulching rates reduced soil temperature compared to black plastic and bare ground. Chopped newspaper controlled weeds more consistently than other treatments. At least 7.6 cm of chopped newspaper mulch was required to control weeds at least 90%. Wheat straw was not as effective in controlling weeds as 7.6 cm or greater of newspaper mulch. Chopped newspaper provided higher tomato yields than shredded newspaper applied at the same rates. Mulches applied at 0, 2, or 4 WAT resulted in weed control similar to the chemical treatment. In North Carolina, mulches applied 2 or 4 WAT resulted in tomato yields similar to the chemical treatment.
