Field studies were conducted in 1999, 2000, and 2001 to determine the effectiveness of mesotrione applied preemergence (PRE) or postemergence (POST) in no-till corn. Also, a proposed prepackage mix of mesotrione plus acetochlor (1:11 ratio of mesotrione–acetochlor) in combinations with the trimethylsulfonium salt of glyphosate (glyphosate-TMS), paraquat, and 2,4-D was investigated. Mesotrione PRE at 235 g ai/ha or greater controlled common lambsquarters, smooth pigweed, and common ragweed at least 80%. POST mesotrione at 35 g/ha and higher controlled common lambsquarters 91% or greater. Mesotrione applied POST at 140 g/ha controlled smooth pigweed greater than 97%. Common ragweed control from POST mesotrione was inconsistent, ranging from 56 to 97%. PRE and POST applications of mesotrione did not adequately control goosegrass, giant foxtail, fall panicum, johnsongrass, or cutleaf eveningprimrose. The mesotrione plus acetochlor prepackage mix plus glyphosate-TMS or paraquat controlled field pansy and ivyleaf morningglory similar to or better than did the prepackage mixture of the isopropylamine salt of glyphosate (glyphosate-IPA) plus atrazine plus acetochlor. But common ragweed control by mesotrione plus acetochlor plus glyphosate-TMS or paraquat was occasionally lower than control by the prepackage mixture of glyphosate-IPA plus atrazine plus acetochlor. Corn injury was generally less than 10% with PRE and POST mesotrione applications.

Introduction of the Roundup Ready® Xtend system (Monsanto Co., St. Louis, MO) provides an alternative weed management option for growers, but of concern is the risk of dicamba injury to sensitive crops, particularly soybean from off-target movement and tank contamination. Experiments were conducted to determine the response of soybean to low rates of dicamba over a wide range of application timings. Two glufosinate-resistant varieties (HBK 4950LL–indeterminate and HALO 5.45LL–determinate) commonly grown in Arkansas were chosen for these studies. Two rates of dicamba, 2.18 and 8.75 g ae ha–1 (1/256× and 1/64× of the POST labeled rate for dicamba-resistant soybean), were applied at two vegetative (V4, V6) and six reproductive (R1 to R6) growth stages. Compared to the nontreated control, dicamba applied during late vegetative and early reproductive growth of soybean caused leaf injury, plant height reduction, and seed yield loss for both soybean cultivars. Averaged across dicamba rates applied at R1, soybean seed yield was reduced 14% for the HBK 4950LL cultivar and 19% for the HALO 5.45LL cultivar. Averaged over rates, dicamba applied at R1 to the HALO 5.45LL and HBK 4950LL soybean resulted in 48% and 43% visible injury 4 wk after treatment, respectively. Grain yield was similar to that of the nontreated control when dicamba was applied at the later reproductive stages averaged across rates.

Shredded newspaper (2.5, 7.6, 12.7, and 17.8 cm depth), chopped newspaper (2.5 and 7.6 cm), wheat straw (15.2 cm), black plastic, and plastic landscape fabric were evaluated during 1993 and 1994 in West Virginia for their effect on soil temperature, soil moisture, weed control, and yield in tomato. Shredded newspaper and wheat straw applied at 0, 2, 4, or 6 weeks after transplanting (WAT) and napropamide (2.1 kg ai/ha) plus metribuzin (0.28 kg ai/ha) applied at transplanting were evaluated during 1992 and 1993 in North Carolina for effect on weed control and tomato yield. Results from West Virginia indicated that shredded (7.6 cm) and chopped (7.6 cm) newspaper conserved moisture similar to higher application rates of the shredded material. Higher newspaper mulching rates reduced soil temperature compared to black plastic and bare ground. Chopped newspaper controlled weeds more consistently than other treatments. At least 7.6 cm of chopped newspaper mulch was required to control weeds at least 90%. Wheat straw was not as effective in controlling weeds as 7.6 cm or greater of newspaper mulch. Chopped newspaper provided higher tomato yields than shredded newspaper applied at the same rates. Mulches applied at 0, 2, or 4 WAT resulted in weed control similar to the chemical treatment. In North Carolina, mulches applied 2 or 4 WAT resulted in tomato yields similar to the chemical treatment. Shredded and chopped newspaper have potential as a mulching material but may vary in effect in different environments and vegetable crops.

The performance of the Robovator (F. Poulsen Engineering ApS, Hvals⊘, Denmark), a commercial robotic intrarow cultivator, was evaluated in direct-seeded broccoli and transplanted lettuce during 2014 and 2015 in Salinas, CA, and Yuma, AZ. The main objective was to evaluate the crop stand after cultivation, crop yield, and weed control efficacy of the Robovator compared with a standard cultivator. A second objective was to compare hand weeding time after cultivation within a complete integrated weed management (IWM) system. Herbicides were included as a component of the IWM system. The Robovator did not reduce crop stand or marketable yield compared with the standard cultivator. The Robovator removed 18 to 41% more weeds at moderate to high weed densities and reduced hand-weeding times by 20 to 45% compared with the standard cultivator. At low weed densities there was little difference between the cultivators in terms of weed control and hand-weeding times. The lower-hand weeding time with the Robovator treatments suggest that robotic intrarow cultivators can reduce dependency on hand weeding compared with standard cultivators. Technological advancements and price reductions of these types of machines will likely improve their weed removal efficacy and the long-term viability of IWM programs that will use them.

Jointed goatgrass (Aegilops cylindrica) is a serious problem for winter wheat producers throughout the western U.S. Interference from this weed can severely reduce grain yield and contaminate harvested grain, resulting in dockage losses. There are currently no selective herbicides registered for controlling jointed goatgrass in wheat. Imazamox, an imidazolinone herbicide, was applied to an imidazolinone herbicide-resistant (IMI) wheat mutant of the winter wheat cultivar ‘Fidel.’ Jointed goatgrass control from spring postemergence application of imazamox ranged from 61 to 97% when applied at 36 g/ha. Negligible crop injury from imazamox treatment was observed at 36 g/ha at several locations under dryland environments in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Wheat yield was increased 19 to 41% by imazamox treatment in three of four experiments. Percent dockage resulting from jointed goatgrass spikelet contamination of harvested wheat grain was eliminated by imazamox treatment. Introduction of the IMI trait into commercial wheat cultivars could provide an effective method for selective control of jointed goatgrass in winter wheat.

Weed populations develop herbicide resistance when they evolve due to selection pressure. Mutations and gene flow contribute to genetic variability and provide resistant alleles. The speed of resistance gene frequency increase is determined by the inheritance of resistance alleles relative to wild-type susceptibility and is influenced by the interaction between gene expression and selection. The goal of herbicide resistance management is to minimize selection pressure while maintaining adequate weed control. However, the specific nature of each herbicide, weed, and resistance combination determines the practices that optimize undesirable selection pressure. Therefore, generalized management strategies should be recommended with caution and must not be mandated without thorough evaluation on a case-by-case basis.

Field studies were conducted from 1990 through 1997 to evaluate the long-term effect of 2- and 3-yr rotations on the control of downy brome, jointed goatgrass, and feral rye in winter wheat. At the completion of the study, jointed goatgrass and feral rye densities averaged 8 plants/m2 and < 0.1 plant/m2 for the 2- and 3-yr rotations, respectively. Downy brome densities averaged < 0.5 plant/m2 for both the 2- and 3-yr rotations, with no treatment differences observed. Winter annual grasses were not eradicated after two cycles of the 3-yr rotations, but weed densities were reduced 10-fold compared to densities after one cycle and more than 100-fold compared with the 2-yr rotations. Wheat grain contamination with dockage and foreign material followed a similar trend. The 3-yr rotations were economically competitive with 2-yr rotations and provided superior control of the winter annual grass weeds.

Yellow nutsedge, a weed commonly present in Florida vegetable fields, may substantially reduce crop yields when not controlled. Soil fumigation with methyl bromide effectively controls nutsedges, but methyl bromide is being phased out of production and use in the United States. Therefore, nutsedge management in bell pepper is a cause for concern. An experiment was conducted during four seasons (spring and fall of 1999 and 2000) to determine the tolerance of bell pepper grown at two in-row spacings (23 and 31 cm) to interference resulting from planted yellow nutsedge tuber densities (0 to 120 tubers/m2). Relative to yields with no nutsedge, pepper fruit yields in each season were reduced 10% with fewer than 5 planted tubers/m2. Yield losses increased more rapidly with an increase in initial nutsedge density from 0 to 30 than from 30 to 120 tubers/m2. With 30 nutsedge tubers/m2, large fruit yield was reduced 54 to 74% compared to that with no nutsedge. Nutsedge shoots overtopped the pepper plants as early as 6 wk after treatment when, with 15 planted tubers/m2, nutsedge interference reduced pepper plant biomass by 10 to 47%. In the absence of methyl bromide, weed control strategies with high efficacy against yellow nutsedge will be needed for bell pepper production.

Agronomic research and extension personnel generally recognize the benefits of integrated pest management (IPM) but IPM practices have not been rapidly adopted by farmers. In order for applied research and extension programs to be as influential as possible, strategies and tactics must be evaluated in the context of the real-world constraints experienced by farmers. We investigated the linkage between farmers' pest management behaviors, attitudes, and constraints by analyzing an extensive corn pest management survey distributed throughout Wisconsin in 2002. Our objectives were to (1) create a benchmark against which future changes in pest management practices could be detected and (2) explore potential associations between practices and farm characteristics, e.g., farm size or commodity produced. A total of 213 farmers responded with descriptions of their operations; weed, insect, and disease pest management practices; crop consultant usage; interactions with their local agrichemical dealer; and attitudes regarding pest management decision-making. We compared the relative responses of cash-grain and dairy farmers as well as managers of large and small farms. Larger farm size and percentage of operation in cash-grain production were associated with an increased frequency of rotating crops, rotating herbicide families, and use of a broadcast herbicide application. Managers of large farms and/or cash-grain crops also more frequently indicated considering the level of pest control, price, carryover potential, weed resistance management, environmental safety, and risk to the applicator than did dairy or small-sized operations. Cash-grain farmers had significantly higher scores on a calculated IPM index than did dairy farmers (P < 0.0001). We also found a significant positive relationship between farm size and IPM score (P < 0.0001). Our results provide a benchmark for future comparisons of IPM adoption rates in Wisconsin and highlight the association between IPM research/extension and farmers' management behavior.

Field studies were conducted in 1996 and 1997 to determine postemergence control of purple (Cyperus rotundus) and yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) by single and sequential applications of bentazon, halosulfuron, and sulfentrazone; sequential applications of MSMA; and single applications of imazaquin and imazaquin plus MSMA. Sequential applications of halosulfuron at 70 g ai/ha controlled purple nutsedge more effectively at 10 wk after initial application (WAI) than all other herbicides. Single applications of imazaquin (0.56 kg ai/ha) or imazaquin plus monosodium salt of methylarsonic acid (MSMA, 2.24 kg ai/ha) controlled purple nutsedge adequately 6 WAI (78 and 90%, respectively) but not 18 WAI. Single applications of either halosulfuron (70 g/ha) or imazaquin plus MSMA or sequential applications of either bentazon (1.12 kg ai/ha), MSMA (2.8 kg/ha), or halosulfuron controlled yellow nutsedge greater than 80% by the end of the season in 1996 when nutsedge was in bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.). However, in absence of bermudagrass in 1997, only sulfentrazone or the halosulfuron sequential treatments controlled yellow nutsedge 13 WAI. In 1996, single and sequential applications of halosulfuron reduced viability of purple nutsedge tubers to 33 and 30%, respectively, compared to 84% in the nontreated control. However, herbicide treatments did not reduce tuber viability in 1997. Sulfentrazone (0.28 kg ai/ha) plus MSMA (2.24 kg/ha) and sequential MSMA applications reduced viability of yellow nutsedge tubers to 6 and 31%, respectively, in 1997.

A random mail survey of Ohio growers was conducted to determine the geographic distribution of weeds across Ohio and the influence of production practices on the severity of agronomic weed problems. Statewide, the ten most severe weed problems, in descending order, were Canada thistle > foxtail spp. > velvetleaf = common ragweed > common cocklebur > giant ragweed = annual morningglory spp. > quackgrass = common lambsquarters = Pennsylvania smartweed. Distribution of most weeds varied geographically. Infestations of common and honeyvine milkweeds, hemp dogbane, and tree seedlings increased as tillage was reduced. Infestations of common cocklebur and common ragweed decreased as tillage was reduced. As crop rotation became more diverse, infestations of velvetleaf, common cocklebur, giant ragweed, Pennsylvania smartweed, and jimsonweed decreased. Where rotations included forage or hay crops, infestations of large crabgrass, common chickweed, wild carrot, and common dandelion increased.

With increased reliance on glyphosate for weed control, weed species composition shifts are likely. Changes in relative abundance could arise from differential tolerance or resistance to, or avoidance of, glyphosate. This study characterized the potential changes in seedbank composition of a mixed population of summer annual weeds due to glyphosate application timing. Seven weeds common in soybean fields in the Midwest were introduced at known densities and treated with glyphosate at several treatment timings. Common lambsquarters, common sunflower, common waterhemp, eastern black nightshade, ivyleaf morningglory, shattercane, and woolly cupgrass were selected to represent a range of emergence patterns and tolerances to glyphosate. Seedling emergence and seed production were monitored. Differences in herbicide tolerance and avoidance, through markedly different weed emergence patterns, were strong contributors to projected changes in weed species composition. Lessened sensitivity to glyphosate allowed some emerged species, such as ivyleaf morningglory, to better survive the herbicide. Late emergence allowed others, such as shattercane and ivyleaf morningglory, to avoid glyphosate applications. Such mechanisms may allow specific species to increase in a continuous glyphosate system.

Feral rye and jointed goatgrass are winter annual grasses that infest winter wheat in the western United States. Currently, no herbicides are available that selectively control these weeds in wheat. Because of this constraint, producers need cultural practices that reduce the seed densities of these two grasses in the soil seedbank. This research shows that applying nitrogen 5 mo before wheat planting and increasing the seeding rate with a tall wheat cultivar reduces seed production per plant of either species by > 40%. However, tall wheat cultivars usually yield less grain than semidwarf cultivars. Producers can avoid this yield loss by combining narrow rows with time of N application and increased seeding rate of semidwarf cultivars. This combination reduces weed seed production similarly to cultural systems with tall cultivars.

In west central Minnesota the extent and duration of weed seed shed was measured for two years in corn that received cultivation but no herbicides. Percentage of seed production represented by viable (filled) seeds was about 79% for green foxtail, 68% for wild mustard, 49% for Pennsylvania smartweed, 48% for common lambsquarters, and 35% for redroot pigweed. Percentage viable seeds varied from 11% in 1993 to 59% in 1994 for redroot pigweed, but was more stable for other species. Seed shed commenced in late August in a cool year (1993) and early August in a warm year (1994). Average growing degree days (base 10 C) from corn planting until 25% seed shed was 983 for common lambsquarters, 984 for wild mustard, 1004 for Pennsylvania smartweed, and 1034 for both green foxtail and redroot pigweed. Brief weather events, such as wind storms, dispersed large percentages of total seed production within a single day. More than one-fifth of all viable seeds of green foxtail, redroot pigweed, and common lambsquarters were retained by the seedheads and dispersed by combines at harvest. In contrast, seeds of early-maturing species, such as wild mustard, were completely dispersed before corn harvest in the warmer year, but one-third of seeds were retained by seedheads at harvest in the cooler year. Measurement of seed shed was compared using five seed trap designs. The preferred design consisted of a 10-cm-diam plastic cup, whose bottom was replaced by a brass screen, and the entire unit attached to a small wooden stake for support. This design provided, on average, the highest estimates of seed production, least among-replication variability, highest correlation with weed population density and aboveground dry-weight, lowest assembly cost, and greatest ease for sample access and seed processing.

Control of southern crabgrass by quinclorac was influenced by plant growth stage. A three-parameter nonlinear regression was used to describe the influence of quinclorac concentration on each growth stage and to compare growth stages. A SAS® program for these comparisons is described. Pseudo R2 values for fit were above 0.98 for all tests. Flowering crabgrass plants had the highest GR50 value (50% growth reduction on a dry weight basis) whereas preemergence, three- to five-true-leaf, and two- to four-tiller stages were lower.

Canada thistle is a serious weed of many crop, rangeland, pasture, and natural areas throughout North America. Aminopyralid is a new pyridine carboxylic acid herbicide that has activity on Canada thistle at lower use rates than current standard treatments. The objectives of this study were to compare aminopyralid efficacy, rates, and application timing with several commercial standards for Canada thistle control. Studies were conducted across the Great Plains at ten locations, which encompassed a wide range of environments. Aminopyralid provided Canada thistle control comparable to picloram, picloram + 2,4-D amine, and clopyralid and better control than clopyralid + 2,4-D amine, dicamba, dicamba + 2,4-D amine and dicamba + diflufenzopyr. Canada thistle control was similar when aminopyralid was applied between 0.08 and 0.11 kg ai/ha and application timing (spring bolting vs. fall rosette/regrowth) did not strongly influence control 1 yr after treatment (YAT). Aminopyralid provided effective Canada thistle control at lower use rates than current commercial standards and might be useful in areas where herbicides such as picloram and clopyralid are not recommended for use.

Field experiments were conducted at four locations in Kansas in 1999 and 2000 to evaluate grain sorghum response to simulated drift rates of four herbicides. Imazethapyr, glufosinate, glyphosate, and sethoxydim were applied at 1/3, 1/10, 1/33, and 1/100 of the use rate when plants were 10 to 20 cm tall. Visible crop injury increased as rates of each herbicide increased. Glyphosate and imazethapyr caused the most injury and glufosinate the least. Data show that some plants that were significantly injured 2 wk after treatment (WAT) recovered 8 WAT. However, some plants that received the highest rate of imazethapyr or glyphosate died. Grain sorghum yields were reduced only when injury was severe. This research showed that the potential for sorghum injury from off-target herbicide drift is greater from imazethapyr and glyphosate than from sethoxydim or glufosinate.

Glyphosate-resistant (GR) volunteer corn is a significant problem weed in soybean grown in rotation with corn in the midwestern United States and eastern Canada. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of glufosinate applied in single or sequential applications compared with acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitors applied alone or tank mixed with glufosinate for controlling GR volunteer corn in glufosinate-resistant soybean. At 15 d after early-POST (DAEP), ACCase inhibitors applied alone controlled volunteer corn 76 to 93% compared to 71 to 82% control when tank mixed with glufosinate. The expected volunteer corn control achieved by tank mixing ACCase inhibitors and glufosinate was greater than the glufosinate alone, indicating that glufosinate antagonized ACCase inhibitors at 15 DAEP, but not at later rating dates. ACCase inhibitors applied alone or tank mixed with glufosinate followed by late-POST glufosinate application controlled volunteer corn and green foxtail ≥ 97% at 30 DAEP. Single early-POST application of glufosinate controlled common waterhemp and volunteer corn 53 to 78%, and green foxtail 72 to 93% at 15 DAEP. Single as well as sequential glufosinate applications controlled green foxtail and volunteer corn greater than or equal to 90%, and common waterhemp greater than 85% at 75 d after late-POST (DALP). Contrast analysis suggested that glufosinate applied sequentially provided greater control of volunteer corn at 15 and 75 DALP compared to a single application. Similar results were reflected in volunteer corn density and biomass at 75 DALP. Volunteer corn interference did not affect soybean yield, partly because of extreme weather conditions (hail and high winds) in both years of this study.

Experimental adjuvants were tested to maximize herbicidal activity of sethoxydim on quackgrass and of bentazon on common lambsquarters. Efficacious adjuvants were identified by measuring the 14C-herbicide droplet spread and absorption, as influenced by various adjuvants, on the target weed. The absorption and droplet spreadability of sethoxydim and bentazon on quackgrass and common lambsquarters leaves were increased or were decreased depending on the type of adjuvant used. No correlation was found between sethoxydim droplet spread and absorption on quackgrass. With bentazon, the relationship between these two factors was greater. Thus, measurement of droplet spread, as affected by adjuvants, was useful only as a screening technique for bentazon. Blending surfactants with paraffinic oil or soybean oil to form a crop oil concentrate changed the efficacy of the surfactant compared to the surfactant by itself. Surfactants most effective as components of paraffinic-oil based crop oil concentrate were different from surfactants ideal for inclusion with soybean oil-based crop oil concentrate. Thus, the effectiveness of a crop oil concentrate depends on herbicide, surfactant, and oil types. In the field, several of the superior adjuvants identified in the laboratory enhanced sethoxydim and bentazon activity on grass and broadleaf weeds.

Field experiments were conducted over 3 yr at three locations in Illinois to evaluate the efficacy of glyphosate in glyphosate-resistant soybean planted in rows spaced 19, 38, and 76 cm. Minimal soybean injury (less than 10%) was observed from any glyphosate treatment. Glyphosate treatments controlled 82 to 99% of giant foxtail. Common waterhemp control was increased as soybean row spacing was decreased. Applying sequential glyphosate applications or increasing the glyphosate rate from 420 g ae/ha to 840 g/ha frequently increased common waterhemp control in 76-cm rows. Velvetleaf control with glyphosate was variable, ranging from 48 to 99%. Decreasing soybean row spacing, utilizing sequential glyphosate applications, or increasing the glyphosate rate improved velvetleaf control in at least four of eight site-years. Glyphosate treatments generally resulted in weed control and soybean yield equal to or greater than the standard herbicide treatments. However, glyphosate treatments yielded less than the hand-weeded control in four of eight site-years, suggesting that weed control from glyphosate treatments was sometimes inadequate.
