A nonionic surfactant with the appropriate structure and concentration increased rimsulfuron activity 10-fold. Surfactants sharply increased rimsulfuron activity as concentration increased up to 0.05% (w/w) with slightly more enhancement up to 0.1% (w/w). Surfactants with a wide range of 14 chemical, physical, and surface properties were evaluated on giant foxtail, velvetleaf, and corn. Two properties, HLB (hydrophilic-lipophilic balance) and the physical form of the spray deposit, explained the biological variation. The most active surfactants had an HLB from 12 to 17 and formed a moist gel spray deposit on the leaf on all three species. A separate study with 13 chemically pure linear alcohol ethoxylates supported these conclusions and additionally showed that increasing molecular size increases activity. Because crop injury correlates with weed control, the best surfactant strategy is to maximize weed control at the lowest rimsulfuron rate.

Of 78 biotypes of wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum) collected from Western Australia (WA), 42% were resistant and 14% intermediate to acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides. Based on the LD50 and GR50 ratios, the resistant biotype K96071 was 81-fold more resistant to chlorsulfuron and 114- to 116-fold more resistant to metosulam than the susceptible biotype K96041. More resistant biotypes were found in northern zones than in southern zones of WA. Resistant biotypes evolved after five applications of chlorsulfuron in a predominantly cereal–lupin rotation. Where resistant biotypes were found, ALS-inhibiting herbicides were not rotated with herbicides with different modes of action as frequently as in fields with susceptible biotypes. Cross-resistance to chlorsulfuron and metosulam was found in the resistant biotypes even though only 15% of the 78 biotypes were exposed to two applications of metosulam over a 10-yr period. All 78 biotypes were effectively controlled by simazine and 2,4-D amine.

With the forthcoming release of the 2,4-D- and dicamba-resistance traits stacked with either glyphosate or glufosinate resistance, the use of 2,4-D or dicamba alone or in tank mix with glyphosate or glufosinate likely will increase the control of glyphosate-resistant weeds in soybean. There also is an increasing trend among soybean growers to apply POST herbicides in combination with fungicides, insecticides, and fertilizers to reduce trips over the field. Greenhouse experiments were conducted during 2011 and 2012 to evaluate glyphosate or glufosinate applications with growth regulator herbicides and other agrochemicals for the control of glyphosate-resistant horseweed and glyphosate-resistant common lambsquarters. In most cases, glyphosate or glufosinate application with 2,4-D or dicamba provided 80% or more control of glyphosate-resistant horseweed and glyphosate-resistant common lambsquarters. These studies demonstrate that performance of glufosinate alone and with agrochemicals was poor on glyphosate-resistant common lambsquarters. However, no differences in glyphosate-resistant common lambsquarters biomass were noted among treatments including glufosinate alone, glufosinate plus growth regulator herbicides, and glufosinate plus growth regulator herbicides plus agrochemicals. The agrochemicals lambda-cyhalothrin, manganese, and pyraclostrobin did not affect weed control by glyphosate or glufosinate combinations with growth regulator herbicides. Visible soybean injury was noted at 1 wk after treatment (WAT) only when glufosinate was applied with lambda-cyhalothrin or pyraclostrobin but no differences in visible injury were seen with these combinations at 3 WAT.

Weed resistance monitoring has been routinely conducted in the Northern Great Plains of Canada (Prairies) since the mid-1990s. Most recently, random surveys were conducted in Alberta in 2001, Manitoba in 2002, and Saskatchewan in 2003 totaling nearly 800 fields. In addition, nearly 1,300 weed seed samples were submitted by growers across the Prairies between 1996 and 2006 for resistance testing. Collected or submitted samples were screened for group 1 [acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitor] and/or group 2 [acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitor] resistance. Twenty percent of 565 sampled fields had an herbicide-resistant (HR) wild oat biotype. Most populations exhibited broad cross-resistance across various classes of group 1 or group 2 herbicides. In Manitoba, 22% of 59 fields had group 1–HR green foxtail. Group 2–HR biotypes of kochia were documented in Saskatchewan, common chickweed and spiny sowthistle in Alberta, and green foxtail and redroot pigweed in Manitoba. Across the Prairies, HR weeds are estimated to occur in fields covering an area of nearly 5 million ha. Of 1,067 wild oat seed samples submitted by growers and industry for testing between 1996 and 2006, 725 were group 1 HR, 34 group 2 HR, and 55 groups 1 and 2 HR. Of 80 submitted green foxtail samples, 26 were confirmed group 1 HR; most populations originated from southern Manitoba where the weed is most abundant. Similar to the field surveys, various group 2–HR biotypes were confirmed among submitted samples: kochia, wild mustard, field pennycress, Galium spp., common chickweed, and common hempnettle. Information from grower questionnaires indicates patterns of herbicide usage are related to location, changing with cropping system. Two herbicide modes of action most prone to select resistance, groups 1 and 2, continue to be widely and repeatedly used. There is little evidence that growers are aware of the level of resistance within their fields, but a majority have adopted herbicide rotations to proactively or reactively manage HR weeds.

Weed science has a long history of solving weed management problems for farmers. Over the last four decades most of the solutions to weed problems have been based on herbicide technology. Thus, most crop production systems in the United States rely heavily on herbicides as the primary method of weed management. During the last decade environmentalists, farmers, agricultural scientists, policy makers, and the general public have begun to question the long-term sustainability of conventional farming systems. The sustainability of these systems is being questioned because of environmental, social, and economic concerns caused by global competition, cost of production, soil erosion, water pollution, and concern over the quality of rural life. Weeds are the major deterrent to the development of more sustainable agriculture systems. Since weeds dictate most of the crop production practices (e.g., tillage, herbicides, cultivation, row spacing) weed scientists must become the leaders of collaborative integrated approaches to agriculture systems research. New crop production systems must be developed that are less destructive to the environment, are profitable, conserve energy, and support rural community development. The goal is to facilitate the development of ecologically based alternative methods of weed management that will support crop production systems that require less tillage and herbicide inputs. To accomplish this goal, research efforts must be radically expanded in weed/crop ecology and in the development of ecologically based technologies for weed management.

Although the impact of Canada thistle (CT) on annual crop production is relatively well established, few investigations report on this weed's impact within perennial pastures. This field study assessed herbage yield losses within eight central Alberta pastures from 1999 to 2001. Each pasture was sampled in 1999 to quantify thistle and herbage biomass within 25 permanent plots. CT was controlled in 2000 and the response of vegetation measured in 2000 and 2001. Before removal, significant negative relationships (P < 0.05) between thistle abundance and herbage were noted at six sites. After thistle removal, herbage at several sites displayed positive responses. Both thistle density and biomass adequately predicted herbage yield loss. Yield losses due to CT can be substantial, peaking at 2 kg/ha for each kilogram of standing thistle biomass and 4.3 kg/ha with each additional thistle stem per square meter. Demonstrated yield losses were variable among sites however, likely due to factors such as heterogeneity in soils, available moisture, and variation in disturbance history or pasture vegetation composition. CT management in perennial pastures of western Canada may enhance pasture production, but further research is required to reliably predict the ability of pastures to respond.

Wild oat and green foxtail are the two most abundant weeds and the most economically important herbicide-resistant grass weeds in the northern Great Plains of western Canada. Farmers in this region rarely proactively manage these weed species to prevent or delay the selection for herbicide resistance; they usually increase the adoption of integrated weed management practices only after intergroup herbicide resistance has evolved. The effectiveness of herbicide and nonherbicide practices to proactively or reactively manage herbicide-resistant wild oat and green foxtail are described, based on a decade of field trials, field-scale experiments, and field surveys in western Canada. Nonherbicide weed management practices or nonselective herbicides applied preplant or in crop, integrated with less frequent selective herbicide use in diversified cropping systems, have mitigated the evolution, spread, and economic impact of herbicide-resistant wild oat and green foxtail.

Weed management is often difficult and expensive in organic production systems. Clove oil is an essential oil that functions as a contact herbicide and may provide an additional weed management tool for use on organic farms. Burning nettle, purslane, and rye responses to 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80% v/v clove oil mixture applied in spray volumes of 281 and 468 L/ha were examined. Log-logistic curves were fitted to the nettle and purslane data to determine the herbicide dose required to reduce plant dry weight 50% (GR50) and 90% (GR90). A three-parameter Gaussian curve was fitted to the rye data. The GR50 and GR90 were largely unaffected by spray volume. Nettle dry weight was reduced by 90% with 12 to 61 L clove oil/ha, whereas 21 to 38 L clove oil/ha were required to reduce purslane biomass to the same level. Rye was not effectively controlled by clove oil. Clove oil controls broadleaf weeds at high concentrations, but its cost makes broadcast applications prohibitive, even in high-value vegetable production systems.

Studies were conducted from 2001 through 2003 to determine the extent of resistance to acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors and glyphosate in Ohio horseweed biotypes. The response of 66 horseweed biotypes to cloransulam-methyl and glyphosate was determined in the greenhouse. Application of 0.07 kg ai cloransulam/ha reduced plant biomass by less than 60% for 38 of the 66 biotypes. Application of 3.4 kg ae glyphosate/ha reduced biomass by at least 80% for the 51 biotypes collected in 2001, but biomass was similar to that of nontreated plants for 11 of the 15 populations collected in 2002. A dose–response study was conducted with selected biotypes, and a nonlinear, logistic dose–response curve was fit to the data to calculate the herbicide dose required to reduce fresh weight 50% (GR50). On the basis of GR50 values, the resistance ratio (R/S) for two ALS-resistant biotypes was 34 and 943 for chlorimuron-ethyl and 32 and 168 for cloransulam, respectively. The R/S ratio for two glyphosate-resistant biotypes was 33 and 39. Results of these studies indicate that, in 2002, ALS-resistant horseweed was widespread throughout Ohio, whereas resistance to glyphosate occurred primarily in several counties in southwestern Ohio.

A screening procedure to minimize adverse water quality impacts of pesticide application is presented that matches pesticide parameters to site-specific soil ratings. The pesticide parameters include a Relative Leaching Potential Index (RLPI), a Relative Runoff Potential Index (RRPI), the U.S. Environ. Prot. Agency (USEPA) lifetime health advisory level (HAL), and aquatic toxicity (LC50). Criteria used in developing soil ratings are described. Pesticide selection is accomplished by matching pesticide parameters values for the array of pesticides that control the pest of interest to soil ratings at the application site using selection criteria. A worksheet is presented to facilitate organization of information for the selection procedure and to serve as a record of the pesticide applicator's decision. The linking of an environmental fate model to a geographic information system (GIS) to create thematic maps of pesticide leaching potentials in terms of probability of exceeding the HAL in groundwater is described. A cost vs. groundwater hazard index frontier is described that suggests a method to assess the economic consequences of alternative pesticide selections.

The weed control spectrum of clomazone, the influence of clomazone on the performance of other herbicides, and the performance of tank mixtures containing clomazone were evaluated from 1985 through 1987. Clomazone applied preemergence at 280 g ai/ha controlled 90 to 100% of barnyardgrass, giant foxtail, goosegrass, large crabgrass, seedling johnsongrass, prickly sida, and velvetleaf. Clomazone at reduced rates was more effective applied preemergence than preplant-incorporated for 10 of 23 weed species. Clomazone enhanced imazaquin activity on entireleaf morningglory and sicklepod in 1986. A tank mixture of clomazone, imazaquin, and metribuzin at half the labeled rates reduced soybean injury, increased soybean yield, and controlled weeds as well as the mixture at labeled rates.

The objective of this study was to determine whether a junglerice population from the tropical Ord River region of northwest Australia was glyphosate resistant, and whether alternative herbicides labeled for junglerice control were still effective. Seed samples collected from the field site were initially screened with glyphosate in the glasshouse, and surviving individuals were self-pollinated for subsequent glyphosate dose-response studies. Glyphosate resistance was confirmed, as the suspected resistant population was found to be 8.6-fold more resistant to glyphosate than a susceptible population based on survival (LD50 of 3.72 kg ha−1), and 5.6-fold more resistant based on biomass reduction (GR50 of 1.16 kg ha−1). The glyphosate-resistant population was susceptible to label-recommended doses of all other herbicides assessed, including three acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) –inhibiting herbicides (fluazifop-P, haloxyfop, and sethoxydim), two acetolactate synthase (ALS) –inhibiting herbicides (imazamox and sulfometuron), paraquat, and glufosinate. Glyphosate resistance has previously evolved in numerous species found in glyphosate-resistant cropping systems, no-till chemical fallow, fence line, and perennial crop situations. Here we report the evolution of glyphosate resistance in a cropping system that included annual tillage. The evolution of glyphosate resistance in junglerice from a tropical cropping system further demonstrates the need for improved glyphosate stewardship practices globally.

Field experiments were conducted near DeKalb and Urbana, IL, and Columbia, MO, in 1997 and 1998 to evaluate weed management systems in glyphosate- and glufosinate-resistant soybean planted in 18-cm rows. Overall weed control was improved to a greater extent when the rate of glufosinate was increased from 300 to 400 g ai/ha than when the rate of glyphosate increased from 630 to 840 g ae/ha. Sequential applications of glufosinate improved control over single applications, whereas sequential treatments of glyphosate generally provided no advantages over single applications. When averaged across all weed species in these trials, the systems that provided 95% or higher average control were sequential applications of glufosinate, sequential applications of glyphosate, and clomazone followed by (fb) glyphosate. Single applications of glufosinate provided somewhat variable control of giant foxtail, common lambsquarters, ragweed, and common cocklebur similar to that observed with pendimethalin fb imazethapyr. The addition of fomesafen to glufosinate did not improve control of any of the weeds in this study with the exception of velvetleaf at DeKalb. The addition of clomazone to glufosinate treatments resulted in slightly better giant foxtail and velvetleaf control. Single applications of glyphosate provided somewhat variable control of giant ragweed at DeKalb in 1997 and ivyleaf morningglory and common cocklebur control at Columbia. The addition of fomesafen to glyphosate provided an increase in ivyleaf morningglory and common cocklebur control at Columbia but did not improve control of any other species. The addition of clomazone to glyphosate-based programs resulted in slightly higher velvetleaf, common cocklebur, and ivyleaf morningglory control. In the glyphosate-based herbicide programs there were no substantial differences in relative yield, with all programs protecting over 95% of soybean yield. Glufosinate-based programs were effective in protecting 85 to 92% of soybean yield.

Sulfentrazone dissipation in soil was examined in field experiments in 1995, 1996, and 1997 at Knoxville, TN, on a Sequatchie loam soil. Sulfentrazone 50% disappearance time (DT50) varied from 24 to 113 d. Cotton injury was observed the year following sulfentrazone application when half-lives were ≥85 d. Sulfentrazone degradation under controlled laboratory conditions was slower in autoclaved soil than in nonautoclaved surface soil and subsurface soil, with DT50 of 198, 93, and 102 d, respectively. The difference due to autoclaving the soil implied that sulfentrazone degradation was influenced by both microbial and chemical mechanisms.

Flaming can be an effective nonselective, nonchemical method of weed control. It has been more effective against broadleaf weeds than grasses. Experiments were conducted with a conveyor bench burner apparatus to evaluate flaming to kill broadleaf and grass seedlings at the 0- to 2- and 2- to 4-leaf stages. Most 0- to 2-leaf green foxtail seedlings were killed when flamed at 2, 4, and 6 km/h conveyor speed. A few plants survived when flamed at 8 km/h. Green foxtail seedlings at the 2- to 4-leaf stage were more tolerant to flaming than 0- to 2-leaf green foxtail, and substantial numbers of plants survived at all flaming speeds except 2 km/h. Barnyardgrass was more tolerant to flaming than green foxtail, and many 0- to 2- and 2- to 4-leaf seedlings survived after flaming. However, fresh weight of the live plants at 14 d after treatment was reduced. Some large crabgrass plants survived flaming at both growth stages. Flaming at 2 km/h reduced seedling number and fresh weight, but there was significant regrowth. Common ragweed was more susceptible to flaming at the 2- to 4-leaf stage than at the 0- to 2-leaf stage. Redroot pigweed and common lambsquarters were susceptible to flaming at both 0- to 2- and 2- to 4-leaf stages.

A 3-yr study was conducted in Wheatland County, Alberta to determine if agronomic practices of growers influenced the occurrence of herbicide resistance in wild oat. Wild oat seeds were collected in 33 fields in 1997 and in 31 fields in each of 1998 and 1999 (one field per grower). Seedlings were screened for resistance to two acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitors, imazamethabenz, an acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitor, and triallate, a thiocarbamate herbicide. A questionnaire on herbicide resistance awareness and management practices was completed by each grower. Both ACCase and ALS inhibitor resistance in wild oat were linked to a lack of crop rotation diversity. In addition, ALS inhibitor–resistant wild oat was associated with conservation-tillage systems and recent use of herbicides with that mode of action. Results of this study suggest that timely tillage and inclusion of fall-seeded and perennial forage crops in rotations will effectively slow the selection of resistance in this grass species.

The effect of seeding depth on emergence of red rice (Oryza sativa) ecotypes from Arkansas (AR), Louisiana (LA), and Mississippi (MS) was determined under dry-seeded rice production in clay and silt loam soils in Arkansas. By 21 d after planting (DAP), all red rice ecotypes had emerged from planting depths of 1.3, 2.5, 5.0, and 7.5 cm in both clay and silt loam soils. In silt loam soil, seedling emergence from 2.5 cm 7 DAP tended to be greater than from 1.3 cm in an early (normal temperature) planting. Also in this situation, the LA ecotype emerged more vigorously than the other ecotypes at all seeding depths and emerged from 7.5 cm at levels 1.5 times those of the other ecotypes at the same depth. In the clay soil, seedling emergence from 7.5 cm at 21 DAP was greater for the LA and MS ecotypes than for the AR ecotype in an early planting, but these differences were not observed for a late (elevated temperature) planting. Seedling emergence was earlier and greater in silt loam than in clay. The LA ecotype generally produced the greatest aboveground dry matter, especially at the early planting. The MS ecotype averaged 30% less dry matter production than the AR ecotype for the late planting in both soils. The ability of the LA and MS ecotypes to emerge from greater depths than the AR ecotype under certain soil and temperature conditions suggests that they could be more difficult to control with cultural practices used in dry-seeded rice culture.

Additive series studies were conducted under greenhouse conditions to determine the effects of nitrogen (N) rate and purple nutsedge densities on the yield of ‘California Wonder’ bell pepper. Initial densities of purple nutsedge were 0, 100, 200, and 300 plants/m2. Nitrogen was applied at 70, 140, and 210 kg/ha. Plants were allowed to interfere for 10 wk. There were significant purple nutsedge population density by N rate interactions on bell pepper fruit yield. At 70 kg N/ha, no significant effect of weed population densities was found on fruit yield, whereas at the rates of 140 and 210 kg N/ha there were significant nutsedge density effects. As N rates and nutsedge densities increased, so did purple nutsedge biomass. Linear regression models described the interference. Bell pepper fruit yield reduction was 73% at 210 kg N/ha with an initial nutsedge population density of 300 plants/m2.

Six experiments were conducted in 2018 on field sites located in Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Ontario, and Wisconsin to evaluate the off-target movement (OTM) of dicamba under field-scale conditions. The highest estimated percentages of dicamba injury in non–dicamba-resistant (DR) soybean were 55%, 44%, 39%, 67%, 15%, and 44% injury for noncovered areas and 55%, 5%, 13%, 42%, 0%, and 41% injury for covered areas during dicamba application in Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Ontario, and Wisconsin, respectively. The level of injury generally decreased as the downwind distance increased under covered and noncovered areas at all sites. There was an estimated 10% injury in non-DR soybean at 113, 8, 11, 8, and 8 m; and estimated 1% injury at 293, 28, 71, 15, and 19 m from the edge of treated fields downwind when plants were not covered during dicamba application in Arkansas, Indiana, Michigan, Ontario, and Wisconsin, respectively. Assessment of filter-paper collectors placed from 4 to 137 m downwind from the edge of the sprayed area suggested the dicamba deposition reduced exponentially with distance. The greatest injury to non-DR soybean from dicamba OTM occurred at Nebraska and Arkansas (as far as 250 m). Non-DR soybean injury was greatest adjacent to the dicamba sprayed area, but injury decreased with no injury beyond 20 m downwind or in any other direction from the dicamba sprayed area in Indiana, Michigan, Ontario, and Wisconsin. The presence of soybean injury under covered and noncovered areas during the spray period for primary drift suggests that secondary movement of dicamba was evident at five sites. Additional research is needed to determine the exact forms of secondary movement of dicamba under different environmental conditions.

Greenhouse experiments were established to investigate the effects of tank-mixing glyphosate, paraquat, or glufosinate with metribuzin plus chlorimuron, imazaquin, or metribuzin on entireleaf morningglory, sicklepod, and johnsongrass control. Antagonism was the most frequent interaction, and usually occurred when the lower rates of non-selective foliar-active herbicides were used in tank mixtures with selective soil-active herbicides. Antagonism occurred on all species when 180 g ai/ha paraquat was tank-mixed with 90 g ai/ha metribuzin plus 15 g ai/ha chlorimuron. When the rates of non-selective herbicide were increased, antagonism was usually overcome. Antagonism also occurred on entireleaf morningglory control when 210 g ai/ha glyphosate was tank-mixed with 90 g/ha metribuzin plus 15 g/ha chlorimuron or 36 g ai/ha imazaquin. When lower rates of paraquat or glufosinate were tank-mixed with 210 g/ha metribuzin, antagonism also occurred. Less antagonism was noted with glufosinate.
