Led by the CNES space agency the CoRoT mission is born from a joint effort of France, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Germany, Spain and ESA. In orbit around the Earth, CoRoT started its first observations in February 2007 and is, now, regularly producing ten thousand light-curves with a very high accuracy. Performances are better than expected and some Hot Jupiters have already been detected in the raw data. Once the fully corrected data will be delivered, much smaller transits should be detected giving access to the hot Neptunes and the big Terrestrial planet families. We briefly describes the status of the mission, the inflight performance and the ground based program follow up strategy. We also present some preliminary results issued from a first analysis of the data.

The Kepler Mission is a space-based mission whose primary goal is to detect Earth-size and smaller planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. The mission will monitor more than 100,000 stars for transits with a differential photometric precision of 20 ppm at V=12 for a 6.5 hour transit. It will also provide asteroseismic results on several thousand dwarf stars. It is specifically designed to continuously observe a single field of view of greater than 100 square degrees for 3.5 or more years.

This overview describes the mission design, its goals and capabilities, the measured performance for those photometer components that have now been tested, the Kepler Input Catalog, an overview of the analysis pipeline, the plans for the Follow-up Observing Program to validate the detections and characterize the parent stars, and finally, the plans for the Guest Observer and Astrophysical Data Program.

Microlensing light curves due to single stars are symmetric and typically last for a month. So far about 4000 microlensing events have been discovered in real-time, the vast majority toward the Galactic centre. The presence of planets around the primary lenses induces deviations in the usual light curve which lasts from hours (for an Earth-mass [M⊕] planet) to days (for a Jupiter-mass [Mj] planet). Currently the survey teams, OGLE and MOA, discover and announce microlensing events in real-time, and follow-up teams (together with the survey teams) monitor selected events intensively (usually with high magnification) in order to identify anomalies caused by planets. So far four extrasolar planets have been discovered using the microlensing technique, with half a dozen new planet candidates identified in 2007 (yet to be published). Future possibilities include a network of wide-field 2m-class telescopes from the ground (which can combine survey and follow-up in the same setup) and a 1m-class survey telescope from space.

Microlensing has proven to be a valuable tool to search for extrasolar planets of Jovian- to Super-Earth-mass planets at orbits of a few AU. Since planetary signals are of very short duration, an intense and continuous monitoring is required. This is achieved by ground-based networks of telescopes (PLANET/RoboNET, μFUN) following up targets, which are identified as microlensing events by single dedicated telescopes (OGLE, MOA). Microlensing has led to four already published detections of extrasolar planets, one of them being OGLE 2005-BLG-390Lb, a planet of only ∼5.5 M⊕ orbiting its M-dwarf host star at ∼2.6 AU. Very recent observations (May–September 2007) provided four more planetary candidates, still under study, that will double the number of detections. For non-planetary microlensing events observed from 1995 to 2006 we compute detection efficiency diagrams, which can then be used to derive an estimate of the Galactic abundance of cool planets in the mass regime from Jupiters to Sub-Neptunes.

Gravitational microlensing observations will lead to a census of planets that orbit stars of different populations. From 2008, ARTEMiS will provide an expert system that allows to adopt a three-step strategy of survey, follow-up and anomaly monitoring of gravitational microlensing events that is capable of detecting planets of Earth mass and below. The SIGNALMEN anomaly detector, an integral part, has already demonstrated its performance during a pilot season. Embedded into eSTAR, ARTEMiS serves as an open platform that links with existing microlensing campaigns. Real-time visualization of ongoing events along with an interpretation moreover allows to communicate “Science live to your home” to the general public.

We present our ongoing survey of ∼1000 GK-giants with the 9.2-m Hobby-Eberly Telescope in search for planets around evolved stars. The stars selected for this survey are brighter than 11 mag and are located in the section of the HR-diagram, which is approximately delimited by the main sequence, the instability strip, and the coronal dividing line. We use the High Resolution Spectrograph to obtain stellar spectra for radial velocity measurements with a 4-6 m s−1 precision. So far, the survey has discovered a planetary-mass companion to the K0-giant HD 17092, and it has produced a number of plausible planet candidates around other stars. Together with other similar efforts, our program provides information on planet formation around intermediate mass main sequence-progenitors and it will create the experimental basis with which to study dynamics of planetary systems around evolving stars.

The main objective of the Penn State/Toruń Centre for Astronomy search for planets around evolved stars is the detection of planetary systems around massive, evolved stars. We are also interested in the evolution of these systems on stellar evolution timescales. In this paper we present our approach to determine the basic physical parameters of our targets GK-giants. We also discuss the stellar activity indicators used in our survey: line bisector and curvature, and Hα variability.

Since 2005, we have been carrying out a precise radial velocity survey of about 190 intermediate-mass (1.5-5 M⊙) G and K giants at Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory (BOAO) in Korea and Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO) in Japan, which aims to reveal statistical properties of planetary systems around intermediate-mass stars. We have finished the first screening of 120 stars so far and have identified 5 candidates with large periodic radial velocity variations. One of the candidates turned out to be orbited by a brown dwarf mass companion with minimum mass of 37.6 MJup and semimajor axis of 1.71 AU. The primary star has a mass of 3.9 M⊙, which ranks among the most massive stars with substellar companions. Our discovery may support the current view obtained from results of planet searches around intermediate-mass stars that massive substellar companions tend to form around massive stars.

We present our search program for substellar companions using high-precision relative astronomy. Due to its orbital motion around the star, an unseen substellar companion would produce a periodic “wobble” of the host star, which is the astrometric signal of the unseen companion. By measuring the separation between the components of stellar double and triple systems, we want to measure this astrometric signal of a possible unseen companion indirectly as a relative and periodic change of these separations. Using a new observation mode (the “cube-mode”) where the frames were directly saved in cubes with nearly no loss of time during the readout, an adaptive optics system to correct for atmospheric noise and an infrared narrow band filter in the near infrared to suppress differential chromatic refraction (DCR) effects we achieve for our first target (the double star HD 19994) a relative precision for the separation measurements of about 100. . . 150μas per epoch. To reach a precision in the μas-regime, we use a statistical approach. We take several thousand frames per target and epoche and after a verification of a Gaussian distribution the measurement precision can be calculated as the standard deviation of our measurements divided by the square root of the number of Gaussian distributed measurements. Our first observed target is the stellar binary HD 19994 A & B, where the A component has a known radial velocity planet candidate.

The PRIMA (Phase-Referenced Imaging and Micro-arcsecond Astrometry) facility at ESO VLTI (Paranal observatory) is expected to be commissioned in mid 2008. The ESPRI (Exoplanet Search with PRIMA) consortium is currently preparing an astrometric survey to search for extrasolar planets. To achieve the scientific goal of this survey, a careful selection of target and reference stars is necessary. Apart from catalog search and modelling, extensive and dedicated preparatory observations are indispensable. Here we present two aspects of the preparatory observation programs: A high dynamic range near infrared (NIR) imaging survey to search for astrometric reference stars around the preselected target stars and characterization of the target stars by using high-resolution spectroscopy.

We have searched for close and faint companions around T Tauri stars in the Chamaeleon star forming region. Two epochs of direct imaging data were taken with the VLT Adaptive Optics instrument NaCo in February 2006 and March 2007 in Ks band for the classical T Tauri star CT Cha together with a Hipparcos binary for astrometric calibration. Moreover a J band image was taken in March 2007 to get color information. We found CT Cha to have a very faint companion (Ks0=14.6 mag) of ∼2.67” separation corresponding to ∼440AU. We show that CT Cha A and the faint object form a common proper motion pair and that the companion is not a non-moving background object (with 4σ significance).

Precision closure phase measurements obtained with ground-based long baseline optical interferometers is a promising way to directly detect light from nearby hot Jupiters. Here we present our closure phase simulations for the CHARA array for several bright hot Jupiters, υ And b, 51 Peg b, and τ Boo b. The maximum possible closure phase signals from these hot Jupiters are very small, for example, only ∼0.17 degrees for υ And b, requiring very high precision and stable closure phase measurements. We present preliminary results of a closure phase study on test object β Tau and hot Jupiter system υ And, both obtained with the MIRC instrument at the CHARA array. We demonstrate that directly detecting the light from hot Jupiters is feasible using high precision closure phase measurements obtained by CHARA-MIRC along with its sub-milli-arcsecond resolution, although challenges remain.

We present the first observation of planet-induced stellar X-ray activity, identified for the HD 179949 system, using Chandra / ACIS-S. The HD 179949 system consists of a close-in giant planet orbiting an F9 V star. Previous ground-based observations already showed enhancements in Ca II K in phase with the planetary orbit. We find an ∼30% increase in the X-ray flux over quiescent levels coincident with the phase of the Ca II enhancements. There is also a trend for the emission to be hotter at increased fluxes, confirmed by modeling, showing the enhancement at ∼1 keV compared to ∼0.4 keV for the background star.

Three SuperWASP transiting planet candidates were observed through R or I filters using the 1-meter telescope and CCD camera of Yunnan Observatory from 2006 to 2007. The relative photometric data were corrected for the systematic errors by means of Tamuz et al. (2005) and Collier Cameron et al. (2006)'s algorithms. The resulting light curves demonstrate that one of three targets is a potential exoplanet candidate, which is worthy to perform further follow-up observation to clarify.

The extra-solar planet WASP-1b, discovered by SuperWASP consortium in 2006, was observed through R filter using the 1-meter telescope with CCD camera at Yunnan Observatory on November 11, 2006. The systematic errors in photometric data were reduced by means of Tamuz et al. (2005) and Collier Cameron et al. (2006)'s algorithms. In order to estimate the parameters of the system, the MCMC (Markov Chain Monte Carlo) analysis is applied to fit the observed light curve. The following parameters of the system are derived: Rp=1.44RJ, Mp=0.88MJ, R*=1.52R⊙, a=0.0396AU. The new parameters of the planet imply its low density, which agrees to the previous results.

Intrinsic stellar variability can hinder the detection of shallow transits, particularly in space-based data. Therefore, this variability has to be filtered out before running the transit search. Unfortunately, filtering out the low frequency signal of the stellar variability also modifies the transit shape. This results in errors in the measured transit depth and duration used to derive the planet radius, and orbital inclination. We present an evaluation of the magnitude of this effect based on 20 simulated light curves from the CoRoT blind exercise 2 (BT2). We then present an iterative filter which uses the strictly periodic nature of the transits to separate them from other forms of variability, so as to recover the original transit shape before deriving the planet parameters. On average with this filter, we improve the estimation of the transit depth and duration by 15% and 10% respectively.

Window functions describe, as a function of orbital period, the probability that an existing planetary transit is detectable in one's data for a given observing strategy. We show the dependence of this probability upon several strategy and astrophysical parameters, such as length of observing run, observing cadence, length of night, and transit duration. The ability to detect a transit is directly related to the intrinsic noise of the observations. In our simulations of the window function, we explicitly address non-correlated (white) noise and correlated (red) noise and discuss how these two different noise components affect window functions in different manners.

Existing algorithms of analysis of radial velocity time series are improved for the purposes of extrasolar planets detection and characterizing. Three important effects are considered: the poorly known radial velocity jitter, periodic systematic errors, and statistical bias due to non-linearity of models. Mathematical tools to account for these effects are developed and applied to a number of real planetary systems. In particular, it is shown that two outer planets of HD37124 are likely trapped in the 2/1 resonance. The dwarf star GJ876 may host an extra, Neptune-mass, planet which is in resonance with two giant planets in this system.

The majority of extra-solar planets have been discovered by measuring the Doppler velocities of the host star. Like all exoplanet detection methods, the Doppler method is rife with observational biases. Before any robust comparison of mass, orbital period and eccentricity distributions can be made with theory, a detailed understanding of these selection effects is required, something which up to now is lacking. We present here a progress report on our analysis of the selection effects present in Anglo-Australian Planet Search data, including the methodology used and some preliminary results.

To achieve maximum planet yield for a given radial velocity survey, the observing strategy must be carefully considered. In particular, the adopted cadence can greatly affect the sensitivity to exoplanetary parameters such as period and eccentricity. Here we describe simulations which aim to maximise detections based upon the target parameter space of the survey.
