High-temperature X-ray diffraction with concurrent gas chromatography (GC) was used to study cobalt disulfide cathode pellets disassembled from thermal batteries. When CoS2 cathode materials were analyzed in an air environment, oxidation of the K(Br, Cl) salt phase in the cathode led to the formation of K2SO4 that subsequently reacted with the pyrite-type CoS2 phase leading to cathode decomposition between ~260 and 450 °C. Independent thermal analysis experiments, i.e. simultaneous thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry/mass spectrometry (MS), augmented the diffraction results and support the overall picture of CoS2 decomposition. Both gas analysis measurements (i.e. GC and MS) from the independent experiments confirmed the formation of SO2 off-gas species during breakdown of the CoS2. In contrast, characterization of the same cathode material under inert conditions showed the presence of CoS2 throughout the entire temperature range of analysis.

The crystal structure of rivastigmine hydrogen tartrate has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Rivastigmine hydrogen tartrate crystallizes in space group P21 (#4) with a = 17.538 34(5), b = 8.326 89(2), c = 7.261 11(2) Å, β = 98.7999(2)°, V = 1047.929(4) Å3, and Z = 2. The un-ionized end of the hydrogen tartrate anions forms a very strong hydrogen bond with the ionized end of another anion to form a chain. The ammonium group of the rivastigmine cation forms a strong discrete hydrogen bond with the carbonyl oxygen atom of the un-ionized end of the tartrate anion. These hydrogen bonds form a corrugated network in the bc-plane. Both hydroxyl groups of the tartrate anion form intramolecular O–H⋯O hydrogen bonds. Several C–H⋯O hydrogen bonds appear to contribute to the crystal energy. The powder pattern is included in the Powder Diffraction File™ as entry 00-064-1501.

Many technological applications of austenitic shape memory alloys (SMAs) involve cyclical mechanical loading and unloading in order to take advantage of pseudoelasticity. In this paper, we investigated the effect of mechanical bending of pseudoelastic NiTi SMA wires using high-energy synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction (SR-XRD). Differential scanning calorimetry was performed to identify the phase transformation temperatures. Scanning electron microscopy images show that micro-cracks in compressive regions of the wire propagate with increasing bend angle, while tensile regions tend not to exhibit crack propagation. SR-XRD patterns were analyzed to study the phase transformation and investigate micromechanical properties. By observing the various diffraction peaks such as the austenite (200) and the martensite ( ${\bar 1}12$ ), ( ${\bar 1}03$ ), ( ${\bar 1}11$ ), and (101) planes, intensities and residual strain values exhibit strong anisotropy, depending upon whether the sample is in compression or tension during bending.

Subsolidus phase equilibrium of Na2O–Sm2O3–B2O3 system has been investigated mainly by solid-state reaction and powder X-ray diffraction method. There are nine definite three-phase regions and three ternary compounds determined under present experimental conditions. A novel compound Na3SmB2O6 was found and confirmed in this system, along with its two homogeneous compounds Na3REB2O6 (RE = Pr, Eu) synthesized for the first time. The indexing results showed that all three compounds crystallize in the monoclinic space group P21/c (No.14) with the same structure type as both Na3NdB2O6 and Na3GdB2O6. The lattice parameters (a, b, and c) of new borates Na3REB2O6 (RE = Pr, Sm, Eu) decrease linearly with a decreasing radius of RE ion, which obeys the Lanthanide-contraction rule. The existence of a trigonal BO3 group in the Na3REB2O6 (RE = Pr, Sm) compounds was confirmed by analysis of their infrared absorption spectra. Thermal stabilities of the three new borates have been investigated.

The crystal structure of mupirocin Form I has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Mupirocin Form I crystallizes in space group P21 (#4) with a = 12.562 81(16), b = 5.103 63(4), c = 21.713 34(29) Å, β = 100.932(1)°, V = 1366.91(2) Å3, and Z = 2. Although the three hydroxyl groups and the carboxylic acid participate in a three-dimensional hydrogen bond network, the crystal energy appears to be dominated by van der Waals interactions. The Rietveld-refined and density functional optimized structures differ significantly. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™.

Ion-exchanged Aurivillius materials form perovskite nanosheet booklets wherein well-defined bi-periodic sheets, with ~11.5 Å thickness, exhibit extensive stacking disorder. The perovskite layer contents were defined initially using combined synchrotron X-ray and neutron Rietveld refinement of the parent Aurivillius structure. The structure of the subsequently ion-exchanged material, which is disordered in its stacking sequence, is analyzed using both pair distribution function (PDF) analysis and recursive method simulations of the scattered intensity. Combined X-ray and neutron PDF refinement of supercell stacking models demonstrates sensitivity of the PDF to both perpendicular and transverse stacking vector components. Further, hierarchical ensembles of stacking models weighted by a standard normal distribution are demonstrated to improve PDF fit over 1–25 Å. Recursive method simulations of the X-ray scattering profile demonstrate agreement between the real space stacking analysis and more conventional reciprocal space methods. The local structure of the perovskite sheet is demonstrated to relax only slightly from the Aurivillius structure after ion exchange.

The crystal structure of paliperidone has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Paliperidone crystallizes in space group P21/n (# 14) with a = 14.151 58(6), b = 21.537 80(9), c = 6.913 26(2) Å, β = 92.3176(2)°, V = 2105.396(13) Å3, and Z = 4. The unit-cell volume at 295 K is 1.5% larger than at 200 K, but the expansion is anisotropic; the b-axis is nearly constant at the two temperatures, while the a- and c-axes expand by 0.71 and 0.87%, respectively. There is only one significant hydrogen (H)-bond in the crystal structure. This H-bond is between the hydroxyl group O31–H58 and the ketone oxygen O25. The result is a chain along the c-axis with graph set C1,1(7). In addition to this H-bond, the molecular packing is dominated by van der Waals attractions. The crystal structure of choline fenofibrate has been solved and refined using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data, and optimized using density functional techniques. Choline fenofibrate crystallizes in space group Pbca (#61) with a = 12.341 03(2), b = 28.568 70(6), c = 12.025 62(2) Å, V = 4239.84(1) Å3, and Z = 8. The hydroxyl group of the choline anion makes a strong hydrogen bond to the ionized carboxylate group of the fenofibrate anion. Together with C–H···O hydrogen bonds, these link the cations and anions into layers parallel to the ac-plane. The powder pattern has been submitted to ICDD for inclusion in the Powder Diffraction File™.

The α-aminonitrile, 2-morpholino-2-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)acetonitrile (C15H20N2O4), was prepared through a silica sulfuric acid-catalyzed Strecker reaction between 3,4,5-trimethoxybenzaldehyde, morpholine, and two different cyanide sources. Molecular characterization was performed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, (1H, 13C – mono and bidimensional) nuclear magnetic resonance; crystallographic characterization was completed by X-ray powder diffraction of polycrystalline samples. The title compounds crystallized in a monoclinic system and unit-cell parameters are reported [a = 13.904(2), b = 5.1696(6), c = 21.628(3) Å, β = 104.31(1)°, unit-cell volume V = 1506.3(3) Å3, Z = 4]. All measured lines were indexed with the P21/a (No. 14) space group.

Experimental X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters, and space group for trelagliptin succinate, C18H20FN5O2•C4H6O4, are reported [a = 18.481(6), b = 8.120(4), c = 7.903(4) Å, α = 89.972(0)°, β = 97.722(4)°, γ = 90.120(0)°, unit-cell volume V = 1175.37 Å3, Z = 2, and space-group P1]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the P1 space group. No detectable impurity was observed.

2-[((3R)-5-oxo-4-phenyltetrahydrofuran-3-yl)methyl]isoindoline-1,3-dione, C19H15NO4, was synthesized for the first time. Its structure was characterized by element analysis, ultraviolet spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, and single X-ray diffraction (SXRD). X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) data of title compound were collected and calculated. The result of SXRD shows that its crystal system is orthorhombic, space group is Pbca, and unit-cell parameters are a = 8.861 57(7), b = 14.6666(10), c = 24.4247(19) Å, α =β =γ =90°, unit-cell volume V = 3174.4 Å3, and Z = 8. All XRPD measured lines were indexed and consistent with the Pbca space group [a = 14.639(7), b = 24.378(3), c = 8.918(1) Å, α = β = γ = 90°, unit-cell volume V = 3182.7(9) Å3, Z = 8]. No detectable impurities were observed.

Apixaban (Eliquis®) is a novel oral pyrazole-based direct FXa inhibitor. The title compound is an intermediate in the synthesis of the anticoagulant, Apixaban. X-ray powder diffraction data for the title compound, are reported [a = 9.511(5) Å, b = 18.539(2) Å, c = 5.645(3) Å, α = 90°, β = 101.813(1)°, γ = 90°, unit-cell volume V = 974.28 Å3, Z = 2, ρcal = 1.336 g cm−3, and space group P2]. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the P2 space group. No detectable impurities were observed.
