Let $\psi $ be a decreasing function. We prove zero-infinity Hausdorff measure criteria for the set of dual $\psi $-approximable points and for the set of inhomogeneous multiplicative $\psi $-approximable points on nondegenerate planar curves. Our results extend theorems of Huang [‘Hausdorff theory of dual approximation on planar curves’, J. reine angew. Math. 740 (2018), 63–76] and Beresnevich and Velani [‘A note on three problems in metric Diophantine approximation’, in: Recent Trends in Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems, Contemporary Mathematics, 631 (American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 2015), 211–229] from s-Hausdorff measure, where $s\in \mathbb R$, to the more general g-Hausdorff measure, where g is a suitable class of dimension functions.

Let \[||x||\] denote the distance from \[x \in \mathbb{R}\] to the nearest integer. In this paper, we prove a new existence and density result for matrices \[A \in {\mathbb{R}^{m \times n}}\] satisfying the inequality

where q ranges in \[{\mathbb{Z}^n}\] and Ai denote the rows of the matrix A. This result extends previous work of Moshchevitin both to arbitrary dimension and to the inhomogeneous setting. The estimates needed to apply Moshchevitin’s method to the case m > 2 are not currently available. We therefore develop a substantially different method, based on Cantor-like set constructions of Badziahin and Velani. Matrices with the above property also appear to have very small sums of reciprocals of fractional parts. This fact helps us to shed light on a question raised by Lê and Vaaler on such sums, thereby proving some new estimates in higher dimension.

Let $p$ be a prime number. For a positive integer $n$ and a real number $\xi$, let $\lambda _n (\xi )$ denote the supremum of the real numbers $\lambda$ for which there are infinitely many integer tuples $(x_0, x_1, \ldots , x_n)$ such that $| x_0 \xi - x_1|_p, \ldots , | x_0 \xi ^{n} - x_n|_p$ are all less than $X^{-\lambda - 1}$, where $X$ is the maximum of $|x_0|, |x_1|, \ldots , |x_n|$. We establish new results on the Hausdorff dimension of the set of real numbers $\xi$ for which $\lambda _n (\xi )$ is equal to (or greater than or equal to) a given value.

Let G be a semisimple real algebraic group defined over ${\mathbb {Q}}$ , $\Gamma $ be an arithmetic subgroup of G, and T be a maximal ${\mathbb {R}}$ -split torus. A trajectory in $G/\Gamma $ is divergent if eventually it leaves every compact subset. In some cases there is a finite collection of explicit algebraic data which accounts for the divergence. If this is the case, the divergent trajectory is called obvious. Given a closed cone in T, we study the existence of non-obvious divergent trajectories under its action in $G\kern-1pt{/}\kern-1pt\Gamma $ . We get a sufficient condition for the existence of a non-obvious divergence trajectory in the general case, and a full classification under the assumption that $\mathrm {rank}_{{\mathbb {Q}}}G=\mathrm {rank}_{{\mathbb {R}}}G=2$ .

We present a new method of proving the Diophantine extremality of various dynamically defined measures, vastly expanding the class of measures known to be extremal. This generalizes and improves the celebrated theorem of Kleinbock and Margulis [Logarithm laws for flows on homogeneous spaces. Invent. Math.138(3) (1999), 451–494] resolving Sprindžuk’s conjecture, as well as its extension by Kleinbock, Lindenstrauss, and Weiss [On fractal measures and Diophantine approximation. Selecta Math.10 (2004), 479–523], hereafter abbreviated KLW. As applications we prove the extremality of all hyperbolic measures of smooth dynamical systems with sufficiently large Hausdorff dimension, and of the Patterson–Sullivan measures of all nonplanar geometrically finite groups. The key technical idea, which has led to a plethora of new applications, is a significant weakening of KLW’s sufficient conditions for extremality. In the first of this series of papers [Extremality and dynamically defined measures, part I: Diophantine properties of quasi-decaying measures. Selecta Math.24(3) (2018), 2165–2206], we introduce and develop a systematic account of two classes of measures, which we call quasi-decaying and weakly quasi-decaying. We prove that weak quasi-decay implies strong extremality in the matrix approximation framework, as well as proving the ‘inherited exponent of irrationality’ version of this theorem. In this paper, the second of the series, we establish sufficient conditions on various classes of conformal dynamical systems for their measures to be quasi-decaying. In particular, we prove the above-mentioned result about Patterson–Sullivan measures, and we show that equilibrium states (including conformal measures) of nonplanar infinite iterated function systems (including those which do not satisfy the open set condition) and rational functions are quasi-decaying.

We establish various new results on a problem proposed by Mahler [Some suggestions for further research. Bull. Aust. Math. Soc.29 (1984), 101–108] concerning rational approximation to fractal sets by rational numbers inside and outside the set in question. Some of them provide a natural continuation and improvement of recent results of Broderick, Fishman and Reich, and Fishman and Simmons. A key feature is that many of our new results apply to more general, multi-dimensional fractal sets and require only mild assumptions on the iterated function system. Moreover, we provide a non-trivial lower bound for the distance of a rational number $p/q$ outside the Cantor middle-third set $C$ to the set $C$, in terms of the denominator $q$. We further discuss patterns of rational numbers in fractal sets. We highlight two of them: firstly, an upper bound for the number of rational (algebraic) numbers in a fractal set up to a given height (and degree) for a wide class of fractal sets; and secondly, we find properties of the denominator structure of rational points in ‘missing-digit’ Cantor sets, generalizing claims of Nagy and Bloshchitsyn.

We show that the parabola is of strong Khintchine type for convergence, which is the first result of its kind for curves. Moreover, Jarník type theorems are established in both the simultaneous and the dual settings, without monotonicity on the approximation function. To achieve the above, we prove a new counting result for the number of rational points with fixed denominators lying close to the parabola, which uses Burgess’s bound on short character sums.

We estimate the linear independence measures for the values of a class of Mahler functions of degrees 1 and 2. For this purpose, we study the determinants of suitable Hermite–Padé approximation polynomials. Based on the non-vanishing property of these determinants, we apply the functional equations to get an infinite sequence of approximations that is used to produce the linear independence measures.

In this paper we establish a general form of the mass transference principle for systems of linear forms conjectured in 2009. We also present a number of applications of this result to problems in Diophantine approximation. These include a general transference of Lebesgue measure Khintchine–Groshev type theorems to Hausdorff measure statements. The statements we obtain are applicable in both the homogeneous and inhomogeneous settings as well as allowing transference under any additional constraints on approximating integer points. In particular, we establish Hausdorff measure counterparts of some Khintchine–Groshev type theorems with primitivity constraints recently proved by Dani, Laurent and Nogueira.

This paper is motivated by Davenport’s problem and the subsequent work regarding badly approximable points in submanifolds of a Euclidean space. We study the problem in the area of twisted Diophantine approximation and present two different approaches. The first approach shows that, under a certain restriction, any countable intersection of the sets of weighted badly approximable points on any non-degenerate ${\mathcal{C}}^{1}$ submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ has full dimension. In the second approach, we introduce the property of isotropically winning and show that the sets of weighted badly approximable points are isotropically winning under the same restriction as above.

The approximation constant ${\it\lambda}_{k}({\it\zeta})$ is defined as the supremum of ${\it\eta}\in \mathbb{R}$ such that the estimate $\max _{1\leqslant j\leqslant k}\Vert {\it\zeta}^{j}x\Vert \leqslant x^{-{\it\eta}}$ has infinitely many integer solutions $x$. Here $\Vert .\Vert$ denotes the distance to the closest integer. We establish a connection on the joint spectrum $({\it\lambda}_{1}({\it\zeta}),{\it\lambda}_{2}({\it\zeta}),\ldots )$, which will lead to various improvements of known results on the individual spectrum of the approximation constants ${\it\lambda}_{k}({\it\zeta})$ as well. In particular, for given $k\geqslant 1$ and ${\it\lambda}\geqslant 1$, we construct ${\it\zeta}$ in the Cantor set with ${\it\lambda}_{k}({\it\zeta})={\it\lambda}$. Moreover, we establish an estimate for the uniform approximation constants $\widehat{{\it\lambda}}_{k}({\it\zeta})$, which enables us to determine classical approximation constants for Liouville numbers.

In this paper, the Khintchine-type theorems of Beresnevich (Acta Arith. 90 (1999), 97) and Bernik (Acta Arith. 53 (1989), 17) for polynomials are generalised to incorporate a natural restriction on derivatives. This represents the first attempt to solve a problem posed by Bernik, Kleinbock and Margulis (Int. Math. Res. Notices2001(9) (2001), 453). More specifically, the main result provides a probabilistic criterion for the solvability of the system of inequalities |P(x)| < Ψ1(H) and |P′(x)| < Ψ2(H) in integral polynomials P of degree ≤ n and height H, where Ψ1 and Ψ2 are fairly general error functions. The proof builds upon Sprindzuk's method of essential and inessential domains and the recent ideas of Beresnevich, Bernik and Götze (Compositio Math. 146 (2010), 1165) concerning the distribution of algebraic numbers.

We investigate the distribution of real algebraic numbers of a fixed degree that have a close conjugate number, with the distance between the conjugate numbers being given as a function of their height. The main result establishes the ubiquity of such algebraic numbers in the real line and implies a sharp quantitative bound on their number. Although the main result is rather general, it implies new estimates on the least possible distance between conjugate algebraic numbers, which improve recent bounds obtained by Bugeaud and Mignotte. So far, the results à la Bugeaud and Mignotte have relied on finding explicit families of polynomials with clusters of roots. Here we suggest a different approach in which irreducible polynomials are implicitly tailored so that their derivatives assume certain values. We consider some applications of our main theorem, including generalisations of a theorem of Baker and Schmidt and a theorem of Bernik, Kleinbock and Margulis in the metric theory of Diophantine approximation.

We give a two dimensional extension of the three distance theorem. Let $\theta $ be in ${{\mathbf{R}}^{2}}$ and let $q$ be in $\mathbf{N}$. Answering a question of Y. Bugeaud and M. Laurent, we show that the exponents $\widehat{{{\lambda }_{2}}}\left( \xi \right)$ where $\xi$ ranges through all real numbers with $[\mathbb{Q}(\xi )\,:\mathbb{Q}]\,>\,2$ form a dense subset of the interval $\left[ 1/2,\,\left( \sqrt{5}\,-\,1 \right)/2 \right]$ while, for the same values of $\xi$, the dual exponents $\widehat{{{\omega }_{2}}}\left( \xi \right)$ form a dense subset of $\left[ 2,\,\left( \sqrt{5}\,+\,3 \right)/2 \right]$. Part of the proof rests on a result of V. Jarník showing that $\widehat{{{\lambda }_{2}}}\left( \xi \right)=1-{{\hat{\omega }}_{2}}{{\left( \xi \right)}^{-1}}$ for any real number $\xi$ with $[\mathbb{Q}(\xi )\,:\mathbb{Q}]\,>\,2$.

Using reparametrizations of linear flows, we show that there exist area-preserving real analytic maps of the three-dimensional torus that are ‘mixing of all orders’ and do not enjoy the monotone shrinking target property. Prior to that, we give a short proof of a result of Kurzweil from 1955: namely, that a translation $T_\alpha$ of the torus $\mathbb{T}^d$ has the monotone shrinking target property if and only if the vector $\alpha$ is badly approximable (that is, of constant type).

For any given real number $\alpha$ with bounded partial quotients, we construct explicitly continuum many real numbers $\beta$ with bounded partial quotients for which the pair $(\alpha, \beta)$ satisfies a strong form of the Littlewood conjecture. Our proof is elementary and rests on the basic theory of continued fractions.

In 1969, H. Davenport and W. M. Schmidt studied the problem of approximation to a real number $\xi$ by algebraic integers of degree at most 3. They did so, using geometry of numbers, by resorting to the dual problem of finding simultaneous approximations to $\xi$ and $\xi^2$ by rational numbers with the same denominator. In this paper, we show that their measure of approximation for the dual problem is optimal and that it is realized for a countable set of real numbers $\xi$. We give several properties of these numbers including measures of approximation by rational numbers, by quadratic real numbers and by algebraic integers of degree at most 3.

Continued fractions associated with $\text{G}{{\text{L}}_{3}}\left( \mathbf{Z} \right)$ are introduced and applied to find fundamental units in a two-parameter family of complex cubic fields.
