In this article we establish the arithmetic purity of strong approximation for certain semisimple simply connected linear algebraic groups and their homogeneous spaces over a number field $k$. For instance, for any such group $G$ and for any open subset $U$ of $G$ with ${\mathrm {codim}}(G\setminus U, G)\geqslant 2$, we prove that (i) if $G$ is $k$-simple and $k$-isotropic, then $U$ satisfies strong approximation off any finite number of places; and (ii) if $G$ is the spin group of a non-degenerate quadratic form which is not compact over archimedean places, then $U$ satisfies strong approximation off all archimedean places. As a consequence, we prove that the same property holds for affine quadratic hypersurfaces. Our approach combines a fibration method with subgroup actions developed for induction on the codimension of $G\setminus U$, and an affine linear sieve which allows us to produce integral points with almost-prime polynomial values.

In the present paper, which is a direct sequel of our paper [14] joint with Roozbeh Hazrat, we prove an unrelativized version of the standard commutator formula in the setting of Chevalley groups. Namely, let Φ be a reduced irreducible root system of rank ≥ 2, let R be a commutative ring and let I,J be two ideals of R. We consider subgroups of the Chevalley group G(Φ, R) of type Φ over R. The unrelativized elementary subgroup E(Φ, I) of level I is generated (as a group) by the elementary unipotents xα(ξ), α ∈ Φ, ξ ∈ I, of level I. Obviously, in general, E(Φ, I) has no chance to be normal in E(Φ, R); its normal closure in the absolute elementary subgroup E(Φ, R) is denoted by E(Φ, R, I). The main results of [14] implied that the commutator [E(Φ, I), E(Φ, J)] is in fact normal in E(Φ, R). In the present paper we prove an unexpected result, that in fact [E(Φ, I), E(Φ, J)] = [E(Φ, R, I), E(Φ, R, J)]. It follows that the standard commutator formula also holds in the unrelativized form, namely [E(Φ, I), C(Φ, R, J)] = [E(Φ, I), E(Φ, J)], where C(Φ, R, I) is the full congruence subgroup of level I. In particular, E(Φ, I) is normal in C(Φ, R, I).

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic 0. Let $G$ be a reductive group over the ring of Laurent polynomials $R\,=\,k\left[ x_{1}^{\pm 1},\ldots ,x_{n}^{\pm 1} \right]$ . Assume that $G$ contains a maximal $R$ -torus, and that every semisimple normal subgroup of $G$ contains a two-dimensional split torus $\mathbf{G}_{m}^{2}$ . We show that the natural map of non-stable ${{K}_{1}}$ -functors, also called Whitehead groups, $K_{1}^{G}\left( R \right)\,\to \,K_{1}^{G}\left( k\left( \left( {{x}_{1}} \right) \right)\cdots \left( \left( {{x}_{n}} \right) \right) \right)$ is injective, and an isomorphism if $G$ is semisimple. As an application, we provide a way to compute the difference between the full automorphism group of a Lie torus (in the sense of Yoshii–Neher) and the subgroup generated by exponential automorphisms.

Let $k$ be an infinite field. Let $R$ be the semi-local ring of a finite family of closed points on a $k$-smooth affine irreducible variety, let $K$ be the fraction field of $R$, and let $G$ be a reductive simple simply connected $R$-group scheme isotropic over $R$. We study commutators in pseudo-orthogonal groups O2nR (including unitary, symplectic, and ordinary orthogonal groups) and in the conformal pseudo-orthogonal groups GO2nR. We estimate the number of commutators, c(O2nR) and c(GO2nR), needed to represent every element in the commutator subgroup. We show that c(O2nR) ≤ 4 if R satisfies the ∧-stable condition and either n ≥ 3 or n = 2 and 1 is the sum of two units in R, and that c(GO2nR) ≤ 3 when the involution is trivial and ∧ = R∈. We also show that c(O2nR) ≤ 3 and c(GO2nR) ≤ 2 for the ordinary orthogonal group O2nR over a commutative ring R of absolute stable rank 1 where either n ≥ 3 or n = 2 and 1 is the sum of two units in R.

In the present paper we completely describe the isomorphisms between projective elementary groups PSLn and PSLm (n ≥ 2, m ≥ 2) over division rings. It was found that such groups can be isomorphic only if n = m; the division rings are isomorphic or anti-isomorphic, except for the following groups:

PSL(2,F7) and PSL(3,F2); PSL(2, F4) and PSL(2,F5).

The idea is based on a deepening of the classical Hua's approach. This problem has been solved independently by H. Ren, Z. Wan and X. Wu using a different way
