Using the $H^{\infty }$-functional calculus for quaternionic operators, we show how to generate the fractional powers of some densely defined differential quaternionic operators of order $m\geq 1$, acting on the right linear quaternionic Hilbert space $L^{2}(\Omega,\mathbb {C}\otimes \mathbb {H})$. We construct two bounded functional calculi for sectorial operators on Banach spaces, which enhance the functional calculus for analytic Besov functions, by extending the class of functions, generalising and sharpening estimates and adapting the calculus to the angle of sectoriality. The calculi are based on appropriate reproducing formulas, they are compatible with standard functional calculi and they admit appropriate convergence lemmas and spectral mapping theorems. To achieve this, we develop the theory of associated function spaces in ways that are interesting and significant. As consequences of our calculi, we derive several well-known operator norm estimates and provide generalisations of some of them.

It is shown that Jamison sequences, introduced in 2007 by Badea and Grivaux, arise naturally in the study of topological groups with no small subgroups, of Banach or normed algebra elements whose powers are close to identity along subsequences, and in characterizations of (self-adjoint) positive operators by the accretiveness of some of their powers. The common core of these results is a description of those sequences for which non-identity elements in Lie groups or normed algebras escape an arbitrary small neighborhood of the identity in a number of steps belonging to the given sequence. Several spectral characterizations of Jamison sequences are given, and other related results are proved.

The joint Brown measure and joint Haagerup–Schultz projections for tuples of commuting operators in a von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful tracial state are investigated, and several natural properties are proved for these. It is shown that the support of the joint Brown measure is contained in the Taylor joint spectrum of the tuple, and also in the ostensibly smaller left Harte spectrum. A simultaneous upper triangularization result for finite commuting tuples is proved, and the joint Brown measure and joint Haagerup–Schultz projections are shown to behave well under the Arens multivariate holomorphic functional calculus of such a commuting tuple.

Let ${\mathcal{H}}=\mathbb{C}^{n}\otimes {\mathcal{E}}$ be the tensor product of a Euclidean space $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ and a separable Hilbert space ${\mathcal{E}}$. Our main object is the operator $G=I_{n}\otimes S+A\otimes I_{{\mathcal{E}}}$, where $S$ is a normal operator in ${\mathcal{E}}$, $A$ is an $n\times n$ matrix, and $I_{n},I_{{\mathcal{E}}}$ are the unit operators in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ and ${\mathcal{E}}$, respectively. Numerous differential operators with constant matrix coefficients are examples of operator $G$. In the present paper we show that $G$ is similar to an operator $M=I_{n}\otimes S+\hat{D}\times I_{{\mathcal{E}}}$ where $\hat{D}$ is a block matrix, each block of which has a unique eigenvalue. We also obtain a bound for the condition number. That bound enables us to establish norm estimates for functions of $G$, nonregular on the closed convex hull $\operatorname{co}(G)$ of the spectrum of $G$. The functions $G^{-\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}}\;(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}>0)$ and $(\ln G)^{-1}$ are examples of such functions. In addition, in the appropriate situations we improve the previously published estimates for the resolvent and functions of $G$ regular on $\operatorname{co}(G)$. Since differential operators with variable coefficients often can be considered as perturbations of operators with constant coefficients, the results mentioned above give us estimates for functions and bounds for the spectra of differential operators with variable coefficients.

Let $T$ be a quadratic operator on a complex Hilbert space $H$ . We show that $T$ can be written as a product of two positive contractions if and only if $T$ is of the form

Also, we give a necessary condition for a bounded linear operator $T$ with operator matrix $\left( \begin{matrix} {{T}_{1}} & {{T}_{3}} \\ 0 & {{T}_{2}} \\ \end{matrix} \right)$ on $H\,\oplus \,K$ that can be written as a product of two positive contractions.

In this paper we introduce the two possible formulations of the -functional calculus that are based on the Fueter–Sce mapping theorem in integral form and we introduce the pseudo--resolvent equation. In the case of dimension 3 we prove the -resolvent equation and we study the analogue of the Riesz projectors associated with this calculus. The case of dimension 3 is also useful to study the quaternionic version of the -functional calculus.

We compare various functional calculus properties of Ritt operators. We show the existence of a Ritt operator T: X → X on some Banach space X with the following property: T has a bounded H∞-functional calculus with respect to the unit disc 𝔻(that is, T is polynomially bounded) but T does not have any bounded H∞-functional calculus with respect to a Stolz domain of 𝔻 with vertex at 1. Also we show that for an R-Ritt operator the unconditional Ritt condition of Kalton and Portal is equivalent to the existence of a bounded H∞-functional calculus with respect to such a Stolz domain.

We show results on Lp-spectral multipliers for Maxwell operators with bounded measurable coefficients. We also present similar results for the Stokes operator with Hodge boundary conditions and the Lamé system. Here, we rely on resolvent estimates recently established by Mitrea and Monniaux.

Let $T$ be a contraction on a complex, separable, infinite dimensional Hilbert space and let $\sigma (T)\,(\text{resp}\text{.}\,{{\sigma }_{e}}(T))$ be its spectrum (resp. essential spectrum). We assume that $T$ is an essentially isometric operator; that is, ${{I}_{H}}\,-\,T*T$ is compact. We show that if $D\backslash \sigma (T)\,\ne \,\varnothing $, then for every $f$ from the disc-algebra

Let A, B be non-negative bounded self-adjoint operators, and let a be a real number such that 0 < a < 1. The Loewner–Heinz inequality means that A ≤ B implies that Aa ≦ Ba. We show that A ≤ B if and only if (A + λ)a ≦ (B + λ)a for every λ > 0. We then apply this to the geometric mean and spectral order.

A-Weyl's theorem and property (ω), as two variations of Weyl's theorem, were introduced by Rakočević. In this paper, we study a-Weyl's theorem and property (ω) for functions of bounded linear operators. A necessary and sufficient condition is given for an operator T to satisfy that f(T) obeys a-Weyl's theorem (property (ω)) for all f ∈ Hol(σ(T)). Also we investigate the small-compact perturbations of operators satisfying a-Weyl's theorem (property (ω)) in the setting of separable Hilbert spaces.

Let $T$ be a sectorial operator. It is known that the existence of a bounded (suitably scaled) ${{H}^{\infty }}$ calculus for $T$, on every sector containing the positive half-line, is equivalent to the existence of a bounded functional calculus on the Besov algebra $\Lambda _{\infty ,1}^{\alpha }({{\mathbb{R}}^{+}})$. Such an algebra includes functions defined byMikhlin-type conditions and so the Besov calculus can be seen as a result on multipliers for $T$. In this paper, we use fractional derivation to analyse in detail the relationship between $\Lambda _{\infty ,1}^{\alpha }$ and Banach algebras of Mikhlin-type. As a result, we obtain a new version of the quoted equivalence.

We discuss ℓp-maximal regularity of power-bounded operators and relate the discrete to the continuous time problem for analytic semigroups. We give a complete characterization of operators with ℓ1 and -maximal regularity. We also introduce an unconditional form of Ritt’s condition for power-bounded operators, which plays the role of the existence of an -calculus, and give a complete characterization of this condition in the case of Banach spaces which are L1-spaces, C(K)-spaces or Hilbert spaces.

We give a simplified proof of the complex inversion formula for semigroups and, more generally, solution families for scalar-type Volterra equations, including the stronger versions on unconditional martingale differences (UMD) spaces. Our approach is based on (elementary) Fourier analysis.

Several rather general sufficient conditions for the extrapolation of the calculus of generalized Dirac operators from L2 to Lp are established. As consequences, we obtain some embedding theorems, quadratic estimates and Littlewood–Paley theorems in terms of this calculus in Lebesgue spaces. Some further generalizations, utilised in Part II devoted to applications, which include the Kato square root model, are discussed. We use resolvent approach and show the irrelevance of the semigroup one. Auxiliary results include a high order counterpart of the Hilbert identity, the derivation of new forms of ‘off-diagonal’ estimates, and the study of the structure of the model in Lebesgue spaces and its interpolation properties. In particular, some coercivity conditions for forms in Banach spaces are used as a substitution of the ellipticity ones. Attention is devoted to the relations between the properties of perturbed and unperturbed generalized Dirac operators. We do not use any stability results.
