In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the rigidity of the perimeter inequality under Schwarz symmetrization. The term rigidity refers to the situation in which the equality cases are only obtained by translations of the symmetric set. In particular, we prove that the sufficient conditions for rigidity provided in M. Barchiesi, F. Cagnetti and N. Fusco [Stability of the Steiner symmetrization of convex sets. J. Eur. Math. Soc. 15 (2013), 1245-1278.] are also necessary.

Let $\mu $ and $\nu $ be Borel probability measures on complete separable metric spaces X and Y, respectively. Each Borel probability measure $\gamma $ on $X\times Y$ with marginals $\mu $ and $\nu $ can be described through its disintegration $\big ( \gamma _{x}\big )_{x \in X}$ with respect to the initial distribution $\mu .$ Assume that $\mu $ is continuous, i.e., $\mu \big (\{x\}\big )=0$ for all $x \in X.$ We shall analyze the structure of the support of the measure $\gamma $ provided $\text {card } \big (\mathrm{spt} (\gamma _{x}) \big )$ is finitely countable for $\mu $-a.e. $x\in X.$ We shall also provide an application to optimal mass transportation.

In this paper, we study the functional given by the integral of the mean curvature of a convex set with Gaussian weight with Gaussian volume constraint. It was conjectured that the ball centred at the origin is the only minimizer of such a functional for certain values of the mass. We prove that this is the case in dimension 2 while in higher dimension the situation is different. In fact, for small values of mass, the ball centred at the origin is a local minimizer, while for larger values the ball is a maximizer among convex sets with a uniform bound on the curvature.

We prove topological regularity results for isoperimetric sets in PI spaces having a suitable deformation property, which prescribes a control on the increment of the perimeter of sets under perturbations with balls. More precisely, we prove that isoperimetric sets are open, satisfy boundary density estimates and, under a uniform lower bound on the volumes of unit balls, are bounded. Our results apply, in particular, to the class of possibly collapsed $\mathrm {RCD}(K,N)$ spaces. As a consequence, the rigidity in the isoperimetric inequality on possibly collapsed $\mathrm {RCD}(0,N)$ spaces with Euclidean volume growth holds without the additional assumption on the boundedness of isoperimetric sets. Our strategy is of interest even in the Euclidean setting, as it simplifies some classical arguments.

We analyse the $\Gamma$-convergence of general non-local convolution type functionals with varying densities depending on the space variable and on the symmetrized gradient. The limit is a local free-discontinuity functional, where the bulk term can be completely characterized in terms of an asymptotic cell formula. From that, we can deduce an homogenisation result in the stochastic setting.

Motivated by some models of pattern formation involving an unoriented director field in the plane, we study a family of unoriented counterparts to the Aviles–Giga functional. We introduce a nonlinear $\operatorname {\mathrm {curl}}$ operator for such unoriented vector fields as well as a family of even entropies which we call ‘trigonometric entropies’. Using these tools, we show two main theorems which parallel some results in the literature on the classical Aviles–Giga energy. The first is a compactness result for sequences of configurations with uniformly bounded energies. The second is a complete characterization of zero-states, that is, the limit configurations when the energies go to 0. These are Lipschitz continuous away from a locally finite set of points, near which they form either a vortex pattern or a disclination with degree 1/2. The proof is based on a combination of regularity theory together with techniques coming from the study of the Ginzburg–Landau energy. Our methods provide alternative proofs in the classical Aviles–Giga context.

A tight frame is the orthogonal projection of some orthonormal basis of $\mathbb {R}^n$ onto $\mathbb {R}^k.$ We show that a set of vectors is a tight frame if and only if the set of all cross products of these vectors is a tight frame. We reformulate a range of problems on the volume of projections (or sections) of regular polytopes in terms of tight frames and write a first-order necessary condition for local extrema of these problems. As applications, we prove new results for the problem of maximization of the volume of zonotopes.

We consider the problem of finding two free export/import sets $E^+$ and $E^-$ that minimize the total cost of some export/import transportation problem (with export/import taxes $g^\pm $ ), between two densities $f^+$ and $f^-$ , plus penalization terms on $E^+$ and $E^-$ . First, we prove the existence of such optimal sets under some assumptions on $f^\pm $ and $g^\pm $ . Then we study some properties of these sets such as convexity and regularity. In particular, we show that the optimal free export (resp. import) region $E^+$ (resp. $E^-$ ) has a boundary of class $C^2$ as soon as $f^+$ (resp. $f^-$ ) is continuous and $\partial E^+$ (resp. $\partial E^-$ ) is $C^{2,1}$ provided that $f^+$ (resp. $f^-$ ) is Lipschitz.

Similar to how Hopf–Lax–Oleinik-type formula yield variational solutions for Hamilton–Jacobi equations on Euclidean space, optimal mass transportations can sometimes provide variational formulations for solutions of certain mean-field games. We demonstrate that Radon measures which arise as the limit of the Modica-Mortola measures associated with phase-fields with uniformly bounded diffuse area and Willmore energy may be singular at the boundary of a domain and discuss implications for practical applications. We furthermore give partial regularity results for the phase-fields uε at the boundary in terms of boundary conditions and counterexamples without boundary conditions.

We review some simple techniques based on monotone-mass transport that allow us to obtain transport-type inequalities for any log-concave probability measures, and for more general measures as well. We discuss quantitative forms of these inequalities, with application to the Brascamp–Lieb variance inequality.

We study a multimarginal optimal transportation problem in one dimension. For a symmetric, repulsive cost function, we show that, given a minimizing transport plan, its symmetrization is induced by a cyclical map, and that the symmetric optimal plan is unique. The class of costs that we consider includes, in particular, the Coulomb cost, whose optimal transport problem is strictly related to the strong interaction limit of Density Functional Theory. In this last setting, our result justifies some qualitative properties of the potentials observed in numerical experiments.

We extend results proved by the second author (Amer. J. Math., 2009) for nonnegatively curved Alexandrov spaces to general compact Alexandrov spaces $X$ with curvature bounded below. The gradient flow of a geodesically convex functional on the quadratic Wasserstein space $\left( \mathcal{P}\left( X \right),\,{{W}_{2}} \right)$ satisfies the evolution variational inequality. Moreover, the gradient flow enjoys uniqueness and contractivity. These results are obtained by proving a first variation formula for the Wasserstein distance.

The simulation of distributions of financial assets is an important issue for financial institutions. If risk measures are evaluated for a simulated distribution instead of the model-implied distribution, the errors in the risk measurements need to be analyzed. For distribution-invariant risk measures which are continuous on compacts, we employ the theory of large deviations to study the probability of large errors. If the approximate risk measurements are based on the empirical distribution of independent samples, then the rate function equals the minimal relative entropy under a risk measure constraint. We solve this minimization problem explicitly for shortfall risk and average value at risk.
