A four-year field study (2013–2016) was conducted to screen Indian sugarcane hybrids together with two susceptible checks against internode borer Chilo sacchariphagus indicus (Kapur) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) in endemic locations of Tamil Nadu State, India. Each year, borer incidence on cane basis and intensity on internode basis were assessed at harvest to eliminate susceptible entries. Of the total 535 hybrids screened, only Co 293 emerged as resistant at the end of fourth year trial which was confirmed in tests under controlled conditions with artificial infestation. A modified relative resistance ratio computed using incidence and intensity also confirmed its resistance to the borer. In laboratory oviposition choice tests with excised leaves of the resistant Co 293 and susceptible hybrids Co 86032 and Co 1060, percent of leaf bits oviposited, egg masses laid, and egg numbers deposited were significantly lowest in Co 293. Also, an oviposition preference index computed for both egg mass number and egg number was significantly lowest for Co 293 which suggested antixenosis. Larval survival was significantly lowest in Co 293 with 5 to 10-fold higher neonate mortality than in the two susceptible hybrids. Prolonged larval development period and lower fecundity were observed when the borer was reared on Co 293 which indicated antibiosis. A relative suitability ratio developed from larval and pupal durations also indicated lower suitability of Co 293. Among the plant morphological characters examined, leaf length and cane thickness positively influenced borer incidence; loose sheath-clasp was associated with higher borer incidence. Among 12 shoot phenolics quantified, eight were present in higher quantities in Co 293 suggesting their role in antibiosis. Co 293 identified as resistant hybrid in the present study has the potential to be used as a parent in breeding programs for C. sacchariphagus indicus resistance.

Diabrotica speciosa (Germar) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a major pest of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.; Fabales: Fabaceae), and adults can defoliate plants during the whole crop cycle. This study was conducted to evaluate the resistance to D. speciosa in 16 common bean genotypes (14 landraces and 2 cultivars), through three different experiments. In the laboratory, choice and no-choice feeding tests were performed to evaluate the percentage of leaf consumption. In the greenhouse, plant height, numbers of leaves, percentage of injured leaves, percentage of injury per leaf, weight of seeds, and D. speciosa survival were evaluated. Furthermore, trichome density, levels of peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and protein content in common bean leaves were assessed. In the laboratory, the genotypes Chumbinho Branco, Dobalde, Manteigado, IPR Tuiuiú, and 90D Mouro were the least consumed by D. speciosa. In the greenhouse, the genotypes Dobalde, Manteigado, and IPR Tuiuiú expressed tolerance to the pest, which was associated with a higher plant height and/or unchanged POD and SOD levels and protein content following insect feeding, and no reduction in seed production. The landrace 90D Mouro exhibited antixenosis and tolerance to D. speciosa, observed as a lower leaf injury, higher trichome density, lower protein contents, higher SOD level and no reduction in seed weight. Overall, we have shown that antixenosis and tolerance can help overcome damages resulting from D. speciosa feeding, with emphasis on four common bean genotypes that may be useful in plant breeding programs aimed at controlling D. speciosa in common bean crops.

The cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae L. (Hem: Aphididae), is one of the most serious pests of canola worldwide. In this research, the effects of Pseudomonas putida, salicylic acid (SA), and integrated application of both inducers were studied on the resistance of canola to B. brassicae. In free-choice situation, the number of B. brassicae attracted on canola plants under treatments containing P. putida and SA was significantly lower compared to control plants. In the life table study, pre-adult survival, longevity, reproductive period, and fecundity of this aphid were lowest on plants treated with P. putida + SA. The net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of population increase (r), and finite rate of increase (λ) of B. brassicae decreased significantly in the following order: control (47.19 offspring, 0.293 and 1.340 day−1), P. putida (16.7 offspring, 0.238 and 1.269 day−1), SA (6.37 offspring, 0.163 and 1.178 day−1), and P. putida + SA (3.24 offspring, 0.112 and 1.119 day−1). Moreover, the beneficial effect of the integrated application of P. putida and SA on plant growth parameters was significantly evident in our study. The highest values of glucosinolates, total phenol, and flavonoids were recorded in P. putida + SA treatment. We concluded that canola plants treated with P. putida + SA are more resistant to the cabbage aphid. These findings demonstrated that SA integrated with P. putida on canola plants act effectively for reducing the population of B. brassicae and can be used in integrated management programs of this pest.

The corn leaf aphid, Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is an important pest of corn, but no corn genotypes resistant to R. maidis are commercially available. Although the ability of silicon to induce plant resistance against some insects is known, the effect of silicon on R. maidis and in corn hybrids with different levels of constitutive resistance is still unknown. This study sought to determine the constitutive resistance of corn hybrids to R. maidis and silicon resistance induction in hybrids with different degrees of constitutive resistance. Field experiments with natural infestations of aphids were conducted in three locations in Brazil (Patos de Minas, Araguari, and Tupaciguara). Greenhouse trials were also used to evaluate the effect of varietal resistance on aphid population growth and identify resistant and susceptible genotypes. Aphid resistance induced by silicon was determined with resistant and susceptible corn hybrids. In the field, the corn hybrids BM8850, AS1625PRO, and DKB310PRO had the greatest proportion of plants infested by R. maidis in all three localities. The hybrids P30F53H, STATUS VIP, BM9288, DAS2B587HX, DKB175PRO, AS1633PRO, and DKB390PRO2 were the least infested in Patos de Minas and Araguari, and P30F53H was the least infested in Tupaciguara. When antibiosis effects were evaluated by aphid population growth, the hybrids AG7088PRO3 and DKB310PRO2 were susceptible, while P30F53YH was resistant. When natural aphid infestation was evaluated, wherein the effects of antibiosis and non-preference could not be discriminated, soil applications of silicon-induced resistance to R. maidis in both susceptible and constitutively resistant corn hybrids.

Treating plants with synthetic jasmonic acid (JA) induces a defensive response similar to herbivore attack, and is a potential strategy for integrated pest management. Despite the importance of sugarcane, its JA-induced defences have not yet been studied. We investigated the effects of JA treatment on the direct and indirect resistance of sugarcane to the key-pest and specialist herbivore Diatraea saccharalis and the generalist Spodoptera frugiperda. Indirect defences were examined by testing the attraction of Cotesia flavipes, a sugarcane-borer parasitoid, to JA-induced volatile. The results showed that JA-treated sugarcane did not affect the weight gain of the two larvae. However, in dual-choice assays, both species preferred to feed on mock rather than JA-treated plants. Leaf colorimetric analyses showed that visual cues are unlikely to be involved in larval preference, whereas results from olfactometric assays revealed that D. saccharalis preferred JA-induced over mock plant volatiles. After 48 h of treatment, JA-treated plants emitted a volatile blend attractive to C. flavipes, comprised mainly of sesquiterpenes. However, the parasitoid did not discriminate JA-treated from host-damaged plant volatiles. When the wasps were given a choice between JA-treated and JA-treated + host-damaged plants, they preferred the latter, which emitted a more complex blend, suggesting that JA treatment likely does not hamper host-finding. We concluded that JA induces the emission of volatiles that are attractive to the sugarcane borer parasitoid, as well as an antixenosis type of resistance in sugarcane against the two pests, although neither volatiles nor visual cues alone are involved in the underlying mechanism.

Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, known as the Red Palm Weevil (RPW), is reported as a pest of up to 40 palm species. However, the susceptibility degree and the defense mechanisms of these species against this weevil are still poorly known. In Europe, the RPW is a major pest of Phoenix canariensis while other palm species, including the congeneric Phoenix dactylifera, seem to be less suitable hosts for this insect. The aim of our study was to compare the defensive response of P. dactylifera, Chamaerops humilis and Washingtonia filifera against R. ferrugineus and try to define the mechanisms of resistance that characterize these species. Bioassays were carried out to evaluate the mortality induced on RPW larvae by extracts from the leaf rachis of the studied palm species. Tests at semi-field scale were also conducted, based either on forced palm infestation, with larvae of RPW, or on natural infestation, with adult females. Rachis extracts from C. humilis and W. filifera caused 100% larval mortality after 2 days of exposure, while extracts of P. dactylifera did not impair larval survival. Independently of the effect of the leaf extracts, the weevils were unable to naturally infest the three palm species, although larval survival was high after forced infestation of the plants. We concluded that the observed lack of infestation of P. dactylifera by RPW is due to factors other than antibiosis. In W. filifera and C. humilis, although the presence of antixenosis mechanisms cannot be excluded, resistance to R. ferrugineus seems to rely on the presence of antibiosis compounds.

Cacao genotypes of various origins were evaluated for resistance to the cocoa mirid (Sahlbergella singularis (Haglund)) based on field damage, antixenosis, antibiosis and tolerance. Field damage was assessed by scoring recent and cumulative damage by the mirid to the major genetic groups of cacao. Antixenosis assessment was based on the number of feeding lesions on twig segments using a choice test. Antibiosis was measured through survival of young mirid nymphs on shoots and pods, whereas tolerance was assessed through the reaction of the twigs to mirid feeding punctures. Among the genetic groups of cocoa, the Upper Amazon, the materials from Guiana and hybrid genotypes were the least damaged by the mirids, both for recent and cumulative damage. The Catongo group was, by far, the most susceptible group with more than 50% of the canopy showing both recent dieback and cumulative canker damage. With regard to antixenosis, antibiosis and tolerance, significant differences (P < 0.05) were found between the genotypes. The least preferred clones sustained between 2 and 3 lesions compared with the most preferred ones with 6–8 lesions per twig segment. Clones UPA402, T79/501 and IMC67 gave the lowest rate of mirid nymph survival, indicating that they exhibit antibiosis. The clones PA107, SCA6 and C151-61 sustained high numbers of mirid feeding lesions and relatively high levels of shoot death, but have a good ability for re-growth and can be considered as tolerant genotypes.

Antixenosis resistance to Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was studied in 10 tomato accessions selected from a germplasm of 321 at Tamil Nadu, India, using free-choice and no-choice laboratory experiments. The foliage and fruits of two accessions, namely PT 4287 and Varushanadu Local were the least preferred for feeding in both tests. In the no-choice (confinement) test, Seijima Jeisei, Varushanadu Local and PT 4287 were the most preferred for oviposition, but had low egg hatch rates. In the free-choice test, these accessions were the least preferred for oviposition. The first and second instars preferred to feed on the foliage of 30- and 45-day-old plants, respectively than 60- and 75-day-old plants, whereas ovipositional preference was insignificant among the various plant ages.

Thirty-five grain sorghum genotypes representing 6 variable groups (A/B-lines, R-lines, commercial varieties, germplasms, mutants and locals) were evaluated for the orientation, colonisation and oviposition responses of the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), governing the antixenosis component of resistance. In free-choice tests, the orientation and colonisation responses of the weevil were identical among all the genotypes at 24 h, varied at 48 h, and differed widely by 72 h after adult release. High degrees of antixenosis for colonisation by the adult weevils were observed among all the genotypes except 2077A and 2219B, which suggests a predominant reaction to gustatory rather than visual or olfactory stimuli. One to five egg plugs per seed were oviposited, frequently near the endosperm close to the seed base. Greater levels of antixenosis for oviposition were noticed in 2077B, DJ 6514 and IS 11758 in free-choice tests, and 2219B, M 148–138, P 721 and Nizamabad (M) in no-choice tests. To the contrary, M 35–1, Swati and Lakadi showed greater susceptibility for oviposition. Significantly less damage to seed was observed on 2219A/B, 116B, IS 9487, IS 11758, CSV 8R(M) and Local Yellow. Although the differences in seed weight loss were not significant, this parameter was relatively lower in AKMS 14B and 2219B than in the other genotypes. This indicates the need to increase the levels of resistance among the parental A/B-lines in the development of hybrids, in order to ensure better protection from rice weevil infestation in stored sorghum.

The defoliating beetle Mesoplatys ochroptera Stål (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) has become a serious pest of the tropical legume Sesbania sesban (L.) Merrill in agroforestry systems in eastern and southern African countries. In this study, 32 accessions of Sesbania spp. collected from eastern and southern Africa were screened for resistance to M. ochroptera at Msekera, Zambia. Two mechanisms of resistance—antixenosis and antibiosis—were indicated in the different accessions. Accessions of Sesbania bispinosa, S. leptocarpa and S. macrantha were found to be more preferred by the insect compared to S. sesban and S. rostrata accessions. Preference of accessions was negatively correlated with leaf-hair density and positively correlated with the number of leaves per seedling and plant height. Under the conditions of eastern Zambia, some accessions of S. sesban from Kenya, Malawi and Ethiopia were found to be comparable to the Zambian accessions in survival, growth and biomass production. Four accessions of S. sesban—Kakamega (ex Kibwezi) and Kisii 2 from Kenya, Zwai 090 from Ethiopia and Rumphi from Malawi—appeared to compensate well for M. ochroptera damage.

The aim of the present study was to determine, by a field experiment, whether the seasonal variations in the levels of cyanide and rutin in the phloem, secondary compounds potentially implicated in cassava resistance to the cassava mealybug (Phenaccocus manihoti), could be influenced by different kinds of soil fertilisation (manure, NPK, KC1, lime, mulch). It was found that mean cyanide and rutin contents varied significantly with season, soil treatments and infestation. For each soil treatment, the highest contents of these compounds on uninfested plants was registered in the main dry season (Jul-Aug) for cyanide and at the end of the dry season (Jul-Aug) and beginning of the rainy season (Oct-Nov) for rutin. The infestation factor induced an increase in cyanide and rutin contents for 43 combinations of period and soil treatment among 48 in total. For cyanide content (phagostimulant function in mealybug), this increase appeared significant at the end of the rainy season (Apr-May) and in the main dry season (Jul-Aug) for control and KC1 fertilisation. For rutin content (an unfavourable substance for the insect) significant increase was induced by infestation in each period for manure and mulch and especially in the main dry season (Jul-Aug) and at the beginning of the rainy season (Oct-Nov) for other soil treatments. Concerning the seasonal variations in the level of rutin, these results showed that mulch and manure are the best fertilisers to increase cassava resistance against mealybugs.

Cassava varieties resistant to the cassava green mite, Mononychellus tanajoa (Bondar) ( Acari:Tetranychidae) have been reported in many parts of Africa where the pest has been introduced. However, the resistance mechanisms have not been identified. Laboratory studies on biology and feeding behaviour of cassava green mite were carried out at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), in order to determine whether this resistance is mainly due to pubescence.

Cassava pubescence was found to have no antibiotic effect; both pubescent and non-pubescent varieties were preferred by the mite for oviposition, food and shelter. In addition, pubescence does not afford a mechanical barrier to cassava against green mite infestation.

Seedlings of 462 sorghum lines were screened to identify resistance to the sugarcane aphid, Melanaphis sacchari (Zehntner). About 7% of the lines exhibited resistance in the seedling stage in greenhouse trials. In an advanced screening experiment, 12 sorghum lines had resistance ratings of 1.0–3.0 (highly resistant or resistant). In a similar test, older and larger plants of the same lines were as resistant as in the seedling stage. Lines IS12664C, IS12609C, IS12158C, and IS12661C were highly resistant in preliminary and advanced screening trials. Antixenosis was shown to be a mechanism of resistance. Sorghum lines IS12664C, IS1144C, IS1598C, and IS12661C were less preferred than ‘Mtode’, a susceptible sorghum. Based on greenhouse and field trials, antibiosis adversely affected aphid longevity, days reproducing, and progeny production. On the least antibiotic sorghums, longevity, days reproducing, and number of nymphs produced were as high as 13.7, 6.0, and 26.6, respectively. On the most antibiotic sorghums, these values were 4.5, 0.0, and 0.0. Resistance appeared to be controlled by a dominant gene, but there were indications of modifiers linked to major genes.

A total of 2256 germplasm accessions, 3000 advanced generation breeding lines and 150 released varieties of rice were screened under artificial infestation in the greenhouse. Among these, 15 new germplasm accessions, 50 breeding lines derived from 16 crosses and 15 released varieties were resistant. Antibiosis was the predominant resistance mechanism; antixenosis affecting oviposition was noted in 33 resistant varieties. Biochemical composition of a set of resistant varieties along with susceptible checks, revealed that nitrogen content of seven test varieties was significantly higher than that of the susceptible checks, while in other six varieties it was lower than the checks. Similarly, eight of the resistant varieties had considerably higher percentage of polyphenolic compounds in basal stem portion, but seven other cultivars showed significantly lower concentration as compared to susceptible checks. Thus, it was apparent that there was no clear trend among the resistant cultivars as a group in relation to quantitative differences of chemical components analysed.

Antixenotic and antibiotic components of resistance to the cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti Matt. Ferr. were evaluated in different varieties of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz), in Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima Wild), Talinum (Talinum triangulare Jack) and Faux-caoutchouc (hybrid of M. esculenta and M. glaziovii Mull. Arg.). Resistance, was estimated in the field on 25 varieties of cassava by means of varietal screening. Although we were unable to identify varieties ofcassava totally resistant to P. manihoti, there was evidence of partial resistances. Thus the Incoza variety is the most resistant, followed by the Moudouma and Zanaga varieties. On the other hand we found very susceptible varieties, such as Dikonda, Kataoli, 3M8 and 1M20. Laboratory evaluations of the antibiotic component of resistance, made by estimating the intrinsic capacity for increase rc, showed that the host-plantshave a considerable effect on the multiplying capacity of the mealybug. Indeed rc ranges from 0.038 (Poinsettia) to 0.160 (Ganfo cassava variety), i.e. a ratio of 1 to 4 between the two extreme values. If the cassava varieties alone are considered, the percentage of maximum variation is 20% between the Incoza (rc = 0.133) and Ganfo (rc = 0.160) varieties. The Incoza cassava variety is the most resistant, in terms of both antixenosis and antibiosis. Classification of the other cassava varieties, from the most to the least resistant, differs according to the resistant component under consideration. Poinsettia and Talinum both have a very strong antixenotic component, but their antibiotic component differs (rc = 0.038 and 0.150 respectively). Our results suggest that the resistance mechanisms of the host-plants of P. manihoti intervening in the fixation of the pest (antixenosis), are different from those acting on the development of the mealybug (antibiosis). We established significant correlations between the size of the mealybugs and their demographic characteristics for all the plants studied: the duration of the prereproductive period is shorter and the net reproduction rate is higher when the mealybugs are large-sized. These results are discussed in the context of an integrated monitoring programme.

Greenbug, Schizaphis graminum (Rondani), an important vector of barley yellow dwarf mosaic virus, is a major pest of cereals in many countries. A preliminary survey conducted in the Punjab and North Western Frontier Province of Pakistan revealed medium to heavy infestations at Charsadda (density 12 apterous greenbugs/25 plants), Sher Shah (Multan) (density 33) and Malkot (Murree) (density 114). However, it was found in small numbers at many other locations.

A culture of greenbugs collected from Charsadda, was established on susceptible wheat cultivar Faisalabad-83 at 27 ± 3°C, 60% r.h. and 16:8 hr day:night regime. A seedling bulk test using local and exotic host differentials indicated that DS-28A and Largo wheat were susceptible, whereas Amigo wheat, Post and Will barley were resistant. This indicates that the population of greenbug from Charsadda culture was different from greenbug biotypes occurring in the USA. Therefore, it was designated as biotype PK-I for future reference.

Of the 44 recommended wheat cultivars in Pakistan, Punjab-85 was found to be resistant (visual damage rating (DR) 3 at 0 to 9 damage scale; 0, healthy; 9, dead). Faisalabad-85 had a DR of 4, PARI-73, Sandal and Yecora had a DR of 5, and PAK-81, WL-711, Sutluj-86 and Nuri-70 had a DR of 6. All the remaining cultivars were highly susceptible to greenbug (DR ≻ 6).

Three tests, namely, antixenosis (non-preference), antibiosis and tolerance, were conducted to determine the nature of resistance in selected entries. In the antixenosis test, PARI-73, WL-711 and Yecora were found to be the least preferred. The lowest fecundity (antibiosis) of the greenbug was on Punjab-85. In the tolerance test, the lowest damage was recorded on PARI-73 (DR= 4.1), followed by Sandal (DR= 4.8) and Punjab-85 (DR= 4.8). These three tests indicated that resistance in Punjab-85 is mainly due to antibiosis and a low level of tolerance.

During this study 439 native wheat germplasm lines were also tested. Of these, 16 germplasm lines (PAK 15081, PAK 15115, PAK 15139, PAK 15242, PAK 15433, PAK 15479, PAK 15481, PAK 15519, PAK 15992, PAK 15994, PAK 15995, PAK 15997, PAK 16007, PAK 16008, PAK 16010 and PAK 16190) were found to have a high level of resistance (DR ≺ 3). Of the test entries, 114 were moderately resistant (DR= 4–6) and the remainder were susceptible (DR ≻ 6) to greenbug. The germplasm lines found resistant may have different genes for resistance which can be exploited in breeding programmes.

Nature of resistance against the rice leaffolder, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis (Guenee) was studied in 16 rke varieties selected on the basis of greenhouse feeding test. Resistant varieties as a group were less preferred for feeding by the larvae in a free choice test lasting 10 days. Cut leaf assay with limited choice brought out subtle differences among some of the test varieties In larval settling response. Larval preference was correlated positively with the leaf area damage noted In feeding test, per cent pupation and leaf width, and negatively with trichome density. However, oviposltton preference was neither distinct nor correlated with resistance or leaf morphology. An antibiosis component in the test varieties ARC 11128, Balam, Gorsa, ARC 7064 and Ptb 19 was distinctly manifested as reduced larval survival, lower pupation rate and pupal weights in comparison with the susceptible check. When neonate larvae were reared on the meridic diets containing the leaves of the varieties Darukasail, Balam or Ptb 12, antibiotic effects were much more pronounced in comparison with the larvae reared on the diet containing the leaves of the susceptible check TN 1.

Antixenosis component of resistance to corn planthopper, Peregrinus maidis (Ashm.) was investigated in 10 selected sorghum genotypes at three plant growth stages (30,45 and 60 DAG) under laboratory and field (rainy and postrainy seasons) conditions. In a free-choice test, the orientationa) and settling responses of nymphs and brachypterous adults on all genotypes although influenced by the olfactory and visual responses, then- feeding was notsustained due to gustatory stimuli indicating their significant role in determining the degreeof antlxenosis. The genotypes IS 18676, IS 19349 and IS 18677 showed a high degree of antixenosls in settling fewer nymphs and adults consistently at 30,45 and 60 DAG. This finding was supported with low colonization of nymphs, and brachypterous and macropterous adults under field conditions. In addition, high degree of antixenosis for oviposition in both laboratory and field tests was evidenced on IS 18676 and IS 19349 at 30,45 and 60 DAG, but on SPV 472 and SPV 475 only at specific plant growth stages. The variability in the rate of adult colonization together with suitability of plant growth stages for oviposition has contributed to variable degrees of antixenosis for oviposition.

Stability of resistance to corn planthopper, Peregrinus maid is (Ashmead), was studied over three plant growth stages in 56 sorghum germplasm accessions. Genotype x stage interactions were significant. Plant age exerted a profound influence on the rate of oviposition, establishment of nymph, macropterous and brachypterous adult populations and plant damage. Resistance to corn planthopper was stable over three growth stages in IS 18557, IS 18677 and PJ 8K(R), which also supported low colonization of nymph and adult populations; IS 12308 was unstable due to high deviation. Significantly low rate of oviposition on resistant as compared to susceptible genotypes and the positive and significant correlation between oviposition and plant damage illustrated that antixenosis for oviposition is the primary mechanism of resistance. As a consequence the genotypes preferred for oviposition showed susceptibility due to higher plant damage. Establishment of nymphs was affected on the genotypes, IS 1054, IS 1082, IS 2194, IS 3992, IS 12308, IS 18676 and IS 19349 which may be due to the factors involved either in reduced hatchability of eggs and/or deterrence or poor feeding preference of nymphs.

Four soybean genotypes, PI 227687, PI 229358, Davis and Hardee were tested for their antixenosis and antibiosis to the soybean hairy caterpillar, Spilarctia casignata Koll. PI 227687 and PI 229358 showed greater antixenosis and strong antibiosis (high larval and pupal mortalities, reduced pupal weight, and a low growth index). Davis and Hardee were the favoured hosts as indicated by high larval preference based on increased feeding and low larval and pupal mortalities, increased pupal weight and a high growth index.
