This paper gives a self-contained proof of the non-existence of nontrivial bi-infinite geodesics in directed planar last-passage percolation with exponential weights. The techniques used are couplings, coarse graining, and control of geodesics through planarity and estimates derived from increment-stationary versions of the last-passage percolation process.

In this article, the existence of heteroclinic solution of a class of generalized Hamiltonian system with potential $V : {\open R}^{n} \longmapsto {\open R}$ having a finite or infinite number of global minima is studied. Examples include systems involving the p-Laplacian operator, the curvature operator and the relativistic operator. Generalized conservation of energy is established, which leads to the property of equipartition of energy enjoyed by heteroclinic solutions. The existence problem of heteroclinic solution is studied using both variational method and the metric method. The variational approach is classical, while the metric method represents a more geometrical point of view where the existence problem of heteroclinic solution is reduced to that of geodesic in a proper length metric space. Regularities of the heteroclinic solutions are discussed. The results here not only provide alternative solution methods for Φ-Laplacian systems, but also improve existing results for the classical Hamiltonian system. In particular, the conditions imposed upon the potential are very mild and new proof for the compactness is given. Finally in ℝ2, heteroclinic solutions are explicitly written down in closed form by using complex function theory.

This paper constitutes a comprehensive study of ten classes of self-maps on metric spaces $\langle X\,,\,d\rangle $ with the pointwise (i.e., local radial) and local contraction properties. Each of these classes appeared previously in the literature in the context of fixed point theorems.

We begin with an overview of these fixed point results, including concise self contained sketches of their proofs. Then we proceed with a discussion of the relations among the ten classes of self-maps with domains $\langle X\,,\,d\rangle $ having various topological properties that often appear in the theory of fixed point theorems: completeness, compactness, (path) connectedness, rectifiable-path connectedness, and $d$-convexity. The bulk of the results presented in this part consists of examples of maps that show non-reversibility of the previously established inclusions between these classes. Among these examples, the most striking is a differentiable auto-homeomorphism $f$ of a compact perfect subset $X$ of $\mathbb{R}$ with ${{f}^{'}}\,\equiv \,0$, which constitutes also a minimal dynamical system. We finish by discussing a few remaining open problems on whether the maps with specific pointwise contraction properties must have the fixed points.

Let AT(Δ) be the asymptotic universal Teichmüller space, viewed as the space of all asymptotic Teichmüller equivalence classes [[μ]]. We show that if μ is asymptotically extremal in AT(Δ) and hp([[μ]]) < h([[μ]]) for some boundary point p of Δ, then there are infinitely many geodesics joining [[0]] and [[μ]] in AT(Δ). As a corollary, a necessary condition for a complex dilatation to be uniquely extremal in AT(Δ) is given.

An innovative algorithm to determine the inverse solution of a geodesic with the vertex or Clairaut constant located between two points on a spheroid is presented. This solution to the inverse problem will be useful for solving problems in navigation as well as geodesy. The algorithm to be described derives from a series expansion that replaces integrals for distance and longitude, while avoiding reliance on trigonometric functions. In addition, these series expansions are economical in terms of computational cost. For end points located at each side of a vertex, certain numerical difficulties arise. A finite difference method together with an innovative method of iteration that approximates Newton's method is presented which overcomes these shortcomings encountered for nearly antipodal regions. The method provided here, which does not involve an auxiliary sphere, was aided by the Computer Algebra System (CAS) that can yield arbitrarily truncated series suitable to the users accuracy objectives and which are limited only by machine precisions.

In this paper we study left invariant Einstein–Randers metrics on compact Lie groups. First, we give a method to construct left invariant non-Riemannian Einstein–Randers metrics on a compact Lie group, using the Zermelo navigation data. Then we prove that this gives a complete classification of left invariant Einstein–Randers metrics on compact simple Lie groups with the underlying Riemannian metric naturally reductive. Further, we completely determine the identity component of the group of isometries for this type of metrics on simple groups. Finally, we study some geometric properties of such metrics. In particular, we give the formulae of geodesics and flag curvature of such metrics.

We find approximate solutions (chord–arc curves) for the system of equations of geodesics in Ω∩ℍ for every Denjoy domain Ω, with respect to both the Poincaré and the quasi-hyperbolic metrics. We also prove that these chord–arc curves are uniformly close to the geodesics. As an application of these results, we obtain good estimates for the lengths of simple closed geodesics in any Denjoy domain, and we improve the characterization in a 1999 work by Alvarez et al. on Denjoy domains satisfying the linear isoperimetric inequality.

An analytical method and algorithm for great elliptic sailing (GES) calculations is presented. The method solves the complete GES problem calculating not only the great elliptic arc distance, but also other elements of the sailing such as the geodetic coordinates of intermediate points along the great elliptic arc. The proposed formulas provide extremely high accuracies and are straightforward to be exploited immediately in the development of navigational software, without the requirement to use advanced numerical methods. Their validity and effectiveness have been verified with numerical tests and comparisons to extremely accurate geodetic methods for the direct and inverse geodetic problem.

Traditionally, on a great circle, the latitude or longitude of a waypoint is found by inspection. In this paper, using an elementary knowledge of vector algebra including linear combination of vectors and vector basis, we provide an easy method for finding the equation of a great circle path as a parameterized curve. By use of this vector function of distance travelled, the latitude and longitude of waypoints can be found based on the distance from departure point along a great circle. The approach is intended to appeal to the navigator who is interested in the mathematics of navigation and who, nowadays, solves his navigation problems with a personal computer.

Classical principal component analysis on manifolds, for example on Kendall's shape spaces, is carried out in the tangent space of a Euclidean mean equipped with a Euclidean metric. We propose a method of principal component analysis for Riemannian manifolds based on geodesics of the intrinsic metric, and provide a numerical implementation in the case of spheres. This method allows us, for example, to compare principal component geodesics of different data samples. In order to determine principal component geodesics, we show that in general, owing to curvature, the principal component geodesics do not pass through the intrinsic mean. As a consequence, means other than the intrinsic mean are considered, allowing for several choices of definition of geodesic variance. In conclusion we apply our method to the space of planar triangular shapes and compare our findings with those of standard Euclidean principal component analysis.

The Heisenberg group is considered as the boundary of a manifold. A class of hypersurfaces in this manifold can be regarded as copies of the Heisenberg group. The properties of geodesics in the interior and on the hypersurfaces are worked out in detail. These properties are strongly related to those of the Heisenberg group.

We introduce an invariant, called the contact number, associated with each Euclidean submanifold. We show that this invariant is, surprisingly, closely related to the notions of isotropic submanifolds and holomorphic curves. We are able to establish a simple criterion for a submanifold to have any given contact number. Moreover, we completely classify codimension-$2$ submanifolds with contact number ${\geq}3$. We also study surfaces in $\mathbb{E}^6$ with contact number ${\geq}4$. As an immediate consequence, we obtain the first explicit examples of non-spherical pseudo-umbilical surfaces in Euclidean spaces.
