We study reflexivity and structural properties of operator algebras generated by representations of the discrete Heisenberg semigroup. We show that the left regular representation of this semigroup gives rise to a semi-simple reflexive algebra. We exhibit an example of a representation that gives rise to a non-reflexive algebra. En route, we establish reflexivity results for subspaces of .

The level l Fock space admits canonical bases and . They correspond to and -module structures. We establish that the transition matrices relating these two bases are unitriangular with coefficients in ℕ[v]. Restriction to the highest-weight modules generated by the empty l-partition then gives a natural quantization of a theorem by Geck and Rouquier on the factorization of decomposition matrices which are associated to Ariki–Koike algebras.

We show that the flow generated by the totally competitive planar Lotka–Volterra equations deforms the line connecting the two axial equilibria into convex or concave curves, and that these curves remain convex or concave for all subsequent time. We apply the observation to provide an alternative proof to that given by Tineo in 2001 that the carrying simplex, the globally attracting invariant manifold that joins the axial equilibria, is either convex, concave or a straight-line segment.

For impulsive differential equations, we construct topological conjugacies between linear and nonlinear perturbations of non-uniform exponential dichotomies. In the case of linear perturbations, the topological conjugacies are constructed in a more or less explicit manner. In the nonlinear case, we obtain an appropriate version of the Grobman–Hartman Theorem for impulsive equations, with a simple and direct proof that involves no discretization of the dynamics.

We introduce the one-sided local maximal operator and study its connection to the one-sided Ap conditions. We get a new characterization of the boundedness of the one-sided maximal operator on a quasi-Banach function space. We obtain applications to weighted Lebesgue spaces and variable-exponent Lebesgue spaces.

We show that spaces of Colombeau generalized functions with smooth parameter dependence are isomorphic to those with continuous parametrization. Based on this result we initiate a systematic study of algebraic properties of the ring of generalized numbers in this unified setting. In particular, we investigate the ring and order structure of and establish some properties of its ideals.

In the spectrum of the algebra of symmetric analytic functions of bounded type on ℓp, 1 ≤ p < +∞, and along the same lines as the general non-symmetric case, we define and study a convolution operation and give a formula for the ‘radius’ function. It is also proved that the algebra of analytic functions of bounded type on ℓ1 is isometrically isomorphic to an algebra of symmetric analytic functions on a polydisc of ℓ1. We also consider the existence of algebraic projections between algebras of symmetric polynomials and the corresponding subspace of subsymmetric polynomials.

Suppose G is a p-solvable group, where p is odd. We explore the connection between lifts of Brauer characters of G and certain local objects in G, called vertex pairs. We show that if χ is a lift, then the vertex pairs of χ form a single conjugacy class. We use this to prove a sufficient condition for a given pair to be a vertex pair of a lift and to study the behaviour of lifts with respect to normal subgroups.

We study the biharmonic equation Δ2u = u−α, 0 < α < 1, in a smooth and bounded domain Ω ⊂ ℝn, n ≥ 2, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions. Under some suitable assumptions on Ω related to the positivity of the Green function for the biharmonic operator, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a solution.

We show that if τ0 is an imaginary quadratic argument and m is an odd integer, then is an algebraic integer dividing This is a generalization of a result of Berndt, Chan and Zhang. On the other hand, when K is an imaginary quadratic field and θK is an element of K with Im(θK) > 0 which generates the ring of integers of K over ℤ, we find a sufficient condition on m which ensures that is a unit.

We consider a class of critical quasilinear problems

where 0 ∈ Ω ⊂ ℝN, N ≥ 3, is a bounded domain and 1 < p < N, a < N/p, a ≤ b < a + 1, λ is a positive parameter, 0 ≤ μ < ≡ ((N − p)/p − a)p, q = q*(a, b) ≡ Np/[N − pd] and d ≡ a+1 − b. Infinitely many small solutions are obtained by using a version of the symmetric Mountain Pass Theorem and a variant of the concentration-compactness principle. We deal with a problem that extends some results involving singularities not only in the nonlinearities but also in the operator.

In this paper, using the Schauder Fixed Point Theorem and the Vidossich Theorem, we study the existence of solutions and the structure of the set of solutions of the Darboux problem involving the distributional Henstock–Kurzweil integral. The two theorems presented in this paper are extensions of the previous results of Deblasi and Myjak and of Bugajewski and Szufla.

An AF-algebra is assigned to each cusp form f of weight 2; we study properties of this operator algebra when f is a Hecke eigenform.

In this work we study the following class of elliptic systems:

where Ω ⊂ ℝ2 is a smooth bounded domain, H is a C1 function in [0, +∞)×[0, +∞) which is assumed to be in the critical growth range of Trudinger–Moser type and f1, f2 ∈ Lr (Ω), r > 2. Under suitable hypotheses on the functions a, b, c ∈ C( and using variational methods, we prove the existence of two solutions depending on f1 and f2.

We find approximate solutions (chord–arc curves) for the system of equations of geodesics in Ω∩ℍ for every Denjoy domain Ω, with respect to both the Poincaré and the quasi-hyperbolic metrics. We also prove that these chord–arc curves are uniformly close to the geodesics. As an application of these results, we obtain good estimates for the lengths of simple closed geodesics in any Denjoy domain, and we improve the characterization in a 1999 work by Alvarez et al. on Denjoy domains satisfying the linear isoperimetric inequality.
