In this article, we calculate the Birkhoff spectrum in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of level sets for Birkhoff averages of continuous potentials for a certain family of diagonally affine iterated function systems. Also, we study Besicovitch–Eggleston sets for finite generalized Lüroth series number systems with redundancy. The redundancy refers to the fact that each number $x \in [0,1]$ has uncountably many expansions in the system. We determine the Hausdorff dimension of digit frequency sets for such expansions along fibres.
For a class of volume-preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms (or non-uniformly Anosov) $f\colon {\mathbb {T}}^d\rightarrow {\mathbb {T}}^d$ homotopic to linear Anosov automorphism, we show that the sum of the positive (negative) Lyapunov exponents of f is bounded above (respectively below) by the sum of the positive (respectively negative) Lyapunov exponents of its linearization. We show this for some classes of derived from Anosov (DA) and non-uniformly hyperbolic systems with dominated splitting, in particular for examples described by Bonatti and Viana [SRB measures for partially hyperbolic systems whose central direction is mostly contracting. Israel J. Math.115(1) (2000), 157–193]. The results in this paper address a flexibility program by Bochi, Katok and Rodriguez Hertz [Flexibility of Lyapunov exponents. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys.42(2) (2022), 554–591].
We consider orthogonally invariant probability measures on $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n(\mathbb {R})$ and compare the mean of the logs of the moduli of eigenvalues of the matrices with the Lyapunov exponents of random matrix products independently drawn with respect to the measure. We give a lower bound for the former in terms of the latter. The results are motivated by Dedieu and Shub [On random and mean exponents for unitarily invariant probability measures on $\operatorname {\mathrm {GL}}_n(\mathbb {C})$. Astérisque287 (2003), xvii, 1–18]. A novel feature of our treatment is the use of the theory of spherical polynomials in the proof of our main result.
Several authors have shown that Kusuoka’s measure κ on fractals is a scalar Gibbs measure; in particular, it maximizes a pressure. There is also a different approach, in which one defines a matrix-valued Gibbs measure µ, which induces both Kusuoka’s measure κ and Kusuoka’s bilinear form. In the first part of the paper, we show that one can define a ‘pressure’ for matrix-valued measures; this pressure is maximized by µ. In the second part, we use the matrix-valued Gibbs measure µ to count periodic orbits on fractals, weighted by their Lyapounov exponents.
We extend Katok’s result on ‘the approximation of hyperbolic measures by horseshoes’ to Banach cocycles. More precisely, let f be a $C^r(r>1)$ diffeomorphism of a compact Riemannian manifold M, preserving an ergodic hyperbolic measure $\mu $ with positive entropy, and let $\mathcal {A}$ be a Hölder continuous cocycle of bounded linear operators acting on a Banach space $\mathfrak {X}$. We prove that there is a sequence of horseshoes for f and dominated splittings for $\mathcal {A}$ on the horseshoes, such that not only the measure theoretic entropy of f but also the Lyapunov exponents of $\mathcal {A}$ with respect to $\mu $ can be approximated by the topological entropy of f and the Lyapunov exponents of $\mathcal {A}$ on the horseshoes, respectively. As an application, we show the continuity of sub-additive topological pressure for Banach cocycles.
For typical cocycles over subshifts of finite type, we show that for any given orbit segment, we can construct a periodic orbit such that it shadows the given orbit segment and that the product of the cocycle along its orbit is a proximal linear map. Using this result, we show that suitable assumptions on the periodic orbits have consequences over the entire subshift.
For
$k \geq 2$
, we prove that in a
$C^{1}$
-open and
$C^{k}$
-dense set of some classes of
$C^{k}$
-Anosov flows, all Lyapunov exponents have multiplicity one with respect to appropriate measures. The classes are geodesic flows with equilibrium states of Holder-continuous potentials, volume-preserving flows, and all fiber-bunched Anosov flows with equilibrium states of Holder-continuous potentials.
Consider a component
${\cal Q}$
of a stratum in the moduli space of area-one abelian differentials on a surface of genus g. Call a property
${\cal P}$
for periodic orbits of the Teichmüller flow on
${\cal Q}$
typical if the growth rate of orbits with property
${\cal P}$
is maximal. We show that the following property is typical. Given a continuous integrable cocycle over the Teichmüller flow with values in a vector bundle
$V\to {\cal Q}$
, the logarithms of the eigenvalues of the matrix defined by the cocycle and the orbit are arbitrarily close to the Lyapunov exponents of the cocycle for the Masur–Veech measure.
We construct an invariant measure for a piecewise analytic interval map whose Lyapunov exponent is not defined. Moreover, for a set of full measure, the pointwise Lyapunov exponent is not defined. This map has a Lorenz-like singularity and non-flat critical points.
for
$A\in \operatorname {SL}_N$
,
$\mathbf {b}\in \mathbb {A}^N$
, and
$d\geq 2$
, a class which specializes to the unicritical polynomials when
$N=1$
. In the case
$k=\mathbb {C}$
we obtain lower bounds on the sum of Lyapunov exponents of f, and a statement which generalizes the compactness of the Mandelbrot set. Over
$\overline {\mathbb {Q}}$
we obtain estimates on the critical height of f, and over algebraically closed fields we obtain some rigidity results for post-critically finite morphisms of this form.
We outline the flexibility program in smooth dynamics, focusing on flexibility of Lyapunov exponents for volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. We prove flexibility results for Anosov diffeomorphisms admitting dominated splittings into one-dimensional bundles.
We extend the results of Hasselblatt and Schmeling [Dimension product structure of hyperbolic sets. Modern Dynamical Systems and Applications. Eds. B. Hasselblatt, M. Brin and Y. Pesin. Cambridge University Press, New York, 2004, pp. 331–345] and of Rams and Simon [Hausdorff and packing measure for solenoids. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys.23 (2003), 273–292] for
$C^{1+\varepsilon }$
hyperbolic, (partially) linear solenoids
$\Lambda $
over the circle embedded in
$\mathbb {R}^3$
non-conformally attracting in the stable discs
$W^s$
direction, to nonlinear solenoids. Under the assumptions of transversality and on the Lyapunov exponents for an appropriate Gibbs measure imposing thinness, as well as the assumption that there is an invariant
$C^{1+\varepsilon }$
strong stable foliation, we prove that Hausdorff dimension
$\operatorname {\mathrm {HD}}(\Lambda \cap W^s)$
is the same quantity
$t_0$
for all
$W^s$
and else
$\mathrm {HD}(\Lambda )=t_0+1$
. We prove also that for the packing measure,
$0<\Pi _{t_0}(\Lambda \cap W^s)<\infty $
, but for Hausdorff measure,
$\mathrm {HM}_{t_0}(\Lambda \cap W^s)=0$
for all
$W^s$
. Also
$0<\Pi _{1+t_0}(\Lambda ) <\infty $
and
$\mathrm {HM}_{1+t_0}(\Lambda )=0$
. A technical part says that the holonomy along unstable foliation is locally Lipschitz, except for a set of unstable leaves whose intersection with every
$W^s$
has measure
$\mathrm {HM}_{t_0}$
equal to 0 and even Hausdorff dimension less than
$t_0$
. The latter holds due to a large deviations phenomenon.
We consider a smooth area-preserving Anosov diffeomorphism
$f\colon \mathbb T^2\rightarrow \mathbb T^2$
homotopic to an Anosov automorphism L of
$\mathbb T^2$
. It is known that the positive Lyapunov exponent of f with respect to the normalized Lebesgue measure is less than or equal to the topological entropy of L, which, in addition, is less than or equal to the Lyapunov exponent of f with respect to the probability measure of maximal entropy. Moreover, the equalities only occur simultaneously. We show that these are the only restrictions on these two dynamical invariants.
We consider products of an independent and identically distributed sequence in a set
$\{f_1,\ldots ,f_m\}$
of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle. We can naturally associate a Lyapunov exponent
$\lambda $
. Under few assumptions, it is known that
$\lambda \leq 0$
and that the equality holds if and only if
$f_1,\ldots ,f_m$
are simultaneously conjugated to rotations. In this paper, we state a quantitative version of this fact in the case where
$f_1,\ldots ,f_m$
are
$C^k$
perturbations of rotations with rotation numbers
$\rho (f_1),\ldots ,\rho (f_m)$
satisfying a simultaneous diophantine condition in the sense of Moser [On commuting circle mappings and simultaneous diophantine approximations. Math. Z.205(1) (1990), 105–121]: we give a precise estimate of
$\lambda $
(Taylor expansion) and we prove that there exist a diffeomorphism g and rotations
$r_i$
such that
$\mbox {dist}(gf_ig^{-1},r_i)\ll |\lambda |^{{1}/{2}}$
for
$i=1,\ldots , m$
. We also state analogous results for random products of
$2\times 2$
matrices, without any diophantine condition.
We construct an example of a Hamiltonian flow
$f^t$
on a four-dimensional smooth manifold
$\mathcal {M}$
which after being restricted to an energy surface
$\mathcal {M}_e$
demonstrates essential coexistence of regular and chaotic dynamics, that is, there is an open and dense
$f^t$
-invariant subset
$U\subset \mathcal {M}_e$
such that the restriction
$f^t|U$
has non-zero Lyapunov exponents in all directions (except for the direction of the flow) and is a Bernoulli flow while, on the boundary
$\partial U$
, which has positive volume, all Lyapunov exponents of the system are zero.
Let f be a
$C^2$
diffeomorphism on a compact manifold. Ledrappier and Young introduced entropies along unstable foliations for an ergodic measure
$\mu $
. We relate those entropies to covering numbers in order to give a new upper bound on the metric entropy of
$\mu $
in terms of Lyapunov exponents and topological entropy or volume growth of sub-manifolds. We also discuss extensions to the
$C^{1+\alpha },\,\alpha>0$
, case.
We provide conditions that imply the continuity of the Lyapunov exponents for non-uniformly fiber-bunched cocycles in
$SL(2,\mathbb {R})$
. The main theorem is an extension of the result of Backes, Brown and Butler and gives a partial answer to a conjecture of Marcelo Viana.
We address the problem of defining Lyapunov exponents for an expansive homeomorphism f on a compact metric space (X, dist) using similar techniques as those developed in Barreira and Silva [Lyapunov exponents for continuous transformations and dimension theory, Discrete Contin. Dynam. Sys.13 (2005), 469–490]; Kifer [Characteristic exponents of dynamical systems in metric spaces, Ergod. Th. Dynam. Sys.3 (1983), 119–127]. Under certain conditions on the topology of the space X where f acts we obtain that there is a metric D defining the topology of X such that the Lyapunov exponents of f are different from zero with respect to D for every point x ∈ X. We give an example showing that this may not be true with respect to the original metric dist. But expansiveness of f ensures that Lyapunov exponents do not vanish on a Gδ subset of X with respect to any metric defining the topology of X. We define Lyapunov exponents on compact invariant sets of Peano spaces and prove that if the maximal exponent on the compact set is negative then the compact is an attractor.
We study C1-robustly transitive and nonhyperbolic diffeomorphisms having a partially hyperbolic splitting with one-dimensional central bundle whose strong un-/stable foliations are both minimal. In dimension 3, an important class of examples of such systems is given by those with a simple closed periodic curve tangent to the central bundle. We prove that there is a C1-open and dense subset of such diffeomorphisms such that every nonhyperbolic ergodic measure (i.e. with zero central exponent) can be approximated in the weak* topology and in entropy by measures supported in basic sets with positive (negative) central Lyapunov exponent. Our method also allows to show how entropy changes across measures with central Lyapunov exponent close to zero. We also prove that any nonhyperbolic ergodic measure is in the intersection of the convex hulls of the measures with positive central exponent and with negative central exponent.
The Kuramoto–Sivashinsky equation is a prototypical chaotic nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) in which the size of the spatial domain plays the role of a bifurcation parameter. We investigate the changing dynamics of the Kuramoto–Sivashinsky PDE by calculating the Lyapunov spectra over a large range of domain sizes. Our comprehensive computation and analysis of the Lyapunov exponents and the associated Kaplan–Yorke dimension provides new insights into the chaotic dynamics of the Kuramoto–Sivashinsky PDE, and the transition to its one-dimensional turbulence.
