The engraved slate plaques were part of an extensive and variable class of ritual objects in Late Neolithic and Copper Age Iberia, with Classic plaques being the most numerous and standardized type. Classic plaques have a top and base separated by a horizontal line or bands, and base registers of repeating design elements (triangles, checkerboard, etc.). Associated with burials, they have been interpreted as genealogical records, with their base design referencing a clan or other social unit and their number of registers denoting the generational distance of the deceased from an important ancestor. The authors evaluate the genealogical hypothesis using a larger dataset than available when originally proposed, employing statistical analyses to examine the relationship between the number of registers and find locations, and between design elements and tomb size. Tomb size is viewed as a measure of collective labour, and hence a proxy of the status of the individuals in the tomb. These analyses show significant patterning between the number of registers and the plaques’ geographic distribution, and between specific design elements and tomb size, suggesting that the genealogical hypothesis remains a plausible explanation for the Classic plaques.

Online interventions for older adults should be tailored to their unique needs to increase the efficacy of and adherence to the intervention. The agile development cycle is a dynamic model to solicit and incorporate feedback from older adults during the design process. We combined this approach with the framework of Harvard University’s clinical and translational phases that provide a clear structure for evaluating new health programs before they are offered in the community. We based our online memory program on the empirically validated in-person Memory and Aging Program. The aim of the present study was to combine the agile development cycle with the clinical and translational phases framework to develop and pilot an online memory program tailored to the unique needs of older adults. Study 1 involved piloting individual program modules on site and integrating participant feedback into the program’s design to optimize usability. Study 2 involved two sequential pilots of the program accessed remotely to evaluate preliminary clinical outcomes and obtain feedback for iterative modifications. Plans for further validation and limitations are discussed. The successful application of the agile development cycle implemented in this series of studies can be adapted by others seeking to offer online content for targeted end users.

La psychothérapie EMDR, comporte un protocole structuré faisant intervenir les différentes composantes de la mémoire : informations sensorielles, cognitives, émotionnelles et physiologiques ainsi que des stimulations bilatérales alternées [1]. Elle comporte également une évaluation continue de l’état psychique du patient. La psychothérapie EMDR a été soumise pendant plus de 25 ans aux processus d’évaluation et a atteint le plus haut niveau de validation scientifique pour le traitement des états de stress post-traumatiques (ESPT) (Inserm 2004, NICE 2006, WHO 2013). Cette psychothérapie comporte un protocole précis et rigoureux en 8 phases qui est centré sur le processus de traitement de mémoires physiologiquement stockées de façon non fonctionnelle dans des réseaux de mémoires inadaptés, à l’aide de stimulation bilatérales alternées. Les différentes phases du protocole intègrent aussi des éléments issus d’autres approches thérapeutiques. Lors des séances, le praticien cible un évènement précis perturbant du passé qui a toujours un impact négatif dans le présent et demande au patient de le recontacter un instant en imagination. Au cours des phases de retraitement du protocole (désensibilisation, installation, scanner du corps et, si nécessaire, réévaluation) le praticien fait intervenir des séquences de 30 secondes environ à une vitesse de 2 à 4 hertz par seconde de stimulations bilatérales alternées (oculaire, tactile ou auditive). Il a été démontré chez les patients ESPT et chez des témoins que les stimulations bilatérales alternées contribuent à la diminution du niveau d’affect et de la précision des éléments observés au cours du rappel du souvenir difficile. Le protocole inclut également des évaluations périodiques (VOC et SUD) de l’évolution de l’état psychique du patient pendant la séance. Le mécanisme neurobiologique impliqué dans cet effet est en relation avec les processus de mise en mémoire, rappel et de ré-encodage des souvenirs.

La psychothérapie EMDR a fait l’objet de 650 publications d’investigation clinique et d’études de mécanisme d’action des stimulations bilatérales alternées ainsi que de 6 méta-analyses. Vingt-cinq ans après l’établissement de ce protocole cette approche thérapeutique intégrative et structurée a obtenu le plus haut niveau de preuve d’efficacité dans L’ESPT. Elle est en cours d’évaluation pour d’autres troubles mentaux dans lesquels les mémoires d’expériences difficiles ont un effet important dans le déclenchement ou le maintien du trouble : anxiété, dépression, phobie, troubles alimentaires ou sexuels, schizophrénie etc. On peut constater que cette approche thérapeutique suit les étapes et le rythme qui ont été nécessaires pour assurer l’évaluation et la validation d’autres types de thérapies.

La mémoire, encensée comme une vertu cardinale, n’a été appréhendée que dans ses troubles dans notre langage habituel. De l’enfance, où il n’est question que d’apprendre si possible par cœur, à la vieillesse où il n’est question que d’oublier pour plutôt de ne pas « imprimer », jamais on ne se pose la question des risques que fait courir à la vie psychique, à l’imagination et à la créativité, les répétitions que l’on s’impose ou que l’on impose sous forme de rituels plus ou moins intégrés. Jamais on ne se pose la question, qu’il est souvent indispensable et obligatoire d’oublier pour exister.

Est-il possible de résumer la mémoire ? Impossible de résumer tout le passé, la plus grande bibliothèque n’y suffirait pas. L’auteur a tenté dans cette communication de préciser quelques notions essentielles pour comprendre la complexité, l’ubiquité et le polymorphisme de la mémoire. Le choix de ces notions essentielles est arbitraire, est-il possible de faire autrement ? La mémoire est partout, sous de multiples avatars, et cela depuis la création du monde. Pourquoi ? Parce que la mémoire concerne l’infini…

Le rôle de l’oubli dans l’équilibre instable de la vie psychique et dans la construction des souvenirs individuels et collectifs apparaît essentiel. Le travail clinique s’organise tout autant sur les réminiscences qui font souffrir, le temps figé des traumatismes que sur l’amnésie. La question qui se pose alors d’un point de vue aussi bien neuroscientifique, psychanalytique que philosophique est de l’oubli nécessaire pour exister.

La notion d’intuition (du latin intuitio, désignant l’action de voir une image dans une glace) apparaît comme un mode de connaissance immédiat, préalable à la raison, qui prend la forme d’un sentiment d’évidence dont l’assurance est d’autant plus remarquable qu’il est souvent difficile d’en défendre la pertinence autrement que par des arguments circulaires. L’histoire de la philosophie nous montre l’intérêt des philosophes, notamment Spinoza et Bergson, pour cette notion qui, pour la plupart, est essentielle dans la connaissance. L’intuition, au niveau des mécanismes, est généralement perçue comme immédiate, c’est-à-dire sans médiation bien qu’elle puisse le plus souvent puiser sa pertinence dans des souvenirs enfouis dans l’inconscient ou le subconscient ce qui nous permet de réfléchir à sa place dans le champ des sciences, de la psychanalyse, et particulièrement dans la relation thérapeutique en référence à la clinique comme système symbolique complexe. À travers ces questionnements, nous pouvons avancer l’idée que l’intuition est peut être la propriété de la vie de se sentir elle-même.

L’intelligence artificielle est l’objet de nombreuses recherches, mais aussi de nombreux fantasmes. Elle vise à reproduire l’intelligence humaine dans ses capacités d’apprentissage, de stockage de connaissances et de calculs. Dans le domaine de l’ingénierie des connaissances, les premières représentations se sont largement inspirées des essais de modélisation de la mémoire sémantique. Cette dernière, composante de la mémoire à long terme, est la mémoire des mots, des idées, des concepts. C’est également le seul système de mémoire déclarative qui résiste de façon remarquable aux effets de l’âge. Des modifications cognitives non spécifiques peuvent diminuer les performances des sujets‚ âgés dans différentes épreuves et signalent plutôt des difficultés d’accès à des représentations sémantiques qu’une atteinte du stock sémantique lui-même. Certaines démences, avec au premier rang d’entre elle la démence sémantique, et dans un moindre mesure la maladie d’Alzheimer, se traduisent entre autre par une atteinte de la mémoire sémantique. Nous proposons dans cet article d’utiliser le modèle des ontologies computationnelles, modélisation formelle et relativement fine, au service de la neuropsychologie : pour le praticien dans des systèmes d’aide à la décision, pour le patient à titre de prothèse cognitive externalisée, et pour le chercheur afin d’étudier la mémoire sémantique.

L’objectif de cette étude était d’étudier l’effet implicite des émotions faciales à valence positive et négative sur l’encodage de l’identité chez des patients atteints de trouble bipolaire de type 1 en période d’euthymie (EBIP1). Vingt-huit EBIP1 et vingt-huit sujets sains (CRT) ont été inclus dans l’étude. Dans la condition d’encodage, des visages neutres, joyeux et tristes étaient présentés aux participants. Suite à une tâche distractrice, la condition de rappel était proposée avec des identités déjà vues lors de l’encodage et des identités nouvelles toutes présentées avec une expression neutre. Enfin, afin d’écarter des difficultés d’identification des émotions, ces mêmes participants devaient effectuer une tâche de reconnaissance explicite des expressions émotionnelles. Chez les CRT, le rappel est réduit pour les visages encodés avec une expression triste alors que chez les patients EBIP1, le rappel est réduit pour les visages exprimant la joie à l’encodage. En outre, seule la performance de rappel des visages joyeux est réduite chez les EBIP1 par rapport aux CRT. Les patients EBIP1 présentent donc un déficit de mémorisation pour les stimuli positifs, présent en période d’euthymie. Nous pouvons envisager que ces difficultés sont dues à une perturbation de processus cognitifs et émotionnels, en particulier à la mise en place de schémas cognitifs entraînant des troubles de la régulation des émotions positives. Ainsi, ce déficit pourrait constituer un facteur de vulnérabilité émotionnelle en contribuant à l’instauration ou au maintien de la symptomatologie affective. À ce titre, les processus de régulation des émotions dans le trouble bipolaire pourraient être une cible de traitement prometteuse afin d’améliorer la récupération à long terme et la résilience, en plus de promouvoir la diminution des symptômes aigus.

The main objective of this study was to present the development, validation and normalization of the Quebec Semantic Questionnaire (QueSQ). The QueSQ is a 12-item questionnaire designed for the rapid screening of semantic disorders. Psycholinguistic parameters that can influence performance, such as the nature of semantic features and superordinate semantic categories, were taken into account during its development. Psychometric qualities of QueSQ were demonstrated during the validation process. QueSQ normative data were established on the basis of age and level of education, from a sample of 100 Franco-Quebecers aged 50 years and over.

Power in sociological studies of memory is commonly understood as a function of political interests that are successfully framed as an inclusive and convincing story about selected elements of the past. By showing how negotiations of memory are driven by dynamics of symbolic exchange and by distinguishing techniques of narration emerging from this process, I develop a theoretical model that helps to better understand the locus of symbolic power in mnemonic agency. I consider the case of the plans surrounding a European history museum to show how persistent notions of cultural unity can be drafted in democratic societies.

This article explores a meshwork of citations to other material cultures and architectures created by the form and ornament of house-shaped early medieval recumbent stone monuments popularly known in Britain as ‘hogbacks’. In addition to citing the form and ornament of contemporary buildings, shrines, and tombs, this article suggests recumbent mortuary monuments referenced a far broader range of contemporary portable artefacts and architectures. The approach takes attention away from identifying any single source of origin for hogbacks. Instead, considering multi-scalar and multi-media references within the form and ornament of different carved stones provides the basis for revisiting their inherent variability and their commemorative efficacy by creating the sense of an inhabited mortuary space in which the dead are in dialogue with the living. By alluding to an entangled material world spanning Norse and Insular, ecclesiastical and secular spheres, hogbacks were versatile technologies of mortuary remembrance in the Viking Age.

Introducing the European Journal of Archaeology's special issue ‘Mortuary Citations: Death and Memory in the Viking World’, this article outlines the justification and theoretical framework underpinning a new set of studies on Viking-age mortuary and commemorative practice as strategies of mortuary citation. The contributions to the collection are reviewed in relation to strengths and weaknesses in existing research and broader themes in mortuary archaeological research into memory work in past societies.

Benzodiazepines are widely prescribed for anxiety, although use of this class of medications has been associated with dependency and cognitive changes. This article describes the study in which we investigated the relationship between the class of benzodiazepine available for use and associated performance on neuropsychological tests in a community sample of 1,754 older Canadians from the Canadian Study of Health and Aging. Benzodiazepines were classified as short-, intermediate-, and long-acting. Associations were calculated between each class of benzodiazepine and eight neuropsychological measures, using multiple regression analysis and controlling for demographic variables. Results showed different effects of the co-variates across the three drug classes, and short half-life benzodiazepines were not associated with any neuropsychological measure. Intermediate half-life and long half-life benzodiazepine use were each associated with two measures. Increased focus on specific domains of cognitive function is needed to improve our understanding of how benzodiazepine use influences cognition.

This paper assesses the applicability of modern notions of gender identity and individuality, and examines ‘relationality’ as a key dimension structuring social identity during the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Early Iron Age in western Iberia through a focus on funerary practices and stelae- and statue-menhir-making. It is argued that these practices were involved in the recollection of genealogical and mythical pasts. They entailed the creation of the dead and the ancestors as relational entities through the explicit inscription of graphic and spatial relations. Ultimately, these practices were structured by, and structured, shared understandings of the self and the roles of the deceased and the ancestors in social life—understandings in which ‘relationality’ played a seminal role.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada on Indian Residential Schools provides us with the opportunity to observe the process through which victims reconsider their place in the history of the state. The statements offered in this context put into relief the suffering and memories of assault and torture of children, to the detriment of a more complete and varied view of the origins, modes of operation, and consequences of these residential schools. By favoring the expression of a certain type of testimony, Canada’s TRC shapes many narratives of trauma, institutional crime, and national history. This essentialization of testimony leads us to question the ability of the TRC to effectively reveal the diversity and dynamics of the residential schools, the reasons for their establishment, the causes of the corruption of their goals, and the common features they might have with ongoing, enduring forms of abuse and institutional power.

Archaeology has been traditionally looked at as a science which reconstructs human history and evolution through the study of material objects. This contribution revisits archaeology as a discipline which revives national pasts, and thus partakes in generating myths of roots and identity. In the world ‘after Thor Heyerdahl' – plunged in environmental crisis and haunted by economic collapse of many communities – the hunger for these myths is bound to intensify. I argue that today, especially, there is a need for archaeology in ‘Thor Heyerdahls' ’ sense: one which would illuminate the unity of mankind and emphasize the imperative of reclaiming nature as human habitat.

Cet article examine un problème courant, soit la perte, totale ou partielle, des facultés chez les aînés, et donne quelques exemples fictifs de stratégies pour y faire face. La première partie du texte porte sur certains ouvrages traitant du désoeuvrement, notamment une nouvelle de Carol Bly intitulée «Gunnar's Sword,» et le roman de David Malouf An Imaginary Life. La seconde partie de cet essai compare deux romans récents décrivant le quotidien des aînés, soit Adele at the End of the Day, de Tom Marshall, et The Remains of the Day, de Kazuo Ishiguro. Tous les ouvrages examinés sont évalués selon leur contribution à la compréhension du vieillissement et leur succès sur le plan littéraire.

A review of the literature shows that only a weak connection exists between objective memory tests and self-evaluation memory questionnaires. The object of the present study was to explore which of the mnemonic, affective or psychosocial factors influence subjective evaluation of the memory function. This study is composed of a self-evaluation memory questionnaire, an ecologic-type objective memory evaluation, two affective state measures, anxiety and depression, and an inventory of life events. Sixty elderly persons took part in the study. They were divided into two groups, with attribution to a group depending on whether or not they considered themselves to have problems with memory Results supported the hypothesis that subjective and objective evaluations of memory comprise different components. Contrary to an objective test, self-evaluation of memory is strongly related to affect rather than being a perfect representation of actual mnemonic ability and this in spite of the ecological character of the memory test.

Age differences in verbal and spatial learning and information processing were tested using a verbal word list learning task and a spatial analogue of this task. Recall was assessed across five learning trials and the same measures of information processing and organization strategy were derived from both tasks. Normal subjects divided into three age groups of 24 subjects each were compared on these instruments. Significant age group differences were found for total recall averaged across trials and type of task (verbal vs. spatial). Age was not differentially related to verbal versus spatial learning and age groups did not show different patterns of recall across trials. Age was related to a clustering measure which assessed organization of information according to verbal semantic categories or inherent spatial clusters. Younger subjects showed increased levels of clustering on earlier learning trials. Similar effects were observed for the verbal and spatial clustering measures. Age was not related to differences in organization according to temporal order of presentation of information. Results show similar age-related changes in verbal and spatial learning and provide evidence that spatial learning, like verbal learning, is dependent upon effortful information processing.
