Space-borne passive microwave (PMW) data provide rich information on atmospheric state, including cloud structure and underlying surface properties. However, PMW data are sparse and limited due to low Earth orbit collection, resulting in coarse Earth system sampling. This study demonstrates that Bayesian deep learning (BDL) is a promising technique for predicting synthetic microwave (MW) data and its uncertainties from more ubiquitously available geostationary infrared observations. Our BDL models decompose predicted uncertainty into aleatoric (irreducible) and epistemic (reducible) components, providing insights into uncertainty origin and guiding model improvement. Low and high aleatoric uncertainty values are characteristic of clear sky and cloudy regions, respectively, suggesting that expanding the input feature vector to allow richer information content could improve model performance. The initially high average epistemic uncertainty metrics quantified by most models indicate that the training process would benefit from a greater data volume, leading to improved performance at most studied MW frequencies. Using quantified epistemic uncertainty to select the most useful additional training data (a training dataset size increase of 3.6%), the study reduced the mean absolute error and root mean squared error by 1.74% and 1.38%, respectively. The broader impact of this study is the demonstration of how predicted epistemic uncertainty can be used to select targeted training data. This allows for the curation of smaller, more optimized training datasets and also allows for future active learning studies.

Bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disrupting compound, is of concern because of its wide presence throughout the environment and its harmful effects. The present study aimed to prepare an eco-friendly, low-cost, and efficient adsorbent for removal of BPA from wastewater. A natural Tunisian clay was used as a raw material. First, the clay was purified and then modified with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA) using microwave heating. The optimal conditions for clay modification were as follows: activation ratio = 0.3:(g/g), solid/liquid ratio = 5%, and microwave heating condition (2:min, 100:W). The purified and modified clays, abbreviated as HP and HMH, respectively, were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis (BET). Adsorption tests were conducted in a batch reactor process under various conditions. The tests showed that the BET specific surface area of HMH is considerably smaller than that of HP, whereas the basal spacing increased from 14.99 to 22.07 Å after modification, indicating the success of HP organophilization. The adsorption of BPA onto HMH was not affected by the pH of solution between 2 and 10 and only slightly by temperature variation from 23 to 50°C, but was affected significantly by the initial concentration of BPA, contact time, and organo-clay dose. At equilibrium, the data obtained were fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich models. The best fit was obtained by the Langmuir model with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 217.39 mg/g at 23°C. The thermodynamic study suggested that the removal of BPA by HMH was spontaneous (ΔG < 0), exothermic (ΔH < 0), and favorable. The present study demonstrated that HMH synthesized from an abundant and cheap natural clay could be used successfully as a low-cost adsorbent for the removal of BPA from wastewater.

The ability to remove K rapidly with a solution containing sodium tetraphenylborate (NaTPB) from the interlayers of naturally-occurring phlogopite using a microwave-assisted technique has been examined. Samples were equilibrated with a 1.0 N sodium chloride (NaCl) – 0.2 N NaTPB – 0.01 M disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) solution at 60, 80 and 100°C under both conventional and microwave-assisted heating methods and for periods of time ranging from 1 to 3 h. The samples also underwent treatments of either continuous time periods or for successive treatments of 1 h with a washing step between each treatment.

Following sample treatment, the expansion of the c-axis value (d001) from 10.0 to 12.2 Å indicated the presence of hydrated Na ions in the phlogopite structure. Under most treatment conditions the 10.0 Å peak remained even after treatment due to incomplete K removal. Chemical analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that samples heated using microwave radiation exchanged their interlayer K for Na much more rapidly than under conventional heating for all treatment times and temperatures. The successive treatments also degraded the mica more rapidly than the continuous treatments. The greatest amount of K (95%) was removed when the mica was treated three times for 1 h at 60°C. The results suggest that successive treatments of phlogopite mica heated under microwave radiation will rapidly remove K from the mica. Decreasing the amount of time required to prepare K-depleted phlogopite micas will make these materials more appealing as ion exchangers for separation of Cs from nuclear wastes.

To achieve better accuracy in their investigations, biologists have recently been using three-dimensional models as intermediates between two-dimensional cell culture and the in vivo study of tissues. Some of these models are based on spheroids, which are cellular aggregates retaining many characteristics of in vivo behaviors while being still easy to use and implement in labs. To study such objects, multiple observation techniques can be used according to the objective of the study, including those using electromagnetic waves as nondestructive, noninvasive, and label-free analysis. Low-frequency (<1 MHz) ones are currently under investigation as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. However, unlike microwaves (from 300 MHz to 60 GHz), they cannot penetrate the cell. Furthermore, most of the devices dedicated to microwave dielectric characterization are only focusing on cellular scales lower than spheroids (single cell, cell mats, or suspensions) or on tissues and organs. In this article, a microwave spectroscopy device using a coplanar waveguide adapted to the study of spheroids is presented with the dielectric characterization of fixed spheroids, with capacitance and conductance measurements from 0.5 to 20 GHz, aiming at filling the scale gap in the state of the art.

In this paper, we propose a novel method for obtaining wideband spectral information of the target in microwave imaging systems by using broadband frequency reconfigurable printed transceivers. The proposed transceiver is composed of two embedded stacked microstrip antenna configurations operating in C-band (5.5–8.5 GHz) and X-band (8.5–11.5 GHz) with each having 3 GHz bandwidth. The transceiver switches between the two configurations (and thus frequency bands) using PIN diodes and collects response of the antenna in the presence of the target, in both the operating bands. This information is then combined to obtain wideband spectral information of the target from 5.5 to 11.5 GHz to achieve improved image reconstruction. The proposed reconfigurable transceiver has advantage over traditional broadband transceivers (those have slots/meandering at ground plane to achieve wideband response) that it has unidirectional radiation patterns throughout its band of operation. Hence the imaging system is implemented without the absorbers. This keeps the system compact and inconspicuous when installed for security applications. Here, a bistatic system is employed with two-dimensional target scanning performed in a real outdoor environment.

“The Other Kitchen Debate” places the history of the microwave oven in the context of Cold War anxieties and gender politics. Discrepancies between Soviet and U.S. safety standards, Soviet deployment of microwave espionage, and the prospect of nuclear war triggered fears about the possible dangers of kitchen appliances powered by low-level radiation. During the 1970s and early 1980s, politicians, government regulators, industry representatives, advertisers, home economists, media, and consumers engaged in lively debates over oven safety and the merits of microwave cookery. By the late eighties and early nineties, as East–West tensions waned and record numbers of American women entered the paid labor force, American media perceived fewer distinctions between the hazards posed by electronic ovens and those presented by their conventional counterparts. New definitions of safety redefined microwave ovens as purely domestic appliances, leaving questions about the potential risks of nonionizing radiation unresolved.

This study was carried out to investigate the efficacy of the non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma produced with dielectric barrier discharge (APPD) using air as a processing gas and microwave energy to control Tribolium castaneum and Trogoderma granarium adults and larvae in wheat grains. Insects’ mortality was found to be power and time-dependent. The results indicated that non-thermal APPD and the microwave have enough insecticidal effect on the target pests. From the bioassay, LT50's and LT90's levels were estimated, T. granarium larvae appeared more tolerant to non-thermal APPD and the microwave energy than adults 7 days post-exposure. The germination percentage of wheat grains increased as the time of exposure to the non-thermal APPD increased. On the contrary, the germination percentage of wheat grains decreased as the time of exposure to the microwave increased. In addition, changes in antioxidant enzyme activities, catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and peroxidase, in adults and larvae were examined after 24 h post-treatment to non-thermal APPD at 15.9 W power level, which caused 50% mortality. The activity of CAT, GST and lipid peroxide in the treated larvae showed a significant increase post-exposure to the non-thermal APPD at 15.9 W power level. On the other hand, no significant change in GSH-Px activity was observed. Reductions in the level of glutathione (GSH) and protein content occurred in treated larvae in comparison with the control.

Polylactic acid (PLA) filament 3D parts printed by fused deposition modeling (FDM) have poor mechanical properties because of weak fusion interfaces. This article shows that SiC-coated PLA filaments are effective means to increase mechanical performance of PLA composites that are microwave heated. Numerical calculations on temperature-rising characteristics and temperature distribution of the interface in the microwave field are shown. 3D-printed specimens of PLA/SiC composites were printed by FDM and heated in a microwave. The experiments show the SiC/PLA composite filaments have better temperature-rising characteristics and temperature distribution at 185 °C for 60 s in the microwave field, and this enabled the 3D-printed specimens to achieve in situ remelting on the interface and increased interface bonding between PLA filaments. The SiC/PLA composite specimens heated using microwave increased by 51% in tensile strength, 42% in tensile modulus, and 18.7% in interlayer breaking stress relative to PLA. These results provided a new approach for the improvement of FDM workpiece strength.

Advances in technology have seen mobile robots becoming a viable solution to many global challenges. A key limitation for tetherless operation, however, is the energy density of batteries. Whilst significant research is being undertaken into new battery technologies, wireless power transfer may be an alternative solution. The majority of the available technologies are not targeted toward the medium power requirements of mobile robots; they are either for low powers (a few Watts) or very large powers (kW). This paper reviews existing wireless power transfer technologies and their applications on mobile robots. The challenges of using these technologies on mobile robots include delivering the power required, system efficiency, human safety, transmission medium, and distance, all of which are analyzed for robots operating in a hazardous environment. The limitations of current wireless power technologies to meet the challenges for mobile robots are discussed and scenarios which current wireless power technologies can be used on mobile robots are presented.

Cornwall (UK) has suffered extensive arsenic contamination due to the historic mining and processing of mineral ores. Standard procedures for contaminated land risk assessment (DEFRA and Environment Agency, 2002a) are probably unworkable in Cornwall, with a very large number of sites classified as contaminated by arsenic. Methods of measuring the speciation and mobility of arsenic are essential for effective and rapid risk assessments of arsenic contamination.

Three clusters of lysimeters were installed in three different areas of an arsenic-contaminated Cornish site. A novel phosphoric acid microwave extraction technique was applied to the soils removed from the lysimeter holes; HPLC-HG-AFS analysis showed the majority of solid-phase arsenic to be arsenate (AsV). Pore waters obtained from the lysimeters showed variable, relatively low levels of arsenite (AsIII) and arsenate (AsV) to be present (<1–129 μg l–1). Less toxic arsenate predominated in most pore waters, with the presence of minor amounts of arsenite suggesting heterogeneous redox conditions. Pore-water arsenic concentrations were strongly positively related to solid-phase arsenate concentrations.

The use of techniques that assess the speciation of arsenic both in the solid and aqueous phases of a soil provides important information about the mobility of arsenic. The methodology presented in this paper may offer a novel basis for risk assessments of other contaminated sites.

This paper illustrates the different possibilities given by additive manufacturing technologies for the creation of passive microwave hardware. The paper more specifically highlights a prototyping scheme where the 3D-printed plastic parts can be used as initial proofs of concept before considering more advanced 3D-printed parts (metal parts, for instance). First, a characterization campaign has been made on common plastics used by a 3D printer using the fused deposition modeling and material jetting (Polyjet©) technologies. The impact of the manufacturing strategy (high-speed or high-accuracy) on the part roughness, as well as on the dielectric material permittivity and loss tangent, has been specifically studied at 10 and 16 GHz. Based on a specifically optimized and deeply explained characterization method, the conductivity of a coating based on silver paint has also been characterized on such plastic parts at 10 and 40 GHz. These plastic materials and coating have been used for the creation of quasi-elliptic and tuning-free bandpass filters centered at 6 and 12 GHz and compared with a similar filter made of stainless steel by selective laser melting. Finally, a compact rectangular TE10 to circular TE01 mode converter also undergoes one prototyping step out of plastic before moving to an advanced part made out of stainless steel. This mode converter, which is made in a single part, is designed to operate from 28 to 36 GHz as a tuning-free final demonstrator.

By using quasi-optical tools, it is possible to approximate microwave radiation to Gaussian beams, which enables the study of its propagation and coupling to different components. Hence, their usefulness for wireless power transfer and rapid system design. In this paper, a system composed of two reflectors is analyzed both theoretically and by discussing two cases where quasi-optical tools were applied. The near- and far-field regimes were considered and corresponding frequencies of operation, beam radius, and radius of curvature were computed.

Impedance tuners are key instruments used for load- and source–pull measurements. They are crucial for any active microwave components, circuits, and systems characterization and optimization. This paper reports theoretical, simulated, and experimental results related to the development of a novel programmable impedance tuner offering high-voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR). After presenting the proposed tuner principle, a fabricated prototype operating at microwave frequencies and based on a 3.5 mm coaxial line is introduced with experimental results. Depending on the targeted frequency band, different pairs of slugs, with optimized length and characteristic impedance, can be used to obtain an optimal VSWR. This first prototype allowed us to demonstrate the interest of the proposed impedance synthesis principle and to identify ways forward to further improve its performances and push forward this promising technology.

This paper presents a circuit architecture for a new integrated on chip test method for microwave circuits. The proposed built-in-self-test (BIST) cell targets a direct low-cost measurement technique of the gain and the 1 dB input compression point (CP1) of a K-band satellite receiver in the 18–22 GHz frequency bandwidth. A signal generator at the radiofrequency (RF) front end input of the device under test (DUT) has been integrated on the same chip. To inject this RF signal, a loopback technique has been used and the design has been accommodated for it. This paper focuses on the design of the most sensitive block of the BIST circuit, i.e. the RF signal generator. This circuit, fabricated in a SIGe:C BiCMOS process, consumes 10 mA. It presents a dynamic power range of 17 dB (−41; −24 dBm) and operates in a frequency range of 5.6 GHz (17.5; 23 GHz). This BIST circuit gives new perspectives in terms of test strategy, cost reduction, and measurement accuracy for microwave-integrated circuits and could be adapted for mm-wave circuits.

This study presents a NDT method using infrared thermography associated with a microwave excitation. The advantages of such stimulation lie in the volumic absorption of incoming waves which lead to a greater sounded depth. This method is applied to two types of samples. The first is a concrete slab reinforced with CFRP on which a bonding failure is inserted and the second is a wooden plate on which a metallic insert is placed on the back face. The device generating the microwaves is made of a commercial magnetron associated with a pyramidal horn antenna. An infrared camera is placed on the same side as the stimulated surface and thermograms are recorded at regular intervals. The whole assembly is placed in a protective room against high frequencies. The incident power density leads to heating of less than 1 °C of the surface of the samples. The thermograms show a higher temperature rise in front of the defect area. The non-uniformity of the beam, leads us to treat the thermograms with an algorithm of contrast. These first results show the interest of the microwave excitation to detect defects deeper than in the case of surface excitation.

We investigated the prominence eruptions and disappearances observed with the Nobeyama Radioheliograph during over 20 years for studying the anomaly of the recent solar cycle. Although the sunspot number of Cycle 24 is smaller than the previous one dramatically, the occurrence rate, size and radial velocity of the prominence activities are not changed significantly. We also found that the occurrence of the prominence activities in the northern hemisphere is normal from the duration of the cycle and the migration of the producing region of the prominence activities. On the other hand, the migration in the southern hemisphere significantly differs from that in the northern hemisphere and the previous cycles. Our results suggest that the anomalies of the global magnetic field distribution started at the solar maximum of Cycle 23.

Within the last decade, inkjet printing technology has developed from only a text and graphic industry to a major topic of scientific research and development. Inkjet printing can be used as a highly reproducible noncontact patterning technique to print at high speeds either small or large areas with high quality features; it requires only small amounts of functional materials, which immediately lower production costs. Furthermore, inkjet printing reduces the amount of processing steps due to its additive technique of materials deposition, which further decreases productions costs. This contribution provides a literature survey covering the latest results in low temperature sintering inkjet-printed metal precursor materials in a fast and efficient manner, aiming for roll-to-roll processing. The prepared features can be used as interconnects and contacts for microelectronic applications, including organic light-emitting diodes, organic photovoltaics, and radio frequency identification tags.

We examine the microwave reflection from the high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron system (2DES). Strong correlations have been observed between the microwave induced magnetoresistance oscillations and the microwave reflection oscillations in a concurrent measurement of the microwave illuminated magnetoresistance and the microwave reflection from the 2DES. The correlations were followed as a function of the microwave frequency and the microwave power dependent. Different existing theories are considered to explain the results.

This paper presents the development mechanism of surface plasmas of carbon-fiber-cathode electron beam source and its effects on the operation of a high-power microwave source, reflex triode vircator powered by about 400 kV, 9 kA, about 350 ns pulsed power accelerator. Based on the current and voltage characteristics of diodes using carbon fiber cathode, the axial expansion velocity is 1.2 cm/μs and the delay time of explosive emission is 2 ns. Further, the comparison of carbon fiber and stainless steel cathodes is made. It was found that the threshold electric field for carbon fiber cathode is about 25 kV/cm, and the delay time of explosive emission and threshold electric field for stainless steel cathode is, respectively, 4.5 ns and 40 kV/cm. The radial expansion velocity of individual emitting centers is estimated to be 1.2 cm/μs, equal to the axial expansion velocity, and this shows the cathode plasma spots spherically expand. In the optimal diode gap for microwave irradiation or at the average current density of 230 A/cm2 using carbon fiber cathode, the screening radius was 0.67 cm, the lifetime of cathode emitting centers was about 60 ns, the cathode plasma density was 5 × 1015 cm−3, and the Debye radius of cathode plasma was <3 × 10−5 cm−3. The self-quenching behavior of explosive emission centers occurs, due to the process of cathode surface material release and cooling. The generation and self-quenching of emitting centers, and screening effect of cathode plasmas determine the increase and decrease of cathode emitting area, which is independent of the current density and background pressure. The relation between the lifetime of virtual cathode and background pressure was discussed. It was found, both theoretically and experimentally, that a lower background pressure indicates a longer microwave pulse or a better microwave waveform. It was observed by comparison that the temporary behavior of cathode emitting area is similar to the development process of microwave pulse. The changes of emitting area affects the stability of beam current injected into the virtual cathode region, further leading to the fluctuation of microwave pulse of vircator.

A nonlinear circuit model (NCM) with physical parameters is proposed for direct simulation of the RF characteristics of GaN high-electron-mobility transistors (GaN HEMTs) on the basis of device structure. The physical equations are used for the construction of the model in order to connect strongly the model parameters with the device/physical parameters. Hyperbolic tangent functions are used as the model equations to ensure good model convergence and rapid simulation (short simulation time). The usefulness of these equations is confirmed by technology computer aided design (TCAD) simulation. The number of model parameters for the nonlinear components (Ids, Cgs, Cgd) is reduced to 17 by using common physical parameters for modeling the drain current and capacitance. The accuracy of this model is verified by applying to GaN HEMTs. The modeled I–V and capacitance characteristics agree well with the measurement data over a wide voltage range. Furthermore, this model can be used for the accurate evaluation of S-parameters and large-signal RF characteristics.
