Infrared spectra of two minerals; Urkut quartz (Hungary) and a Swedish feldspar, of different origin with different physical characteristics and crystallinity were studied. Samples were taken after appropriate grinding, and infrared spectra, X-ray powder diffraction and water vapor absorption measurements were made along with electronmicrographs. Quantitative conclusions were drawn from changes of particle size and the ratio of bands of the Si—O groups and also the degree of crystallinity and changes of the particle size, respectively.

Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) examination of the quartz isolated from chert of Transvaal and Swaziland, of 2000 and 3400 million year (MY) ages, respectively, in southern Africa revealed marked differences in quartz morphology. Well-defined individual euhedral quartz crystals, with polyhedral triple-point faces, were clearly evident on freshly fractured Transvaal chert surfaces as well as with the quartz isolates from the chert. The morphology and coarseness suggest crystal growth with little, if any, metamorphism; however, the δ18O values of 23.8–24.1‰ suggest crystallization temperatures of perhaps 40–45°C. In contrast, fracture surfaces of the older, strongly metamorphosed Swaziland cherts revealed a high degree of grain intergrowth which inhibited fracture between quartz grains. Quartz isolates from these showed strongly interlocked quartz crystal clusters and elongated chips of quartz with poorly defined irregular faces. Intercalation of mineral veins in the cherts on a mm scale and the intergrown character of the quartz grain boundaries provide evidence that the latter cherts have been strongly metamorphosed and recrystallized, in keeping with 14.6–15.1‰ δ18O values, corresponding to 80°C fractionation with water. The SEM micrographs of the fine quartz (1–10 µm) isolated from the Otavi dolomite formation of the 700-MY Damara System and from the 2000-MY Transvaal Dolomite Series revealed well-defined subhedral and euhedral quartz crystals of small size which, together with the 26.9–27.8‰ and 23.8‰ δ18O values, respectively, indicate that these dolomites have been affected little, if any, by post-depositional metamorphism; their crystallization temperatures fall in the range of 25–30 and 40–45°C, respectively.

The onset of the mobilization of fine particles of quartz (fines) in sandpacks was determined by comparing the theoretically calculated hydrodynamic and colloidal forces acting on a fines particle near a representative sand grain. The results show that the mobilization of fines depends strongly on the chemistry of fluids present in the reservoir. Specifically, a critical electrolyte concentration exists for mobilization, which depends on the pH. For large particles of fines and relatively high fluid velocity, the mobilization of fines may depend on the fluid velocity, but in a narrow range of electrolyte concentration. The types of interactions between the fines and sand grain surfaces were corroborated by direct visual observations using a traveling microcell pack.

The mobilization of fines in sandstones leads to a reduction of permeability (i.e., a reduction of the hydraulic conductivity).

Aqueous Al passes from octahedral to tetrahedral coordination over a narrow pH interval, or threshold. This interval is 5.5–6.5 at 25°C and shifts to lower pH as temperature increases. The concentration of aqueous tetrahedrally coordinated Al is a quasi-step function of the solution pH, and, by the mass-action law, so should be the amount of tetrahedral Al incorporated by a silicate that crystallizes from the aqueous solution. Qualitative support for this prediction (which applies to quartz, opal-CT, kaolin-group minerals, pyrophyllite, micas, chlorites, and other low-temperature silicates) comes from the very topology of equilibrium activity diagrams and from several pairs of associated waters and authigenic silicates from weathering, hydrothermal, and diagenetic environments. The uptake of tetrahedral Al also depends on the aqueous concentrations of monovalent cations and silica, and on the mineral's structural constraints.

Solid solution of tetrahedral Al in halloysite in turn produces the characteristic bent or tubular crystals of this mineral. This genetic link between aqueous chemistry (mainly pH), tetrahedral-Al uptake by a low-temperature silicate, and the mineral's crystal morphology may operate also in other silicates.

A mineralogical investigation by X-ray powder diffraction and optical, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy of partially weathered petrified wood in the Yegua Formation (Eocene) of east-central Texas revealed that microcrystalline quartz present in the unaltered petrified wood has been gradually dissolved and replaced by disordered silica polymorphs (mainly opal-CT) as a result of weathering. This replacement suggests that the reaction sequence: opal-A → opal-CT → quartz, which has been described elsewhere to occur during diagenetic alteration of petrified wood, is apparently reversed when the petrified wood is exposed to low-energy weathering conditions. The relatively high rate of dissolution of the quartz in the petrified wood appears to be related to its small crystallite size. The silica released by the dissolution of the quartz is subsequently reprecipitated as disordered cristobalite-tridymite (opal-CT) and poorly crystalline silica (opal-A) that, in turn, probably converts to opal-CT on aging. Opal-CT is the major silica phase in the completely altered powdery material enclosing the partially weathered petrified wood. The intermediate zone between the altered and unaltered zones contains both quartz and opal-CT.

The oxygen isotopes of albite, quartz, and zeolites from the Hokonui Hills, New Zealand, constrain crystallization temperatures and the type of pore fluids present during diagenesis. A section of altered vitric tuffs in this region contains an extremely sharp reaction boundary between a heulandite-chlorite assemblage containing fresh detrital plagioclase and a laumontite-albite-quartz assemblage. A laumontite vein follows the local joint pattern and forms the reaction boundary, suggesting that laumontitization occurred as a result of fracturing and increased fluid flow during uplift. The albite (δ18O = +15.0)-quartz (δ18O = +19.9 to +20.5) geothermometer constrains the temperature of alteration between 145° and 170°C with a pore water δ18O of +1.8 to +3.5. The tuff was buried to an estimated maximum temperature of about 225°C, indicating that alteration occurred after maximum burial.

Framework oxygen was extracted from zeolites by reaction with ClF3 after the zeolites were thermally dehydrated in a vacuum. Laumontite was dehydrated at 300°C, and stilbite at 150°C. The precision of the method is typically about ±0.45‰. Fractionation curves for dehydrated zeolites are based on a general expression from the literature for feldspars, which depends only on the Si/Al ratio of the mineral. Measured δ18O values for laumontite in the groundmass of the altered tuff were +14.4‰. The laumontite-quartz pair constrains the temperature to between 139° and 162°C, in excellent agreement with the albite-quartz pair, and supporting the petrographic observation of co-crystallizing albite-laumontite.

Oxygen isotope values for fracture-filling laumontite in the vitric tuff, as well as those for groundmass and vein laumontite from other parts of the stratigraphic section, cluster around +14.5, suggesting that laumontite probably crystallized under similar conditions throughout much of the section. Oxygen isotope values for stilbite veins from various parts of the section indicate that this mineral crystallized at lower temperatures than the laumontite, for a given fluid isotopic composition, in agreement with the observed cross-cutting of laumontite by stilbite.

Quantitative analysis of the smectite-to-illite and illite-to-muscovite transformations indicates that 17–28 wt.% SiO2 and 17–23 wt.% SiO2, respectively, are liberated during these reactions, assuming that Al is conserved. Dissolution of quartz silt in shales yields up to 6–9% SiO2 in the range up to 200°C and a further 10–15% SiO2 in the 200–500°C range. For muds altered to shales at 200°C, 14–20 wt.% silica is evolved. From 200 to 500°C, a further 18–28 wt.% silica is evolved. Additional small amounts of silica may be released in the alteration of feldspar to clay and by stylolitization of quartz silt. Thus, in the burial and temperature range of diagenesis into the epizone, major quantities of silica are released from clays and by quartz dissolution in shales. Within this range of alteration, concomitant decline of whole-rock Si/Al (SiO2/Al2O3) in the transformation of smectite to illite to muscovite suggests the liberated silica migrates from the source shale. As a result, the metamorphosed shales are more micaceous and less quartzose than their progenitor muds. In the diagenetic zone and anchizone, the evolved silica is probably a major source of quartz cement in sandstones. In the epizone, evolved silica is commonly present in quartz veins in the parent rocks. Fluid-inclusion temperatures in quartz overgrowths and fracture fillings in some sandstones suggest that some cements may have been derived from downdip basinal shales and pressure solution in sandstones.

In order to better understand the possible interactions between steel canisters and a claystone host rock, in this case the Callovo-Oxfordian rock (COx), the present study investigated in detail, under conditions relevant to high-level radioactive waste repositories (anoxic conditions, temperature of 90°C), the reactions between metallic iron and: (1) COx; (2) the clay fraction extracted from COx (CF); and (3) mixtures of CF with quartz, calcite, or pyrite. Batch experiments were then carried out in the presence of NaCl-CaCl2 background electrolyte, for durations of 1, 3, and 9 months. Solid and liquid end-products were characterized by a combination of techniques including liquid analyses, transmission and scanning electron microscopies, X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption at 77 K, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The interaction between CF and metallic iron appeared to proceed by means of pathways similar to those illustrated in previous studies on interactions between metallic iron and purified clays. In spite of the many similarities with previous studies, significant differences were observed between the behavior of COx and CF, particularly in terms of pH and Eh evolution, iron consumption, chemical composition of the neoformed particles, and textural evolution. Such differences demonstrate the important role played by non-clay minerals in reaction pathways. The addition of carbonates or pyrite to CF did not lead to significant change in reactivity. In contrast, under the conditions used in the present study, i.e. for relatively low iron:clay ratios, the presence of quartz strongly influenced reaction pathways. In the presence of quartz, magnetite was observed only in trace abundances whereas the amounts of magnetite were significant in experiments without quartz. Furthermore, filamentous serpentine particles with a small Al:Si ratio appeared which could develop from an FeSiAl gel that only forms in the presence of quartz. Considering that most clay rocks currently being considered for radioactive waste disposal contain significant amounts of quartz, the results obtained in the present study may be of significant interest for predicting the long-term behavior of clay barriers in such sites.

The objective of the present study was to determine the predominant minerals in sedimentary rocks using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and chemometric analysis. The chemometric analysis was performed on three types of sedimentary rock samples (claystones, clay slates, and sandstones), each with different predominant mineral components. Chemometric models were created to determine the major minerals of the rock samples studied — chlorite, muscovite, albite, and quartz. The FTIR spectra were obtained in transmission mode from pressed pellets of KBr-sample mixtures or by diffuse reflectance from hand-packed mixtures of samples with KBr. Spectral regions measured were 4000-3000 and 1300–400 cm-1, which contained important spectral information for the creation of the chemometric models. Principal component analysis was used in the chemometric method, with calibration models being created by a partial least-squares regression method. The mean relative error, standard error of prediction, and relative standard deviation were calculated for the assessment of accuracy, precision, and reproducibility. The value of the mean relative error was 15–20% for most of the calibration models; the value of the standard error of prediction was up to 6 w/w % for most of the calibration models. The values of the standard relative deviation ranged from ~2 to 8% for calibration models based on diffuse reflectance spectra whereas calibration models based on transmission spectra had values of relative standard deviation of ~15-20%.

This paper describes an improved simple, sample-mounting method for random powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), namely the razor tamped surface (RTS) method, which prepares a powder mount by tamping the loose powder with the sharp edge of a razor blade. Four kaolinites and a quartz powder were used to evaluate the RTS method by quantifying the degree of orientation in the sample mounts using orientation indices. Comparisons between the RTS and other published simple methods, consisting of front loading, back loading and side loading, indicate that the RTS method produces minimum packing density and minimum preferred orientation in the powder mounts of all five samples. The quartz powder used in this study does exhibit a tendency to preferred orientation. The mechanism by which the RTS method reduces preferred orientation is examined by comparing the width of the sharp blade edge with the size of clay particles. The advantages and disadvantages of the RTS method are also discussed.

The reactivity of colloidal particles is regulated by their surface properties. These properties affect the wettability, flocculation-dispersion characteristics, ion exchange, sorption capacities and transport of inorganic colloids. Most studies have focused on hydrophilic, charged-particle surfaces, often ignoring the alterations in surface properties produced by the adsorption of natural organic matter, surfactants and other compounds. Adsorption of these substances can potentially render a surface substantially more hydrophobic. Nevertheless, comparatively little is known about changes in surface properties and reactivity of minerals upon sorption of hydrophobic organic compounds. In this study, the properties of four minerals (kaolinite, pyrophyllite, montmorillonite and Min-U-Sil®) and two inorganic materials (X-ray amorphous Al hydroxide and X-ray amorphous Si oxide) were compared before and after treatment with the common silylating agent, trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS). The samples were characterized by measurements of total carbon, cation exchange capacity (CEC), particle size, specific surface area (SSA), electrophoretic mobility, contact angle, particle aggregation, and by X-ray diffraction and diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy. For the layer silicates, surface coverage was limited to ∼2% trimethyl silane (TMSi). TMSi covered 7.5% of the Min-U-Sil® surface and 33% of the X-ray amorphous Si oxide. Treatment did not affect the structure of the minerals but reduced the CEC, SSA and electrophoretic mobilities. Water contact angles increased to between 18 and 114° with treatment. While the apolar characteristic of the surfaces decreased minimally with treatment, the Lewis acid/base properties were substantially reduced and interfacial free energy shifted from positive to negative values indicating a more hydrophobic surface character. For all the samples except kaolinite, these changes affected the stability of the colloids in suspension depending upon solution pH. Although the grafting of TMSi altered colloidal mineral surface properties and increased their hydrophobicity, these changes were not sufficient to predict colloid aggregation behavior.

The Tso Morari Crystalline complex (TMCC) of eastern Ladakh, India, is part of the north Indian continental margin and is characterized by eclogitic enclaves embedded within ortho- and paragneisses known as the Puga Gneiss. Two fault zones bound the TMCC: the Karzok fault to the southwest and the Zildat fault to the northeast. In the present study, we carried out Electron Backscatter Diffraction study of quartz of 10 samples collected from the Puga Gneiss. The relict and recrystallized quartz grains were treated separately to understand the deformation conditions of the Puga Gneiss during early and late deformation stages related to UHP metamorphism and final stage of exhumation during retrogression, respectively. Microstructural observations suggest dynamic recrystallization in quartz and plagioclase at different temperature ranges. Misorientation analysis of both relict and recrystallized quartz grains reveals presence of Dauphiné Twins. Lattice preferred Orientation (LPO) of <c> axis of relict quartz grains generally shows more than one point maxima indicating that the relict grains preserve LPO developed during different stages of metamorphism/deformation. On the other hand, LPO of <c> axis of recrystallized grains from Karzok and Zildat fault zones shows asymmetric single girdle either normal or at an angle to the foliation plane, which suggests simple shear. We conclude that grain size reduction and recrystallization of the Puga Gneiss was greatly influenced by Dauphiné Twin and the final exhumation of the TMCC took place in a simple shear environment aided by activity along its two binding fault zones.

Quaternary environments on the Arabian Peninsula shifted between pronounced arid conditions and phases of increased rainfall, which had a profound impact on Earth surface processes. However, while aeolian sediment dynamics are reasonably well understood, there is a lack of knowledge with regard to variability in the fluvial systems. Presented here are the findings from several locations within wadi drainage systems to the west of the Hajar Mountains (United Arab Emirates). The performance of optically stimulated luminescence dating using a customized standardized growth curve approach is investigated, showing that this approach allows reliable determination of ages by reducing the machine time required. Three main periods of fluvial activity occurred at 160–135, 43–34, and ca. 20 ka. Additional ages fall into the latest Pleistocene and Late Holocene. None of the ages coincides with major wet periods in SE Arabia that have been identified in stalagmites and by the deposition of lake sediments. It is shown that fluvial activity was partly contemporaneous (within the given time resolution) with phases of aeolian deposition and was almost continuous, but likely sporadic, during the Middle to Late Pleistocene. This highlights the need for regionally defined paleoenvironmental records to fully understand the response of dryland systems to long-term climatic change.

A clear understanding of the solid-state reaction of kaolinite (Kln), quartz (Qtz), and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) is of great significance for the process optimization of coal gangue calcined with Na2CO3. In this work, a comparative study of the isothermal solid-state reaction systems of Kln–Na2CO3 and Kln–Qtz–Na2CO3 was performed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersion spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The results showed that the calcined products both for these reaction systems mainly contain different kinds of sodium aluminum silicates (e.g., NaAlSiO4, Na1.55Al1.55Si0.45O4, and Na1.95Al1.95Si0.05O4) and various kinds of sodium silicates (e.g., Na2Si3O7, Na2SiO3, and Na6Si2O7). The mass percentage of Na2CO3 played a key role in the phase transformation, determining the Na/Al/Si molar ratio of the formed sodium aluminum silicates. Compared with the reaction system of Kln–Na2CO3, the existence of Qtz inhibited the formation of sodium aluminum silicates in the reaction system of Kln–Qtz–Na2CO3. It should be noted that the formed phases both for these reaction systems were slightly different from that of the thermodynamical calculated results of Na2O–SiO2–Al2O3 using FactSage™ software. According to both the experimental and calculated results, a reasonable batching area for coal gangue activation was proposed that the addition of Na2CO3 should be in the range of 20–50% of the total mass of Kln, Qtz, and Na2CO3.

The diffusivity and diffusion mechanisms of hydrogen together with with deuterium and lithium, parallel to the c axis of quartz, were investigated experimentally at 800°C, 0.1 GPa with the activity of H2O or 2H2O ≈ 1 [2H is used throughout this work to describe deuterium rather than D, to avoid confusion with the diffusion coefficient, D]. The pH was set using mixtures of H2O (or 2H2O) and HCl. Three types of experiment were conducted: (1) H-in/Li-out; (2) 2H-in/H-out; and (3) 2H-in/H + Li out, using three different natural quartz crystals as starting materials. Profiles of H, 2H and Li were measured using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). H, 2H and Li are charge-compensated by Al3+ replacing Si4+, or by excess O2–. The total atomic concentration of monovalent cations appears to remain constant over the duration of the experiments. The resulting diffusion profiles are different for the three experimental designs and three starting materials, and some show complex shapes inconsistent with simple diffusion. A multi-site diffusion–reaction model is developed, with the theory based on previous models that have been derived mainly on the basis of conductivity measurements. In these models, the monovalent cations move away from their charge-balancing ion then diffuse rapidly to another site. The mobility of the monovalent cations is described by both a diffusion coefficient and an equilibrium constant that enables dissociation of the immobile charge-balanced defects. This model can describe complex step-shaped profiles formed in H-in/Li-out experiments, profiles with local maxima ('humped’ profiles) in 2H-in/H + Li out experiments, and error function-shaped profiles in 2H-in/H-out and previously published Li-in/H-out experiments. Our data provide support for models previously proposed for quartz. Studies of the lengths and forms of diffusion profiles from such experiments provide a useful complement to assertions from conductivity experiments.

Quartz (trigonal, low-temperature α-quartz) is the most important polymorph of the silica (SiO2) group and one of the purest minerals in the Earth crust. The mineralogy and mineral chemistry of quartz are determined mainly by its defect structure. Certain point defects, dislocations and micro-inclusions can be incorporated into quartz during crystallisation under various thermodynamic conditions and by secondary processes such as alteration, irradiation, diagenesis or metamorphism. The resulting real structure is a fingerprint of the specific physicochemical environment of quartz formation and also determines the quality and applications of SiO2 raw materials. Point defects in quartz can be related to imperfections associated with silicon or oxygen vacancies (intrinsic defects), to different types of displaced atoms, and/or to the incorporation of foreign ions in lattice sites and interstitial positions (extrinsic defects). Due to mismatch in charges and ionic radii only a limited number of ions can substitute for Si4+ in the crystal lattice or can be incorporated in interstitial positions. Therefore, most impurity elements in quartz are present at concentrations below 1 ppm. The structural incorporation in a regular Si4+ lattice site has been proven for Al3+, Ga3+, Fe3+, B3+, Ge4+, Ti4+, P5+ and H+, of which Al3+ is by far the most common and typically the most abundant. Unambiguous detection and characterisation of defect structures in quartz are a technical challenge and can only be successfully realised by a combination of advanced analytical methods such as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy and spectroscopy as well as spatially resolved trace-element analysis such as laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The present paper presents a review of the state-of-the-art knowledge concerning the mineralogy and mineral-chemistry of quartz and illustrates important geological implications of the properties of quartz.

Although luminescence sensitivity of quartz grains of desert sands has been used in discriminating provenance, it still remains unclear about its spatiotemporal variations and climatic implications. In this paper, the luminescence sensitivity of quartz grains from the northern margin of the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) was studied using single-aliquot optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and “pseudo” single-grain OSL measurements. Our results indicate that the OSL sensitivities have lower values in sand/loess beds and higher values in paleosols. We suggest that the variations in OSL sensitivity of quartz grains with depth on the CLP are mainly influenced by the origin of the quartz grains as they are related to the loess-sized material production processes and the migration of desert regions. More quartz grains of glacial origin with lower luminescence sensitivity, together with the reduced durations of irradiation and exposure cycles induced by shorter transport distance due to desert expansion, account for the lower luminescence sensitivity of glacial periods. Moreover, both the mountain processes and the retreat–advance of deserts are ultimately related to climatic changes, therefore, the orbital scale variations of luminescence sensitivity are controlled by glacial–interglacial oscillations on the CLP.

The Tarim Basin is the major source of aeolian dust in the northern hemisphere. Glacial activity in the mountains, transportation by rivers and homogenization by wind are believed to be responsible for dust production within the basin. However, the major source(s) and homogenization process(es) are not clear. Moreover, provenance studies on fine fractions have never been conducted. Here, we measured electron spin resonance (ESR) signal intensity and the crystallinity index of quartz in fine (< 16 μm) and coarse (> 64 μm) fractions of river sediments, dry lake sediments and mountain loess to examine the process(es) that produce aeolian dust. The result suggests that the coarse fraction of the river sediment was derived from the bedrock in the drainage area. The ESR signal intensity and crystallinity index of the fine fraction of river sediments from the Tian Shan Mountains and mountainous rivers in the westernmost Kunlun and Pamir mountains are also similar to the coarse fraction, suggesting the same sources. However, the ESR signal intensity and crystallinity index of the fine fraction of river sediments from the Kunlun Mountains are different from the coarse fraction and converge towards values close to the average for the fine fraction of river sediments and mountain loess. Convergence of the ESR and crystallinity index values for the fine fraction of river sediments from the Kunlun Mountains can be explained by contamination of the river sediments by aeolian dust. The convergent values resulted from the homogenization of fine detrital material by repeated recycling within the basin.
