The sorption of nitrate ions on calcined hydrotalcite-type compounds at 550°C (HT550), 650°C (HT650), and 850°C (HT850) from pure water solution at 25°C has been studied. The influence of the temperature was also investigated for the sample calcined at 850°C by studying the sorption process at 10 and 40°C. The experimental sorption data points were fitted to the Langmuir equation in order to calculate the sorption capacities (Xm) of the samples; Xm values range from 61.7 g kg−1 (HT550 at 25°C) to 147.0 g kg−1 (HT850 at 40°C). The values for the removal efficiency (R) obtained ranged from 70.5% for HT550 at 25°C to 99.5% for HT850 at 40°C. The sorption experiments showed that the greater the calcination temperature (850°C), the more effective the removal of nitrate. The increase in the temperature from 10 to 40°C for sample HT850 also tends to increase the sorption of nitrate from 63.3 g kg−1 to 147 g kg−1 and the corresponding removal efficiency from 71.5 to 99.5%.

The chemical and biological methods employed to date in the removal of free cyanide (CN−) and metal-cyanide complexes from aqueous fluids have proved expensive and problematic. A simpler and more economical approach was attempted in the present study using zeolite and sepiolite. The effectiveness of zeolite from Manisa-Gördes (Turkey) and of sepiolite Eskişehir-Sivrihisar (Turkey) at removing free and Cu-complexed cyanide, [Cu(CN)3]2− was investigated. For removal of CN−, the system performance was examined in terms of concentration, particle size, and retention time. Material with smaller particle sizes (<0.106 mm) performed better, particularly in the case of sepiolite. The maximum CN− removal capacities of zeolite and sepiolite were calculated as 571 and 695 meq/100 g for free CN adsorption, and 455 and 435 meq/100 g for Cu-complexed CN adsorption, respectively. The time to reach equilibrium was calculated as 1050 min. Acid activation, a simple cation adsorption removal method, did not improve the process, instead leading to reduced CN adsorption. Hydroxylated surfaces of metal oxides at the edges of zeolite develop charges and exchange with anions in water. Mg2+ ions located at the edges of the octahedral sheet can create complexes with CN− anions. Moreover, hydrogen bonding with anions (CN− in this case) and H+ of zeolitic water bonded to coordinated water molecules can also create complexes. These two complexes are considered to be effective mechanisms for sepiolite. The effects of both acid activation and CN adsorption were clearly observed in the Fourier-transform infrared spectra. Removal of CN was characterized by the Langmuir isotherm, indicating monolayer coverage with chemical bonding to the surface, which deteriorated during acid activation. The study indicated that zeolite and sepiolite can be used efficiently and easily for removal of free and Cu-complexed CN.

The conventional method of zeolite synthesis involves an expensive hydrothermal step whereby a mixture of a metakaolinite, sodium hydroxide, and water is preactivated by thermal treatment between 400°C and 1000°C. The objective of the current study was to determine whether Jordanian kaolinite could be converted to zeolite materials without thermal pre-activation. The alkaline hydrothermal transformation of kaolinite into hydroxysodalite (HS) was achieved, then followed by a reaction with citric acid and solid sodium hydroxide to obtain Zeolite A, or by adding solid Na2SiO3 to prepare zeolite X. These materials were tested for their ability to serve as removal agents for Basic Blue 41 (BB-41) dye from artificially contaminated water, at concentrations ranging from 25 to 1000 mg/L. The maximum removal capacities were estimated using the Langmuir model, with a value of 39 mg/g for hydroxysodalite. Zeolite-X achieved the lowest value (19 mg/g). The feasibility of BB-41 removal was deduced from the Freundlich model for the zeolites studied. The reported low-cost method is proposed as an alternative way to reduce the cost of synthesizing zeolite, and the materials were shown to be potential candidates for the removal of BB-41 dye.

Ruthenium compounds are highly toxic and carcinogenic. In the present study, clinoptilolite was used in the removal of Ru species from aqueous solutions. Clinoptilolite is a good choice of sorbents because it is naturally abundant and therefore cheap. After the process where Ru was removed from the aqueous solution, the clinoptilolite was characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, thermogravimetric analysis, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy techniques. The influence of pH, contact time, and temperature on the adsorption of Ru was investigated and the optimum conditions were found to be 2 h of contact time and pH = 2. Pseudo first-order, pseudo second-order, Elovich, and intra-particle diffusion models were used to analyze the adsorption-rate data. The pseudo second-order model was found to be the best kinetics model in terms of matching the experimental results obtained. Adsorption isotherms were constructed to assess the maximum adsorption capacity of clinoptilolite. The Langmuir model fitted the data reasonably well in terms of regression coefficients. Adsorption studies were also performed at different temperatures to calculate the thermodynamic parameters. The numerical value of ΔG0 decreased with increasing temperature, indicating that adsorption is favored at higher temperatures. The positive values of ΔH0 corresponded to the endothermic nature of the adsorption processes. The proposed method of removal is applicable at an industrial scale.

Field experiments determined the critical period for weed control (CPWC) in grafted and nongrafted watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thumb.) Matsum. & Nakai] grown in plasticulture. Transplant types included ‘Exclamation’ seedless watermelon as the nongrafted control as well as Exclamation grafted onto two interspecific hybrid squash (ISH) rootstocks, ‘Carnivor’ and ‘Kazako’. To simulate weed emergence throughout the season, establishment treatments (EST) consisted of two seedlings each of common purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.), large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.], and yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) transplanted in a 15 by 15 cm square centered on watermelon plants at 0, 2, 3, 4, and 6 wk after watermelon transplanting (WATr) and remained until the final watermelon harvest at 11 WATr. To simulate weed control at different times in the season, removal treatments (REM) consisted of two seedlings of the same weed species transplanted in a 15 by 15 cm square centered on watermelon plants on the same day of watermelon transplanting and allowed to remain until 2, 3, 4, 6, and 11 WATr, at which time they were removed. Season-long weedy and weed-free controls were included for both EST and REM studies in both years. For all transplant types, aboveground biomass of weeds decreased as weed establishment was delayed and increased as weed removal was delayed. The predicted CPWC for nongrafted Exclamation and Carnivor required only a single weed removal between 2.3 and 2.5 WATr and 1.9 and 2.6 WATr, respectively, while predicted CPWC for Kazako rootstock occurred from 0.3 to 2.6 WATr. Our study results suggest that weed control for this mixed population of weeds would be similar between nongrafted Exclamation and Exclamation grafted onto Carnivor. But the observed CPWC of Exclamation grafted onto Kazako suggests that CPWC may vary with specific rootstock–scion combinations.

Field studies were conducted in North Carolina to determine the critical period for Palmer amaranth control (CPPAC) in pickling cucumber. In removal treatments (REM), emerged Palmer amaranth were allowed to compete with cucumber for 14, 21, 28, or 35 d after sowing (DAS) in 2014 and 14, 21, 35, or 42 DAS in 2015, and cucumber was kept weed-free for the remainder of the season. In the establishment treatments (EST), cucumber was maintained free of Palmer amaranth by hand removal until 14, 21, 28, or 35 DAS in 2014 and until 14, 21, 35, or 42 DAS in 2015; after this, Palmer amaranth was allowed to establish and compete with the cucumber for the remainder of the season. The beginning and end of the CPPAC, based on 5% loss of marketable yield, was determined by fitting log-logistic and Gompertz equations to the relative yield data representing REM and EST, respectively. Season-long competition by Palmer amaranth reduced pickling cucumber yield by 45% to 98% and 88% to 98% during 2014 and 2015, respectively. When cucumber was planted on April 25, 2015, the CPPAC ranged from 570 to 1,002 heat units (HU), which corresponded to 32 to 49 DAS. However, when cucumber planting was delayed 2 to 4 wk (May 7 and May 21, 2014 and May 4, 2015), the CPPAC lasted from 100 to 918 HU (7 to 44 DAS). This research suggested that planting pickling cucumber as early as possible during the season may help to reduce competition by Palmer amaranth and delay the beginning of the CPPAC.

The use of natural clays for the removal of dyes from wastewater, an important part of environmental remediation, is desirable due, not least, to their low cost. Palygorskite (PAL), a rigid-structure clay, is a good candidate for use in the elimination of industrial effluents, based on its exceptional adsorptive properties. Recently, a new palygorskite deposit has been discovered in Cuba and its use in the adsorption of dyes has not yet been explored in detail. In the present study, the use of unmodified natural Cuban palygorskite as a host for dyes was evaluated. Congo red (CR) and methylene blue (MB) were the anionic and cationic dyes tested, respectively, because of their wide use and toxicity to the environment. Several physical-chemical parameters were studied in order to establish the best experimental conditions under which to achieve the greatest dye load per gram of clay. Natural mixtures with different percentages of montmorillonite were also tested to evaluate their effect on the adsorption of the dyes. The results indicated that at pH values of ~7–9 and an initial dye concentration of 0.1 mg mL–1, the process was efficient. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis proved the surface adsorption of both dyes on the clays. The main interactions involved in the clay-dye system were electrostatic forces and H-bonds. Adsorption of CR seemed to be controlled fundamentally by the palygorskite phase. Such results support the use of this natural clay as an efficient host for the removal of MB and CR from wastewater.

Organo-kenyaites were prepared from a cetyltrimethylammonium hydroxide (C16TMAOH) solution and solid sodium kenyaite (Na2Si22O45.10H2O) mixture. The effect of the initial cetyltrimethylammonium solution on the structure of the intercalated materials was investigated by CHN analyses, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis, SEM, and 29Si and 13C solid NMR techniques. For C16TMAOH concentration 0.25 mM, the Na+ cations were fully exchanged. Initial C16TMAOH concentrations higher than 0.25 mM had little effect on the intercalated amount of C16TMA+ cations. The organic cations content reached a plateau of 0.66 mmol/g. The arrangement model of C16TMA+ cations corresponded to a tilt of the organic cations to the silicate layers with an angle of 42° as deduced by XRD studies. The C16TMA+ cations exhibited mainly trans-configuration of the methyl chains, as was shown by solid 13C NMR. The thermal stability of the organo-silicates was studied using in situ FTIR and in situ XRD in the range 25–450°C. The C16TMA-kenyaites were stable at temperatures below 200°C. They collapsed at higher temperatures due to the decomposition of the intercalated surfactants. These organo-kenyaites were used to remove the acidic dye molecule, eosin. The removal tests were performed at varying conditions of initial dye concentrations, organic content in the organo-kenyaites and heating temperatures. In general, the organic modification improved the removal capacity of the Na-kenyaite from 2 mg of eosin/g to 60 mg of eosin/g, and this capacity was related to the organic contents and the calcination temperatures of the organo-kenyaites.

The effects of common cocklebur (Xanthium pensylvanicum Wallr.) on soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Wells′] development and seed yield were investigated at Urbana, Illinois, from 1974 through 1977. Increased densities of common cocklebur reduced soybean seed yield, total dry weight, and number of pods per plant. Under full-season competition, one common cocklebur/3 m of row reduced soybean seed yield by 3 to 12%. Soybean seed yield, total dry weight, and number of pods per plant increased as the length of time from soybean emergence to common cocklebur emergence increased. Common cocklebur emerging 4 weeks after soybean emergence reduced soybean seed yield by 7%. As duration of competition with common cocklebur increased, soybean seed yield, total dry weight, and number of pods per plant decreased. The reduction in soybean seed yield was less than 10% when common cocklebur was removed 6 weeks after soybean emergence. Effects of common cocklebur competition with soybeans in Illinois were similar to those observed in the southern United States.

Field experiments were conducted to determine the critical period for weed control (CPWC) in nongrafted ‘Amelia’ and Amelia grafted onto ‘Maxifort’ tomato rootstock grown in plasticulture. The establishment treatments (EST) consisted of two seedlings each of common purslane, large crabgrass, and yellow nutsedge transplanted at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 12 wk after tomato transplanting (WAT) and remained until tomato harvest to simulate weeds emerging at different times. The removal treatments (REM) consisted of the same weeds transplanted on the day of tomato transplanting and removed at 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 12 WAT to simulate weeds controlled at different times. The beginning and end of the CPWC, based on a 5% yield loss of marketable tomato, was determined by fitting log-logistic and Gompertz models to the relative yield data representing REM and EST, respectively. In both grafted and nongrafted tomato, plant aboveground dry biomass increased as establishment of weeds was delayed and tomato plant biomass decreased when removal of weeds was delayed. For a given time of weed removal and establishment, grafted tomato plants produced higher biomass than nongrafted. The delay in establishment and removal of weeds resulted in weed biomass decrease and increase of the same magnitude, respectively, regardless of transplant type. The predicted CPWC was from 2.2 to 4.5 WAT in grafted tomato and from 3.3 to 5.8 WAT in nongrafted tomato. The length (2.3 or 2.5 wk) of the CPWC in fresh market tomato was not affected by grafting; however, the CPWC management began and ended 1 wk earlier in grafted tomato than in nongrafted tomato.

Aerosol modeling is very important to study the behavior of aerosol dynamics in atmospheric environment. In this paper we consider numerical methods for the nonlinear aerosol dynamic equations on time and particle size. The finite volume element methods based on the linear interpolation and Hermite interpolation are provided to approximate the aerosol dynamic equation where the condensation and removal processes are considered. Numerical examples are provided to show the efficiency of these numerical methods.
