Ultra-compact H ii (UC HII) regions are an important phase in the formation and early evolution of massive stars and a key component of the interstellar medium (ISM). The main objectives of this work are to study the young stellar population associated with the G45.07+0.13 and G45.12+0.13 UC HII regions, as well as the ISM in which they are embedded. We determined the distribution of the hydrogen column density (N( $\mathrm{H}_2$ )) and dust temperature ( $T_d$ ) in the molecular cloud using Modified blackbody fitting on Herschel images obtained in four bands: 160, 250, 350, and $500\,\unicode{x03BC}\mathrm{m}$ . We used near-, mid-, and far-infrared photometric data to identify and classify the young stellar objects (YSOs). Their main parameters were determined by the radiation transfer models. We also constructed a colour-magnitude diagram and K luminosity functions (KLFs) to compare the parameters of stellar objects with the results of the radiative transfer models. We found that N( $\mathrm{H}_2$ ) varies from ${\sim}3.0 \times 10^{23}$ to $5.5 \times 10^{23}\,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ within the G45.07+0.13 and G45.12+0.13 regions, respectively. The maximum $T_d$ value is 35 K in G45.12+0.13 and 42 K in G45.07+0.13. $T_d$ then drops significantly from the centre to the periphery, reaching about 18–20 K at distances of ${\sim}2.6$ and ${\sim}3.7\,\mathrm{pc}$ from InfraRed Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) 19110+1045 (G45.07+0.13) and IRAS 19111+1048 (G45.12+0.13), respectively. The gas plus dust mass value included in G45.12+0.13 is ${\sim}3.4 \times 10^5\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ and ${\sim}1.7 \times 10^5\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ in G45.07+0.13. The UC HII regions are connected through a cold ( $T_d = 19\,\mathrm{K}$ ) bridge. The radial surface density distribution of the identified 518 YSOs exhibits dense clusters in the vicinity of both IRAS sources. The parameters of YSOs in the IRAS clusters (124 objects) and 394 non-cluster objects surrounding them show some differences. About 75% of the YSOs belonging to the IRAS clusters have an evolutionary age greater than $10^6$ yr. Their slope $\alpha$ of the KLF agrees well with a Salpeter-type initial mass function (IMF) ( $\gamma = 1.35$ ) for a high mass range (O–F stars, $\beta \sim 2$ ) at 1 Myr. The non-cluster objects are uniformly distributed in the molecular cloud, 80% of which are located to the right of the 0.1 Myr isochrone. The slope $\alpha$ of the KLF of non-cluster objects is $0.55\,\pm\,0.09$ , corresponding better to a Salpeter-type IMF for low-mass objects (G–M stars, $\beta \sim 1$ ). Our results show that two dense stellar clusters are embedded in these two physically connected UC HII regions. The clusters include several high- and intermediate-mass zero-age main sequence stellar objects. Based on the small age spread of the stellar objects, we suggest that the clusters originate from a single triggering shock. The extended emission observed in both UC HII regions is likely due to the stellar clusters.

We have used Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based photometry to determine total V-band magnitudes and mass-to-light ratios of more than 150 Galactic globular clusters. We do this by summing up the magnitudes of their individual member stars, using colour-magnitude information, Gaia DR2 proper motions, and radial velocities to distinguish cluster stars from background stars. Our new magnitudes confirm literature estimates for bright clusters with $V<8$, but can deviate by up to two magnitudes from literature values for fainter clusters. They lead to absolute mass-to-light ratios that are confined to the narrow range $1.4<M/L_V<2.5$, significantly smaller than what was found before. We also find a correlation between a cluster’s $M/L_V$ value and its age, in agreement with theoretical predictions. The $M/L_V$ ratios of globular clusters are also in good agreement with those predicted by stellar isochrones, arguing against a significant amount of dark matter inside globular clusters. We finally find that, in agreement with what has been seen in M 31, the magnitude distribution of outer halo globular clusters has a tail towards faint clusters that is absent in the inner parts of the Milky Way.

Many intermediate polars are hard X-ray sources. The theory of their hard X-ray radiation is well developed and allows us to determine white dwarf masse in this kind of cataclysmic variables. Here we present the results of determination the masses of 35 white dwarfs in the intermediate polars observed by observatories NuSTAR (10 sources) and Swift/BAT (25 sources). The corresponding mass accrerion rates and the luminosity function were also derived due to accurate distance to the sources well known now after Gaia DR2.

Determining the shape of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) and whether it is constant or varies in space and time is the Holy Grail of modern astrophysics, with profound implications for all theories of star and galaxy formation. On a theoretical ground, the extreme conditions for star formation (SF) encountered in the most powerful starbursts in the Universe are expected to favour the formation of massive stars. Direct methods of IMF determination, however, cannot probe such systems, because of the severe dust obscuration affecting their starlight. The next best option is to observe CNO bearing molecules in the interstellar medium at millimetre/ submillimetre wavelengths, which, in principle, provides the best indirect evidence for IMF variations. In this contribution, we present our recent findings on this issue. First, we reassess the roles of different types of stars in the production of CNO isotopes. Then, we calibrate a proprietary chemical evolution code using Milky Way data from the literature, and extend it to discuss extragalactic data. We show that, though significant uncertainties still hamper our knowledge of the evolution of CNO isotopes in galaxies, compelling evidence for an IMF skewed towards high-mass stars can be found for galaxy-wide starbursts. In particular, we analyse a sample of submillimetre galaxies observed by us with the Atacama Large Millimetre Array at the peak of the SF activity of the Universe, for which we measure 13C/18O⋍1. This isotope ratio is especially sensitive to IMF variations, and is little affected by observational uncertainties. At the end, ongoing developments of our work are briefly outlined.

We collected radial velocities of more than 50.000 individual stars in 156 Galactic globular clusters (GGC) and matched them with HST photometry and Gaia DR2 proper motions. This allowed us to derive the GGC’s mean proper motions and space velocities. By fitting a large set of N-body simulations to their velocity dispersion and surface density profiles, combined with new measurements of their internal radially dependent mass functions, we have determined their present-day masses and structural parameters, and for 144 GGCs their internal kinematics. We also derive the initial cluster masses by calculating the cluster orbits backwards in time applying suitable recipes to account for mass-loss and dynamical friction. The new fundamental parameters of GGCs are publicly available via an online database, which will regularly be updated.

Gaia DR2 catalog provides a unique possibility to study the three-dimensional structure and the three-dimensional velocity field of the nearby open clusters. We can either select stars with a maximum membership probability and the most accurate values for the proper motions, parallaxes, and the radial velocities, or study these clusters statistically using overwhelmingly large areas of sky of tens by tens degrees. The second approach allows us to reveal the extensive outer parts of the clusters - a corona and the tidal tails and to study the luminosity and mass functions of these clusters. We present the first results of the investigation of several nearby open clusters, including Pleiades, Alpha Persei, Ruprecht 147.

We present a brief summary of the results of a study of the effects of dynamical evolution on the stellar mass function of multiple-population globular clusters. Theoretical studies have predicted that the process of multiple-population cluster formation results in a system in which second-generation (2G) stars are initially more centrally concentrated than first-generation (1G) stars. In the study presented here, we have explored the implications of the initial differences between the 2G and 1G structural properties for the evolution of the local (measured at different distances from a cluster center) and global mass function. We have studied both systems in which 1G and 2G stars start with the same initial mass function (IMF) and systems in which 1G and 2G stars have different IMFs. Finally we have explored the evolution of the spatial mixing and found that the multiscale nature of the clusters studied leads to a dependence of the mixing rate on the stellar mass.

The determination of the star formation history is a key goal for understanding galaxies. In this regard, nearby galaxies in the Local Group offer us a complete suite of galactic environment that is perfect for studying the connection between stellar populations and galaxy evolution. In this paper, we present the star formation history of M31 using long period variable stars that are prime targets for studying the galaxy formation and evolution because of their evolutionary phase. In this method, at first, we convert the near-infrared K-band magnitude of evolved stars to mass and age and from this we reconstruct the star formation and evolution of the galaxy.

The evolution of galaxies is driven by the birth and death of stars. AGB stars are at the end points of their evolution and therefore their luminosities directly reflect their birth mass; this enables us to reconstruct the star formation history. These cool stars also produce dust grains that play an important role in the temperature regulation of the interstellar medium (ISM), chemistry, and the formation of planets. These stars can be resolved in all of the nearby galaxies. Therefore, the Local Group of galaxies offers us a superb near-field cosmology site. Here we can reconstruct the formation histories, and probe the structure and dynamics, of spiral galaxies, of the many dwarf satellite galaxies surrounding the Milky Way and Andromeda, and of isolated dwarf galaxies. It also offers a variety of environments in which to study the detailed processes of galaxy evolution through studying the mass-loss mechanism and dust production by cool evolved stars. In this paper, I will first review our recent efforts to identify mass-losing Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and red supergiants (RSGs) in Local Group galaxies and to correlate spatial distributions of the AGB stars of different mass with galactic structures. Then, I will outline our methodology to reconstruct the star formation histories using variable pulsating AGB stars and RSGs and present the results for rates of mass–loss and dust production by pulsating AGB stars and their analysis in terms of stellar evolution and galaxy evolution.

Observations of star-forming galaxies in the distant Universe (z > 2) are starting to confirm the importance of massive stars in shaping galaxy emission and evolution. Inevitably, these distant stellar populations are unresolved, and the limited data available must be interpreted in the context of stellar population synthesis models. With the imminent launch of JWST and the prospect of spectral observations of galaxies within a gigayear of the Big Bang, the uncertainties in modelling of massive stars are becoming increasingly important to our interpretation of the high redshift Universe. In turn, these observations of distant stellar populations will provide ever stronger tests against which to gauge the success of, and flaws in, current massive star models.

We present a number of notable results from the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey (VFTS), an ESO Large Program during which we obtained multi-epoch medium-resolution optical spectroscopy of a very large sample of over 800 massive stars in the 30 Doradus region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This unprecedented data-set has enabled us to address some key questions regarding atmospheres and winds, as well as the evolution of (very) massive stars. Here we focus on O-type runaways, the width of the main sequence, and the mass-loss rates for (very) massive stars. We also provide indications for the presence of a top-heavy initial mass function (IMF) in 30 Dor.

The red supergiant (RSG) phase is a key stage for the evolution of massive stars. The current uncertainties about the mass-loss rates of these objects make their evolution far to be fully understood. In this paper, we discuss some of the physical processes that determine the duration of the RSG phase. We also show how the mass loss affect their evolution, and can allow for some RSGs to evolve towards the blue side of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We also propose observational tests that can help in better understanding the evolution of these stars.

Outskirts of spiral galaxies, including our own, and dwarf irregular galaxies are known to have a different environment from the solar neighborhood, e.g., low metallicities ( ~ − 1 dex). Among them, the outer Galaxy is the closest and hence is so far the only site suitable for population studies of resolved stars on the same basis as solar neighborhood. We have obtained NIR images of young clusters in the outer Galaxy, using the Subaru 8.2-m telescope, and clearly resolved cluster members with mass detection limits of ~ 0.1 M⊙. Based on the fitting of K-band luminosity functions (KLFs) for four clusters, we found that the initial mass function (IMF) in the outer Galaxy is consistent with that in the solar neighborhood in terms of the high-mass slope and IMF peak. Upcoming observations with a higher spatial resolution and sensitivity, using JWST, TMT, etc., will allow us to extend spatially-resolved studies of the IMF to Local Group galaxies.

This talk focuses on the challenges facing the recent discovery of variations of the stellar initial mass function in massive early-type galaxies, with special emphasis on the constraints via gravity-sensitive spectral features.

The red supergiant phase is an important phase of the evolution of massive star, as it mostly determines its final stages. One of the most important driver of the evolution during this phase is mass loss. However, the mass-loss rates prescription used for red supergiants in current stellar evolution models are still very inaccurate.

Varying the mass-loss rate makes the star evolve for some time in yellow/blue regions of the HRD, modifying the number of RSGs in some luminosity ranges. Figure 1 shows how the luminosity distribution of RSGs is modified for various mass-loss prescriptions. This illustrates that it is theoretically possible to determine at least roughly what is the typical mass loss regime of RSGs in a stellar evolution perspective.

I will present a reanalysis of the properties of the red supergiant (RSG) progenitors of several extragalactic core-collapse, Type II-Plateau supernovae, including SN 2012aw, SN 2013ej, SN 2004et, and SN 2008bk. The observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for these stars, from the optical to the infrared, are compared with model SEDs for Galactic RSGs, as well as with the observed SEDs of analogous RSGs in Local Group galaxies. As a result, new estimates of the stellar temperatures and luminosities for the progenitors are obtained, and through comparison with recent massive stellar evolutionary tracks, new inferences are made for the progenitors initial masses. I will place these in the context of the RSG SN progenitor mass spectrum and of the so-called “red supergiant problem.”

The evolution of massive stars after the main sequence is not very well known from a theoretical point of view. Recent studies have shown that the way internal mixing processes, such as rotation and convection, are implemented in stellar evolution codes lead to significant discrepancies between the predictions of these codes. Particularly, the end-points of stellar evolution can be considerably different, making hard to understand the evolutionary path the lead to the observed supernovae progenitors.

The initial mass function (IMF) is an essential tool with which to study star formation processes. We have initiated the photometric survey of young open clusters in the Galaxy, from which the stellar IMFs are obtained in a homogeneous way. A total of 16 famous young open clusters have preferentially been studied up to now. These clusters have a wide range of surface densities (log σ = −1 to 3 [stars pc−2] for stars with mass larger than 5M⊙) and cluster masses (Mcl = 165 to 50, 000M⊙), and also are distributed in five different spiral arms in the Galaxy. It is possible to test the dependence of star formation processes on the global properties of individual clusters or environmental conditions. We present a preliminary result on the variation of the IMF in this paper.

The RGU-photographic investigation of an intermediate latitude field in the direction to the Galactic centre is presented. 164 extra-galactic objects, identified by comparison of Minnesota and Basel charts, are excluded from the program. Also, a region with size 0.104 square-degrees, contaminated by cluster (M5) stars and affected by background light of the bright star HD 136202 is omitted. Contrary to previous investigations, a reddening of E(B – V) = 0.046, corresponding to E(G – R) = 0.07 mag is adopted. The separation of dwarfs and evolved stars is carried out by an empirical method, already applied in some of our works. A new calibration for the metallicity determination is used for dwarfs, while the absolute magnitude determination for stars of all categories is performed using the procedures given in the literature. There is good agreement between the observed logarithmic space density histograms and the galactic model gradients. Also, the local luminosity function agrees with Gliese's (1969) and Hipparcos (Jahreiss & Wielen 1997) luminosity functions, for stars with 2 < M(G) ≤ 8 mag. For giants, we obtained two different local space densities from comparison with two Galactic models, i.e. D*(0) = 6.63, close to that of Gliese (1969), and D*(0) = 6.79. A metallicity gradient, d[Fe/H]/dz = –0.20 dex kpc–1, is detected for dwarfs (only) with absolute magnitudes 4 < M(G) ≤ 6, corresponding to a spectral type interval F5–K0.

The three main methods currently in use for estimating the excitation class of planetary nebulae (PNe) central stars are compared and evaluated using 586 newly discovered and previously known PNe in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). In order to achieve this we ran a series of evaluation tests using line ratios derived from de-reddened, flux-calibrated spectra. Pronounced differences between the methods are exposed after comparing the distribution of objects to their derived excitation. Line ratio comparisons show that each method's input parameters have a strong effect on the estimated excitation of a central star. Diagrams were created by comparing excitation classes with Hβ line fluxes. The best methods are then compared to published temperatures using the Zanstra method and assessed for their ability to reflect central star effective temperatures and evolution. As a result we call for a clarification of the term ‘excitation class’ according to the different input parameters used. The first method, which we refer to as Exneb relies purely on the ratios of certain key emission lines. The second method, which we refer to as Ex* includes modeling to create a continuous variable and, for optically thick PNe in the Magellanic Clouds, is designed to relate more closely to intrinsic stellar parameters. The third method, we refer to as Ex[Oiii]/Hβ since the [Oiii]/Hβ ratio is used in isolation to other temperature diagnostics. Each of these methods is shown to have serious drawbacks when used as an indicator for central star temperature. Finally, we suggest a new method (Exρ) for estimating excitation class incorporating both the [Oiii]/Hβ and the HeII λ4686/Hβ ratios. Although any attempt to provide accurate central star temperatures using the excitation class derived from nebula lines will always be limited, we show that this new method provides a substantial improvement over previous methods with better agreement to temperatures derived through the Zanstra method.
