There are different classes of pulsating stars in the H-R diagram. While many of those classes are undisputed, some remain a mystery such as the objects historically called ‘Maia variables’. Whereas the presence of such a class was suggested seven decades ago, no pulsational driving mechanism is known that could excite short-period oscillations in these late B to early A-type stars. Alternative hypotheses that would render the reports of variability of those stars erroneous have been proposed such as incorrect effective temperatures, binarity or rapid rotation, but no certain conclusions have been reached yet. Therefore, the existence of these variables as a homogeneous class of pulsating star is still under discussion. Meanwhile, many new candidates of these variables have been claimed especially by using photometric observations of space telescopes. In this study, we examined 31 objects that are alleged members of this hypothetical group and carried out detailed spectroscopic and photometric analyses to test the proposed hypotheses for their cause of variability. The $T_\textrm{eff}$, $\log g$, $v \sin i$, and chemical abundances of the targets were determined and the TESS photometric data were examined. As a result, we found that most of these targets are located inside the $\delta$ Scuti, $\beta$ Cephei, or SPB star instability strips, a few show evidence for binarity and others for rapid rotation. We give arguments that none of the apparently rapid pulsations in our targets is caused by a star outside any known instability strip. By extrapolation, we argue that most stars proposed as pulsators outside well-established instability domains are misclassified. Hence there is no sufficient evidence justifying the existence of a class of pulsating stars formerly known as the ‘Maia variables’.

The study of very short-period contact binaries provides an important laboratory in which the most important and problematic astrophysical processes of stellar evolution take place. Short-period contact systems, such as CC Com, are particularly important for binary evolution. Close binary systems, especially those with multiple system members, have significant period variations, angular momentum loss mechanisms predominance, and pre-merger stellar evolution, making them valuable astrophysical laboratories. In this study, observations of CC Com, previously reported as a binary system, and new observations from the TÜBİTAK National Observatory (TUG) and the space-based telescope TESS have revealed that there is a third object with a period of about eight years and a fourth object with a period of about a century orbiting the binary system. From simultaneous analysis of all available light curves and radial velocities, the sensitive orbital and physical parameters of the system components are derived. The orbital parameters of the components are P$_\mathrm{A}=0.2206868 \pm 0.0000002$ days, P$_\mathrm{B}=7.9\pm0.1$ yr, P$_\mathrm{C}=98\pm5$ yr, $e_3$ = 0.06, $e_4$ = 0.44 and the physical parameters as M$_\mathrm{A1}=0.712\pm0.009$ M$_{\odot}$, M$_\mathrm{ A2}=0.372\pm0.005$ M$_{\odot}$, $m_{B;i^{\prime}=90^\circ}=0.074$ M$_{\odot}$, $m_{C;i^{\prime}=90^\circ}=0.18$ M$_{\odot}$, R$_\mathrm{A1}=0.693\pm0.006$ R$_{\odot}$, R$_\mathrm{A2}=0.514\pm0.005$ R$_{\odot}$, L$_\mathrm{A1}$ = 0.103 L$_\odot$, L$_\mathrm{A2}$ = 0.081 L$_\odot$. Finally, the evolutionary status of the multiple system CC Com and its component stars is discussed.

NASA’s all-sky survey mission, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), is specifically engineered to detect exoplanets that transit bright stars. Thus far, TESS has successfully identified approximately 400 transiting exoplanets, in addition to roughly 6 000 candidate exoplanets pending confirmation. In this study, we present the results of our ongoing project, the Validation of Transiting Exoplanets using Statistical Tools (VaTEST). Our dedicated effort is focused on the confirmation and characterisation of new exoplanets through the application of statistical validation tools. Through a combination of ground-based telescope data, high-resolution imaging, and the utilisation of the statistical validation tool known as TRICERATOPS, we have successfully discovered eight potential super-Earths. These planets bear the designations: TOI-238b (1.61$^{+0.09} _{-0.10}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-771b (1.42$^{+0.11} _{-0.09}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-871b (1.66$^{+0.11} _{-0.11}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-1467b (1.83$^{+0.16} _{-0.15}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-1739b (1.69$^{+0.10} _{-0.08}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-2068b (1.82$^{+0.16} _{-0.15}$ R$_\oplus$), TOI-4559b (1.42$^{+0.13} _{-0.11}$ R$_\oplus$), and TOI-5799b (1.62$^{+0.19} _{-0.13}$ R$_\oplus$). Among all these planets, six of them fall within the region known as ‘keystone planets’, which makes them particularly interesting for study. Based on the location of TOI-771b and TOI-4559b below the radius valley we characterised them as likely super-Earths, though radial velocity mass measurements for these planets will provide more details about their characterisation. It is noteworthy that planets within the size range investigated herein are absent from our own solar system, making their study crucial for gaining insights into the evolutionary stages between Earth and Neptune.

The Alicante Survey of MAssive Stars in Hii Regions (A-SMASHeR) is aimed at finding the ratio of massive stars that are born in isolation. We present LIRIS/WHT images and EMIR/GTC spectra of the massive stellar content in A-SMASHeR regions. Our preliminary analysis yields ∼20% of regions hosting relatively (or truly) isolated massive stars.

We present our measurements of the amplitude of photometric and spectroscopic variability due to clumping in the wind of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars. Photometric variability was assessed using TESS light-curves, while spectroscopic variations were obtained from almost 20 years of monitoring of nearly 100 classical (presumably single) stars. Our results show an apparent dependence of the variability amplitude with the stars’ surface temperature and/or terminal velocity. Our interpretation is that it supports the idea that the dominating driver of the clumps in WR winds is a sub-surface convection region.

The recent generation of dedicated wide-field, high-cadence sky-surveys have overwhelmed discovery statistics for all manner of extra-galactic transients, and uncovered new phenomena seemingly linked to the demise of massive stars. For the more established classes of transients, such as core-collapse supernovae, surges in discoveries are allowing true population studies to provide quantitative constraints not only on the explosion properties, but also on the progenitor populations. Crucially, such population insights are benefiting from creation of samples of transients constructed with largely unbiased methods for discovery and characterisation. Surrounding these discoveries are increasing samples of extreme transients that do not fit the standard core-collapse paradigm - requiring the invocation of exotic progenitor stars and placing demands on the stellar evolution of such systems. Here I will provide a high-level observationally-driven overview of recent results related to massive stellar transients.

Mid- and far-infrared (IR) photometric and spectroscopic observations are fundamental to a full understanding of the dust-obscured Universe and the evolution of both star formation and black hole accretion in galaxies. In this work, using the specifications of the SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) as a baseline, we investigate the capability to study the dust-obscured Universe of mid- and far-IR photometry at 34 and $70\, {\rm{\mu }}\mathrm{m}$ and low-resolution spectroscopy at $17{-}36\, {\rm{\mu }}\mathrm{m}$ using the state-of-the-art Spectro-Photometric Realisations of Infrared-selected Targets at all-z (Spritz) simulation. This investigation is also compared to the expected performance of the Origins Space Telescope and the Galaxy Evolution Probe. The photometric view of the Universe of a SPICA-like mission could cover not only bright objects (e.g. $L_{IR}>10^{12}\,{\rm L}_{\odot}$ ) up to ${z}=10$ , but also normal galaxies ( $L_{IR}<10^{11}\,{\rm L}_{\odot}$ ) up to $\textit{z}\sim4$ . At the same time, the spectroscopic observations of such mission could also allow us to estimate the redshifts and study the physical properties for thousands of star-forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei by observing the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and a large set of IR nebular emission lines. In this way, a cold, 2.5-m size space telescope with spectro-photometric capability analogous to SPICA, could provide us with a complete three-dimensional (i.e. images and integrated spectra) view of the dust-obscured Universe and the physics governing galaxy evolution up to $\textit{z}\sim4$ .

We investigated the evolution of HS Hya system’s inclination based on analysis of its light curves in the period 1964–2021. HS Hya is EA type eclipsing binary star, belonging to separate group with changing orbital inclination. We used our recent observations as well as the data from sky surveys.

In the black hole (BH)–galaxy co-evolution framework, most of the star formation (SF) and the BH accretion are expected to take place in highly obscured conditions. The large amount of gas and dust absorbs most of the UV-to-soft-X radiation and re-emits it at longer wavelengths, mostly in the IR. Thus, obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) are very difficult to identify in optical or X-ray bands but shine bright in the IR. Moreover, X-ray background (XRB) synthesis models predict that a large fraction of the yet-unresolved XRB is due to the most obscured (Compton thick, CT: N $_{\text{H}}\ge 10^{24} \,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ ) of these AGN. In this work, we investigate the synergies between putative IR missions [using SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA), proposed for European Space Agency (ESA)/M5 but withdrawn in 2020 October, and Origins Space Telescope, OST, as ‘templates’] and the X-ray mission Athena (Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics), which should fly in early 2030s, in detecting and characterising AGN, with a particular focus on the most obscured ones. Using an XRB synthesis model, we estimated the number of AGN and the number of those which will be detected in the X-rays by Athena. For each AGN, we associated an optical-to-Far InfraRed (FIR) spectral energy distribution (SED) from observed AGN with both X-ray data and SED decomposition and used these SEDs to check if the AGN will be detected by SPICA-like or OST at IR wavelengths. We expect that, with the deepest Athena and SPICA-like (or OST) surveys, we will be able to photometrically detect in the IR more than 90% of all the AGN (down to $L_{2-10\text{keV}} \sim 10^{42}\,\mathrm{erg\ s}^{-1}$ and up to $z \sim 10$ ) predicted by XRB synthesis modeling, and we will detect at least half of them in the X-rays. The spectroscopic capabilities of the OST can provide ${\approx}51\,000$ and ${\approx}3\,400$ AGN spectra with $R= 300$ at 25–588 $\unicode[Times]{x03BC}$ m in the wide and deep surveys, respectively, the last one up to $z\approx 4$ . Athena will be extremely powerful in detecting and discerning moderate- and high-luminosity AGN, allowing us to properly select AGN even when the mid-IR torus emission is ‘hidden’ by the host galaxy contribution. We will constrain the intrinsic luminosity and the amount of obscuration for $\sim\!20\%$ of all the AGN (and $\sim\!50\%$ of those with $L_{2-10\text{keV}} > 3.2 \times 10^{43}\,\mathrm{erg\ s}^{-1}$ ) using the X-ray spectra provided by Athena WFI. We find that the most obscured and elusive CT-AGN will be exquisitely sampled by SPICA-like mission or OST and that Athena will allow a fine characterisation of the most luminous ones. This will provide a significant step forward in the process of placing stronger constraints on the yet-unresolved XRB and investigating the BH accretion rate evolution up to very high redshift ( $z \ge 4$ ).

We derive transformation equations between GALEX and UBV colours by using the reliable data of 556 stars. We present two sets of equations: as a function of (only) luminosity class and as a function of both luminosity class and metallicity. The metallicities are provided from the literature, while the luminosity classes are determined by using the PARSEC mass tracks in this study. Small colour residuals and high squared correlation coefficients promise accurate derived colours. The application of the transformation equations to 70 stars with reliable data shows that the metallicity plays an important role in estimation of more accurate colours.

In Panda et al.2018a, we constructed a refined sample from the original Shen et al.(2011) QSO catalog. Based on our hypothesis — the main driver of the Quasar Main Sequence is the maximum of the accretion disk temperature (TBBB) defined by the Big Blue Bump on the Spectral Energy Distribution (Panda et al.2017; Panda et al.2018b). We select the four extreme sources that have RFeII ⩾ 4.0 and use {CIGALE (Boquien et al.2018) to fit their multi—band photometric data. We also perform detailed spectral fitting including the Fe II pseudo—continuum (based on Śniegowska et al.2018)) to estimate and compare the value of RFEII. We show the dependence of FeII strength on changing metallicity.

Panchromatic SED fitting allows us to better resolve degeneracies between quantities like the star formation rate and dust. This in turn allows us to more robustly extract information about the different stellar populations that comprise a galaxy’s Star Formation History (SFH). Using the Dense Basis SED fitting method (Iyer & Gawiser 2017), we reconstruct the SFHs with uncertainties for a large sample of galaxies using an atlas of SEDs corresponding to a physically motivated basis of SFHs. Using Gaussian Process Regression, we encode the parameters describing these SFHs in a functionally independent form. This give us more robust estimates for quantities like Stellar Masses and Star Formation Rates, that directly depend on the SFH. These SFHs can additionally be used to answer questions like the time at which a galaxy’s star formation peaked, and how many major episodes of star formation occurred in a galaxy’s past, allowing us to go beyond the traditionally estimated ‘Galaxy Age’, which is often poorly constrained. They also allow us to probe the high-redshift low-stellar mass regime of the SFR-M* correlation by constructing trajectories in SFR-M* space for each galaxy.

The Gaia satellite recently released parallax measurements for nearly 400,000 white dwarf stars, allowing for precise measurements of their physical parameters. By combining these parallaxes with Pan-STARRS and CFIS-u photometry, we measured the effective temperatures and surface gravities for all white dwarfs within 100 pc and identified a sample of ZZ Ceti white dwarf candidates within the instability strip. We report the results of a photometric follow-up, currently under way, aimed at identifying new ZZ Ceti stars among this sample using the PESTO camera attached to the 1.6-m telescope at the Mont Mégantic Observatory. Our goal is to verify that ZZ Ceti stars occupy a region in the logg-Teff plane where no nonvariable stars are found, supporting the idea that ZZ Ceti pulsators represent a phase through which all hydrogen-line (DA) white dwarfs must evolve.

The J-PAS survey will soon start observing thousands of square degrees of the Northern Sky with its unique set of 56 narrow band filters covering the entire optical wavelength range, providing, effectively, a low resolution spectra for every object detected. Active galaxies and quasars, thanks to their strong emission lines, can be easily identified and characterized with J-PAS data. A variety of studies can be performed, from IFU-like analysis of local AGN, to clustering of high-z quasars. We also expect to be able to extract intrinsic physical quasar properties from the J-PAS pseudo-spectra, including continuum slope and emission line luminosities. Here we show the first attempts of using the QSFit software package to derive the properties for 22 quasars at 0.8 < z < 2 observed by the miniJPAS survey, the first deg2 of J-PAS data obtained with an interim camera. Results are compared with the ones obtained by applying the same software to SDSS quasar spectra.

Solar simulations and observations showed that the detection of Earth twins around Sun-like stars is difficult in radial velocities with current methods techniques. The Sun has proved to be very useful to test processes, models, and analysis methods. The convective blueshift effect, dominating for the Sun, decreases towards lower mass stars, providing more suitable conditions to detect low mass planets. We describe the basic processes at work and how we extended a realistic solar model of radial velocity, photometry, astrometry and LogR′HK variability, using a coherent grid of stellar parameters covering a large range in mass and average activity levels. We present selected results concerning the impact of magnetic activity on Earth-mass planet detectability as a function of stellar type. We show how such realistic simulations can help characterizing the effect of stellar activity on RV and astrometric exoplanet detection.

We have performed photometric analysis of four Galactic globular clusters (GGCs): NGC 4147, NGC 4590, NGC 5053 and NGC 7492 using far-UV and near-UV filters of the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on-board AstroSat. With the help of color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), we have identified ~150 blue horizontal branch stars (BHBs), and ~40 blue straggler stars (BSS) in the four GGCs. We study the temperature and radial distribution of BHBs and BSS for the four GGCs.

The advent of the Gaia mission is bringing astrometry to a new renaissance. Although Gaia will make important breakthroughs in many different scientific areas, stars in the crowded central fields of globular clusters (GCs) and at the faint end of the color-magnitude diagram are and will be out of Gaia’s reach. The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is an excellent astrometric tool that has allowed us to distinguish and measure positions and brightness of faint stars in pencil-beam fields down to the very center of some GCs. Gaia and HST are two wonderful, complementary tools, but are yet far from being able to offer a complete dynamical picture of GCs. There is now great prefiguration for what the next-generation telescopes will be able to do, both ground- and space-based. This document highlights strengths and weaknesses of different facilities at different spatial and spectral regimes.

Observations of dense stellar systems such as globular clusters (GCs) are limited in resolution by the optical aberrations induced by atmospheric turbulence (atmospheric seeing). At the example of holographic speckle imaging, we now study, to which degree image reconstruction algorithms are able to remove residual aberrations from a partial adaptive optics (AO) correction, such as delivered from ground-layer AO (GLAO) systems. Simultaneously, we study, how such algorithms benefit from being applied to pre-corrected instead of natural point-spread functions (PSFs). We find that using partial AO corrections already lowers the demands on the holography reference star by ∼3 mag, what makes more fields accessible for this technique, and also that the discrete integration times may be chosen about 2–3× longer, since the effective wavefront evolution is slowed down by removing the perturbation power.

The observational properties of a special class of stars (the so-called Blue Straggler stars - BSSs) in Globular Clusters are discussed in the framework of using this stellar population as probe of the dynamical processes occurring in high-density stellar systems. In particular, the shape of the BSS radial distribution and their level of central segregation have been found to be powerful tracers of the level of the dynamical evolution of the hosting cluster, thus allowing the definition of an empirical chronometer able to measure the dynamical age of star clusters.

The International Astronomical Union was conceived in 1918, and was formed one year later in Brussels. One of the 32 initial Commissions was the Committee on Stellar Photometry that later on became IAU Commission 25 Astronomical Photometry and Polarimetry, and since 2015 Commission B6 with the same name. The initial functions to be exercised by the Committee were

1. (a) to advise in the matter of notation, nomenclature, definitions, conventions, etc., and

2. (b) to plan and execute investigations requiring the cooperation of several observers or institutions.

The basic philosophy was that IAU Commission 25 was to be an advisory body, rather than a decision-making committee that imposes its regulations. This position was reconfirmed at the 10th IAU General Assembly in 1958.

From the early days on, the Commission members engaged in the teaching of the principles of photometric measurement – either via the Commission meetings and the ensuing reports, or via external means, such as lectures and publications. The topics of instruction dealt with absorption of light in the atmosphere, the modification imposed by the character of the receiving apparatus, the unequal response of different receivers to a same stimulus, and variations in the data-recorder response from one experiment to another.

From the 1930s on it was suggested that IAU Commission 25 takes responsibility in matters of standard stars, standard filters and standard calibration methods.

During the first half-century since its foundation, Commission 25 was an active forum for discussions on the basic principles of astronomical photometry, including the associated problems of transformability of magnitudes and colour indices from one instrumental configuration to another. During the second half-century of its existence, the Commission has served as a sort of news agency reporting on the developments in detector engineering, filter technology and data reduction. All along the Commission members were committed to accuracy and precision, a struggle that was primarily driven by the jumps forward in performance and sensitivity of every new detector that was introduced.

The development over one century shows that the Commission was continuously touching on the philosophy of precise measurement, where accurate measuring – for a select group of pioneers – was an end in itself.

This presentation looks back on the opinions of key players in the photometric standardisation debate, and briefly presents two case studies that illustrate the illusionary accuracy reached over a century in determining, as Commission member Ralph Allan Sampson put it, “a detail like magnitude”.
