Emotion regulation is generally thought of as the process of overriding one's initial emotional response to personally relevant events. One frequently investigated type of emotion regulation is cognitive reappraisal, which describes one's ability to cognitively alter the meaning of an event. Cognitive reappraisal is associated with better cognitive, social, and health outcomes compared to other emotion regulation strategies. The cognitive building blocks of cognitive reappraisal are related to executive cognitive control processes, which broadly describe one's ability to engage in non-automatic and goal-oriented behaviors. Crucially, executive control processes are also relevant in demanding cognitive tasks such as prospective memory since, similarly to cognitive reappraisal, they involve effortful and purpose driven efforts. However, cognitive reappraisal has thus far not been investigated regarding prospective memory performance despite findings that suggest that emotionally evocative stimuli improve prospective memory performance. The present study investigated whether cognitive reappraisal state and trait measures as well as other types of emotion regulation strategies are associated with prospective memory accuracy of negatively valenced prospective memory targets.

A total of 45 participants (69% women; M = 22.62 years, SD = 5.69 years) took part in this cross-sectional study. Cognitive reappraisal and prospective memory tasks were administered on the computer. A total of 106 pictures were shown in the prospective memory task, including 12 prospective memory hits. A 2-back paradigm was used as the effortful ongoing task. Dependent measures included accuracy of and reaction times to negative prospective memory hits. A total of 45 pictures were shown in the cognitive reappraisal task. Participants were asked to decrease their negative emotions when looking at previously normed negatively valenced pictures versus merely looking at them (Lang et al., 2001). Dependent measures in the cognitive reappraisal task included success of downregulating negative emotion after the DECREASE versus LOOK instruction. A mood manipulation check and a questionnaire asking about participants' reappraisal strategies was conducted. Trait based measures of emotion regulation included the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire and the Dysfunction of Emotion Regulation Scale.

Participants endorsed significantly higher negative mood after looking at negative versus neutral pictures, t(48) = 22.77, p , .05). Ratings further indicated that participants were able to significantly decrease how negative they felt when reappraising versus looking at negative pictures, t(44) = 12.82, p , .05. Regarding the relationship between prospective memory accuracy of negatively valanced prospective memory targets and cognitive reappraisal ability, no significant bivariate correlation was found (p > .05). However, a significant bivariate correlation was found between reaction times to negatively valenced prospective memory targets and cognitive reappraisal ability (rs = -.32, p = .03). No significant relationship was observed between prospective memory accuracy of or reaction times to negatively valenced prospective memory targets and trait based measures of emotion regulation (all ps > .05).

Hypotheses were partly supported. Higher state-based cognitive reappraisal abilities may be associated with lower cognitive costs when asked to remember negatively evocative pictures and/or higher overall cognitive capacity. The importance of assessing emotion regulation when utilizing emotionally evocative stimuli and their clinical significant is discussed.

Historically, numerous studies have supported a male advantage in math. While more recent literature has shown that the gender gap is either decreasing or non-significant, a gender difference remains for higher level math (high school and college) (Hyde et. al. 1990; Casey et. al. 1995). It is known that both cognitive and non-cognitive factors influence math performance. There is little evidence for gender differences in working memory (Miller & Bichsel, 2004), which is a key predictor for mathematics. There is, however, evidence for gender differences in the non-cognitive domain, including math anxiety, with females having higher levels (Miller & Bichsel, 2004; Goetz, et. al. 2013). This study evaluates gender differences in both standardized and everyday math performances, and the way that cognitive and non-cognitive factors impact math. The study is focused on a very understudied group with high levels of math difficulty, namely community college students. We expected to find gender differences in math, and expect these to be in part accounted for by gender differences in strong mathematical predictors, particularly non-cognitive factors.

Participants included 94 community college students enrolled in their first math class (60 female; 34 male). Participants were administered the Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement - 3rd edition (KTEA3): Math Computation (MC) and Math Concepts Application (MCA) subtests, as well as an original Everyday Math (EM) measure which assessed their math ability in the context of common uses for math (e.g., financial and health numeracy). Additional measures included math anxiety, self-efficacy, and confidence. Finally, complex span working memory tasks were administered to assess verbal and spatial working memory. Analyses were performed using correlation and regression to examine relationships between the cognitive and non-cognitive variables and standardized and everyday math measures.

Correlations showed that all cognitive and non-cognitive variables are significantly correlated with all three math measures (all p < .05). There were no significant gender differences for any of the math measures, nor the working memory, or non-cognitive measures. Regression showed that across all three math outcomes, math anxiety and verbal working memory are significantly predictive of math performance. Overall R2 values were significant (range 27% to 37%, all p < .001). Working memory and math anxiety were unique predictors in all three regressions (all p < .05), but other non-cognitive variables such as self-efficacy did not show unique prediction (all p >.05).

There was no evidence for gender differences on any studied variable. This stands in contrast to prior studies, although few studies have included community college students. On the other hand, both cognitive and non-cognitive factors were complimentary in the prediction of math outcomes, which is consistent with prior work. Among non-cognitive predictors, math anxiety was particularly prominent. This study clarifies prior conflicting work regarding gender differences, and highlights the role of both math anxiety and working memory as relevant for multiple math outcomes.

An acquired brain injury (ABI) is a neurological pathology that generates a physical injury in the brain. These include cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) and traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Brain injuries can cause cognitive, emotional, and social problems, which have the potential to severely alter a person’s independence and quality of life. Loneliness, thesubjective experience of social isolation, has been shown to be the best predictor of mental health problems and poorquality of life in patients with ABI. This study aimed to explore the relationship between cognitive, emotional, and social determinants and loneliness in Puerto Ricans with ABI in the chronic phase.

Cross-sectional, exploratory, and correlational methods were implemented. Assessments included the Frontal Systems Behavioral Scale - Spanish version (FrSBe-SP), Perth Emotional Reactivity Scale -Spanish version (PERS), Anticipated Stigma and Concealment (ASC), and the University of California Los Angeles - Loneliness Scale (UCLA-LS).

A total of seventeen participated (n=17). Twenty-nine percent of participants were female. Forty-seven percent had history of previous CVA and fifty-two percent had history of TBI. Correlational analyses suggest a positive and significant relationship between executive dysfunction (FrSBe-SP) and feelings of loneliness (UCLA-LS) (p=.601), as well as a positive and significant relationship between neuroticism-negative emotional reactivity (PERS) and feelings of loneliness (UCLA-LS) (p=.736). Correlational analysis suggests there is no significant relationship between anticipated stigma (ASC) and feelings of loneliness (UCLA-LS) (p=.282).

Our findings suggest that there is a significant relationship between cognitive determinants (executive functions) and emotional determinants (neuroticism) with feelings of loneliness in people with a history of ABI. These results support the connection between executive dysfunction, the tendency to experience negative emotions, and the subjective experience of loneliness, consistent with previous studies. However, our study did not find any significant relationship between interactional determinants, such as stigma and concealment, and loneliness. Understanding the role of cognition, emotions, and social variables in reported feelings of loneliness is important for clinical neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation interventions.

Youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), characterized by symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity, often experience challenges with emotion regulation (ER) and/or emotional lability/negativity (ELN).1-3 Prior work has shown that difficulties with ER and ELN among young children contribute to lower academic achievement.4-6 To date, research examining associations between ADHD and academic achievement have primarily focused on the roles of inattentive symptoms and executive functioning.7-8 However, preliminary work among youth with ADHD suggests significant associations between disruptions in emotional functioning and poor academic outcomes.9-10 The current study will examine associations between ER, ELN, and specific subdomains of academic achievement (i.e., reading, spelling, math) among youth with and without ADHD.

Forty-six youth (52% male; Mage=9.52 years; 76.1% Hispanic/Latino; 21 with ADHD) and their parents were recruited as part of an ongoing study. Parents completed the Disruptive Behavior Disorders Rating Scale11 and Emotion Regulation Checklist12 about their child. Youth completed the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence-II13 and three subtests [Spelling (SP), Numerical Operations (NO), Word Reading (WR)] of the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test-III.14 Univariate analysis of variance assessed differences in emotional functioning and academic achievement among youth with and without ADHD. Correlation and regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between emotional factors and the three subtests of academic achievement.

Youth with ADHD exhibited significantly higher ELN (M=30.7, SD=8.7) compared to their peers (M=23.2, SD=5.8), when controlling for child age, sex, and diagnoses of conduct disorder and/or oppositional defiant disorder [F(1,41)=8.96, p<.01, ŋp2=.18]. With respect to ER, youth with (M=24.8, SD=4.2) and without ADHD (M=25.8, SD=4.3) did not differ [F(1,41)=.51, p=.48]. Surprisingly, within this sample, ADHD diagnostic status was not significantly associated with performance on any of the academic achievement subtests [WR: F(1,41)=.29, p=.59; NO: F(1,41)=.91, p=.35; SP: F(1,41)=2.14, p=.15]. Among all youth, ER was significantly associated with WR (r=.31, p=.04) and SP (r=.35, p=.02), whereas ELN was associated with performance on NO (r=-.30, p=.04). When controlling for child age, sex, IQ, and ER within the full sample, higher ELN was associated with lower scores on the NO subtest (b=-.56, SE=.26, p=.04). The associations between higher ER and WR scores (b=1.12, SE=.51, p=.03), as well as higher ER and SP scores (b=1.47, SE=.56, p=.01), were significant when controlling for child age and sex, but not ELN and IQ (p=.73 and p=.64, respectively).

As expected, youth with ADHD had higher ELN, although they did not differ from their peers in terms of ER. Results identified distinct associations between ER and higher reading/spelling performance, as well as ELN and lower math performance across all youth. Thus, findings suggest that appropriate emotional coping skills may be most important for reading and spelling, while emotional reactivity appears most salient to math performance outcomes. In particular, ELN may be a beneficial target for intervention, especially with respect to improvement in math problem-solving skills. Future work should account for executive functioning skills, expand the academic achievement domains to include fluency and more complex academic skills, and assess longitudinal pathways within a larger sample.

Cognitive impairment in depression could present as subjective and objective, but the intensity of subjective impairment is higher and is not correlated with the deficits measured by neuropsychological tests. Subjective cognitive impairment lowers quality of life and is associated with the severity of depression. Among depressive patients, negative emotional bias is present. It is better memory for negative or positive information than for neutral information. We hypothesized that rumination is associated with subjective cognitive impairment.

The study was performed through the online PsyToolkit platform. The study sample consisted of 168 healthy controls and 93 patients with depression were enrolled in the study. Participants completed questionnaires and performed a memory task that contained emotional words. The forty words were chosen from the Nencki Affective Word List. The list for memory test consists of 5 words from each Category: Happiness, Anger, Fear, Sad, Disgusting, and Neutral, and 10 words from category ‘Unclassified’ to balance the valence and arousal of the set. After 15 minutes, they recognized old words from the list of 80 words. Half of them were the same as in the first part, and other words were new, chosen with the same criteria. Depression symptoms were measured using the Beck Depression Inventory-II, subjective cognitive impairment with the Perceived Deficits Questionnaire-20, and intensity of rumination with the Polish Questionnaire of Rumination.

Subjective cognitive impairment and rumination were higher in patients with depression. They also had a higher error rate than healthy controls U = 6462.5; p = .021, especially in words from the neutral (U = 6292; p = .008) and happiness category (U = 6585; p = .031). However, there was no association between subjective cognitive impairment and performance in memory tasks. The regression analysis showed that depressive symptoms and intensity of rumination are better predictors of subjective cognitive deficits than objective performance on a memory task. The results of PDQ-20 were correlated with the error rate of words from categories: Happiness (r = -.162**), Sad (r = -.116*) and Neutral (r = -.145**). Words from categories Happiness, Disgust and Neutral were significantly better recognized than Unclassified, Fear or Sad group of words χ 2 F (6) = 132.685; p < .001. In MDD group recognition of Disgust words were statistically highest than Anger and Fear words χ 2 F (6) = 36.795; p < .001. The recognition of Happiness and Neutral word were not significantly different to other words.

Cognitive problems are common in depression and affect quality of life. Subjective cognitive impairment is more closely related to rumination than objective cognitive impairment among healthy participants and patients with major depressive disorder. Emotional bias among depressive patients has been partially confirmed. Emotional impact is important for memory of words and subjective perception of cognition.

High levels of stress may increase risk for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) dementia. Religious coping practices to deal with stress (i.e., prayer, having faith, attending religious services) may reduce risk of dementia. Studying religious stress coping in cognitively unimpaired individuals with autosomal-dominant AD (ADAD), who will develop dementia later in life, may inform us about the role of religious coping in modifying the clinical trajectory from preclinical to clinical stages of the disease. We examined religious stress coping in cognitively unimpaired mutation carriers from the world’s largest ADAD kindred and its relation to markers of brain pathology and memory.

16 cognitively unimpaired Presenilin-1 E280A mutation carriers and 19 age and education-matched noncarrier family members from the Colombia-Boston (COLBOS) Biomarker Study were included. A subsample (n=26; 13 cognitively unimpaired carriers) underwent amyloid and tau PET imaging. Participants completed the Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CAE) that includes a subscale used to assess religious stress coping, where a higher score indicates more coping, and underwent memory testing using the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT). The Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) was used to assess depression. Mann-Whitney U tests were used to examine group differences in religious stress coping, brain pathology (i.e., cortical amyloid-beta, entorhinal and precuneus tau), memory, and depression. Nonparametric correlations were used to examine associations among religious stress coping, age, education, depression, memory, and pathology.

Carriers had poorer FCSRT immediate free recall than noncarriers (U=84.5, p=.024). There was no difference between groups in CAE religious stress coping, other FCSRT memory scores, nor GDS score (all p>.05). Compared to non-carriers, carriers had more cortical amyloid (U=152.0, p<.001) and more precuneus tau (U=123.0, p=.05). In carriers, religious stress coping was positively associated with education (r=.57, p=.022), FCSRT immediate free recall (a=.75, p<.001), FCSRT cued recall (a=.50, p=.047), and FCSRT delayed recall (r=.52, p=.038). After controlling for education, religious stress coping remained positively associated with FCSRT immediate free recall (r=.65, p=.009), but not other FCSRT memory scores (all p>.05). Religious stress coping was not associated with age or GDS score regardless of controlling for education (all p>.05). In carriers, religious stress coping was negatively associated with entorhinal tau (r=-.73, p=.005) and precuneus tau burden (r=-.58, p=.037). The association between religious stress coping and entorhinal tau remained significant after controlling for education (r=-.67, p=.016), but not precuneus tau (p>.05). Religious stress coping was not associated with cortical amyloid regardless of controlling for education in carriers (all p>.05). None of the associations with brain pathology or memory were significant in the non-carrier group.

Religious stress coping was associated with better memory performance and a low AD pathology burden in individuals at genetic risk for developing AD dementia. Future studies with independent and larger samples should further examine religious stress coping strategies and their associations with other AD-related biomarkers, as well as with other risk and protective factors to better understand their role at the preclinical and prodromal stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

Korsakoff's syndrome (KS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder, caused by vitamin B1 insufficiency. KS is characterized by severe declarative amnesia. Often, also executive disorders are present. Emotion recognition and theory of mind are gold-standard measures of social cognition. Moral decision making is often assessed by means of moral dilemmas. Surprisingly social cognition and moral decision making has received hardly any attention in research on KS, although the severity of behavioural problems in KS suggest possible problems in both domains. The aim of this study was therefore to broadly assess social cognition and moral decision-making capacities in patients with KS.

20 KS patients and 20 age-, education-, and gender-matched healthy controls were assessed on standardized tests for social cognition, namely the mini-Social Cognition and Emotional Assessment battery (mini-SEA), and a specialized version of the Sally-Anne Test. Moral decision making was assessed by means of the Moral Behaviour Inventory (MBI) for everyday moral dilemmas, and ten cartoons of abstract moral dilemmas. For moral decision making, “yes” and “no” responses were scored, together with a scoring for moral reasoning according to the Kohlberg stages of moral maturity.

KS patients have large impairments in both cognitive and affective aspects of social cognition. Their ability to recognize emotions, take the perspective of others, and understand socially awkward situations is vastly compromised. While KS patients were able to replicate the Sally Anne storyline, their task performance was on chance level. Regarding moral decision making, there was a tendency to more frequently carry out the moral dilemma. Moral maturity, as indexed by means of their reasoning behind the decision was of a lower level. Of interest, moral immaturity could find its origin already before the onset of the KS diagnosis, as suggested by elevated premorbid levels of delinquent behavior.

Both social cognition and moral decision making are compromised in KS patients. Specifically social cognitive disorders are the direct result of KS, and are likely to strongly relate to social and neuropsychiatric issues in KS. Moral decision making was more likely to be already of a lower level of maturity, based on a strong relationship between premorbid delinquency and moral immaturity in KS patients. This study highlights the importance to properly index social cognition in neuropsychological assessments for individuals with a possible KS diagnosis

Epilepsy, and specifically drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), is associated with an increased risk of psychiatric dysfunction, likely due to a combination of physiological mechanisms, emotional reactions to disease burden, and bi-directional influences. Women with epilepsy warrant special consideration due to many factors, including hormonal influences on seizure susceptibility, reproductive health considerations, and unique psychiatric and clinical profiles. However, there is yet to be large-scale research characterizing women with DRE. The present study characterized psychiatric conditions, treatment, and hospitalization data in a Veterans Health Administration (VHA)-wide sample of women Veterans and then compared results to a male Veteran sample to explore sex differences.

Data from 52,579 Veterans enrolled in VHA care between FY2014 and 2nd Quarter FY2020 were gathered from the VHA Corporate Data Warehouse administrative data. The sample was comprised of 5,983 women (11.4%) and 46,596 men (88.6%). Demographics, psychiatric diagnoses, psychiatric medications, ER visits, and hospitalizations were characterized. Chi-square analyses were used to examine group differences between men and women.

The vast majority of the women Veteran sample had at least one psychiatric diagnosis (86.1%), with over half of the sample diagnosed with depression (68.3%), PTSD (54.1%), and/or anxiety disorders (57.7%). When compared to men, women Veterans were more likely to have a psychiatric diagnosis (86.1% vs. 68.1%), evidenced a higher number of co-morbid psychiatric conditions (2.4 vs. 1.6), and were prescribed more psychiatric medications (3.4 vs. 2.3; all significant at p<0.001). All individual psychiatric diagnoses were more prevalent in women than men and, notably, suicidality was also higher in women (13.5% vs. 10.0%; p < 0.001). Women Veterans also had a higher number of ER visits (6.9 vs. 5.5; p < 0.001) and psychiatric hospitalizations than men (.4 vs. .3, p < 0.001).

The present study represents the largest known investigation to date of women with DRE and is also the largest study of women Veterans with any form of epilepsy. It highlights a vast psychiatric burden in this subset of women Veterans, with high rates of psychiatric comorbidity, lending to downstream effects on psychiatric medication burden and risk for emergency care usage and psychiatric hospitalization. Comparisons to men emphasize that women are differentially impacted by the psychiatric toll of DRE and warrant special consideration. The markedly higher rates of depressive disorders and suicidality in women Veterans with DRE is especially notable when considering risk of harm and mortality. Overall, the present work adds to the paucity of literature of women Veterans with seizures and gaps in the broader DRE research base, with implications for specialized screening and maximizing treatment interventions in this population.

Previous research suggests that individuals with isolated Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (AgCC) have cognitive and psychosocial deficiencies that include impaired recognition of the emotions of others (Symington et al., 2010) and a diminished ability to infer and describe the emotions of others (Paul et al., 2021; Turk et al., 2010). In addition, galvanic skin responses effectively discriminated between emotional images despite atypical emotion ratings (Paul et al, 2006), supporting a dissociation between cognitive and affective empathy in AgCC. Likewise, atypical patterns of visual attention to faces corresponded with impaired emotion recognition in AgCC (Bridgman et al, 2014), suggesting that atypical visual attention in AgCC negatively impacts the ability to identify others’ emotions. This study used the Multifaceted Empathy Test [MET] (Foell et al., 2018) to examine the impact of visual aesthetics (photo composition) on empathetic feelings (affective empathy) and situational emotion recognition (cognitive empathy) in persons with AgCC. Both cognitive and affective empathy scores are typically higher on MET stimuli composed according to the “Golden Spiral” (Callaway, 2022).

Results from 50 control participants recruited from Cloud Research were compared to responses from 19 participants with AgCC and normal-range FSIQ (>80). Data was gathered through an online version of the MET, which uses a series of photographs of individuals displaying an emotion, half of which adhere to the compositional technique known as “The Golden Spiral.” To measure cognitive empathy, the participants are asked to pick the correct emotion being displayed with three distractors for each item. To measure affective empathy, they are then asked on a sliding scale, “how much do you empathize with the person shown” (1 = Not at all, 7 = Very much).

Repeated measures mixed ANOVAs revealed no difference between AgCC and control groups on affective empathy, and as expected on the MET, both groups had significantly higher ratings for photos composed according to the Golden Spiral (AgCC, np2 = .071; control, np2 = .136). In contrast, the AgCC group scored significantly lower than controls overall on cognitive empathy, np2 =.065. Exploratory post-hoc found a significant group difference in cognitive empathy only on photos composed according to the Golden Spiral, np2 = .090, with the scores in the AgCC group unimpacted by composition type while the control group exhibiting significantly higher scores Golden Spiral images, np2 = .254.

Empathic deficits in AgCC were restricted to the cognitive component, while affective empathy was not impaired. Visual aesthetics of photo composition influenced affective empathy ratings in both AgCC and control groups. However, adults with AgCC had diminished ability to give cognitive labels to the emotional states of others, which was not enhanced by the formal aesthetics of stimuli. Thus the corpus callosum seems to facilitate the ability to cognitively label emotions by facilitating visual attention. It also suggests that the corpus callosum does not facilitate affective empathy, in part because it does not appear to determine whether formal aesthetics influences the processing of visual stimuli in AgCC or neurotypical controls.

Over the past decade, resting state functional connectivity has shown great promise as a diagnostic and prognostic tool when applied to neurological and psychiatric populations. For example, the integrity of the default mode network - among other large-scale brain networks - has emerged as a common target of neurological disease and psychopathology. Despite this explosion in research, relatively little is understood about the cognitive characteristics of the mind at rest, and most inquiries have relied on retrospective self-report questionnaires that pose challenges for clinical populations with memory or metacognitive deficits. Understanding how different people mentally structure their idle thoughts may shed light on existing clinical neuroscience findings. Furthermore, the resting state is common context in daily life, and the lack of external stimulation during rest periods may foster the emergence of dysfunctional and/or impoverished thoughts for individuals with mental health or neurological conditions. Considering these important gaps, we conducted a line of research quantifying clinical and demographic sources of variability in resting state cognition.

Across three studies, resting state cognition was captured by training adults to voice aloud their thoughts in real time across 7-10 minute rest periods in the lab, the MRI scanner, and participants’ own home. Participants were audio recorded using this think aloud technique, while efforts to minimize thought censorship were also employed. Audio-recorded speech was then transcribed and analyzed for content and dynamic characteristics by external coders and automated text analysis. Relevant characteristics were isolated and examined in relation to variability across participants in trait rumination, divergent thinking (a measure of creativity assessed with a separate Alternate Uses Task), as well as age.

Across studies, the think aloud paradigm in resting state contexts showed promising ecological validity. Participants reported a low degree of thought censorship and a moderate-to-high degree of similarity of thoughts to everyday life. Additionally, total word counts across the transcripts were similar to typical rates of natural speech. Notable variability across participants also emerged in the content and dynamic characteristics of resting state thought.

Increased trait rumination was associated with the emergence of brooding in real time, including a) more negative, self-focused, and past-oriented thoughts, as well as b) dynamic signatures marked by an attraction towards negative conceptual states, and c) a narrowing of conceptual scope following negative content. In contrast, more creative individuals exhibited a pattern of exploration and curiosity in their idle thoughts, with thought transitions characterized as more loosely associative. Finally, older adults generated more linguistic diversity in their use of positive emotional words (a novel marker of emotional granularity), accompanied by increases in psychological well-being.

Taken together, these studies highlight substantial demographic and clinical sources of variability in resting state cognition, with important implications for resting state functional connectivity findings. They also offer a promising methodological tool and theoretical framework to promote further research in neuropsychology and related fields.

Cognitive reappraisal is a frequently researched emotion regulation strategy. It broadly describes one's ability to alter or reinterpret the meaning of personally relevant events. Cognitive reappraisal is robustly associated with lower self-reported negative affect, lower physiological arousal, and higher positive affect, which is the reason why it is a key component of many psychotherapeutic interventions. However, little research to date has investigated different types of cognitive reappraisal tactics and their association with cognitive reappraisal success. Given that there are an arguably indefinite number of ways to reappraise personally relevant events, it would be clinically informative to identify those tactics that are associated with the greatest decline in negative emotionality. The current study investigated whether one's predominant use of a specific reappraisal strategy is associated with divergent cognitive reappraisal success.

A total of 42 participants (67% women; M = 23.33 years, SD = 6.05 years) took part in this cross-sectional study. Cognitive reappraisal was administered via a computerized task modeled after McRae et al. (2012). A total of 45 previously normed pictures were shown in the cognitive reappraisal task (Lang et al., 2001). Participants were asked to either decrease how they felt or look at negatively evocative images. The dependent measure was success of downregulating negative emotion after the “decrease” versus “look” instruction (i.e., cognitive reappraisal success). A mood manipulation check, a questionnaire asking about participants' reappraisal strategies, and frequency of each reappraisal tactic was conducted after the task was completed to ensure that participants implemented the task as intended. Reappraisal tactics were rated by 3 independent raters individually according to a previously established rating tactic coding system (McRae et al., 2012). An analysis of variance was conducted comparing reappraisal success across groups of the reappraisal tactic most frequently used for each participant. Additionally, total number of reappraisal strategies used was included as a covariate.

Participants endorsed significantly higher negative mood after looking at negative versus neutral pictures, t(41) = 22.70, p < .05). Ratings further indicated that participants were able to significantly decrease how negative they felt when reappraising versus looking at negative pictures, t(41) = 11.95, p < .05. On average, participants' most frequently used reappraisal tactic was used 50.54% (SD = 16.32) of the time. Descriptive statistics on frequency of reappraisal tactics across participants is shown. Regarding the analysis of variance of divergent reappraisal success based on tactic, no significant relationship was found (p > .05). The inclusion of number of reappraisal strategies per participant did not impact the results (p > .05).

The present study did not show a significant difference between reappraisal tactics regarding their cognitive reappraisal success. This replicates past findings and indicates that type of reappraisal tactic used may be not as impactful as using cognitive reappraisal in some fashion. However, reappraisal tactics were not distributed equally across participants. Future studies should include larger samples to attain adequate sample sizes for each reappraisal tactic. Furthermore, participants should be instructed to use a specific reappraisal tactic alongside their self-selected reappraisal preferences to gain insight into the relative success of different reappraisal tactics. Clinical relevance of present findings is discussed.

Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (AgCC) is the congenital absence of all or part of the corpus callosum. Previous research has demonstrated that isolated AgCC results in a pattern of cognitive and psychosocial deficiencies, even when FSIQ is in the normal range (FSIQ > 80; Brown & Paul, 2019). Importantly, individuals with AgCC have been shown to provide narratives containing fewer emotional words, social interactions, and mental inferences on the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT; Turk et al., 2009). Similarly, research has suggested deficits in the elaborative imagination of persons with AgCC when they are providing narrative descriptions of simple animations (Renteria-Vasquez et al., 2021). Such findings raise questions about aesthetic perception in AgCC. While previous research has demonstrated differences in aesthetic perception among other neuropsychological populations (e.g. Parkinson's Disease; Lauring et al., 2019), there is no research reported regarding aesthetic appreciations in AgCC. The present study employed the Assessment of Art Attributes (AAA; Chatterjee et al., 2010) to compare the conceptual and perceptual aspects of aesthetic perception of persons with AgCC to neurotypical control participants. Prior investigation by Bromberger and colleagues (2011) utilized the AAA to examine the aesthetic perception of persons with right hemisphere lesions, finding deviations in judgements of abstractness, symbolism, realism, and animacy– all classified as “conceptual attributes.” Based on these findings, it was predicted that individuals with AgCC would rate paintings differently than neurotypical controls on conceptual attributes, but not on perceptual attributes.

Thirteen persons with AgCC and 49 neurotypical individuals completed the AAA. After completing measures of artistic experience and colorblindness, participants rated 24 paintings on 14 attributes. Balance, color saturation, color temperature, depth, simplicity, and stroke made up the “perceptual scales,” while abstractness, animacy, emotion, objective accuracy, realism, interest, and preference made up the “conceptual scales.”

Following Bromberger and colleagues (2011), average ratings from all control participants were used to rank the 24 paintings for each scale. Spearman's rank-order correlations were then conducted between the rankings of each participant and the average of the controls for each scale. Spearman's rho coefficients were then compared between AgCC and control groups using t-tests, controlling for multiple comparisons. As hypothesized, the AgCC group had significant deviations from the average of the controls (lower rho values) on several conceptual attributes: Abstractness (p = .004, d = .11), emotion (p < .001, d = .12), and interest (p < .001, d = .18), whereas individuals with AgCC deviated on only one perceptual attribute: Simplicity (p = .003, d = .12).

While generally unremarkable in the sensory aspects, persons with AgCC demonstrated greatest differences in three important conceptual aspects of aesthetic perception. This outcome suggests that such higher-order aesthetic appreciations require interhemispheric interactivity. These results further support the hypothesis that decreased elaborative imagination is a fundamental component of AgCC.

As the population continues to age at a rapid pace, an important question that has been raised by clinicians and researchers alike, is “how can we preserve our cognitive abilities as older adults?” Cognitive reserve (CR) is thought to account for inter-individual differences in the cognitive trajectories of older people experiencing similar levels of brain pathology. Being a hypothetical construct, CR cannot be measured directly and therefore, must be operationalized through a combination of demographic and lifestyle variables. While there is sufficient empirical evidence supporting the relationship between individual CR proxies and cognitive functioning, few studies to date have explored which CR proxy is most important in predicting aspects of late-life cognitive functioning and whether composite measure of CR accurately predict cognitive functioning, above and beyond variables traditionally associated with late-life cognitive ability (e.g., age, gender, cardiovascular risk, depression). The present cross-sectional study sought to examine the relationship between three well-established CR proxies—educational attainment, mental workplace demands, crystallized intelligence—and baseline neuropsychological functioning in a clinical sample of older adults without dementia.

Using archival data from 248 older adult patients seen at geriatric specialist hospital in Ontario, Canada, we examined the cumulative and independent effects of educational attainment (years of formal education), mental workplace demands (mean analyst rating for 10 O*NET variables measuring cognitively complex work activities), and crystallized intelligence (score on WASI-I Vocabulary subtest) on performance across several neuropsychological tests assessing i.) verbal memory, ii.) visual memory, iii.) attention, concentration, and working memory, iv.) executive functioning, v.) visuospatial processing, and vi.) language. Composite scores for all six cognitive domains were calculated by averaging converted z-scores on domain-specific tests of neuropsychological functioning. A series of regression models were then constructed to evaluate the relationship between CR and late-life cognitive functioning. To determine the relative importance of each CR proxy, a follow-up relative weight analysis (RWA) was performed for each regression model.

After controlling for age, gender, cardiovascular risk, and depression, our composite measure of CR (average z-score of educational attainment, mental workplace demands, crystallized intelligence) proved to be a significant predictor across all domains of cognitive functioning. Of the six cognitive domains assessed, CR was the most important in predicting higher-order cognitive functions, such as working memory and executive functioning. Out of the three CR proxies, crystallized intelligence was the only CR proxy that significantly predicted performance across all six cognitive domains. RWA revealed that crystallized intelligence was the most important in predicting neuropsychological functioning, followed by educational attainment, and mental workplace demands.

Despite being closely related, all three CR proxies demonstrated differential effects on late-life cognitive functioning. Overall, our findings suggest that the effects of CR are not generalizable across all cognitive domains and appears to be somewhat dependent on the CR proxy used. This study supports the existing literature in demonstrating the robustness of crystallized intelligence as a CR proxy and provides preliminary evidence supporting the idea that tasks that require higher levels of cognitive processing are the most influenced by CR.

The psychometric properties of the Salthouse Listening Span (SLS; Salthouse & Babcock, 1991) task are relatively unknown.

Previous research has demonstrated that SLS performance is positively associated with processing speed and vocabulary (Salthouse, 2005). Further research has documented that SLS performance is useful in differentiating attention deficit/hyperactive disorder from other clinical conditions (Nikolas, Marshall, & Hoelzle, 2019). While the SLS task is purported to measure working memory, relatively little is known about how the task is related to frequently administered neuropsychological measures. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether emotional functioning may affect task performance. The current study investigates associations between frequently administered tasks and the SLS as well as the impact of anxiety and depression on SLS performance.

A battery of neuropsychological tasks and self-report measures was administered to undergraduates [N=161, 75.2% female, Mage=19 (1.06), MGPA=3.5(.35)]. Participant exclusion based on failed performance validity task, non-native English speaking, and/or task incompletion resulted in a final sample of N=131. Participants completed the SLS, a task where one answers questions about sentences read aloud to them, while simultaneously attempting to remember the final word from sentences. SLS performance was quantified two ways: (1) longest span score (SLS-LSS) and (2) total words recalled correctly (SLS-WRC). Anxiety and depression were measured via the Beck Anxiety Index (BAI) and the Beck Depression Index (BDI). Two groups were derived based on participant BAI and BDI responses: low to mild emotional distress (N=99, scores of 0-15 on BAI, BDI, or both) and moderate to severe emotional distress (N=33, scores of 16-63 on the BDI, BAI, or both). Correlations were conducted between the SLS and WAIS-IV: digit span, arithmetic, coding, and symbol search, DKEFS: verbal fluency, and WTAR. A one-way ANOVA was run to examine potential differences in performance on the SLS based on levels of emotional distress.

The SLS-LSS had negligible correlations with verbal fluency, coding, or symbol search performances (r<0.1). SLS-LSS demonstrated a small to medium positive correlation with arithmetic [r(130)=0.17, p=.06], digit span [r(130)=0.27, p=.002], and WTAR [r(130)=.27, p=.002]. SLS-WRC did not demonstrate meaningful correlations with any cognitive domain. Overall, the presence of moderate anxiety and/or moderate depression did not significantly affect performance on SLS- LSS [F(1, 130)= 1.5, p=0.22] or SLS-WRC [F(1, 132)=0.55, p=0.46].

The SLS is a promising cognitive task with little research investigating its psychometric properties. Overall, minimal correlations were observed with tasks quantifying executive functioning, verbal abilities, and processing speed. Lack of strong correlations indicate that more research should be conducted to fully understand what this task is measuring. Moreover, the SLS-WRC score did not appear to have significant correlations across domains, indicating that the SLS-LSS may be more strongly related to working memory and general intelligence. Encouragingly, emotional functioning did not appear to impact performance on this task. While the SLS appears to have some relation to IQ, more research should be conducted to determine what this task measures and what variables may affect task performance.

While attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms, including inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, are normally distributed within the population, features of ADHD have been associated with poor functional outcomes across various domains of life, such as academic achievement and occupational status. However, some individuals with even strong ADHD features show normal or above-average success within these functional domains. Executive dysfunction and emotion regulation abilities are associated with educational attainment and occupational status and may therefore explain some of the heterogeneity in functional outcomes in individuals with mild, moderate, and high levels of ADHD symptoms. In this study, we investigated whether emotion regulation strategy use (i.e., emotion suppression or cognitive reappraisal) and executive function abilities moderate the relationship between ADHD symptoms and occupational status and education attainment in adults.

Data were collected from 109 adults aged 18 - 85 (M = 38.08, SD = 15.54; 70.6% female) from the Nathan Kline Institute Rockland Sample. All participants completed measures of ADHD symptoms (Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scale), emotion regulation strategy use (Emotion Regulation Questionnaire), and executive functioning (composite scores of inhibition, shifting and fluency from the standardized Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System). In this study, executive function abilities and emotion regulation strategy use were tested as potential moderators of the relationship between ADHD symptoms and functional outcomes using hierarchical regression models.

Several two- and three-way interactions predicting occupational status and educational attainment were observed. Education attainment was predicted by hyperactivity and reappraisal (ß = -0.26, p = .006); inattention, shifting, and reappraisal (ß = -0.52, p = .029); inattention, shifting, and suppression (ß = -0.40, p = .049); inattention, fluency, and reappraisal (ß = 0.24, p = .038); hyperactivity, fluency, and reappraisal (ß = 0.27, p = .034); and impulsivity, fluency, and reappraisal (ß = 0.44, p = .004). Occupational status was predicted by inattention and reappraisal, (ß = -0.27, p = .032), hyperactivity and reappraisal (ß = -0.26, p = .004); and impulsivity, fluency, and reappraisal (ß = 0.35, p = .031). Fluency was positively associated with educational attainment when controlling for inattention and impulsivity.

Consistent with the hypothesis, the association between ADHD symptoms and both occupational status and educational attainment were moderated by the interaction between emotion regulation strategy use, executive function abilities domains. The observed interactions suggest that both occupational status and educational attainment may depend heavily on one’s intrinsic abilities and traits. Contrary to previous literature, we found no evidence that ADHD symptoms, emotional regulation strategies were independently associated with either educational attainment or occupational status, but this should be validated in a sample with greater representation of adults with clinically significant ADHD.

Pre- and post-morbid mental health conditions can prolong recovery from concussion and are generally detrimental to athletic performance and quality of life. If psychiatric conditions can be identified in athletes at the time of baseline testing, psychological/psychiatric intervention can be implemented to prevent these complications. Given the time constraints on neuropsychological baseline testing, it is important to have time-efficient screening measures. As such, the purpose of this study was to develop and calibrate a psychiatric screening measure within the Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS) from the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT), which is commonly administered to athletes at baseline, thereby “killing two birds with one stone”: (1) screening for psychiatric conditions and (2) obtaining a baseline measurement of concussion-like symptoms.

Participants were 278 undergraduate students from a Canadian university with a mean age of 21.87 years (SD=4.87, range=18 to 52) and a sex composition of 64% females (n=179, Age: M=21.29 years-old, SD=4.34, range: 18 to 52) and 36% males (n=179, Age: M=22.93 years-old, SD=5.57, range: 18 to 50). Participants were a convenience sample collected via online survey platform in exchange for bonus points toward courses through a participant pool system between January and July 2021. The psychiatric screener consisted of the affective subscale from the PCSS (irritability, sadness, feeling more emotional, nervousness) and the criterion measure was the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales (DASS-42). Statistical analyses were conducted in R v.4.3 and included confirmatory factor analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses. Although a balance was sought between sensitivity and specificity, the former was prioritized given that this is intended as a screening measure. Males and females were analyzed separately as females tend to report more symptoms than males. Mild, moderate, and severe elevations were predicted for depression, anxiety, and stress, based on standard DASS cutoffs.

The CFA analyses revealed good fit for both the PCSS (CFI=.992; TLI=.991; RMSEA=.053; SRMR=.066) and DASS (CFI=.995; TLI=.995; RMSEA=.053; SRMR=.065) models. Cutoffs of >3, >4, and >8 (SENS= .77-.80, SPEC= .52-.83) optimally classified males as having mild, moderate, and severe depression, respectively; and cutoffs of >8, >8, and >9 (SENS= .79-.83, SPEC= .63-.67) optimally classified females as having mild, moderate, and severe depression, respectively. A cutoff of >2 (SENS= .78-.81, SPEC= .35-.39) optimally classified males as having both mild and moderate anxiety (insufficient n in severe group); and >7, >8, and >9 (SENS= .80-.85, SPEC= .63-.68) optimally classified females as having mild, moderate, and severe anxiety. Cutoffs of >5and >8(SENS= .80-.86, SPEC= .70-.85) were optimal for detecting mild and moderate stress in males (insufficient n in severe group); and >8, >8, and >9 (SENS= .80.89, SPEC= .60-.75) were optimal in females.

The affective subscale within the PCSS operates well as a psychiatric screening measure. In general, females had higher cutoffs and the cutoffs for mild and moderate levels of the conditions tended to be similar. Males were less onsistent, with cutoffs varying widely depending on the construct and severity.

The current research framework recommends using biomarkers to further understand Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis, including other contributing factors like cerebrovascular disease. In longitudinal studies of people with neuropathological examination after death, baseline loneliness was associated with lower cognition, faster cognitive decline, and future AD risk, independent of AD pathology. Examination of memory impairment along with AD and cerebrovascular biomarkers, could aid risk reduction efforts earlier in the lifecourse and among populations with more exposure to loneliness. We hypothesized that loneliness is associated with amyloid, vascular, and neurodegeneration biomarkers; with worse memory; and that loneliness increases the susceptibility to biomarker-related memory impairment.

A subset of cognitively unimpaired older adults with available amyloid PET, vascular MRI (white matter hyperintensity volume, WMH), structural MRI (cortical thickness in AD signature regions), neuropsychological testing (memory factor score), dichotomized loneliness data (one item from CES-D), and relevant medical data were drawn from the community-based Washington Heights-Inwood Columbia Aging Project (WHICAP; n=169; covariates included age=81±6 years; 63% women; 49/31/20% Non-Hispanic Black/Non-Hispanic White/Hispanic; education=13±4 years; 32% APOE-e4 carriers). General linear models in the overall sample and stratified by race and ethnicity tested the association between loneliness and AD and cerebrovascular biomarkers, loneliness and memory, and the interaction of loneliness and biomarkers on memory, adjusting for covariates.

Loneliness was endorsed in 18% of participants, marginally associated with older age (2.1 [-0.2, 4.4], p=0.08), was more likely in those with untreated diabetes (13/0.1% lonely/not lonely, p=0.001), associated with lower cortical thickness (-0.05 [-0.09, -0.02], p=0.01), and associated with lower memory (0.3 [-0.6, -0.001], p=0.05). In Non-Hispanic White participants, loneliness was associated with greater WMH volume (0.5 [0.07, 0.82], p=0.03), while in Hispanic participants, loneliness was associated with lower cortical thickness (-0.16 [-0.24, -0.08], p=0.0006). In Non-Hispanic Black participants, loneliness was associated with lower memory (-13 [-26, -0.5], p=0.05), and the association between lower cortical thickness and lower memory was stronger in those that endorse loneliness (5 [0.2, 10], p=0.05). In Hispanic participants, loneliness was associated with higher memory (13 [4, 22], p=0.009), but the association between higher amyloid burden and lower memory was stronger in those that endorse loneliness (-12 [-20, -4], p=0.006); further, loneliness was marginally associated with lower memory (-0.7 [-1.4, 0.1], p=0.09), independently of WMH.

Associations between loneliness and biomarkers may relate to health seeking behavior, reported as treatment status for diabetes, for cerebrovascular burden and general neurodegeneration, but might be more complex for amyloid. The degree to which loneliness increased the susceptibility to amyloid and neurodegeneration-related, but not cerebrovascular-related, memory impairment, specifically, may suggest that domains beyond memory should be considered. Future work should be longitudinal to disentangle the effects of loneliness from related constructs like depression and anxiety, incorporate other AD biomarkers such as hyperphosphorylated tau, and incorporate biological mechanisms (e.g., stress, inflammation) into models of loneliness and AD pathogenesis. Older adults from all backgrounds may be more susceptible to loneliness, which was associated with lower memory; culturally-humble, social support-based interventions may reduce the risk of cognitive impairment.

We measured sex differences in emotion regulation (ER) abilities – relying on exercise of cognitive reappraisal – during an image rating task in adults over 55 years of age with varying degrees of depression symptom severity. We also collected a self-report measure on participants' views of their own ER capacities. Previous research by this group has demonstrated the importance of emotion processing in the context of sex and aging in depression. We hypothesized that females would (1) score higher on the Cognitive Reappraisal Facet of the ERQ, (2) be more successful in utilizing cognitive reappraisal skills in response to negative stimuli; and (3) have self-report scores on the ERQ that more closely match their success at cognitive reappraisal than would males.

Only the first of our three outcome measures was successfully predicted by the model including age, MADRS scores, and sex as predictors. Scores on the ERQ cognitive reappraisal facet with sex accounted for 11.3% of the variance (F=7.344, p=.009). Age and depression symptom severity did not reach significance. Performance on the ERT itself and the correlation between the two were not meaningfully modeled.

Women showed both better cognitive reappraisal abilities overall and more insight into the level of those abilities, findings that fall in line with most ER literature. However, we found that females were also more likely than males to be skewed in the positive or “overconfident” direction; to overestimate those same abilities. This information is useful for clinicians interpreting self-report information in the emotion regulation domain. These findings may not generalize to a more diverse (racially and socioeconomically) population and given the cognitive nature of the reappraisal strategy; these results may not extend to a less educated population. These data will be useful to inform the interpretation of fMRI images from this same experiment.

Insomnia affects 30-45% of the world population, is related to mortality (i.e., auto accidents and job-related accidents), and is related to mood and affect disorders such as anxiety and depression. Better understanding of insomnia via increased research will decrease the burden on insomnia. The neurocognitive model of sleep proposes that conditioned somatic and cognitive hyperarousal develop in response to repeated pairings of sleep-related stimuli with insomnia-related wakefulness. The purpose of this study was to examine the neurocognitive model of sleep using a novel laboratory paradigm, the Sleep Approach Avoidance Task (SAAT). It was hypothesized that individuals who report symptoms of insomnia will display a bias for negative sleep-related images from the SAAT, which is presumably a reflection of cognitive, behavioral and physiological processes associated with hyperarousal. It was also hypothesized that participants who report poor sleep would provide different subjective ratings for negative images (i.e., stronger valence and arousal) than individuals who reported better sleep.

An initial sample of 66 healthy college-aged participants completed the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) the Dysfunctional Attitudes and Beliefs about Sleep (DBAS) scale and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Participants also completed the SAAT. The SAAT was developed to assess sleep-related bias in adults. The SAAT is a visual, joystick controlled reaction time task that measures implicit bias for positive and negative sleep-related images. At the end of the task the participants are also asked to rate each image along three dimensions included valence, arousal and dominance.

There was a positive correlation between the SAAT and the ISI [r(61) = .30, p = .01], indicating that symptoms of insomnia are related to negative approach-related bias for sleep-related images. No other correlations were observed between the SAAT and self-report sleep measures. With regard to rating of images, higher dominance ratings for negative images were correlated with the SAAT [r(62) = .24, p = .03], which indicates that the approach bias for negative images is associated with “being in control.” Multiple linear regression was used to test if ISI scores and dominance ratings for negative images significantly predicted SAAT bias scores. The overall regression was statistically significant [r2 = .13, F(2, 58) = 4.15, p = .02]. ISI scores significantly predicted SAAT scores (ß = .27, p = .04), whereas dominance ratings for negative images did not significantly predict SAAT scores (ß = .20, p = .11). Exploratory correlational analyses were also completed for ratings of images and other sleep self-report measures. Valence ratings for positive sleep-related images were positively correlated with the ESS [r(64) = .36, p = .01], whereas valence ratings for negative sleep-related images were negatively correlated with the ESS [r(64) = -.24, p = .03].

Hypotheses were partially supported with the ISI being the only self-report measure associated with negative bias for sleep-related images. While ratings of dominance are associated with bias for negative sleep-related images, these ratings do not provide unique variance. These findings indicate a cognitive processing bias for sleep-related stimuli among young adult poor sleepers. Limitations, implications for assessment and intervention are discussed.

Trait mindfulness is associated with reduced stress and psychological well-being. However, evidence regarding its effects on cognitive function is mixed and certain facets of trait mindfulness are associated with higher negative affect (NA). This study investigated whether specific mindfulness skills were associated with cognitive performance and affective traits.

165 older adults from the Maine Aging Behavior Learning Enrichment (M-ABLE) Study completed the National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center T-Cog battery, the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, and the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule-SF.

All five facets of trait mindfulness were associated with higher Positive Affect and lower NA, with the exception that Observation was not associated with trait NA. Partial correlations adjusting for age indicated that better episodic memory was associated with Observation, Describing, and Nonreactivity. Verbal fluency performance was associated with Observation, while Working Memory was associated with Nonjudgment. Executive Attention/Processing speed was associated with total mindfulness scores and showed a trend relationship with Nonreactivity.

Mindfulness skills showed specific patterns with affective traits and cognitive function. These findings suggest that the ability to maintain awareness, describe, and experience internal and external states without reacting to them may partly rely on episodic memory. Mindful awareness skills also may depend on frontal and language functions, while the ability to experience emotional states without reacting may require Executive Attention. Global mindfulness and a non-judgmental stance may require auditory attention. Alternatively, mindfulness skills may serve to enhance these functions. Hence, longitudinal research is needed to determine the directionality of these findings.
