Herbicide management information is lacking for recently developed turf-type bahiagrass germplasm. The objective of this study was to evaluate the herbicide tolerance of nine experimental bahiagrass genotypes compared to the industry standard ‘Argentine’. The experimental entries included Argentine and ‘Wilmington’ mutants, and wild-type breeding lines. Plants were grown under greenhouse conditions, and 12 herbicides were applied at 1× and 2× labeled rates. Bentazon, bromoxynil, carfentrazone + 2,4-D + MCPP + dicamba, and carfentrazone were classified as safe. Fluroxypyr, halosulfuron, and triclopyr + clopyralid reduced growth >50% when applied at twice the label rate. Fenoxaprop, sulfentrazone + imazethapyr, and thiencarbazone + iodosulfuron + dicamba reduced growth and caused turfgrass injury above an acceptable threshold (≥20%). In general, the Argentine mutants showed greater herbicide injury compared to the Wilmington mutants. However, metsulfuron exceeded the acceptable injury threshold and stopped growth in all the genotypes, Argentine and genotype WT6 were the least injured by this herbicide. The experimental genotype WT6 consistently showed the greatest herbicide tolerance. Except for one genotype (WT4), the experimental genotypes responded similarly or better than Argentine to the tested herbicides, except for metsulfuron.

Only four herbicides are registered for smooth crabgrass or goosegrass control on creeping bentgrass golf putting greens. None of the four herbicides control weedy grasses for the entire season or control weeds postemergence when applied once at labeled rates. Three of the product labels prohibit repeated use or application during stressful summer conditions. We hypothesized frequently applying herbicides at low doses could provide season-long control of summer grasses while minimizing turf injury. Seven field experiments were conducted on creeping bentgrass putting greens to evaluate various herbicides applied monthly, biweekly, or weekly for postemergence and residual control of goosegrass and smooth crabgrass as well as creeping bentgrass putting green tolerance. Metamifop applied twice monthly at 200 g ai ha−1, topramezone applied eight times weekly at 1.5 g ae ha−1, and siduron applied weekly at 5.6 kg ai ha−1 or four times biweekly at 11 kg ha−1 did not injure creeping bentgrass greater than 10% and maintained creeping bentgrass quality and cover equivalent to nontreated turf. Weekly or biweekly programs of fenoxaprop or quinclorac caused unacceptable injury and quality decline. Metamifop applied monthly and either fenoxaprop program controlled both smooth crabgrass and goosegrass by 97% to 99% throughout the growing season. Programs containing either quinclorac or siduron controlled smooth crabgrass by 99% to 100% but did not control goosegrass greater than 39%. All topramezone programs controlled smooth crabgrass by 69% to 77% and goosegrass by 93% to 98%. In additional studies, siduron applied five times biweekly did not injure creeping bentgrass on putting greens and controlled smooth crabgrass by more than 90% at seasonal, cumulative rates between 17 and 65 kg ai ha−1. This method of frequent, low-dose herbicide treatment to control smooth crabgrass and goosegrass on golf putting greens is novel and currently could be legally implemented with siduron.

Two field studies were conducted in Louisiana to determine the impact of Nealley’s sprangletop on rough rice yield under multiple environments in 2014, 2015, and 2016. The first study evaluated optimal timings of Nealley’s sprangletop removal for optimizing rough rice yields. The second study evaluated the impact of Nealley’s sprangletop densities on rough rice yield. Nealley’s sprangletop was removed with applications of fenoxaprop at 122 g ai ha–1 at 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42 d after emergence (DAE). Nealley’s sprangletop removal at 7 and 14 DAE resulted in higher rough rice yields of 7,880 and 6,960 kg ha–1, respectively, when compared with the rice from the season-long Nealley’s sprangletop competition with a 6,040 kg ha-1 yield. Delaying herbicide application from 7 DAE to 42 DAE resulted in a yield loss of 1,740 kg ha–1. Over the 35-d delay in application, rough rice yield loss from Nealley’s sprangletop interference was equivalent to 50 kg ha–1 d–1. Nealley’s sprangletop densities were established at 1, 3, 7, 13, and 26 plants m–2 by transplanting Nealley’s sprangletop when rice reached the one- to two-leaf stage. At Nealley’s sprangletop densities of 1 to 26 plants m–2, rough rice yields were reduced 10 to 270 kg ha–1, compared with the rice from weed-free plots. Based on regression analysis, Nealley’s sprangletop densities of 1, 35, 70, and 450 plants m–2 reduced rough rice yield 0.14%, 5%, 10%, and 50%, respectively.

Field experiments were conducted in 2014 and 2015 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, to evaluate the residual activity of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase)–inhibiting herbicides for monocot crop injury and weed control. Conventional rice, quizalofop-resistant rice, grain sorghum, and corn crops were evaluated for tolerance to soil applications of six herbicides (quizalofop at 80 and 160 g ai ha–1, clethodim at 68 and 136 g ai ha–1, fenoxaprop at 122 g ai ha–1, cyhalofop at 313 g ai ha–1, fluazifop at 210 and 420 g ai ha–1, and sethoxydim at 140 and 280 g ai ha–1). Overhead sprinkler irrigation of 1.3 cm was applied immediately after treatment to half of the plots, and the crops planted into the treated plots at 0, 7, and 14 d after herbicide treatment. In 2014, injury from herbicide treatments increased with activation for all crops evaluated, except for quizalofop-resistant rice. At 14 d after treatment (DAT) in 2014, corn and grain sorghum were injured 19% and 20%, respectively, from the higher rate of sethoxydim with irrigation activation averaged over plant-back dates. Conventional rice was injured 13% by the higher rate of fluazifop in 2014. Quizalofop-resistant rice was injured no more than 4% by any of the graminicides evaluated in either year. In 2015, a rainfall event occurred within 24 h of initiating the experiment; thus, there were no differences between activation via irrigation or by rainfall. However, as in 2014, grain sorghum and corn were injured 16% and 13%, respectively, by the higher rate of sethoxydim, averaged over plant-back dates. All herbicides provided little residual control of grass weeds, mainly broadleaf signalgrass and barnyardgrass. These findings indicate the need to continue allowing a plant-back interval to rice following a graminicide application, unless quizalofop-resistant rice is to be planted. The plant-back interval will vary by graminicide and the amount of moisture received following the application.

Florpyrauxifen-benzyl is a new herbicide being developed for rice. Research is needed to understand its spectrum of control and optimal tank-mix partners. Multiple greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to evaluate florpyrauxifen-benzyl efficacy and tank-mix compatibility. In greenhouse experiments, florpyrauxifen-benzyl at 30 g ai ha–1 provided ≥75% control of all weed species evaluated (broadleaf signalgrass, barnyardgrass, Amazon sprangletop, large crabgrass, northern jointvetch, hemp sesbania, pitted morningglory, Palmer amaranth, yellow nutsedge, rice flatsedge, smallflower umbrellasedge), and control was similar to or better than other herbicide options currently available in rice. Barnyardgrass was controlled 97% with florpyrauxifen-benzyl at 30 g ha–1, ultimately reducing height (86%) and aboveground biomass (84%). In these field studies at 30 g ha–1, no antagonism was observed when florpyrauxifen-benzyl was tank-mixed with contact (acifluorfen, bentazon, carfentrazone, propanil, and saflufenacil) or systemic (2,4-D, bispyribac, cyhalofop, fenoxaprop, halosulfuron, imazethapyr, penoxsulam, quinclorac, and triclopyr) rice herbicides. Although not every tank-mix or weed species was evaluated, the lack of antagonistic interactions herein highlights the flexibility and versatility of this new herbicide. Once florpyrauxifen-benzyl becomes commercially available, it will be beneficial to tank-mix this new herbicide with others without sacrificing efficacy, so as to apply multiple sites of action together and thus lessen the risk for evolution of herbicide resistance.

Field research was conducted in 1988 and 1989 to compare effects of clethodim, fenoxaprop, haloxyfop, and sethoxydim each applied singly and sequentially at full (1X) and reduced (0.5X) rates on barnyardgrass, bearded sprangletop, and rice. A tank-mixture of propanil plus thiobencarb (2.2 + 2.2 kg ha–1) applied sequentially was included as a standard treatment. Control of barnyardgrass and bearded sprangletop was equal to that of the standard treatment both years with 1X rates of clethodim and fenoxaprop, and with 0.5X rates of clethodim, fenoxaprop, and sethoxydim each applied after propanil; rice so treated produced high grain yields. In 1988, severe rice injury occurred after the second application of clethodim at the 0.5X rate, but rice recovered. Grass control costs were reduced 57% with a single application of fenoxaprop at the 1X rate compared with the standard treatment, but net returns were not different.

The effects of 14 herbicide treatments, tested in the establishment phase, were investigated on timothy productivity in two field experiments conducted at Melfort, Saskatchewan. Satisfactory weed control achieved with chlorsulfuron, metsulfuron, thifensulfuron, bentazon, diclofop plus bromoxynil, and MCPA/mecoprop/dicamba during the establishment year ensured good forage establishment which in turn caused a ‘residual effect’ for 1 to 3 yr increasing individual cut as well as cumulative forage dry matter yields significantly. In the stand established in 1985, when field pennycress (97 m-2) was the dominant weed in the seedling stage, these treatments increased yields 29 to 52% over a 3-yr period. In the stand established in 1986, when common lambsquarters (27 m-2) was the dominant weed, these treatments increased cumulative yields 24 to 44%. Sethoxydim and fenoxaprop, tested alone, caused significant crop injury in both experiments.

Quizalofop controlled 2- to 3-leaf and 5- to 6-leaf red rice better than fluazifop-P, haloxyfop, or sethoxydim applied alone. Red rice control increased when acifluorfen was tank mixed with haloxyfop, fluazifop-P, or sethoxydim. Antagonism was most severe when imazaquin was tank mixed with any of the grass herbicides. The efficacy of sethoxydim, fluazifop-P, and haloxyfop was reduced when applied with chlorimuron or bentazon. In greenhouse experiments, all of the grass herbicides, except for fenoxaprop, reduced fresh weight of red rice 71% or more. Based on fresh weight reduction, acifluorfen, fomesafen, and lactofen only reduced the activity of fluazifop-P, while imazaquin decreased the activity of all grass herbicides.

Inheritance of resistance to diclofop was studied in three wild oat biotypes (designated B, C., and H) from the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Cultivated oat (cultivar ‘Monida’) was crossed, including reciprocals, to three wild oat biotypes. Leaves of each F1 plant were spotted with diclofop as a nondestructive test for resistance or susceptibility. All F1 hybrids were resistant, indicating that resistance is dominant and is under nuclear control. The F2 plants where Monida was the maternal parent were screened with diclofop, and F2 plants of the Monida/C cross were screened with fenoxaprop because the parent C biotype was resistant to fenoxaprop. At lower doses, a 3:1 (R:S) segregation ratio in F2 was observed and at higher doses a 1:3 (R:S) segregation ratio was often observed. The F2:3 families segregated in a 1:2:1 (all resistant : segregating resistant and susceptible all susceptible) ratio when treated with a 1.1-kg ae ha−1 dose of diclofop. This confirms that resistance to diclofop in the B, C, and H biotypes is primarily under monogenic control, with resistance being dominant to susceptibility at lower herbicide doses. At increased doses, susceptibility becomes dominant. Knowledge of the inheritance of resistance may help in the development of containment measures to prevent the spread of herbicide-resistance genes.

Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate sensitivity of red rice ecotypes from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas to soil- and foliar-applied herbicides. Ecotype response to herbicides was variable. Molinate at 4.48 kg ai/ha controlled red rice ecotypes 92 to 100% and cultivars ‘Lemont,’ ‘Mars,’ and ‘Maybelle’ 39 to 63%. Red rice control with thiobencarb at 4.48 kg ai/ha was at least 89%. The tank mixture of fenoxaprop at 0.08 kg ai/ha plus fluazifop-P at 0.10 kg ai/ha controlled red rice and rice cultivars more than for either herbicide applied alone. Red rice and rice cultivar control with paraquat at 0.70 kg ai/ha was 83 to 100%. Blackhulled red rice TX 4 was less sensitive to paraquat and glufosinate than other ecotypes and cultivars. Glufosinate at 1.12 kg ai/ha was required to provide at least 94% control of ecotype TX 4.

Greenhouse trials were conducted to evaluate graminicidal resistance of selected ornamental grasses. Blue fescue cultivars ‘Blue Glow’, ‘Sea Urchin’, ‘Spring Blue’, and ‘Superba’ were resistant to 1× (medium use rate) and 2× rates of fenoxaprop, fluazifop-P, quizalofop, and sethoxydim, whereas fountain grass, ravenna grass, and switchgrass were sensitive. Minor (<20%) visible phytotoxicity was observed on some fescues treated with the 2× rate of fluazifop-P at 14 but not at 69 days after treatment (DAT). Fountain grass, ravenna grass, and switchgrass exhibited severe (>70%) phytotoxicity from all herbicides 69 DAT. Mortality of non-fescues ranged from 55% (fountain grass) to 96% (ravenna grass).

Field experiments conducted from 1990 through 1993 evaluated single and sequential applications of various postemergence graminicides for common bermudagrass control in peanut. UBI-1956 at 70 and 100 g/ha applied early POST (EP) or sequentially, controlled common bermudagrass equivalent to fluazifop-P applied EP or sequentially. Clethodim provided variable common bermudagrass control. Clethodim applied EP provided better control than sethoxydim while control from sequential clethodim applications were equivalent to fluazifop-P. Fenoxaprop-ethyl alone failed to control common bermudagrass while the addition of fluazifop-P to fenoxaprop-ethyl improved control at least 22% in two of three years. Quizalofop applied EP and fenoxaprop applied sequentially provided common bermudagrass control equivalent to fluazifop-P. Fenoxaprop-ethyl or sethoxydim applied once or twice controlled common bermudagrass similarly. Peanut yield increases from common bermudagrass control were erratic.

Field experiments were conducted in 1986 to 1990 to determine the effect of different rates and application times of BAS 514 and dithiopyr alone and in combination on control of large crabgrass and dandelion in Kentucky bluegrass, tall fescue, and perennial ryegrass. Herbicides evaluated were applied PRE, early POST, and late POST. Results indicated that both herbicides provided excellent PRE control in all years. BAS 514 rates ranged from 0.84 to 0.56 kg ai ha-1. Rates of dithiopyr ranged from 0.43 to 0.56 kg ai ha-1. In addition to crabgrass control, both herbicides controlled dandelion, BAS 514 exhibiting slightly better activity than dithiopyr. BAS 514 at 0.84 to 1.12 kg ai ha-1 and dithiopyr at 0.26 to 0.56 kg ai ha-1 resulted in excellent early POST crabgrass control when applied at the one- to three-leaf stage of crabgrass. BAS 514 and dithiopyr applied late POST (2 to 3 tillers of crabgrass) resulted in 63 to 85% control of crabgrass and 29 to 85% control of dandelion at 10 wk after application. No weed control enhancement was evident from tank mixing the two herbicides. Excellent turf safety was demonstrated by both herbicides on all three turf species.

Field experiments were conducted in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 1991 to 1994 to study the competition of littleseed canarygrass and short-spiked canarygrass biotypes in wheat and to evaluate their response to diclofop, fenoxaprop, tralkoxydim, and CGA-184927. Competitive ability of all canarygrass biotypes was similar, though species differed in panicle numbers. All littleseed canarygrass biotypes showed faster growth rate than the short-spiked canarygrass biotypes. Wheat grain yield decreased as canarygrass density increased. For example, 152 and 304 canarygrass plants m–2 reduced wheat yield 32 and 42%, respectively. None of the canarygrass biotypes at any density had any effect on grain yield of wheat when cold and dry weather prevailed during the early stages of growth. CGA-184927 and tralkoxydim were more effective herbicides against all short-spiked canarygrass biotypes than fenoxaprop and diclofop. CGA-184927 and fenoxaprop provided > 98% control of all littleseed canarygrass biotypes; control with tralkoxydim was < 80%; and diclofop gave 82 to 96% control of this weed species. Herbicide control of canarygrass increased wheat yield relative to the weedy control, and only diclofop was phytotoxic to wheat.

Preplant control of mannagrass was greater than 90% with clethodim, glyphosate, sethoxydim, and sulfosate. Glyphosate at 0.5 to 1.0 kg ai/ha controlled mannagrass greater than 97%, and was not increased with any adjuvant. Fenoxaprop applied POST controlled mannagrass 97% but injured rice 33%. Except for fenoxaprop-ethyl, all POST treatments increased rice yields at least 1560 kg/ha more than the non-treated check. Southern watergrass was controlled 79 and 89% with 1.0 kg ai/ha glyphosate and 4.5 kg ai/ha sulfosate, respectively, while control was less than 55% with other herbicides.

Field experiments evaluated barnyardgrass, broadleaf signalgrass, and rhizomatous johnsongrass control with sethoxydim, clethodim, fluazifop-P, quizalofop-P, and fenoxaprop applied alone and with bentazon or chlorimuron when crop oil concentrate or BCH 815 was used. Bentazon strongly antagonized sethoxydim and clethodim. BCH 815 partially reduced the antagonism with sethoxydim and clethodim compared with crop oil concentrate. Chlorimuron was most antagonistic towards fluazifop-P, fenoxaprop, and quizalofop-P, and BCH 815 did not reduce antagonism. Additional experiments evaluated Italian ryegrass control with diclofop applied alone and with bromoxynil, metribuzin, 2,4-D amine, or tribenuron plus thifensulfuron with these adjuvants. The amine formulation of 2,4-D and tribenuron plus thifensulfuron reduced Italian ryegrass control with diclofop, irrespective of the adjuvant.

Field trials were conducted from 1986 to 1988 at Clarkedale, AR, to evaluate selective POST grass herbicides for johnsongrass control in soybeans. Herbicide treatments were trifluralin PPI followed by single and sequential POST applications of fenoxaprop, fluazifop, quizalofop, or sethoxydim. In 1986, sequential applications of sethoxydim and fenoxaprop controlled more johnsongrass 4 WAT than single treatments. In 1987 and 1988, all herbicides except fenoxaprop controlled more than 79% of johnsongrass. The number of johnsongrass stems was reduced by cultural practices and herbicides after 2 yr. The lowest cost of control and the highest average net return over the 3-yr period was obtained with quizalofop.

Field studies were conducted in 1987 and 1988 at Fayetteville and Clarkedale, AR, to evaluate various herbicide treatments for johnsongrass control in soybeans. Herbicide treatments were postemergence applications of sethoxydim, fenoxaprop, fluazifop-P, haloxyfop, quizalofop, imazethapyr, and clethodim. No significant soybean injury was noted in 1987 or 1988 at either location in the johnsongrass experiments. All treatments except those with fenoxaprop and imazethapyr, provided 70 to 90% johnsongrass control. Generally, soybean yields were reduced from treatments that controlled less than 60% of the johnsongrass.

Six postemergence herbicides were applied two consecutive years in single and split applications to compare johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. # SORHA] control in soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] planted in 25- and 76-cm inter-row spacings. Significantly less johnsongrass existed at harvest in the 25-cm spacings than in the 76-cm spacings with split applications of fenoxaprop {(±)-2-[4-[(6-chloro-2-benzoxazolyl)oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid} at 100 g ae/ha, fluazifop {(±)-2-[4-[[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid} at 100 g ae/ha, sethoxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one} at 200 g ai/ha, and SC-1084 {3-hydroxy-4-[4-[[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] pentanoic acid} at 250 g ae/ha. Quizalofop {(±)-2-[4-[(6-chloro-2-quinoxalinyl)oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid} at 70 g ae/ha and haloxyfop {2-[4-[[3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid} at 100 g ae/ha controlled johnsongrass so well that differences between the two row spacings were not significant.

The effects of rainfall on the efficacy of 11 foliar-applied herbicides were evaluated for their control of seedling johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. # SORHA] in greenhouse experiments during 1984 and 1985 at Stoneville, MS. Time intervals between herbicide application and rainfall (at 1.27 cm in 10 ± 0.5 min) ranged from 5 to 60 and 30 to 240 min depending on herbicide classification. In general, the phosphonic acid herbicides glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] and SC-0224 (trimethylsulfonium carboxymethylaminomethylphosphonate) at 0.99 kg ai/ha required rain-free periods ≥240 min to control seedling johnsongrass effectively. The selective postemergence grass herbicides generally required ≥60 min to control seedling johnsongrass effectively when control without rainfall was ≥85%. Among the selective herbicides tested, haloxyfop {2-[4-[[3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl]oxy] phenoxy] propanoic acid} and DPX-Y6202 {ethyl[2-[4-(6-chloro-2-quinoxalinyl)oxy] phenoxy] propionic acid} at 0.06 kg ae/ha required the shortest time between herbicide application and rainfall to be effective. As herbicide rates were reduced, the effects of rainfall increased.
