We decompose θ(M), the twisted index obstruction to a positive scalar curvature metric for closed oriented manifolds with spin universal cover, into a pairing of a twisted K-homology with a twisted K-theory class and prove that θ(M) does not vanish if M is a closed orientable enlargeable manifold with spin universal cover.

In [HL99], the heat operator of a Bismut superconnection for a family of generalized Dirac operators is defined along the leaves of a foliation with Hausdorff groupoid. The Novikov-Shubin invariants of the Dirac operators were assumed greater than three times the codimension of the foliation. It was then shown that the associated heat operator converges to the Chern character of the index bundle of the operator. In [BH08], this result was improved by reducing the requirement on the Novikov-Shubin invariants to one half of the codimension. In this paper, we construct examples which show that this is the best possible result.

In this article, we begin by recalling the inversion formula for the convolution with the box spline. The equivariant cohomology and the equivariant $K$-theory with respect to a compact torus $G$ of various spaces associated to a linear action of $G$ in a vector space $M$ can both be described using some vector spaces of distributions, on the dual of the group $G$ or on the dual of its Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. The morphism from $K$-theory to cohomology is analyzed, and multiplication by the Todd class is shown to correspond to the operator (deconvolution) inverting the semi-discrete convolution with a box spline. Finally, the multiplicities of the index of a $G$-transversally elliptic operator on $M$ are determined using the infinitesimal index of the symbol.

In this note, we study an invariant associated with the zeros of the moment map generated by an action form, the infinitesimal index. This construction will be used to study the compactly supported equivariant cohomology of the zeros of the moment map and to give formulas for the multiplicity index map of a transversally elliptic operator.

We define an analytic index and prove a topological index theorem for a non-compact manifold M0 with poly-cylindrical ends. Our topological index theorem depends only on the principal symbol, and establishes the equality of the topological and analytical index in the group K0(C*(M)), where C*(M) is a canonical C*-algebra associated to the canonical compactification M of M0. Our topological index is thus, in general, not an integer, unlike the usual Fredholm index appearing in the Atiyah–Singer theorem, which is an integer. This will lead, as an application in a subsequent paper, to the determination of the K-theory groups K0(C*(M)) of the groupoid C*-algebra of the manifolds with corners M. We also prove that an elliptic operator P on M0 has an invertible perturbation P+R by a lower-order operator if and only if its analytic index vanishes.

We construct a Baum-Douglas type model for K-homology with coefficients in ℤ/kℤ. The basic geometric object in a cycle is a spinc ℤ/kℤ-manifold. The relationship between these cycles and the topological side of the Freed-Melrose index theorem is discussed in detail. Finally, using inductive limits, we construct geometric models for K-homology with coefficients in any countable abelian group.

We define generalized Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary conditions of product type for Dirac operators associated to C*-vector bundles on the product of a compact manifold with boundary and a closed manifold. We prove a product formula for the K-theoretic index classes, which we use to generalize the product formula for the topological signature to higher signatures.

This paper presents, by example, an index theory appropriate to algebras without trace. Whilst we work exclusively with Cuntz algebras the exposition is designed to indicate how to develop a general theory. Our main result is an index theorem (formulated in terms of spectral flow) using a twisted cyclic cocycle where the twisting comes from the modular automorphism group for the canonical gauge action on each Cuntz algebra. We introduce a modified K1-group for each Cuntz algebra which has an index pairing with this twisted cocycle. This index pairing for Cuntz algebras has an interpretation in terms of Araki's notion of relative entropy.

For any Lie groupoid we construct an analytic index morphism taking values in a modified K-theory group which involves the convolution algebra of compactly supported smooth functions over the groupoid. The construction is performed by using the deformation algebra of smooth functions over the tangent groupoid constructed in [CR06]. This allows us in particular to prove a more primitive version of the Connes-Skandalis longitudinal index theorem for foliations, that is, an index theorem taking values in a group which pairs with cyclic cocycles. As another application, for D a -PDO elliptic operator with associated index ind we prove that the pairing

with τ a bounded continuous cyclic cocycle, only depends on the principal symbol class [σ(D)]∈K0. The result is completely general for étale groupoids. We discuss some potential applications to the Novikov conjecture.

Let G be a locally compact group acting smoothly and properly by isometries on a complete Riemannian manifold M, with compact quotient G\M. There is an assembly map which associates to any G-equivariant K-homology class on M, an element of the topological K-theory of a suitable Banach completion of the convolution algebra of continuous compactly supported functions on G. The aim of this paper is to calculate the composition of the assembly map with the Chern character in entire cyclic homology . We prove an index theorem reducing this computation to a cup-product in bivariant entire cyclic cohomology. As a consequence we obtain an explicit localization formula which includes, as particular cases, the equivariant Atiyah-Segal-Singer index theorem when G is compact, and the Connes-Moscovici index theorem for G-coverings when G is discrete. The proof is based on the bivariant Chern character introduced in previous papers.

We review basic notions and methods of noncommutative geometry and their applications to analysis and geometry on foliated manifolds.

When the index bundle of a longitudinal Dirac type operator is transversely smooth, we define its Chern character in Haefliger cohomology and relate it to the Chern character of the K—theory index. This result gives a concrete connection between the topology of the foliation and the longitudinal index formula. Moreover, the usual spectral assumption on the Novikov-Shubin invariants of the operator is improved.

For a given irrational number $\theta$, we define Toeplitz operators with symbols in the irrational rotation algebra ${{\mathcal{A}}_{\theta }}$, and we show that the ${{C}^{*}}$ algebra $\mathfrak{J}\left( {{\mathcal{A}}_{\theta }} \right)$ generated by these Toeplitz operators is an extension of ${{\mathcal{A}}_{\theta }}$ by the algebra of compact operators. We then use these extensions to explicitly exhibit generators of the group $K{{K}^{1}}\left( {{\mathcal{A}}_{\theta }},\mathbb{C} \right)$. We also prove an index theorem for $\mathfrak{J}\left( {{\mathcal{A}}_{\theta }} \right)$ that generalizes the standard index theorem for Toeplitz operators on the circle.

We prove the vanishing of the equivariant holomorphic torsion forms associated to the holomorphic de Rham complex. We also consider corresponding torsion forms associated to complexes in hypercohomology, for which we give a local formula. Rigidity of certain genera explains part of these formulas. The Lefschetz operators in Hodge theory play a prominent role in the proofs.
