This paper is devoted to the study of generalized tilting theory of functor categories in different levels. First, we extend Miyashita’s proof (Math Z 193:113–146,1986) of the generalized Brenner–Butler theorem to arbitrary functor categories $\mathop{\textrm{Mod}}\nolimits\!(\mathcal{C})$ with $\mathcal{C}$ an annuli variety. Second, a hereditary and complete cotorsion pair generated by a generalized tilting subcategory $\mathcal{T}$ of $\mathop{\textrm{Mod}}\nolimits \!(\mathcal{C})$ is constructed. Some applications of these two results include the equivalence of Grothendieck groups $K_0(\mathcal{C})$ and $K_0(\mathcal{T})$, the existences of a new abelian model structure on the category of complexes $\mathop{\textrm{C}}\nolimits \!(\!\mathop{\textrm{Mod}}\nolimits\!(\mathcal{C}))$, and a t-structure on the derived category $\mathop{\textrm{D}}\nolimits \!(\!\mathop{\textrm{Mod}}\nolimits \!(\mathcal{C}))$.

For a category $\mathcal {E}$ with finite limits and well-behaved countable coproducts, we construct a model structure, called the effective model structure, on the category of simplicial objects in $\mathcal {E}$ , generalising the Kan–Quillen model structure on simplicial sets. We then prove that the effective model structure is left and right proper and satisfies descent in the sense of Rezk. As a consequence, we obtain that the associated $\infty $ -category has finite limits, colimits satisfying descent, and is locally Cartesian closed when $\mathcal {E}$ is but is not a higher topos in general. We also characterise the $\infty $ -category presented by the effective model structure, showing that it is the full sub-category of presheaves on $\mathcal {E}$ spanned by Kan complexes in $\mathcal {E}$ , a result that suggests a close analogy with the theory of exact completions.

Model categories constitute the major context for doing homotopy theory. More recently, homotopy type theory (HoTT) has been introduced as a context for doing syntactic homotopy theory. In this paper, we show that a slight generalization of HoTT, called interval type theory (⫿TT), allows to define a model structure on the universe of all types, which, through the model interpretation, corresponds to defining a model structure on the category of cubical sets. This work generalizes previous works of Gambino, Garner, and Lumsdaine from the universe of fibrant types to the universe of all types. Our definition of ⫿TT comes from the work of Orton and Pitts to define a syntactic approximation of the internal language of the category of cubical sets. In this paper, we extend the work of Orton and Pitts by introducing the notion of degenerate fibrancy, which allows to define a fibrant replacement, at the heart of the model structure on the universe of all types. All our definitions and propositions have been formalized using the Coq proof assistant.

Do quasi-physically based models with more detail perform better than regression or other empirical models? This is a question that was raised many years ago and still remains. In an effort to respond to this question, the author reviews the needs and concerns of users and then divides the large number of models into three classes: (1) screening, (2) research, and (3) planning, monitoring, and assessment. Empirical and causal (physically based) models are contrasted and the advantages and disadvantages of each described. Sources of model uncertainty (properties of data bases, model structure, parameter estimation methods, algorithmic implementation, verification and validation, and future users) that lead to skepticism about models' performance are investigated. Simulation scale and spatial variability are also important considerations. The leading question is then discussed from the perspective of screening, research, and planning, monitoring, and regulatory models.

Dendroidal sets have been introduced as a combinatorial model for homotopy coherent operads. We introduce the notion of fully Kan dendroidal sets and show that there is a model structure on the category of dendroidal sets with fibrant objects given by fully Kan dendroidal sets. Moreover we show that the resulting homotopy theory is equivalent to the homotopy theory of connective spectra.
