In order to study neuropsychological characteristics of subcortical-frontal brain regions function and assessment of their relation with vulnerability to schizophrenia 59 patients and 23 controls were investigated using Luria's neuropsychological methods. The analysis established bilateral abnormalities of the function of prefrontal and profound frontal lobe zones in patients as compared with controls. These abnormalities were more predominate in the left hemisphere. Point biserial correlation coefficients of determined integrative neuropsychological indicators with liability to schizophrenia were 0.39 ± 0.11 and 0.28 ± 0.09, for the left and right brain zones respectively. The obtained data permits discussion of the integrative neuropsychological indicators of subcortical-frontal brain regions as potential markers of liability to schizophrenia and confirms the role of structural and functional brain asymmetry in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia.

Research shows abnormal function of the pre-frontal cortex in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This cortex is involved in the control of executive functions related to planning and execution of goal-oriented strategies, working memory, inhibitions, cognitive flexibility, and selective attention. Selective attention involves focus on the target stimulus, ignoring competing distractions. The Stroop Test (Stroop, 1935) is usually used to evaluate selective attention. This study investigated whether children with ADHD could exhibit modified performance in the Stroop Test. Using a computerized version of this test (Capovilla, Montiel, Macedo, & Charin, 2005), the study compared the reaction times (RTs) of 62 Brazilian children, between 8 and 12 years of age, 31 of whom were diagnosed with ADHD and sent to psychiatric clinics, and 31 without ADHD studying in regular schools. All children with ADHD satisfied the criteria of the DSM-IV-TR and were evaluated with the Conners Abbreviated Questionnaire (Goyette, Conners, & Ulrich, 1978), completed by parents and teachers. The results revealed that children with ADHD exhibit greater interference in RT than children without ADHD. This corroborated the hypothesis that children with ADHD exhibit a deficit in selective attention, consisting in augmented RTs, as measured by the Computerized Stroop Test.

In order to explore if neuropsychological deficits on visual constructional ability could be related to risk eating behaviors, a total of 102 women were evaluated, 51 of the participants had been formally diagnosed with eating disorders and 51 did not. All participants were given the Eating Attitude Test (EAT-40), The Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure and The Tower of London Task. Results revealed the existence of a deficit on visual integration similar to those observed in other studies with diagnosed patients. The group at risk showed a comparatively reduced ability on the tasks and the control participants' execution was on the average. Findings revealed the need for designing studies to evaluate neuropsychological processes as possible risk factors which predict eating disorders.

Se ha encontrado que las deficiencias cognitivas en los esquizofrénicos preceden a la discinesia tardía y coexisten con otros déficit motores. Sin embargo, se sabe poco todavía sobre la prevalencia de las perturbaciones cognitivas en los pacientes con parkinsonismo inducido por neurolépticos. A partir de las publicaciones sobre parkinson idiopático, se infirió que los síntomas extrapiramidales (EPS) se acompañan de disfunción cognitiva. Se dividió a 85 pacientes esquizofrénicos hospitalizados en pacientes que puntuaban alto o bajo en EPS conforme a un criterio establecido (Escala de Simpson Angus, puntuación de corte: 0,4). Las deficiencias cognitivas se evaluaron utilizando un instrumento de autoevaluación que medía perturbaciones del procesamiento de la información.

Los pacientes con puntuaciones altas de EPS mostraron resultados significativamente elevados en seis de las diez subescalas cognitivas y perceptivas (t = 2,1 - 3,1) en comparación con los pacientes con puntuaciones bajas. Se concluye que los pacientes con puntuaciones altas de EPS sufren perturbaciones cognitivas que se suponen muy pertinentes para el tratamiento tanto psicosocial como médico. Los problemas cognitivos, cuando no se toman en consideración, pueden perturbar el cumplimiento terapéutico, la comprensión de la enfermedad y la transferencia de las destrezas aprendidas a la vida cotidiana.

En este estudio se consideraron todos los pacientes con infección por VIH que se habían derivado a nuestro Servicio de Psiquiatría de Enlace entre octubre de 1992 y junio de 1994. Setenta pacientes recibieron evaluación psiquiátrica y valoración médica/neurológica. Cuarenta y siete de estos pacientes se sometieron también a examen cognitivo/ neuropsicológico por medio de la Evaluación Global de la Demencia de Milán (MODA). Los episodios depresivos, los trastornos de adaptación y el abuso de sustancias fueron los diagnósticos encontrados con más frecuencia. Tomando en consideración los datos neuropsicológicos, encontramos que los pacientes sintomáticos rendían peor en las pruebas que los asintomáticos.

En la última década se ha acumulado un gran conjunto de publicaciones con respecto al síndrome del cromosoma X frágil, la causa más común de retraso mental vinculado al cromosoma X. El primer artículo de esta revisión resume los mecanismos genéticos y propiedades de biología molecular (por ejemplo, las repeticiones de tripletes de DNA inestables) peculiares que se han caracterizado desde la detección del gen FMR-1 en 1991. Sin embargo, la pregunta más importante con respecto a la función del gen FMR-1 es todavía una cuestión no resuelta y es preciso investigarla en el futuro. El segundo artículo de esta revisión se dirige al cuadro clínico, el funcionamiento neuropsicológico y las características psicopatológicas de los portadores de la premutación y la mutación completa.
