Epidemiological and clinical trial evidence indicates that n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intake is cardioprotective. Nevertheless, claims that n-6 PUFA intake promotes inflammation and oxidative stress prevail. This narrative review aims to provide health professionals with an up-to-date evidence overview to provide the requisite background to address patient/client concerns about oils containing predominantly unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), including MUFA and PUFA. Edible plant oils, commonly termed vegetable oils, are derived from vegetables, nuts, seeds, fruits and cereal grains. Substantial variation exists in the fatty acid composition of these oils; however, all are high in UFA, while being relatively low in saturated fatty acids (SFA), except for tropical oils. Epidemiological evidence indicates that higher PUFA intake is associated with lower risk of incident CVD and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Additionally, replacement of SFA with PUFA is associated with reduced risk of CVD and T2DM. Clinical trials show higher intake of UFA from plant sources improves major CVD risk factors, including reducing levels of atherogenic lipids and lipoproteins. Importantly, clinical trials show that increased n-6 PUFA (linoleic acid) intake does not increase markers of inflammation or oxidative stress. Evidence-based guidelines from authoritative health and scientific organisations recommend intake of non-tropical vegetable oils, which contain MUFA and n-6 PUFA, as part of healthful dietary patterns. Specifically, vegetable oils rich in UFA should be consumed instead of rich sources of SFA, including butter, tallow, lard, palm and coconut oils.

Empirical reaction progress diagrams showing the trends of major element oxide concentrations (in g/cm3) as functions of bulk density for a diabase saprolite reveal discontinuities in the trends of Al2O3, MgO, H2O+, and nonextractable Fe2O3. The discontinuities coincide with discontinuities in the trends of (1) the kaolinite-smectite 001 peak-intensity ratio, (2) the smectite 002-001 peak intensity ratio, and (3) the smectite basal spacing as functions of bulk density. The discontinuities are apparently related to redox conditions in the weathering profile because they occur at a depth where siderite veins first appear in the saprolite. Oxidizing conditions in the upper part of the profile appear to have favored the formation of Ferich smectite over kaolinite, whereas reducing conditions deeper in the profile favored the formation of kaolinite over Al-rich smectite. These results indicate that where geochemical conditions favor retention of Fe over Al, smectites can form in preference to kaolinite or gibbsite even under conditions of strong leaching.

Mössbauer spectroscopy of dioctahedral phyllosilicates showed that on dehydroxylation iron which originally occupied M(2) and M(l) sites became, respectively, 5- and 6-coordinated. The 6-coordinated sites are very distorted. No migration of cations occurs in the course of heating the specimens for 1–3 hr at 600°–700°C.

By using a combination of several physicochemical methods, different successive stages of the dehydroxylation process could be distinguished: (1) migration of protons; (2) localized dehydroxylation of individual associations without significant change in the overall configuration of the octahedral sheets; and (3) loss of most of the hydroxyl groups with concomitant changes in the cell dimensions. Penetration of Li into the octahedral sheets does not affect the course of the reaction, but reduces the dehydroxylation temperature and the stability of the products.

Dehydroxylation was preceded by or associated with the oxidation of any divalent iron present. Fe3+ derived from Fe2+ was indistinguishable by Mössbauer spectroscopy from iron initially present in the trivalent form. High concentrations of Fe lower the dehydroxylation temperature and reduce the stability of the dehydroxylate to the extent that partial disintegration may precede complete dehydroxylation.

The importance of various sediment components in the oxidation of As(III) (arsenite) to As(V) (arsenate) by freshwater lake sediments in southern Saskatchewan was examined. Treating the sediments with hydroxylamine hydrochloride or sodium acetate to remove Mn greatly decreased the oxidation of As(III). Furthermore, synthetic Mn(IV) oxide was a very effective oxidant with respect to As(III): 216 µg As(V)/ml was formed in solution when 1000 µg As(III)/ml was added to suspensions of 0.1 g of the oxide. These results indicate that Mn in the sediment was probably the primary electron acceptor in the oxidation of As(III). The conversion of As(III) to As(V) by naturally occurring carbonate and silicate minerals common in sediments was not evident in the system studied. Sediment particles >20 µm in size are the least effective in oxidizing As(III); the oxidizing ability of the 5–20-, 2–5-, and <2-µm particle size fractions varies depending on the sediment. The concentration of As(V) in equilibrated solutions after adding increasing amounts of As(III) (as much as 100 µg/ml) to 1 g of the three sediments ranged from approximately 3.5 to 19 µg/ml. Because As(III) is more toxic and soluble than As(V), Mn-bearing components of both the colloidal and non-colloidal fractions of the sediments may potentially detoxify any As(III) that may enter aquatic environments by converting it to As(V). This is very important in reducing the As contamination and in maintaining the ecological balance in aquatic environments.

Oxidation of acetaldehyde molecules adsorbed on Na- and Mg-Wyoming montmorillonite at room temperature (20-25°C) and in N2 atmosphere has been studied by I.R. spectroscopy, A comparison between clay-acetic acid complex and that prepared from acetaldehyde is given. The influence of the nature of the saturating cation as well as the clay pretreatment on this oxidation process are discussed and reaction pathways are proposed. Acetic acid directly adsorbed on the clay surface is almost removed at 110°C, while that produced from the oxidation of the adsorbed acetaldehyde appears to be strongly held. Within a temperature range 180-230°C, the fixed acetic acid molecules dissociate to acetate form; then occurs an interaction of the acetate and the residual acid with the lattice OH of the clay at 200–300°C. This interaction involves the loss of the structural OH and deposition of carbon on the clay surfaces. The thermal decomposition of the residual complex is almost completed at 500–600°C

Structural Fe2+ in montmorillonite is readily oxidized by contact with water, salt solutions or on mild heating. This is shown clearly by the Mössbauer spectra and is associated with a sharpening of the infrared absorption near 880 cm−1. It was inferred that this band comprises the Fe2+—OH—Al and Fe3+—OH—Al deformations. The rate at which oxidation occurs depends on the exchangeable cations. High acidity of the interlayers is conducive to oxidation, as is contact with Cu2+-containing solutions or concentrated H2O2 solutions.

The results show clearly that any chemical treatment of montmorillonite causes changes in the oxidation state of structural iron.

The pH, Eh, electrical conductivity (EC), and the amounts and valency of replaceable iron were measured periodically on Fe2+- and Fe3+-saturated montmorillonite and cation-exchange resin at three temperatures. Differences in the pattern of change of pH, Eh, and EC with time appear to be related more to the histories and modes of preparation of the systems than to intrinsic differences in the hydrolysis of the iron in them. Electron transfer reactions involving crystal components of the clay can cause oxidation of adsorbed Fe2+ ions; the activation energy (Ea) for oxidation on the clay's surface was 6 kcal/mole, less than a third of the activation energy reported for Fe2+ oxidation in solution. In the Fe2+-resin, where Ea = 10.7 kcal/mole, perturbed surface-water molecules may act as electron acceptors enhancing Fe2+ oxidation.

Polymerization and precipitation of the adsorbed iron is affected by the necessity to maintain electroneutrality, the ability of the iron-hydroxy ions and small polymers to move about in the voids of the ion exchanger, and the steric hindrance posed by the matrix of the ion exchanger to the formation of large polymers. In resin, little or no iron precipitates, probably due both to steric hindrance and the inability of the resin to release ionic components to maintain electroneutrality. In clays, steric hindrance is small, and Al and Mg are released from the crystal to maintain electroneutrality, thus the precipitation of iron is abundant and is controlled by the rate of release of Al and Mg from the crystal.

The roles of different forms of Fe(III) impurities in a hectorite with respect to the oxidation of benzidine in aqueous suspension have been evaluated using electron spin resonance and UV-visible spectroscopy. Natural surface-adsorbed Fe(III) showed no detectable activity in the oxidation process, while very small quantities of structural octahedral Fe(III) apparently promoted a relatively rapid conversion to the radical cation. However, extremely small quantities of benzidine were oxidized in comparison to the exchange capacity of the clay. Freshly adsorbed Fe3+ cations effectively oxidized benzidine, but lost much of this ability upon aging. The Fe(III)-benzidine electron transfer could be distinguished from an O2-benzidine reaction, since the latter reaction was slow and limited by the rate of O2 diffusion into the clay-water system. The O2-benzidine reaction was also inhibited at high pH. The existence of two reaction mechanisms and the involvement of only a small fraction of the total structural iron, as shown by comparison of the hectorite and a montmorillonite, may explain the conflicting interpretations in the literature. The benzidine blue reaction not only requires an oxidizing agent to form the radical, but also a clay surface to adsorb and stabilize it against further oxidation.

The role of adsorbed and structural Fe3+ in palygorskite and sepiolite with respect to the oxidation of hydrocortisone in aqueous suspension has been evaluated using electron spin resonance and UV-visible spectroscopy. Natural surface-adsorbed Fe3+ showed an important activity in the oxidation process, although smaller than octahedral Fe3+. The kinetics of oxidative degradation of hydrocortisone by palygorskite appear to be composed of two apparent first order reactions which may be associated with two kinds of sites for Fe in palygorskite. The lower oxidizing power of sepiolite for hydrocortisone degradation is due to its very low Fe3+ content.

Potentiometric titration analysis was used to examine the hydrolysis behavior of Fe2+ Fe3+, and Al3+ in pure solution and in mixture, in order to evaluate the potential for coprecipitation and mixed solid-phase formation. Mixtures of Fe3+ and Al3+ did not interact during neutralization; base consumed in their respective buffer regions was equivalent to the total metal added. Fe2+-Al3+ solutions, however, showed excess base consumption in the Al3+ buffer region, indicating hydrolysis of Fe2+ at lower than normal pH. Ferric/ferrous iron analyses of systems at the Al endpoint (pH 5.5) showed amounts of oxidized Fe equivalent to the excess base consumption (∼10% of total Fe), with substantial amounts of Fe2+ sorbed to or occluded within Al polymers present. Increased electrolyte levels or the presence of SO42- inhibited oxidation and sorption of Fe2+ on Al surfaces, suggesting that Fe hydrolysis and oxidation was catalyzed at the surfaces. Increasing Al3+: Fe2+ ratios in the titrated solutions also increased the amount of Fe2+ coprecipitation, supporting a surface-mediated reaction mechanism. Ferrous iron oxidation was sensitive to O2 levels, which also affected the amount of coprecipitation. These findings suggest that surface-facilitated oxidation of Fe2+ may be important in the formation of mixed Fe-Al mineral phases in dilute soil solutions.

Synthetic sodium bimessite, having a cation-exchange capacity (CEC) of 240 meq/100 g (cmol/kg) was transformed into Li, K, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ni, and Mn2+ cationic forms by ion exchange in an aqueous medium. Competitive adsorption studies of Ni and Ba vs. Mg showed a strong preference for Ni and Ba by bimessite. The product of Mg2+-exchange was buserite, which showed a basal spacing of 9.6 Å (22°C, relative humidity (RH) = 54%), which on drying at 105°C under vacuum collapsed to 7 Å. Of the cation- saturated bimessites with 7-Å basal spacing, only Li-, Na-, Mg-, and Ca-bimessites showed cation exchange.

Heating bimessite saturated with cations other than K produced a disordered phase between 200° and 400°C, which transformed to well-crystallized phases at 600°C. K-exchanged bimessite did not transform to a disordered phase; rather a topotactic transformation to cryptomelane was observed. Generally the larger cations, K, Ba, and Sr, gave rise to hollandite-type structures. Mn- and Ni-bimessite transformed to bixbyite-type products, and Mg-bimessite (buserite) transformed to a hausmannite-type product. Li-bimessite transformed to cryptomelane and at higher temperature converted to hausmannite. The hollandite-type products retained the morphology of the parent bimessite. The mineralogy of final products were controlled by the saturating cation. Products obtained by heating natural bimessite were similar to those obtained by heating bimessite saturated with transition elements.

The ferrous iron content of two vermiculitized biotites decreased by treatment with 0.1 N salts of copper at 70°C from 9.1–14% to 1.8–2.6%. Presumably, interlayer copper ions acted as a catalyst (here, an electron carrier) for the oxidation of iron by dissolved oxygen. The oxidized iron was ejected from the structure and formed crystalline iron minerals, such as hematite and goethite. Weight loss determinations, chemical, and X-ray powder diffraction data suggest that Cu(II) ions were polymerized to hydroxy-hydrous compounds in the interlayer space. Poor exchangeability of the resultant complex is attributed to the formation of strong electrostatic attractions between OH groups of the interlayer complexes and silicate oxygens.

Mineralogical weathering sequences in sediments overlying lignite beds were investigated in a core (27 m deep) from Calvert, Robertson County, northeast Texas. Weathering trends were evaluated based on the properties and relative distributions of both the expandable and non-expandable minerals. The sulfide minerals in these sediments are the most susceptible to weathering and were only observed in the unaltered (reduced) zone below 7 m. Oxidation of the sulfides has resulted in the formation of jarosite and gypsum in the upper 7 m of the core (oxidized zone). The oxidized zone is further characterized by reddish brown colors (high chroma), a greater quantity of dithionite-extractable iron, and absence of chlorite. Although the major clay minerals in these sediments (smectite, kaolinite, mica) are largely detrital, weathering has resulted in an increase in the content of kaolinite and a decrease in the content of mica towards the surface. The mica appears to have altered to a high-charge smectite characterized by basal spacings of 32 Â after intercalation with octadecylammonium cations. The high-charge smectite is most abundant in the soil horizons at the top of the core and gradually decreases with depth. A low-charge smectite is the most abundant species in the un weathered parent sediments and increases with depth. Key Words—Lignite, Oxidation, Reclamation, Smectite, Soil, Weathering.

The oxidation of As(III) to As(V) by K-birnessite was examined at different temperatures, pHs, and birnessite/As(III) ratios. Experiments ranged in duration from 5 to 64 hr, and solution and solid products were determined at several intervals. All experiments showed that the reaction produced large amounts of K+ to solution and very little Mn2+. As(V) was released to solution and incorporated into the K-birnessite. The oxidation was initially rapid and then slowed. The oxidation of As(III) was probably facilitated initially by autocatalytic Mn-As(V) reactions occurring mostly in the interlayer, in which large amounts of As(V) and K+ could be easily released to solution. The reaction also slowed when interlayer Mn was exhausted by forming Mn-As(V) complexes. Mn(IV) could only be acquired from the octahedral sheets of the birnessite. The two-stage reaction process proposed here depended on the layered structure of birnessite, the specific surface, and presence of exchangeable cations in K-birnessite.

The rate and extent of oxidation of dihydroxybenzenes (DHB) to quinones in acetate-buffered suspensions of synthetic birnessite were studied using Mn dissolution to monitor reaction progress. Concentration of free Mn2+ in the aqueous phase was continuously monitored by electron spin resonance, and ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy was utilized to quantify dihydroxybenzene and quinone concentrations. Although dissolution of the oxide and release of Mn2+ to solution generally accompanied phenol oxidation, a threshold oxidation level had to be exceeded before Mn2+ appeared in solution. Once this threshold was surpassed, the mole quantity of Mn2+ dissolved equaled the mole quantity of organic oxidized for 1,4-DHB, but exceeded the quantity of organic oxidized for 1,2-DHB. Thus, the latter phenol was more efficient in dissolving the oxide. Soluble phosphate suppressed Mn2+ release without influencing the degree of organic oxidation, suggesting that phosphate chemically interacted with reduced Mn to hinder its dissolution. UV spectra provided tentative evidence for the transitory existence of Mn3+-1,4-DHB complexes in the solution phase.

Infrared spectra of the birnessite after reaction with 1,4-DHB indicated some new features, which may have been a result of the reduction of surface Mn atoms to the 3+ oxidation state. These features were not present after reaction with 1,2-DHB, confirming that the latter phenol efficiently dissolved the oxide to release Mn2+. Although the initial Mn dissolution was very rapid and was attributed to a surface reaction, further slow Mn release accompanied by more complete oxidation of the phenols suggests a process limited by the rate of dissolution of the solid.

The effects of reduction and reoxidation of octahedral Fe3+ on the exchange of structural hydrogen in nontronite were determined using tritium (3H) as a label element. The uptake of H from the surrounding solution of nontronite suspensions increased as the reduction of structural Fe3+ increased. Similarly, the loss of H from the structure increased as the reduction increased. The results are generally consistent with a reduction mechanism involving the loss of structural OH, leaving the affected Fe sites with less than six-fold coordination. The attenuation of increased negative charge on the clay layer, however, was less than predicted by such a mechanism.

During the reoxidation of reduced nontronite in suspension, about one-third of the H remaining as part of the structure following reduction was lost, whereas twice that amount of H was incorporated into the structure from the surrounding solution. A reoxidation mechanism is proposed whereby H2O from the surrounding solution is incorporated into the mineral structure followed by the elimination of a hydrogen ion, returning the Fe to six-fold coordination. This mechanism implies the reversibility of Fe reduction in nontronite.

An end-member natroalunite of composition (K0.04Na0.96)(Al2.98Fe0.02)(SO4)2(OH)6 occurs in saprolitic clays in a laterite profile developed over Deccan Trap basalts at Matanumad in the Kutch region of Gujarath state, India. Pseudocubic natroalunite crystals, ranging from 0.5 to 1 µm in size, have replaced pseudohexagonal, 2-µm-size platelets of kaolinite. The reverse reaction (kaolinization of natroalunite) has also been observed in the laterites and bauxites immediately adjacent to the saprolite. The kaolinite crystallites that replaced natroalunite occur as a mosaic of anhedral platelets that range in size from 0.1 to 0.3 µm. The formation of natroalunite at Matanumad postdates the laterization of the basalts. It is related to the post-diagenetic formation of sulfuric acid-rich solutions by the oxidation of pyrite in the Eocene-Oligocene black shales of the Matanumad basin. The kaolinitic clays at the top of the saprolite zone have been intensely altered by the acidic solutions, leading to a high concentration of natroalunite.

Ferruginous clay partings in limestones of the marine, largely evaporitic, Upper Triassic Mohila Formation (Makhtesh Ramon, Israel) contain hexagonal plates and cube-like bodies up to one millimeter across. Analyses by electron microscopy, infrared and Mössbauer spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction indicate that the matrix contains Fe-rich anhedral kaolinite, up to 100 μm in size; the hexagonal plates are composed of euhedral, Fe-free kaolinite covered with well-developed acicular goethite and platy hematite (0.5 to 2 μm in size), and the cubes consist of fine-grained goethite with minor amounts of kaolinite. The anhedral kaolinite appears to be detrital, the hexagonal plates to be authigenic, and the cubes to be pseudomorphs after pyrite. Oxidation appears to have altered Fe-rich kaolinite and pyrite to Fe-free kaolinite, goethite, and hematite and was accompanied by recrystallization and pseudomorphic replacement. The alteration process was slow and was probably induced by a small increase in pH and in the Al/Fe ratio, resulting from oxidation of reduced components (pyrite, ferrous carbonate, organic matter) in a semiclosed, sediment-mud system. Overlying kaolinitic flint clay deposits may be the final product of a similar process.
