In this note we provide an analytical proof of the zero helicity condition for systems governed by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation (GPE). The proof is based on the hydrodynamic interpretation of the GPE, and the direct use of Noether's theorem by applying Kleinert's multi-valued gauge theory. As a by-product we also demonstrate the conservation and quantization of the circulation for the GPE.

The Hall–Vinen–Bekharevich–Khalatnikov (HVBK) model is widely used to numerically study quantum turbulence in superfluid helium. Based on the two-fluid model of Tisza and Landau, the HVBK model describes the normal (viscous) and superfluid (inviscid) components of the flow using two Navier–Stokes type of equations, coupled through a mutual friction force term. We derive transport equations for the third-order moments for each component of velocity involving the fourth-order moments, which are classical probes for internal intermittency at any scale, and revealing the probability of rare and strong fluctuations. Budget equations are assessed through direct numerical simulations of the HVBK flow. We simulate a forced homogeneous isotropic turbulent flow with Reynolds number of the normal fluid (based on Taylor's microscale) close to 100. Values from 0.1 to 10 are considered for the ratio between the normal and superfluid densities. For these flows, an inertial range is not discernible and the restricted scaling range approach is used to take into account the finite Reynolds number (FRN) effect. We analyse the importance of each term in budget equations and emphasize their role in energy exchange between normal and superfluid components. Some interesting features are observed: (i) transport and pressure-related terms are dominant, similarly to single-fluid turbulence; and (ii) the mathematical signature of the FRN effect is weak despite the low value of the Reynolds number. The flatness of the velocity derivatives is finally studied through the transport equations and their limit for very small scales, and it is shown to gradually increase for lower and lower temperatures, for both normal fluid and superfluid. This similarity highlights the strong locking of the two fluids. The flatness factors are also found in reasonable agreement with classical turbulence.

We take advantage of the extremely small kinematic viscosity of superfluid $^4$He to investigate the propagation of macroscopic vortex rings at Reynolds numbers between $2 \times 10^4$ and $4 \times 10^6$. These inhomogeneous flow structures are thermally generated by releasing short power pulses into a small volume of liquid, open to the surrounding bath through a vertical tube $2$ mm in diameter. We study specifically the ring behaviour between $1.30$ and $1.80$ K using the flow visualization and second sound attenuation techniques. From the obtained data sets, containing more than $2600$ realizations, we find that the rings remain well-defined in space and time for distances up to at least $40$ tube diameters, and that their circulation depends significantly on the travelled distance, in a way similar to that observed for turbulent vortex rings propagating in Newtonian fluids. Additionally, the ring velocity and circulation appear to be influenced solely by a single, experimentally accessible parameter, combining the liquid temperature with the magnitude and duration of the power pulse. Overall, our results support the view that macroscopic vortex rings moving in superfluid $^4$He closely resemble their Newtonian analogues, at least in the absence of significant thermal effects and at sufficiently large flow scales.

In this paper, we determine the instability effects of a phase twist superposed on a quantum vortex defect governed by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation. For this, we consider the modified form of the equation in two cases: when a uniform phase twist is present everywhere in the condensate, and when the defect is subject to a localized phase twist confined to the defect healing region. In the first case, we show that a secondary, new defect is produced as manifestation of an Aharonov–Bohm type effect. In the second case, we prove that due to energy minimization, the defect changes its configurational energy by converting localized twist to writhe. This mechanism, typical of classical elastic systems, is shown to occur also in quantum defects, and it may find useful applications in science and technology.

Using an improved numerical code we investigate the creation and evolution of quantum knots and links as defects of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation. The particular constraints put on quantum hydrodynamics make this an ideal context for application of geometric and topological methods to investigate dynamical properties. Evolutionary processes are classified into three generic scenarios representing (i) direct topological cascade and collapse, (ii) structural and topological cycles, and (iii) inverse topological cascade of complex structures. Several examples and test cases are studied; the head-on collision of quantum vortex rings and the creation of a trefoil knot from initially unlinked, unknotted loops are realized for the first time. Each type of scenario is studied by carrying out a detailed evaluation of fundamental geometric and dynamical properties associated with evolution. Direct topological cascade that governs the decay of complex structures to small-scale vortex rings is identified by writhe measures, while picks of total curvature are found to provide a clear signature of reconnection events. We demonstrate that isophase minimal surfaces spanning knots and links have a privileged role in the decay process by detecting surface energy relaxation of complex structures. Minimal surfaces are shown to be critical markers for energy and prove to be appropriate detectors for the evolution of complex systems.

The quantum effects in plasmas can be described by the hydrodynamics containing the continuity and Euler equations. However, novel quantum phenomena are found via the extended set of hydrodynamic equations, where the pressure evolution equation and the pressure flux third-rank tensor evolution equation are included. These give the quantum corrections to the Coulomb interaction. The spectra of the Langmuir waves and the spin-electron acoustic waves are calculated. The application of the pressure evolution equation ensures that the contribution of pressure in the Langmuir wave spectrum is proportional to $(3/5)v_{\textrm {Fe}}^{2}$ rather than $(1/3)v_{\textrm {Fe}}^{2}$, where $v_{\textrm {Fe}}$ is the Fermi velocity.

Particles are a widespread tool for obtaining information from fluid flows. When Eulerian data are unavailable, they may be employed to estimate flow fields or to identify coherent flow structures. Here we numerically examine the possibility of using particles to capture the dynamics of isolated vortex rings propagating in a quiescent fluid. The analysis is performed starting from numerical simulations of the Navier–Stokes and the Hall–Vinen–Bekarevich–Khalatnikov equations, respectively describing the dynamics of a Newtonian fluid and a finite-temperature superfluid. The flow-induced positions and velocities of particles suspended in the fluid are specifically used to compute the Lagrangian pseudovorticity field, a proxy for the Eulerian vorticity field recently employed in the context of superfluid $^{4}\textrm {He}$ experiments. We show that, when calculated from ideal Lagrangian tracers or from particles with low inertia, the pseudovorticity field can be accurately used to estimate the propagation velocity and the growth of isolated vortex rings, although the quantitative reconstruction of the corresponding vorticity fields remains challenging. On the other hand, particles with high inertia tend to preferentially sample specific flow regions, resulting in biased pseudovorticity fields that pollute the estimation of the vortex ring properties. Overall, this work neatly demonstrates that the Lagrangian pseudovorticity is a valuable tool for estimating the strength of macroscopic vortical structures in the absence of Eulerian data, which is, for example, the case for superfluid $^{4}\textrm {He}$ experiments.

The leapfrogging of coaxial vortex rings is a famous effect which has been noticed since the times of Helmholtz. Recent advances in ultra-cold atomic gases show that the effect can now be studied in quantum fluids. The strong confinement which characterises these systems motivates the study of leapfrogging of vortices within narrow channels. Using the two-dimensional point vortex model, we show that in the constrained geometry of a two-dimensional channel the dynamics is richer than in an unbounded domain: alongside the known regimes of standard leapfrogging and the absence of it, we identify new regimes of image-driven leapfrogging and periodic orbits. Moreover, by solving the Gross–Pitaevskii equation for a Bose–Einstein condensate, we show that all four regimes exist for quantum vortices too. Finally, we discuss the differences between classical and quantum vortex leapfrogging which appear when the quantum healing length becomes significant compared to the vortex separation or the channel size, and when, due to high velocity, compressibility effects in the condensate becomes significant.

Thermal counterflow of superfluid $^4$He is investigated experimentally, by employing the particle tracking velocimetry technique. A flat heater, located at the bottom of a vertical channel of square cross-section, is used to generate this unique type of thermally driven flow. Micronic solid particles, made in situ, probe this quantum flow and their time-dependent positions are collected by a digital camera, in a plane perpendicular to the heat source, away from the channel walls. The experiments are performed at relatively large heating powers, resulting in fluid velocities exceeding $10\ \textrm {mm}\,\textrm {s}^{-1}$, to ensure the existence of sufficiently dense tangles of quantized vortices. Within the investigated parameter range, we observe that the particles intermittently switch between two distinct motion regimes, along their trajectories, that is, a single particle can experience both regimes while travelling upward. The regimes can be loosely associated with fast particles, which are moving away from the heat source along almost straight tracks, and to slow particles, whose erratic upward motion can be said to be significantly influenced by quantized vortices. We propose a separation scheme to study the properties of these regimes and of the corresponding transients between them. We find that particles in both regimes display non-classical, broad distributions of velocity, which indicate the relevance of particle–vortex interactions in both cases. At the same time, we observe that the fast particles move along straighter trajectories than the slow ones, suggesting that the strength of particle–vortex interactions in the two regimes is notably different.

The equations governing the evolution of quantum vortex defects subject to twist are derived in standard hydrodynamic form. Vortex defects emerge as solutions of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation, that by Madelung transformation admits a hydrodynamic description. Here, we consider a vortex defect subject to superposed twist due to the rotation of the phase of the wave function. We prove that, when twist is present, the corresponding Hamiltonian is non-Hermitian and determine the effect of twist on the energy expectation value of the system. We show how twist diffusion may trigger linear instability, a property directly related to the non-Hermiticity of the Hamiltonian. We derive the correct continuity equation and, by applying defect theory, we obtain the correct momentum equation. Finally, by coupling twist kinematics and vortex dynamics we determine the full set of hydrodynamic equations governing quantum vortex evolution subject to twist.

We use an online database of a turbulent channel-flow simulation at $Re_\tau =1000$ (Graham et al. J. Turbul., vol. 17, issue 2, 2016, pp. 181–215) to determine the origin of vorticity in the near-wall buffer layer. Following an experimental study of Sheng et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 633, 2009, pp.17–60), we identify typical ‘ejection’ and ‘sweep’ events in the buffer layer by local minima/maxima of the wall stress. In contrast to their conjecture, however, we find that vortex lifting from the wall is not a discrete event requiring $\sim$1 viscous time and $\sim$10 wall units, but is instead a distributed process over a space–time region at least $1\sim 2$ orders of magnitude larger in extent. To reach this conclusion, we exploit a rigorous mathematical theory of vorticity dynamics for Navier–Stokes solutions, in terms of stochastic Lagrangian flows and stochastic Cauchy invariants, conserved on average backward in time. This theory yields exact expressions for vorticity inside the flow domain in terms of vorticity at the wall, as transported by viscous diffusion and by nonlinear advection, stretching and rotation. We show that Lagrangian chaos observed in the buffer layer can be reconciled with saturated vorticity magnitude by ‘virtual reconnection’: although the Eulerian vorticity field in the viscous sublayer has a single sign of spanwise component, opposite signs of Lagrangian vorticity evolve by rotation and cancel by viscous destruction. Our analysis reveals many unifying features of classical fluids and quantum superfluids. We argue that ‘bundles’ of quantized vortices in superfluid turbulence will also exhibit stochastic Lagrangian dynamics and satisfy stochastic conservation laws resulting from particle relabelling symmetry.

Macroscopic vortex rings are generated thermally in superfluid 4He, between 1.28 and 1.95 K, by applying a brief voltage pulse to a resistive heater located below a circular vertical tube 5 mm in diameter and 20 mm high. The rings form above the tube and propagate upward with velocities of the order of $10~\text{mm}~\text{s}^{-1}$, resulting in Reynolds numbers up to $10^{5}$. We visualize their cross-section, of size comparable with the tube diameter, by capturing the motions of relatively small solid deuterium particles, previously dispersed in the quiescent bath of superfluid 4He. We employ particle positions and velocities to compute the Lagrangian pseudovorticity, which can be seen as a measure of the ring strength and which allows us to identify and track these objects. We thus obtain time-dependent sizes, positions and velocities of the vortex rings. We show that, in the range of investigated parameters, these rings behave as if they were turbulent vortex rings moving in classical viscous fluids, at least in the direction of ring propagation. The outcome reinforces the view that the study of turbulent flows of superfluid 4He is not only interesting in its own right, but that it can also contribute to our current understanding of fluid turbulence in general.

We show experimentally that the mechanisms of energy transport in turbulent flows of superfluid $^{4}\text{He}$ are strikingly different from those occurring in turbulent flows of viscous fluids. We argue that the result can be related to the role played by quantized vortices in this unique type of turbulence. The flow-induced motions of relatively small particles suspended in the liquid reveal that, for scales of the order of the mean distance between the vortices, the particles do not tend on average to decelerate faster than they accelerate, whereas, at larger scales, a classical-like asymmetry is recovered. It follows that, in the range of investigated parameters, flight-crash events are less apparent than in classical turbulence. We specifically link the outcome to the time symmetry of quantized vortex reconnections observed at scales comparable to the typical particle size.

We investigate cryogenic flows of liquid 4He between two grids oscillating in phase, at temperatures ranging from approximately 1.3 to 2.5 K, resulting in suitably defined Reynolds numbers up to $10^{5}$. We specifically study the flow-induced motions of small particles suspended in the fluid by using the particle tracking velocimetry technique. We focus on turbulent flows of superfluid 4He that occur below approximately 2.2 K and are known to display, in certain conditions, features different from those observed in flows of classical viscous fluids, such as water. We find that, at large enough length scales, larger than the mean distance between quantized vortices, representing the quantum length scale of the flow, the shapes of the velocity and velocity increment statistical distributions are very similar to those obtained in turbulent flows of viscous fluids. The experimental outcome strongly supports the view that, in the range of investigated parameters, particles probing flows of superfluid 4He behave as if they were tracking classical flows.

The scaling laws for the reconnection of isolated pairs of quantised vortices are characterised by numerically integrating the three-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii equations, the simplest mean-field equations for a quantum fluid. The primary result is the identification of distinctly different temporal power laws for the pre- and post-reconnection separation distances $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}(t)$ for two configurations. For the initially anti-parallel case, the scaling laws before and after the reconnection time $t_{r}$ obey the dimensional $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}\sim |t_{r}-t|^{1/2}$ prediction with temporal symmetry about $t_{r}$ and physical space symmetry about the mid-point between the vortices $x_{r}$. The extensions of the vortex lines close to reconnection form the edges of an equilateral pyramid. For all of the initially orthogonal cases, $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}\sim |t_{r}-t|^{1/3}$ before reconnection and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}\sim |t-t_{r}|^{2/3}$ after reconnection are respectively slower and faster than the dimensional prediction. For both configurations, smooth scaling laws are generated due to two innovations. The first innovation is to use an initial low-energy vortex-core density profile that suppresses unwanted density fluctuations as the vortices evolve in time. The other innovation is the accurate identification of the position of the vortex cores from a pseudo-vorticity constructed on the three-dimensional grid from the gradients of the wave function. These trajectories allow us to calculate the Frenet–Serret frames and the curvature of the vortex lines, secondary results that might hold clues for the origin of the differences between the scaling laws of the two configurations. Reconnection takes place in a reconnection plane defined by the average tangents $\boldsymbol{T}_{av}$ and curvature normal $\boldsymbol{N}_{av}$ directions of the pseudo-vorticity curves at the points of closest approach, at time $t\approx t_{r}$. To characterise the structure further, lines are drawn that connect the four arms that extend from the reconnection plane, from which four angles $\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}_{i}$ between the lines are defined. Their sum is convex or hyperbolic, that is $\sum _{i=1,4}\unicode[STIX]{x1D703}_{i}>360^{\circ }$, for the orthogonal cases, as opposed to the acute angles of the pyramid found for the anti-parallel initial conditions.

The linear response of a superfluid, rotating uniformly in a cylindrical container and threaded with a large number of vortex lines, to an impulsive increase in the angular velocity of the container is investigated. At zero temperature and with perfect pinning of vortices to the top and bottom of the container, we demonstrate that the system oscillates persistently with a frequency proportional to the vortex line tension parameter to the quarter power. This low-frequency mode is generated by a secondary flow analogous to classical Ekman pumping that is periodically reversed by the vortex tension in the boundary layers. We compare analytic solutions to the two-fluid equations by Chandler & Baym (J. Low Temp. Phys., vol. 62, 1986, pp. 119–142) with the spin-up experiments by Tsakadze & Tsakadze (J. Low Temp. Phys., vol. 39, 1980, pp. 649–688) in helium II and find that the frequency agrees within a factor of four, although the experiment is not perfectly suited to the application of linear theory. We argue that this oscillatory Ekman pumping mode, and not Tkachenko modes, provides a natural explanation for the observed oscillation. In neutron stars, the oscillation period depends on the pinning interaction between neutron vortices and flux tubes in the outer core. Using a simplified pinning model, we demonstrate that strong pinning can accommodate modes with periods of days to years, which are only weakly damped by mutual friction over longer time scales.

We derive the local induction approximation (LIA) for a quantum vortex filament in the arclength coordinate frame where the tangent vector is the unknown function. The equation for the tangent vector to the filament is then converted to a potential form, which ends up being a type of nonlinear Schrödinger equation that governs the tangential LIA model (T-LIA). Such a formulation was previously derived by Umeki for the standard fluid model (in the absence of superfluid friction terms). While it is challenging to generalize many of the exact solutions found for the standard LIA to the quantum LIA model, we demonstrate that the T-LIA model facilitates this generalization nicely. Indeed, under the T-LIA model, we are able to construct a variety of solutions. The Hasimoto solution related to elastica is one of the fundamental solutions present for the standard fluid model; however, using the T-LIA model, we are able to demonstrate the existence of such a solution, thereby extending the Hasimoto solution to the superfluid case. In the zero-temperature limit, purely self-similar solutions are shown to exist for the T-LIA model. As the superfluid warms (so that the influence of the normal flow is no longer negligible), the analogue to the self-similar solution is a new class of solutions, which depend on the similarity variable as well as a time-dependent additive scaling. In other words, the self-similar structures gradually deform as the magnitude of the normal-fluid velocity increases, which makes complete physical sense. When dealing with small deviations from the central axis of alignment, we can describe such solutions analytically. There exists a family of helical vortex filaments in the presence of a normal fluid impinging on the vortex, in complete agreement with the previously studied results for the LIA model. Finally, a number of soliton solutions are shown to exist in different regimes of the T-LIA model.

The impulsive spin-up of a two-component superfluid and its container is solved analytically for the first time in arbitrary geometry, generalizing the extensively studied case of single-fluid spin-up. The superfluid is modelled by the Hall–Vinen–Bekarevich–Khalatnikov (HVBK) two-fluid equations, neglecting non-hydrodynamic processes like vortex tension and pinning, which are weak in certain applications (e.g. neutron stars) and confined to boundary layers in the inviscid HVBK component in other applications (e.g. helium II spin-up in smooth-walled containers). Both components of the flow are found to be columnar. The spin-up time depends on the geometry, mutual friction coefficients, $B$, ${B}^{\prime } $, the Ekman number $E$, and the superfluid density fraction ${\rho }_{n} $. For $B\sim O(1)$, the inviscid component undergoes Ekman pumping due to strong coupling to the viscous component, and the azimuthal velocities are ‘locked together’ during the spin-up. For $B\lesssim {E}^{1/ 2} $, there is no Ekman pumping in the inviscid component and the inviscid azimuthal velocity spins up via mutual friction on a combination of the mutual friction and Ekman time scales. The spin-up process is studied in spheres, cylinders (with co- and counter-rotating lids), and cones, and occurs faster in spheres and cones. Ekman pumping is (anti-) clockwise adjacent to the (lower-) upper-right boundary, and mirrored about the rotation axis. The solution obtained by Reisenegger (J. Low Temp. Phys., vol. 92, 1993, p. 77) between slowly accelerating parallel plates is recovered in the associated limit. The hydrodynamic torque on the container decays dual-exponentially with time in a cylinder but not in a sphere or cone, where it is a superposition of exponentials whose time scales vary with latitude. The torque is a good diagnostic of the flow; e.g. it is steepest initially in a sphere with strong mutual friction.

The hydrodynamic stability of plane Poiseuille flow of superfluid is studied using modal and non-modal analysis. Two modes of instability are predicted, in normal mode stability analysis of the normal fluid, one caused by viscosity similar to the classical mode and another due to mutual friction between superfluid and normal fluid. The mutual friction mode occurs at high wavenumbers, which are stable wavenumbers in classical plane Poiseuille flow. A high superfluid vortex line density alone is not enough to induce instability in normal fluid; a localization of vortex lines is shown to play a major role. The extent of vortex line concentration required to cause instability depends on the density itself. Non-modal instability analysis shows that oblique waves are stronger than streamwise waves, unlike the scenario in classical plane Poiseuille flow.

Quantum turbulence in thermal counterflow of superfluid ${\text{} }^{4} \mathrm{He} $ is studied at length scales comparable to the mean distance $\ell $ between quantized vortices. The Lagrangian dynamics of solid deuterium particles, of radius ${R}_{p} $ about one order of magnitude smaller than $\ell $, is analysed in a planar section of the experimental volume by using the particle tracking velocimetry technique. We show that the average amplitude of the acceleration of the particles seems to increase as the temperature decreases and applied heat flux increases and this can be explained by exploiting the two-fluid model of superfluid ${\text{} }^{4} \mathrm{He} $. We also report that, at the probed length scales, the normalized distribution of the acceleration of the particles appears to follow an unexpected classical-like behaviour.
