Studies were conducted from 1993–1995 at Samanko, Mali, on rearing and pheromone trapping of Busseola fusca Fuller (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and on the insecticidal effect of extracts of Jatropha curcas (Euphorbiaceae) on B. fusca and Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). A technique for mass rearingof B.fusca larvae on a chickpea and sorghum leaf-based meridic diet was developed, requiring about 10 g of diet per larva. An average of 7.3 successive generations were obtained per year. Pupal and larval mortalities were less than 15%. Oviposition was obtained on artificial substrates, with a fecundity of 300–500 eggs per female. Laboratory tests were conducted with diets in which extracts of nuts of J. curcas had been added. A 100% larvicidal effect was obtained with B. fusca and S. calamistis at 0.01% and 1% crude oil concentration respectively, and with 0.025% of the phorbol ester fraction on S. cahmistis. Trapping experiments using traps made of aluminum trays baited with synthetic pheromone showed that B. fusca male moths flights could be satisfactorily monitored. An improvement of traps and/or pheromone effectiveness is, however, necessary before their use as a control method.

Seven-day-old seedlings of 22 rice cultivars with dominant Glh1, Glh2, Glh3, Glh5, Glh6 and Glh7 and recessive glh4 genes were evaluated for resistance to the green leafhopper (GLH), Nephotettix virescens (Distant), in a no-choice seedling test under uniform infestation at four nymphs per seedling. “IR29” (gene not identified) was the resistant check, while “Taichung Native 1” (no resistance gene) was the susceptible check. Maximum reproducibility for resistance score was obtained 11 days after infestation. “Pankhari 203” (Glh1), “Kalimekri 77–5” (IRRI Accessions 6613 and 6622) (Glh1), “ASD7” (Glh2), “DNJ97” and “Arai” (Glh3), “ASD8” (Glh5), “PTB18” (Glh6), and “Laki 65” (IRRI Accession 6622) and “Lasane” (Glh7) showed consistently resistant reaction under the no-choice test. The lines could be used for allelic studies of GLH resistance and for gene pyramiding.

Leaf extractables/fractions obtained from the leaves of soybean PI 227687 showed greater antifeedant activity towards the third-instar larvae of the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni (Hub.). Extraction of leaves with ethyl acetate followed by 60% methanol, and counter-current partitioning of leaf extractables between ethyl acetate, water and hexane was not convenient for isolation of antifeedants. Methanol (60%) in water extracted most of the antifeedants from leaves, and this extract when partitioned between ethyl acetate and water (the latter repeatedly extracted with the former), concentrated the antifeedants from soybean leaves for further processing on thin layer chromatography or high performance liquid chromatography.

There were quantitative differences in ethyl acetate fraction of PI 227687 (6%) and Davis (3.2%), and in flavonoids resolved at Rf 0.10–0.20 in benzene: ethyl acetate: methanol (4:3:3). Most of the flavonoids with antifeedant activity resolved at Rf 0.10–0.80. The antifeedant activity of flavonoid bands from PI 227687 was greater than the corresponding bands of Davis.

Eight desi chickpea genotypes of mid-maturity group were screened by using an open-field screening technique. The genotypes ICC-3137, K-850 and ICC-1403 were found to be more susceptible than the others. More eggs were laid and more larvae were recorded on more susceptible genotypes. A low amount of acidity in the leaf extracts of genotypes was found to be associated with susceptibility to gram pod borer, Heliothis armigera (Hubner).

A new technique of mass-screening rice seedlings for resistance to the crab, Sesarma huzardi, developed by the West Africa Rice Development Association (WARDA) at Rokupr is described.

About 500 mangrove swamp local collections and a few exotic varieties have been screened for resistance to crab damage. Only 2% of the varieties have been identified as highly tolerant. Generally, the local collections were tolerant, while none of the foreign introductions have been tolerant.

The basis of resistance appears to be morphological, which physically affects feeding mechanism; thus, some varieties were more susceptible to crab damage than others.

Degree of the heritability (hb2 = 61%) estimate indicated that there is genetic variability for tolerance. In a team-oriented research, some of the varieties are being used in the WARDA breeding programme at Rokupr.

The origin of African rice, Oryza glaberrima Steud and Asian rice, O. saliva L., in West Africa is briefly reviewed. Major pests of rice in this region have been listed and the present status of crop protection with reference to rice is discussed. Major constraints to utilization of varietal resistance as a component in crop protection are mainly research-related. The need for manpower development, provision of adequate facilities, standardization of techniques as well as greater emphasis on studies on varietal resistance are highlighted.
