  • Most integrable systems owe their origin to problems in geometry and they are best understood in a geometrical context. This is especially true today when the heroic days of KdV-type integrability are over. Problems that can be solved using the inverse scattering transformation have reached the point of diminishing returns. Two major techniques have emerged for dealing with multi-dimensional integrable systems: twistor theory and the d-bar method, both of which form the subject of this book. It is intended to be an introduction, though by no means an elementary one, to current research on integrable systems in the framework of differential geometry and algebraic geometry. This book arose from a seminar, held at the Feza Gursey Institute, to introduce advanced graduate students to this area of research. The articles are all written by leading researchers and are designed to introduce the reader to contemporary research topics.

Continuous and Discrete Modules

  • Continuous and discrete modules are, essentially, generalizations of infective and projective modules respectively. Continuous modules provide an appropriate setting for decomposition theory of von Neumann algebras and have important applications to C*-algebras. Discrete modules constitute a dual concept and are related to number theory and algebraic geometry: they possess perfect decomposition properties. The advantage of both types of module is that the Krull-Schmidt theorem can be applied, in part, to them. The authors present here a complete account of the subject and at the same time give a unified picture of the theory. The treatment is essentially self-contained, with background facts being summarized in the first chapter. This book will be useful therefore either to individuals beginning research, or the more experienced worker in algebra and representation theory.

Quadratic Forms with Applications to Algebraic Geometry and Topology

  • This volume has grown out of lectures given by Professor Pfister over many years. The emphasis here is placed on results about quadratic forms that give rise to interconnections between number theory, algebra, algebraic geometry and topology. Topics discussed include Hilbert's 17th problem, the Tsen-Lang theory of quasi algebraically closed fields, the level of topological spaces and systems of quadratic forms over arbitrary fields. Whenever possible proofs are short and elegant, and the author's aim was to make this book as self-contained as possible. This is a gem of a book bringing together thirty years' worth of results that are certain to interest anyone whose research touches on quadratic forms.

  • Stiefel manifolds are an interesting family of spaces much studied by algebraic topologists. These notes, which originated in a course given at Harvard University, describe the state of knowledge of the subject, as well as the outstanding problems. The emphasis throughout is on applications (within the subject) rather than on theory. However, such theory as is required is summarized and references to the literature are given, thus making the book accessible to non-specialists and particularly graduate students. Many examples are given and further problems suggested.

  • This is an essentially self-contained monograph in an intriguing field of fundamental importance for Representation Theory, Harmonic Analysis, Mathematical Physics, and Combinatorics. It is a major source of general information about the double affine Hecke algebra, also called Cherednik's algebra, and its impressive applications. Chapter 1 is devoted to the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations attached to root systems and their relations to affine Hecke algebras, Kac-Moody algebras, and Fourier analysis. Chapter 2 contains a systematic exposition of the representation theory of the one-dimensional DAHA. It is the simplest case but far from trivial with deep connections in the theory of special functions.   • Dynamical systems is an area of intense research activity and one which finds application in many other areas of mathematics. This volume comprises a collection of survey articles that review several different areas of research.   • This collection of articles from the Independent University of Moscow is derived from the Globus seminars held there. They are given by world authorities, from Russia and elsewhere, in various areas of mathematics and are designed to introduce graduate students to some of the most dynamic areas of mathematical research. The seminars aim to be informal, wide-ranging and forward-looking, getting across the ideas and concepts rather than formal proofs, and this carries over to the articles here. Topics covered range from computational complexity, algebraic geometry, dynamics, through to number theory and quantum groups. The volume as a whole is a fascinating and exciting overview of contemporary mathematics.

  • The interaction between ergodic theory and discrete groups has a long history and much work was done in this area by Hedlund, Hopf and Myrberg in the 1930s. There has been a great resurgence of interest in the field, due in large measure to the pioneering work of Dennis Sullivan. Tools have been developed and applied with outstanding success to many deep problems. The ergodic theory of discrete groups has become a substantial field of mathematical research in its own right, and it is the aim of this book to provide a rigorous introduction from first principles to some of the major aspects of the theory. The particular focus of the book is on the remarkable measure supported on the limit set of a discrete group that was first developed by S. J. Patterson for Fuchsian groups, and later extended and refined by Sullivan.

  • In recent years the interplay between model theory and other branches of mathematics has led to many deep and intriguing results. In this, the first book on the topic, the theme is the interplay between model theory and the theory of modules. The book is intended to be a self-contained introduction to the subject and introduces the requisite model theory and module theory as it is needed.   • This second volume of the two-volume book contains selected papers from the international conference 'Groups St Andrews 2001 in Oxford' which was held at the University of Oxford in August 2001. Five main lecture courses were given at the conference, and articles based on their lectures form a substantial part of the Proceedings. This volume contains the contributions from Peter Palfy (Eotvos Lorand, Budapest) and Michael Vaughan-Lee (Oxford). The series of Proceedings of Groups St Andrews conferences have provided snapshots of the state of research in Group Theory throughout the past twenty years. Locally Presentable and Accessible Categories

  • The concepts of a locally presentable category and an accessible category have turned out to be useful in formulating connections between universal algebra, model theory, logic and computer science. The aim of this book is to provide an exposition of both the theory and the applications of these categories at a level accessible to graduate students. Firstly the properties of l-presentable objects, locally l-presentable categories, and l-accessible categories are discussed in detail, and the equivalence of accessible and sketchable categories is proved. The authors go on to study categories of algebras and prove that Freyd's essentially algebraic categories are precisely the locally presentable categories. In the final chapters they treat some topics in model theory and some set theoretical aspects. For researchers in category theory, algebra, computer science, and model theory, this book will be a necessary purchase.

Invariant Potential Theory in the Unit Ball of Cn

  • This monograph provides an introduction and a survey of recent results in potential theory with respect to the Laplace–Beltrami operator D in several complex variables, with special emphasis on the unit ball in Cn. Topics covered include Poisson–Szegö integrals on the ball, the Green's function for D and the Riesz decomposition theorem for invariant subharmonic functions. The extension to the ball of the classical Fatou theorem on non-tangible limits of Poisson integrals, and Littlewood's theorem on the existence of radial limits of subharmonic functions are covered in detail. The monograph also contains recent results on admissible and tangential boundary limits of Green potentials, and Lp inequalities for the invariant gradient of Green potentials. Applications of some of the results to Hp spaces, and weighted Bergman and Dirichlet spaces of invariant harmonic functions are included. The notes are self-contained, and should be accessible to anyone with some basic knowledge of several complex variables.

Characters and Blocks of Finite Groups

  • This is a clear, accessible and up-to-date exposition of modular representation theory of finite groups from a character-theoretic viewpoint. After a short review of the necessary background material, the early chapters introduce Brauer characters and blocks and develop their basic properties. The next three chapters study and prove Brauer's first, second and third main theorems in turn. These results are then applied to prove a major application of finite groups, the Glauberman Z*-theorem. Later chapters examine Brauer characters in more detail. The relationship between blocks and normal subgroups is also explored and the modular characters and blocks in p-solvable groups are discussed. Finally, the character theory of groups with a Sylow p-subgroup of order p is studied. Each chapter concludes with a set of problems. The book is aimed at graduate students, with some previous knowledge of ordinary character theory, and researchers studying the representation theory of finite groups.
