A continuum hydrodynamic model has been used to characterize flowing active nematics. The behavior of such a system subjected to a weak steady shear is analyzed. We explore the director structures and flow behaviors of the system in flow-aligning and flow tumbling regimes. Combining asymptotic analysis and numerical simulations, we extend previous studies to give a complete characterization of the steady states for both contractile and extensile particles in flow-aligning and flow-tumbling regimes. Another key prediction of this work is the role of the system size on the steady states of an active nematic system: if the system size is small, the velocity and the director angle files for both flow-tumbling contractile and extensile systems are similar to those of passive nematics; if the system is big, the velocity and the director angle files for flow-aligning contractile systems and tumbling extensile systems are akin to sheared passive cholesterics while they are oscillatory for flow-aligning extensile and tumbling contractile systems.

In present paper, the locomotion of an oblate jellyfish is numerically investigated by using a momentum exchange-based immersed boundary-Lattice Boltzmann method based on a dynamic model describing the oblate jellyfish. The present investigation is agreed fairly well with the previous experimental works. The Reynolds number and the mass density of the jellyfish are found to have significant effects on the locomotion of the oblate jellyfish. Increasing Reynolds number, the motion frequency of the jellyfish becomes slow due to the reduced work done for the pulsations, and decreases and increases before and after the mass density ratio of the jellyfish to the carried fluid is 0.1. The total work increases rapidly at small mass density ratios and slowly increases to a constant value at large mass density ratio. Moreover, as mass density ratio increases, the maximum forward velocity significantly reduces in the contraction stage, while the minimum forward velocity increases in the relaxation stage.

Three physical mechanisms which may affect dispersion of particle’s motion in wall-bounded turbulent flows, including the effects of turbulence, wall roughness in particle-wall collisions, and inter-particle collisions, are numerically investigated in this study. Parametric studies with different wall roughness extents and with different mass loading ratios of particles are performed in fully developed channel flows with the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. A low-Reynolds-number k – ε turbulence model is applied for the solution of the carrier-flow field, while the deterministic Lagrangian method together with binary-collision hard-sphere model is applied for the solution of particle motion. It is shown that the mechanism of inter-particle collisions should be taken into account in the modeling except for the flows laden with sufficiently low mass loading ratios of particles. Influences of wall roughness on particle dispersion due to particle-wall collisions are found to be considerable in the bounded particle–laden flow. Since the investigated particles are associated with large Stokes numbers, i.e., larger than O (1), in the test problem, the effects of turbulence on particle dispersion are much less considerable, as expected, in comparison with another two physical mechanisms investigated in the study.

In this work, vortex convection is simulated using a dynamic mesh adaptation procedure. In each adaptation period, the mesh is refined in the regions where the phenomena evolve and is coarsened in the regions where the phenomena deviate since the last adaptation. A simple indicator of mesh adaptation that accounts for the solution progression is defined. The generation of dynamic adaptive meshes is based on multilevel refinement/coarsening. The efficiency and accuracy of the present procedure are validated by simulating vortex convection in a uniform flow. Two unsteady compressible turbulent flows involving blade-vortex interactions are investigated to demonstrate further the applicability of the procedure. Computed results agree well with the published experimental data or numerical results.

We apply the multiscale basis functions for the singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problem on adaptively graded meshes, which can provide a good balance between the numerical accuracy and computational cost. The multiscale space is built through standard finite element basis functions enriched with multiscale basis functions. The multiscale basis functions have abilities to capture originally perturbed information in the local problem, as a result our method is capable of reducing the boundary layer errors remarkably on graded meshes, where the layer-adapted meshes are generated by a given parameter. Through numerical experiments we demonstrate that the multiscale method can acquire second order convergence in the L2 norm and first order convergence in the energy norm on graded meshes, which is independent of ɛ. In contrast with the conventional methods, our method is much more accurate and effective.

In this paper, we study an efficient scheme for nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations discretized by mixed finite element methods. We mainly concern the case when pressure coefficients and source terms are nonlinear. To linearize the nonlinear mixed equations, we use the two-grid algorithm. We first solve the nonlinear equations on the coarse grid, then, on the fine mesh, we solve a linearized problem using Newton iteration once. It is shown that the algorithm can achieve asymptotically optimal approximation as long as the mesh sizes satisfy H = O(h1/2). As a result, solving such a large class of nonlinear equations will not be much more difficult than getting solutions of one linearized system.

In this paper the problem − div(a(x,y)∇u) = f with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a square is solved iteratively with high accuracy for u and ∇u using a new scheme called “hermitian box-scheme”. The design of the scheme is based on a “hermitian box”, combining the approximation of the gradient by the fourth order hermitian derivative, with a conservative discrete formulation on boxes of length 2h. The iterative technique is based on the repeated solution by a fast direct method of a discrete Poisson equation on a uniform rectangular mesh. The problem is suitably scaled before iteration. The numerical results obtained show the efficiency of the numerical scheme. This work is the extension to strongly elliptic problems of the hermitian box-scheme presented by Abbas and Croisille (J. Sci. Comput., 49 (2011), pp. 239-267).

The generating function methods have been applied successfully to generalized Hamiltonian systems with constant or invertible Poisson-structure matrices. In this paper, we extend these results and present the generating function methods preserving the Poisson structures for generalized Hamiltonian systems with general variable Poisson-structure matrices. In particular, some obtained Poisson schemes are applied efficiently to some dynamical systems which can be written into generalized Hamiltonian systems (such as generalized Lotka-Volterra systems, Robbins equations and so on).

In this paper, the generalized thermoelasticity problem for an infinite fiber-reinforced transversely-isotropic thick plate subjected to initial stress is solved. The lower surface of the plate rests on a rigid foundation and temperature while the upper surface is thermally insulated with prescribed surface loading. The normal mode analysis is used to obtain the analytical expressions for the displacements, stresses and temperature distributions. The problem has been solved analytically using the generalized thermoelasticity theory of dual-phase-lags. Effect of phase-lags, reinforcement and initial stress on the field quantities is shown graphically. The results due to the coupled thermoelasticity theory, Lord and Shulman’s theory, and Green and Naghdi’s theory have been derived as limiting cases. The graphs illustrated that the initial stress, the reinforcement and phase-lags have great effects on the distributions of the field quantities.

Fluid-structure-interaction problems are ubiquitous, complicated, and not yet well understood. In this paper we investigate the interaction of a leading rigid circular cylinder and a trailing compliant filament and analyze the dynamic responses of the filament in the wake of the cylinder. It is revealed that there exist two flapping states of the filament depending on the cylinder-filament separation distance and the relevant critical distance distinguishing the two states is associated with the Reynolds number and the filament length. It is also found that the drag coefficient of the cylinder is reduced but that of the filament may be increased or decreased depending on its length. Compared with a single filament in a uniform flow, the filament of the same mechanical properties flapping in the wake of the cylinder has a lower frequency and a greater amplitude.

In this paper we prove first the existence and uniqueness results for the weak solution, to the stationary equations for Bingham fluid in a three dimensional bounded domain with Fourier and Tresca boundary condition; then we study the asymptotic analysis when one dimension of the fluid domain tend to zero. The strong convergence of the velocity is proved, a specific Reynolds limit equation and the limit of Tresca free boundary conditions are obtained.

In this paper we find the solution of linear as well as nonlinear fractional partial differential equations using discrete Adomian decomposition method. Here we develop the discrete Adomian decomposition method to find the solution of fractional discrete diffusion equation, nonlinear fractional discrete Schrodinger equation, fractional discrete Ablowitz-Ladik equation and nonlinear fractional discrete Burger’s equation. The obtained solution is verified by comparison with exact solution when α = 1.

This paper investigates the laminar boundary layer flow of nanofluid induced by a radially stretching sheet. Nanofluid model exhibiting Brownian motion and thermophoresis is used. Series solutions for a reduced system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations are obtained by homotopy analysis method (HAM). Comparative study between the HAM solutions and previously published numerical results shows an excellent agreement. Velocity, temperature and mass fraction are displayed for various values of parameters. The local skin friction coefficient, the local Nusselt number and the local Sherwood number are computed. It is observed that the presence of nanoparticles enhances the thermal conductivity of base fluid. It is found that the convective heat transfer coefficient (Nusselt number) is decreased with an increase in concentration of nanoparticles whereas Sherwood number increases when concentration of nanoparticles in the base fluid is increased.

In this paper, we propose two new explicit multi-symplectic splitting methods for the nonlinear Dirac (NLD) equation. Based on its multi-symplectic formulation, the NLD equation is split into one linear multi-symplectic system and one nonlinear infinite Hamiltonian system. Then multi-symplectic Fourier pseudospectral method and multi-symplectic Preissmann scheme are employed to discretize the linear subproblem, respectively. And the nonlinear subsystem is solved by a symplectic scheme. Finally, a composition method is applied to obtain the final schemes for the NLD equation. We find that the two proposed schemes preserve the total symplecticity and can be solved explicitly. Numerical experiments are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

A semi-discrete scheme about time for the non-stationary Navier-Stokes equations is presented firstly, then a new fully discrete finite volume element (FVE) formulation based on macroelement is directly established from the semi-discrete scheme about time. And the error estimates for the fully discrete FVE solutions are derived by means of the technique of the standard finite element method. It is shown by numerical experiments that the numerical results are consistent with theoretical conclusions. Moreover, it is shown that the FVE method is feasible and efficient for finding the numerical solutions of the non-stationary Navier-Stokes equations and it is one of the most effective numerical methods among the FVE formulation, the finite element formulation, and the finite difference scheme.

Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems in microchannels play prominent roles in many engineering applications. The present study is an effort towards the simulation of flow in microchannel considering FSI. Top boundary of the microchannel is assumed to be rigid and the bottom boundary, which is modeled as a Bernoulli-Euler beam, is simulated by size-dependent beam elements for finite element method (FEM) based on a modified couple stress theory. The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) using D2Q13 LB model is coupled to the FEM in order to solve fluid part of FSI problem. In the present study, the governing equations are non-dimensionalized and the set of dimensionless groups is exhibited to show their effects on micro-beam displacement. The numerical results show that the displacements of the micro-beam predicted by the size-dependent beam element are smaller than those by the classical beam element.

This paper is devoted to a new high-accuracy finite difference scheme for solving reaction-convection-diffusion problems with a small diffusivity ε. With a novel treatment for the reaction term, we first derive a difference scheme of accuracy O(εh2+εh2+h3) for the 1-D case. Using the alternating direction technique, we then extend the scheme to the 2-D case on a nine-point stencil. We apply the high-accuracy finite difference scheme to solve the 2-D steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the stream function-vorticity formulation. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed difference scheme. Comparisons made with some high-order compact difference schemes show that the newly proposed scheme can achieve good accuracy with a better stability.

We consider an inverse problem of determining unknown coefficients for a one-dimensional analogue of radiative transport equation. We show that some combination of the unknown coefficients can be uniquely determined by giving pulse-like inputs at the boundary and observing the corresponding outputs. Our result can be applied for determination of absorption and scattering properties of an optically turbid medium if the radiative transport equation is appropriate for describing the propagation of light in the medium.

An investigation is carried out on mixed convection boundary layer flow of an incompressible and electrically conducting viscoelastic fluid over a linearly stretching surface in which the heat transfer includes the effects of viscous dissipation, elastic deformation, thermal radiation, and non-uniform heat source/sink for two general types of non-isothermal boundary conditions. The governing partial differential equations for the fluid flow and temperature are reduced to a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations which are solved analytically using the homotopy analysis method (HAM). Graphical and numerical demonstrations of the convergence of the HAM solutions are provided, and the effects of various parameters on the skin friction coefficient and wall heat transfer are tabulated. In addition it is demonstrated that previously reported solutions of the thermal energy equation given in [1] do not converge at the boundary, and therefore, the boundary derivatives reported are not correct.

Aiming at a complex multi-block structured grid, an efficient dynamic mesh generation method is presented in this paper, which is based on radial basis functions (RBFs) and transfinite interpolation (TFI). When the object is moving, the multi-block structured grid would be changed. The fast mesh deformation is critical for numerical simulation. In this work, the dynamic mesh deformation is completed in two steps. At first, we select all block vertexes with known deformation as center points, and apply RBFs interpolation to get the grid deformation on block edges. Then, an arc-length-based TFI is employed to efficiently calculate the grid deformation on block faces and inside each block. The present approach can be well applied to both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) problems. Numerical results show that the dynamic meshes for all test cases can be generated in an accurate and efficient manner.
