Thymol is the most common molecule in thyme and has been proposed as an oral alternative to antibiotics in the feed of pigs and broilers. The knowledge of the in vivo physiological effects of thymol on tissues is limited, particularly its impact on the gastric mucosa, where it is primarily absorbed when it is orally supplied. In this study, thymol (TH, 50 mg/ kg BW) or a placebo (CO) was introduced directly into the stomach of 8 weaned pigs that were slaughtered 12 h later and sampled for gastric oxyntic and pyloric mucosa. The analysis of whole transcript expression was performed using Affymetrix© Porcine Gene 1.1 ST array strips. Affymetrix Transcripts IDs were associated with 13 406 human gene names based on Sus scrofa Ensemble. Gene Set Enrichment Analysis was performed, comparing TH and CO pigs. For each gene set, the normalized enrichment score (NES) was defined as significant when the false discovery rate % was <25 and the P-value of NES was <0.05. In response to TH, 72 and 19 gene sets were significantly enriched in the oxyntic and pyloric mucosa, respectively. Several gene sets involved in mitosis and its regulation ranked near the top, primarily in the oxyntic mucosa; the gene set DIGESTION ranked first and ninth in the pyloric and oxyntic mucosa, respectively. Within this group, somatostatin (SST), SST receptors, peptide transporter 1 (SLC15A1) and calpain 9 (gastrointestinal tract-specific calpain) were the most strongly upregulated genes. Thymol reduced the enrichment of 120 and 59 gene sets in the oxyntic and pyloric mucosa, respectively. Several gene sets related to ion transport and channeling and aqueous pores across membranes, including short transient receptor potential (TRP) channel 4, potassium voltage-gated channel members 1 and 2, and ryanodine receptors 2 and 3, were less enriched. The downregulation of these genes sensitive to thymol in vitro could depend on the thymol dose and contact with the gastric tissues that causes an adaptive response with their reduced activation. Conversely, the activation of the TRPA1 gene (ranked 1072 and 128 among all the genes in the oxyntic and pyloric mucosa, respectively) indicates the involvement of another TRP-regulating cellular calcium storage. In conclusion, the stimulation of gastric proliferative activity and the control of digestive activity by thymol can influence positively gastric maturation and function in the weaned pigs. These properties should be considered in addition to thymol’s antimicrobial properties when supplementation of this molecule in feed is evaluated.

Combining different swine populations in genomic prediction can be an important tool, leading to an increased accuracy of genomic prediction using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chip data compared with within-population genomic. However, the expected higher accuracy of multi-population genomic prediction has not been realized. This may be due to an inconsistent linkage disequilibrium (LD) between SNPs and quantitative trait loci (QTL) across populations, and the weak genetic relationships across populations. In this study, we determined the impact of different genomic relationship matrices, SNP density and pre-selected variants on prediction accuracy using a combined Yorkshire pig population. Our objective was to provide useful strategies for improving the accuracy of genomic prediction within a combined population. Results showed that the accuracy of genomic best linear unbiased prediction (GBLUP) using imputed whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data in the combined population was always higher than that within populations. Furthermore, the use of imputed WGS data always resulted in a higher accuracy of GBLUP than the use of 80K chip data for the combined population. Additionally, the accuracy of GBLUP with a non-linear genomic relationship matrix was markedly increased (0.87% to 15.17% for 80K chip data, and 0.43% to 4.01% for imputed WGS data) compared with that obtained with a linear genomic relationship matrix, except for the prediction of XD population in the combined population using imputed WGS data. More importantly, the application of pre-selected variants based on fixation index (Fst) scores improved the accuracy of multi-population genomic prediction, especially for 80K chip data. For BLUP|GA (BLUP approach given the genetic architecture), the use of a linear method with an appropriate weight to build a weight-relatedness matrix led to a higher prediction accuracy compared with the use of only pre-selected SNPs for genomic evaluations, especially for the total number of piglets born. However, for the non-linear method, BLUP|GA showed only a small increase or even a decrease in prediction accuracy compared with the use of only pre-selected SNPs. Overall, the best genomic evaluation strategy for reproduction-related traits for a combined population was found to be GBLUP performed with a non-linear genomic relationship matrix using variants pre-selected from the 80K chip data based on Fst scores.

Food waste from fish and fruit shops was used as an alternative to the grain in grower-finisher pig diets. Two diets were formulated on an iso-nutrient basis (14 MJ digestible energy per kg, 160 g crude protein per kg on a dry-matter basis) to contain 0 g of food waste per kg in the control diet and 50 g of fish-shop waste per kg and 120 g of fruit-shop waste per kg in the experimental diet. In the study, 28 pigs per diet (seven pigs per pen) were fed ad libitum from 20 kg to 100 kg, then, they were slaughtered and the carcass characteristics determined. The inclusion of food waste in the diet had no significant effect (P>0.05) on average daily feed intake (2.12 v. 2.20 kg/day), average daily gain (0.74 v. 0.78 kg/day), or gain/feed (0.35 v. 0.35 kg per kg). In the case of the experimental diet, backfat thickness was significantly lower (18.0 v. 21.3 mm, P < 0.01). The results of the taste test indicated that the meat from food waste-fed pigs had acceptable organoleptic quality although a very light aroma to fish was observed in the bacon (P < 0.01).

It was concluded that food waste from the fish and fruit shops could be included in grower-finisher pig diets without any detrimental effect on growth performance and only minor effects on carcass characteristics and meat quality.

The skeleton is the main site of P and Ca deposition; therefore, accurate estimation of Ca and P requirements is necessary to maintaining health and optimum performance of broiler chickens. A response surface methodology (RSM) using a central composite design (CCD) was used for evaluating and optimizing of Ca and non-phytate P (NPP) requirements of broiler chickens for optimal performance, ileal nutrient digestibility and bone mineralization from 1 to 21 days of age. A total of 750 one-day-old male broiler chickens (Ross 308) were randomly distributed into 50 cages including 9 treatments, each replicated 5 times (except central treatment with 10 replicates) and 15 birds in each cage by CCD. The dietary Ca levels of 4.3, 5.6, 8.6, 11.7 and 13.0 g/kg and NPP of 2.5, 2.9, 4.0, 5.0 and 5.4 g/kg were used for nine treatments of CCD. The results indicated that the linear and quadratic effects of NPP, quadratic effects of Ca and Ca × NPP were significant for average weight gain (AWG, P < 0.05), average feed intake (AFI, P < 0.05), feed conversion ratio (FCR, P < 0.05) and Ca and P apparent ileal digestibility (AID, P < 0.05); however, the linear effect of Ca was significant only for FCR (P < 0.05). On the other hand, tibia and toe ash were affected by NPP (linear and quadratic, P < 0.01) and Ca (quadratic, P < 0.01). The second-order polynomial regression model was significant for AWG (R2 = 0.93, P < 0.001), AFI (R2 = 0.88, P < 0.001), FCR (R2 = 0.78, P < 0.001), AID of Ca (R2 = 0.78, P < 0.001) and P (R2 = 0.88, P < 0.001), tibia ash (R2 = 0.86, P < 0.001) and toe ash (R2 = 0.85, P < 0.001). The multi-objective optimization indicated that broiler chickens from 1 to 21 days of age need 7.03 and 4.47 g/kg of Ca and NPP, respectively, to achieve optimal AWG, FCR, tibia and toe ash. However, the dietary Ca and NPP levels can be reduced to 6.57 and 3.95 g/kg with a slight negative impact on performance and bone mineralization, respectively. In conclusion, the findings indicate that using multi-objective optimization model such as RSM provides more information regarding optimum Ca and NPP requirements of broiler chickens, considering the complex interaction between these two minerals. While the NPP levels are in line with current recommended requirements, Ca levels are considerably lower and suggest that current recommended Ca requirements may be in excess of the needs of the broiler.

Trace minerals have important roles in immune function and oxidative metabolism; however, little is known about the relationships between supplementation level and source with outcomes in dairy cattle. Multiparous Holstein cows (n=48) beginning at 60 to 140 days in milk were utilized to determine the effects of trace mineral amount and source on aspects of oxidative metabolism and responses to intramammary lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge. Cows were fed a basal diet meeting National Research Council (NRC) requirements except for no added zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) or manganese (Mn). After a 4-week preliminary period, cows were assigned to one of four topdress treatments in a randomized complete block design with a 2×2 factorial arrangement of treatments: (1) NRC inorganic (NRC levels using inorganic (sulfate-based) trace mineral supplements only); (2) NRC organic (NRC levels using organic trace mineral supplements (metals chelated to 2-hydroxy-4-(methythio)-butanoic acid); (3) commercial inorganic (approximately 2×NRC levels using inorganic trace mineral supplements only; and (4) commercial organic (commercial levels using organic trace mineral supplements only). Cows were fed the respective mineral treatments for 6 weeks. Treatment effects were level, source and their interaction. Activities of super oxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in erythrocyte lysate and concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) in plasma were measured as indices of oxidative metabolism. Effects of treatment on those indices were not significant when evaluated across the entire experimental period. Plasma immunoglobulin G level was higher in cows supplemented with organic trace minerals over the entire treatment period; responses assessed as differences of before and after Escherichia coli J5 bacterin vaccination at the end of week 2 of treatment period were not significant. Cows were administered an intramammary LPS challenge during week 5; during week 6 cows fed commercial levels of Zn, Cu and Mn tended to have higher plasma TAC and cows fed organic sources had decreased plasma TBARS. After the LPS challenge, the extent and pattern of response of plasma cortisol concentrations and clinical indices (rectal temperature and heart rate) were not affected by trace mineral level and source. Productive performance including dry matter intake and milk yield and composition were not affected by treatment. Overall, results suggest that the varying level and source of dietary trace minerals do not have significant short-term effects on oxidative metabolism indices and clinical responses to intramammary LPS challenge in midlactation cows.

Excessive accumulation of lipids in the adipose tissue is one of the main problems faced by the broiler industry nowadays. In chicken, lipogenesis occurs essentially in the liver, in which much of the triglycerides that accumulate in avian adipose tissue are synthesized. In order to better understand the gene expression and its regulation in chicken liver, the gene expression profiles of liver at developmental stages of chicken (1 week, 4 weeks and 7 weeks of age) were investigated and differentially expressed genes between lean and fat chicken lines divergently selected for abdominal fat content for eight generations were screened. Our data indicated that 4 weeks of age was a very important stage on chicken liver lipogenesis compared to 1 week and 7 weeks of age, and the glycometabolism in chicken liver could be related to lipid metabolism and the difference of glycometabolism could be another potential reason for the fat and lean phenotype occurrence besides the difference of lipogenesis in chicken liver. Our result have established groundwork for further study of the basic genetic control of chicken obesity and will benefit chicken research communities as well as researches that use chicken as a model organism for developmental biology and human therapeutics.

Bivariate individual animal model estimates of genetic and environmental correlations between reproduction traits (number born alive and average piglet weight) and performance test traits (ultrasonic backfat depth, average daily food intake, average daily gain and food conversion ratio) of Landrace pigs were calculated. The estimates were produced using a derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood algorithm to calculate likelihoods for different combinations of covariance parameters. A quadratic approximation to the likelihood surface was used to estimate the maximum likelihood values with respect to the covariance parameters. For all combinations of performance test traits with reproduction traits the resulting genetic and residual correlation estimates were low, with a maximum absolute value of 0·233 for the genetic correlation between food conversion ratio and number born alive. Standard errors of genetic correlation estimates were between 0·11 and 0·15. There is expected to have been little effect upon reproduction traits from the rigorous selection carried out upon performance test traits over the years. When incorporating reproduction data into best linear unbiased prediction analysis procedures it should be possible to analyse performance test and reproduction traits from this population separately, thereby making savings on computer resources and time required for the analysis of all traits.

Glutathione (GSH) is considered to play an important role in maintaining the integrity of the small intestine. In piglets, altered mucosal GSH levels might therefore be involved in weaning-induced changes of the small intestinal morphology and barrier function. To test this hypothesis, we aimed to challenge the mucosal GSH redox status during the first 28 days after weaning, by feeding diets containing 5% fresh linseed oil (CON), or 2.5% (OF1) or 5% (OF2) peroxidized linseed oil (peroxide value 225 mEq O2/kg oil) and exploring the effects on gut integrity. Piglets were pair-fed and had a total daily feed allowance of 32 g/kg BW. A fourth treatment included animals that were fed the control diet ad libitum (ACON). Animals were sampled at days 5 and 28 post-weaning. The malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and GSH redox status (GSH/GSSG Eh) were determined in blood, liver and small intestinal mucosa. Histomorphology of the duodenal and jejunal mucosa was determined, and Ussing chambers were used to assess fluorescein isothiocyanate dextran (FD4) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) fluxes across the mucosa. Results show that peroxidized linseed oil imposed an oxidative challenge at day 28, but not at day 5 post-weaning. At day 28, increasing levels of dietary peroxides to pair-fed pigs linearly increased MDA levels in duodenal and jejunal mucosa. Moreover, FD4 fluxes were significantly increased in OF1 (+75%) and OF2 (+64%) in the duodenum, and HRP fluxes tended (P=0.099) to show similar differences, as compared to CON. This co-occurred with a significant 11 mV increase of the hepatic GSH/GSSG Eh, potentiated by a significantly increased GSH peroxidase activity for treatments OF1 (+47%) and OF2 (+63%) in liver as compared to CON. Furthermore; duodenal HRP flux significantly correlated with the hepatic glutathione disulphide (GSSG) level (r=0.650), as also observed in the jejunum for hepatic GSSG (r=0.627) and GSH/GSSG Eh (r=0.547). The jejunal permeability was not affected, but FD4 and HRP fluxes significantly correlated with the local GSH (r=0.619; r=0.733) and GSSG (r=0.635; r=0586) levels. Small intestinal histomorphology was not affected by dietary lipid peroxides, nor were there any correlations found with the GSH redox system. To conclude, under oxidative stress conditions, jejunal barrier function is related to the local and hepatic GSH redox system. It is suggested that the hepatic GSH system participates in the elimination of luminal peroxides, and thereby impacts on duodenal barrier function.

Over 3 years, in Greyface ewes stocked at 10 or 15 per ha and mated in October (early) or November (late), lamb production at birth was related to the pattern of live-weight change of the individual ewe about mating. Based on weighings at 1·5- to 3-week intervals, ewes were grouped according to whether they were gaining (114 ewes), losing (221) or apparently maintaining weight (339) at the time of mating. Ewes losing weight produced significantly fewer lambs (1·58) than did ewes maintaining weight (1·78) while both produced significantly fewer lambs than did ewes gaining weight (1·96). Differences in lamb production between years (year 1 = 1·84, year 2 = 1·71, year 3 = 1·70) and times of mating (early = 1·82, late = 1·67) can be explained in terms of live weight at mating and the different proportions of ewes gaining, maintaining and losing weight. On the basis of earlier studies, it is suggested that the effect of direction of live-weight change operated on failure to conceive or on total loss of multiple-shed ova and was more important pre-mating than post mating.

Tenderness is considered as the most important quality determinant of meat. Calcium chloride application has been shown to improve tenderness by regulating endogenous proteinases. This study was designed to determine the effect of 300 mM calcium chloride injection on myofibrillar structures, caspase activities and shear force in longissimus muscles of bulls during postmortem storage of 7 days. Myofibrillar fragmentation index was determined as an index of proteolysis occurring in muscle fibers and associated proteins. Maximum tenderness was observed at days 4 and 7 in both treated and control samples. The injection of calcium chloride significantly increased myofibrillar proteolysis and improved tenderness at postmortem days 4 and 7. The treatment reduced caspase-9 activity at 4 h and day 4, whereas those of caspase-8 and -3 activities at days 1 and 4 with respect to control. The improved tenderness and increased myofibril fragmentation with decreased caspase activities suggested that the proteolytic systems activated with calcium chloride injection possibly behave independent of the caspase system.

Outflow rate of small particles from the rumen of dry and lactating Chios ewes and Damascus goats were measured in two separate trials using Cr-treated soya-bean meal (SBM). In another trial, the in situ degradation of fish meal (FM) and SBM in the rumen of Chios ewes and Damascus goats were measured. Outflow rate (per h) of small particles from the rumen of the two species was similar but higher outflow rates were observed in lactating than in dry animals (dry ewes 0·054, lactating ewes 0·086, dry goats 0·057, lactating goats 0·081). With the exception of dry-matter degradability of SBM at 6-h incubation periods there were no significant differences between ewes and goats in crude protein or dry-matter degradability of both supplements at all incubation intervals. Degradation measurements at various incubation periods and effective degradation values were different between supplements.

Twenty-eight Suffolk-cross male castrated lambs aged 7 to 8 months, initial live weight 36 (s.e. 149) kg were given four diets which contained unground pelleted molassed sugar-beet pulp and rolled barley (940 g/kg, fresh weight basis) in the following proportions either A, 0·8 to 0·2 or B, 0·5 to 0·5, with 60 g soya-bean meal per kg. Diets A and B were offered with or without a yeast culture product Yea-Sacc. Diets zvere offered twice daily to appetite with 100 g hay per head. Yeast culture had no effect on any measurement made (P > 0·05). Lambs given diet B consumed more dry matter (DM), grew faster and had superior food conversion efficiencies (all P < 0·01). Rumen fluid taken 3 h after feeding contained higher concentrations of ammonia (F < 0·01), total volatile fatty acids (F < 0·001) and acetic acid (F < 0·001) in samples from lambs given diet A. Rumen fluid samples collected before the 10·00 h meal, produced more gas from diet A than diet B after 6 and 24 h in vitro incubation (F < 0·001) suggesting the presence of more undigested food. When ground diets were incubated, more gas was produced from diet A after 6h (F < 0·05) but not after 24 h fP > 0·05). It is suggested that diet B supported faster growth of the lambs as a result of faster rate of digestion, higher DM intake and superior food conversion.

Individual and group-penning, and entire male and female sexes were investigated in a factorial design. The size of group was five pigs. The diets were given to a scale based on live weight.

Individual penning gave significantly faster gains than group penning (679 v. 653 g/day, P < 0·01) but the improvement in food conversion ratio was not significant. Loin sample joints from individually-penned pigs had less lean and significantly more fat than did those from group-penned pigs. The faster growth rate and greater fatness of the individually-penned pigs indicated that more energy was retained by these animals and it was concluded that the greater retention of energy derived primarily from an apparently reduced metabolic heat production. The associated increase in initial growth rate was accentuated by the nature of the feeding scale.

There was some indication that boars did not grow as well as gilts in individual pens. Boars grew faster than gilts and converted food more efficiently to live-weight gain especially above 50 kg. They had lower killing-out yields and less fat than gilts.

Many investigations point out the important role of leptin during the preimplantation development. Transcripts for the leptin gene (LEP) and its receptor (LEPR) have been identified in several tissues related to reproduction (e.g. ovaries, testis and oviduct) in both human and mouse. This work shows for the first time the expression and distribution patterns of LEP and LEPR in bovine oocytes and in vitro-produced embryos. Gene expression was analysed by reverse transcription PCR and real-time PCR, and the proteins were localised by immunostaining. This study included immature and mature oocytes, zygotes, two-, four-, eight- to 16-cell embryos, morulae and blastocysts and the LEP transcript was identified throughout all stages of bovine preimplantation development. However, mRNA for the LEPR gene was detected at all stages, excluding four-cell embryos. Expression of both LEP and LEPR genes was reduced at the eight- to 16-cell stage. This in addition to the absence of LEPR mRNA in four-blastomere embryos may suggest that maternally derived transcripts degenerate towards the eight- to 16-cell stage coinciding with embryonic genome activation at eight- to 16-cell stage and subsequent appearance of embryonic mRNA. Immunofluorescent staining demonstrated that LEP and LEPR proteins form a spherical rim beneath the oolemma. After maturation, however, the proteins became evenly distributed within the cytoplasm. In two- to eight-cell embryos, fluorescence was observed in the apical surface of the blastomeres, and from 10- to 16-cell stage in the apical region of outer blastomeres. This pattern persisted to the blastocyst stage, leading to LEP and LEPR distribution within trophoblast cells, but not in the inner cell mass. These results support previous findings on polar distribution of proteins within mammalian oocytes and embryos, as well as suggests leptin’s potential role during early mammalian development and implantation.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of pistachio by-product silage (PBPS) as a partial replacement for corn silage (CS) on chewing activity, nutrients digestibility and ruminal fermentation parameters in Holstein male calves over a 6-month assay. For this purpose, 24 Holstein male calves (4 to 5 months of age and 155.6±13.5 kg BW) were randomly assigned to one of the four dietary treatments (n=6). In these treatments, CS was substituted with different levels of PBPS (0%, 6%, 12% and 18% of dry matter (DM)). Nutrient digestibility was measured at the end of the experimental period (days 168 to 170). Ruminal fermentation parameters were determined on days 90 and 180 and chewing activity was determined on days 15 of the 3rd and 6th month of the experiment. Results showed that calves fed rations containing 6% PBPS spent more time ruminating (P<0.05) than the control group on the 3rd and 6th months. Feeding PBPS was found to have no effects on DM, organic matter (OM), ether extract or ash digestibility, but apparent digestibility of CP, NDFom and ADFom linearly decreased (P<0.01) with increasing substitutions. On days 90 and 180, ruminal concentrations of volatile fatty acids and NH3–N linearly decreased (P<0.01) with increasing levels of PBPS in the diets; however, ruminal pH and molar proportions of acetate, propionate and butyrate were similar across the treatments. It was concluded that partial substitution of CS with PBPS (6% or 12%) would have no adverse effects on nutrient digestibility, total chewing activity and ruminal fermentation parameters.

This meta-analysis aimed to estimate the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) and the basal ileal endogenous amino acid losses (IAAend) in barley for growing pigs. In total, 38 different barley treatments published in 26 peer-reviewed papers were used for the meta-analysis containing information on dietary composition including amino acid (AA) contents of the assay diets, and (or) barley samples, as well as apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of AA in barley. The SID of AA was determined by either correcting AID of AA for their IAAend or by regression analysis between the apparent ileal digestible and total dietary AA contents. The SID values obtained by correcting the AID values for their IAAend amounted to 70%, 77%, 74% and 63% for Lys, Met, Thr and Trp, whereas those based on regression analysis method were 82%, 82%, 69% and 55%, respectively. Estimates of basal ileal endogenous loss of CP in ileal digesta varied considerably and averaged 11.84 g/kg dry matter intake (DMI), whereas IAAend for indispensable AA ranged from 0.05 g/kg DMI for Trp to 1.90 g/kg DMI for Leu. In most cases, these estimates were considerably higher than previously reported values for IAAend. The results of the present regression analysis indicate for most AA higher SID values compared with SID of most AA that were obtained by correcting AID values for IAAend. In view of the observed high variations in IAAend and the low CP content of the barley samples, estimating SID of AA based on literature data by means of the regression method may improve accuracy of SID coefficients for barley. In contrast, transformation of AID values into their corresponding SID values by using a constant correction factor for IAAend adds an additional source of error, thereby reducing the precision in estimating SID of AA.

Sixty Israeli-Friesian cows were allocated, after calving, to five treatment groups of 12 cows per group according to the concentration and source of crude protein (CP) in the concentrate. Three groups received all their protein from plant sources: a basal control group (BP) was given concentrate containing 92 g CP per kg dry matter (DM), a medium-protein group (MP) was given a diet with soya-bean meal (SBM) added to give a CP concentration of 143 g/kg DM, and a high-protein group (HP) was given a diet with SBM added to give a concentration of 180 g/kg DM. Two groups were given the basal concentrate supplemented with urea (MU) or urea phosphate (MUP) up to approximately the same CP level as the MP group. The only roughage used was vetch-oats hay at a level of 350 g/kg total DM intake. The cows were given the experimental diets ad libitum throughout lactation.

No difference was found between treatments in DM intake (kg/day), mean milk and fat-corrected milk (FCM; 40 g fat per kg) yields (kg/day), milk protein concentration, days from calving to conception or services per conception, during the entire lactation period. However, FCM yields during 60 days after calving were significantly higher for cows given the CP-supplemented diets than for the BP group. The FCM yield of the cows given the HP concentrate was higher than for those given the other concentrate mixtures only during the first 15 days after calving. Milk fat concentration was higher in cows given the BP and HP concentrates than in those given the MP ration, but only a trend in this respect was observed when part of the plant protein was replaced by urea or urea phosphate.

The rate of body-weight loss after calving tended to increase with increase in amount of plant protein in the diet but was highest for the cows given the diets supplemented with non-protein nitrogen. Later in lactation, the body-weights of cows given the MP, HP and MUP diets increased immediately after they reached their lowest weight whilst cows given the BP and MU diets started gaining weight 165 and 120 days after calving, respectively.

Rumen ammonia-N and blood urea-N concentrations (mg/1) for treatments BP, MP, HP, MU and MUP were: 56 and 101; 120 and 226; 143 and 269; 191 and 227; and 179 and 212, respectively. The relationship between rumen ammonia concentrations, blood urea concentrations and CP utilization for the different treatments is discussed. Supplying urea as urea phosphate tended to improve performance by an increase in annual milk and milk protein yields as well as in live-weight gain.

An analysis of the records of ewe weight and condition at mating together with subsequent lambing performance for several commercial flocks in the UK revealed no significant relationship between lambing performance and size, measured by weight transformed to a standard condition. The relationship between mating weight and body condition score at mating was linear though there was considerable variation in weight at a fixed body condition, suggesting a substantial spread in skeletal size. Increases in ovulation rate were not discernible from lambing figures over the range of body conditions observed in these flocks.

Attributes of lactation and weight of components of the empty body were analysed to evaluate relationships between performance potential of various breeds or breed crosses and the proportion of empty-body components relative to slaughter weight. Differences in major internal organs attributable to breed, breed cross, level of food intake, mature body size and milk production potential were observed. Milk yield was positively related to proportion of lung tissue, tended to be positively related to head and liver tissues but was negatively related to the proportion of warm carcass. As estimated from a three breed diallel, significant additive breed direct effects were observed for several empty-body components. In general, heterosis tended to be non-significant for all proportions of body components with the exception of proportion of head, fore and hind feet and lung tissue. Breed crosses characterized as having greater potential for mature weight were heavier at slaughter and had a greater proportion of structural components such as head, hide and fore and hind feet. Differences among visceral organs associated with production potential for size and milk production are discussed relative to the possible effect on basal energy expenditure and the effect these differences may have on the energy requirements for a cow/calf livestock enterprise.

Biceps femoris (BF) and masseter muscle (MM) are the mixture of slow oxidative and fast-twitch fibres. Compared with MM, BF had the significantly higher expression of myosin heavy chain (MyHC) fast IIx and IIb isoforms (MyHCIIx and MyHCIIb), but lower expression of MyHC slow isoform (MyHCI) and fast IIa isoform (MyHCIIa). The objective of this study was to investigate the expression pattern of troponin I (TnI) slow-twitch isoform (TNNI1) and fast-twitch isoform (TNNI2) in BF and MM of Yorkshire and Meishan pigs which differed significantly in the growth rate. The expression of the TNNI1 and TNNI2 peaked at the postnatal 35 days in Yorkshire pigs and postnatal 60 days in Meishan pigs. The expression of TNNI1 and TNNI2 in Meishan pigs was significantly higher than that in Yorkshire pigs at the foetal 60 days, while the opposite occurred at postnatal 35 days. The expression ratio of TNNI1 relative to TNNI2 favoured TNNI2 expression in BF and MM regardless of Yorkshire and Meishan pigs. TNNI1 expression in MM was significantly higher than that in BF at 60, 120 and 180 days in Meishan pigs and at 120 and 180 days in Yorkshire pigs. On the contrary, no significant difference of TNNI2 expression in BF and MM was found except for Yorkshire pigs of 180 days. This study provided the foundation for future research on TnI isoforms as the model gene to study mechanisms of muscle fibre-specific gene regulation in pigs.
