The possibility that restriction of pasture and controlled supplementation of the diet of milking cows with concentrates might improve the efficiency of utilisation of grazing was examined in a double reversal grazing experiment with 9 Ayrshire cows per treatment which extended over 4 months.

Cows received either pasture alone allocated daily by electric fence (treatment B), or half the pasture area plus one-third of their expected DOM intake offered as concentrates (treatment A).

In the first two periods, treatment A resulted in closer defoliation of the pasture.

Over the whole experiment there was no significant difference in yield of fat-corrected milk between treatments, although treatment A depressed butterfat percentage and raised milk yield significantly. Treatments did not influence live-weight gain significantly and toth groups gained over the season.

Feed intake estimated by chromic oxide-faecal index methods was similar for both treatments except in period 1. Intake estimates by clipping methods or by faecal index methods were in close agreement in period 1 for treatment B and in reasonable agreement in periods 2 and 3.

The results are discussed particularly with a view to the possibilities of replacing some grazing with barley or other concentrated feeds. On the available evidence this is economically feasible only where very profitable uses of the grassland saved are possible.

An investigation was conducted to test the hypothesis that dietary oil inclusion increases ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) emission from the manure, due to a negative effect of either unsaturated or saturated oil on microbial activity in the intestine. Dietary oil was included at 45 g/kg, as either crude palm oil (PO), soya oil (SO) or a 50: 50 SO: PO blend (OB), to a basal barley-soya-wheat diet (control) at the expense of dextrose and maize starch. Diets were formulated to contain 13·2 MJ digestible energy per kg and 11·0 g/kg lysine. Four boars were assigned to each dietary treatment, and were transferred to metabolism crates (mean live weight, 74·0 (± 2·89) kg) following 14 days dietary acclimatization. Urine and faeces were collected separately over a 5-day digestibility/nitrogen (N) balance period and a 2-day manure collection period. Inclusion of dietary oil increased apparent digestibility of oil (P < 0·01) and decreased the apparent digestibility of dry matter (P < 0·01) and gross energy (P < 0·05). Dietary oil did not affect the apparent digestibility of nitrogen, acid-detergent fibre, neutral-detergent fibre or hemicellulose. Apparent digestibility of oil was lower when oil was included as PO compared with SO and OB (P < 0·001). The concentration of faecal volatile fatty acid (VFA) was similar in all treatments, although the acetic: propionic acid ratio was lower when oil was included as PO and OB compared with SO (P < 0·05). N balance, manure N concentration and NH3-N emission was not affected by oil inclusion or oil source. In conclusion, dietary oil inclusion reduced apparent dry matter and energy digestibilities, although no effect on fermentation was indicated by digestibility of fibre or faecal VFA content. Consequently, ammonia emission was not affected by dietary oil included at 45 g/kg.

Thirty-six individually-penned ewes (mean live weight 69 kg), each suckling two lambs, were given one of three diets containing either 128 (low), 155 (medium) or 186 (high) g crude protein (CP) per kg dry matter. All diets contained (g/kg), milled hay, 570; molasses, 95; and a barley/fish meal concentrate, 330. The three protein concentrations were achieved by adjusting the proportions of barley and fish meal in the concentrate. Each diet was given at daily metabolizable energy (ME) intakes of 19, 23 and 27 MJ. Mean daily yields of milk in weeks 3 to 8 of lactation for ewes given the diet with the low concentration of crude protein increased from 2·32 kg at 19 MJ ME to 2·53 kg at 27 MJ. Corresponding values for the medium concentration of CP were 2·49 and 2·67 kg and for the high concentration 2·52 and 3·09 kg (P < 0·05 for differences between ME intakes and differences between dietary protein concentrations). For milk composition, interactions between the concentration of dietary protein and level of ME intake were not statistically significant but the main treatment effects were significant, with the protein concentration in milk increasing from 49·6 g/kg for ewes given the low concentration of dietary protein to 54·1 g/kg for those given the high (P < 0·001). Corresponding values for protein concentration in milk for the lowest and highest energy intake were 51·2 and 53·4 g/kg (P < 0·05). Losses of tissue protein were variable but decreased from 26 g/day for ewes given the low-protein diet to 8 g/day for those given the high. In discussing the responses in milk yield to dietary protein and ME intake attention is drawn to the modifying influence of the energy contributed from body tissue.

Boar and gilt pigs from three genotypes (with 0, 0·25 and 0·50 Duroc inclusion level) were reared from 30 to 90 kg live weight on seven feeding regimens which involved combinations of diet formulation and feeding level. A diet of conventional energy and protein level (CEP; 14·2 MJ/kg digestible energy, 205 g/kg crude protein, 10 g/kg lysine) and a diet of higher energy and lower protein (HELP; 14·7 M]/kg digestible energy, 166 g/kg crude protein, 7·0 g/kg lysine) were used. One treatment involved feeding the HELP diet ad libitum, with the other six treatments involving feeding the CEP diet ad libitum, restricted, or in combinations of ad libitum and restricted. A total of 721 animals comprising similar numbers of boars and gilts were used to estimate sex differences for growth performance, carcass and meat quality, and eating quality. Tissue growth rates were predicted from regression equations based on P2fat depths or ham-joint dissection, developed from subsamples of animals that were subjected to full-side dissection. Overall when compared with gilts, boars grew faster (838 v. 799 gtday, P < 0·001), had improved food conversion ratios (2·39 v.2-55, P < 0·001) but had similar daily food intakes and lean and subcutaneous fat growth rates. Lean tissue food conversions did not differ significantly between the sexes. Killing-out proportions were higher for gilts (0·766 v. 0·749 , P < 0·001), however P2 backfat thickness and lean proportions did not differ between the sexes. The firmness of the mid-back fat, assessed subjectively and using a penetrometer, was greater for gilts than for boars. The tenderness of pork loin chops, assessed by a trained sensory panel, was judged to be better for boars than for gilts but there was no sex difference in overall acceptability. The fat from boars had a higher level of abnormal odour and boar odour. There was a sex × dietary treatment interaction for boar odour with the HELP diet producing the highest levels and the biggest difference between the sexes for odour scores.

Live weights at weaning, and 10, 15 and 20 weeks of age, and postweaning gains of 738 lambs (390 males and 348 females) obtained from purebred and crossbred lambs were studied. The main breeds involved were the Cyprus fat-tailed, Chios and Awassi. Male lambswere heavier (P< 0·01) and grew faster (P< 0·01) than female lambs. Singles were heavier (P< 0·01) than other multiples at all ages, which probably reflects differences in initial weight, since no differences were found in growth rate. Crossbred lambs were heavier at 20 weeks of age and had a faster growth rate than purebred lambs. Ewe lactation number significantly affected lamb weaning weights, the heaviest lambs being those from 3- to 5-year-old dams (third and fourth lactation).

In pasture research and feeding trials using the growing or fattening animal to provide a measure of output, a first essential is the accurate determination of liveweight. Recent reports of trials using bullocks, sheep and dairy stock (Grassl. Res. Sta. Rep., 1953; Waite et al., 1952; Dodsworth and Campbell, 1953) have emphasised that liveweight gains can be misleading when a large and unknown proportion of the gain is due to contents of the stomachs and intestines. This ‘ fill ’ in the capacious alimentary tract of the ruminant provides a large source of experimental error in the measurement of liveweight; it can also obscure the trend of useful liveweight gain, i.e. carcass increase.

This study is an exploratory analysis for understanding the effect of a duodenal infusion of an α-linolenic acid (LNA) on the plasma and milk proteome of lactating dairy cows. Four primiparous Holstein cows were fitted with duodenal cannulas and received 0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 g/day of LNA in a two-treatment crossover design. Blood and milk were collected for determination of protein composition by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Alteration of protein spots was detected and identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight/time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-TOF MS). Plasma haptoglobin levels, and milk β-casein A2, αs1-casein variant and albumin, did not differ in cows after infusion of 0, 100, 200 and 300 g/day of LNA, but were increased after the cows received duodenal infusion of 400 g/day of LNA. Western blot analysis of haptoglobin expression in plasma confirmed the alterations in protein expression seen using MS. This study demonstrated that infusion of high doses of LNA by duodenal cannula can result in metabolic stress within the bovine intestine and in changes in milk composition.

The litter size (LS), or its equivalent the number of kids born in the litter (NB), of Creole goats in Guadeloupe was studied by two procedures. The first approach considered LS as a single trait and as a characteristic of the mother of the litter, and was studied by an univariate animal model (UAM). The second procedure treated NB, the individual birth weight (BW) and loss of kids (LK) as traits belonging to the animals born in the litter and their dam, in a multitrait animal model (MAM). The heritability for genetic direct effect (h2a) for LS estimated by UAM (0·14) was 40% lower than the corresponding value for NB estimated by MAM. The most appropriate of the 6 MAMs tested estimated heritabilities (h2a) of 0·24, 0·22 and 0·17 for NB, BW and LK, respectively, while maternal effects (h2m) were 0·20, 0·24 and 0·09 for the same characters. The genetic correlations between direct and maternal effects (ram) were negative –0·611 and –0·725 for NB and LK, respectively, and not significantly different from zero for BW. This study explored the possibility of using the information on NB, BW and LK recorded in each animal born in the litter in order to analyse the genetic variability of these traits.

1. Eight calves of each of two breed types, Friesian (Fr) and Brahman × Friesian (FB), were fed ad libitum on one of two diets; the digestibility of the dry matter of the diets was 72% and 63%. Eight calves were kept at 34°C and eight at 17°C. In a second experiment six of the calves previously exposed to 34°C were subjected to daily exposures to a radiant heat load at 32°C air temperature, while fed on the diet of lower digestibility.

2. Rectal temperatures and respiratory rates were higher, and food intakes and growth rates were lower, at 34°C than at 17°C. However there was only a small difference in growth rate between the two temperatures after the effect of temperature on food intake had been removed by regression.

3. At 34°C FB calves had lower rectal temperatures and respiratory rates than Fr calves, and when fed on the diet of higher digestibility FB calves ate more and grew faster than Fr calves at both temperatures; however there were only small corresponding differences between the breed types for calves fed on the diet of lower digestibility at both temperatures.

4. At 34°C FB calves had lighter (weight) hair coats than Fr calves and FB calves had lighter coats at 34°C than at 17°C; the latter difference was not apparent for Fr calves. Nevertheless, neither rectal temperature nor respiratory rate was significantly affected for either breed by removal of the hair coat at 34°C.

5. In the second experiment the rectal temperatures of FB calves increased by smaller amounts during exposure to radiant heat than was the case for Fr calves; FB calves had faster sweating rates than Fr calves during these exposures.

A full lactation (300 days) experiment on 32 crossbred milch cows, separated into two groups was carried out. Group 1 (control) was given a concentrate mixture consisting of 400 g groundnut cake, 300 g crushed maize, 270 g wheat bran, 20 g mineral mixture and 10 g common salt per kg; while in group 2 (experimental) the groundnut cake was replaced by water-washed neem seed kernel cake (WWNSKC). Roughage was common in both the groups. Digestion and balance study on nine cows in group 1 and eight in group 2 was carried out after 3 months experimental feeding. Milk yield was recorded twice daily and butter fat, protein and total solids were determined every month in the milk of each animal. The results showed that there was no significant difference (P > 0·05) in the milk yield, butter fat content, organoleptic evaluation of milk, dry-matter intake, digestibility of nutrients, haemoglobin, SGOT, SGPT, acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase in blood and reproductive ability of the cows in the two groups. The nitrogen balance was higher in the WWNSKC group (P < 0·05) due mainly to less excretion of urinary nitrogen and a concomitent decrease in blood urea nitrogen. It is concluded that water washing of neem seed kernel cake, whose potential availability in India alone is about 0·9 Mt annually, can convert this cake, hitherto going waste, into an excellent high protein animal food and can be used for feeding milch animals without any adverse effect. It is recommended that this technology be adopted by all neem seed-cake producing countries, specially those developing countries having chronic shortage of foods and fodders for animal feeding.

Two levels of roughage in a complete fattening diet (25 and 45%), two particle sizes of the roughage component (6 and 12 mm diameter of sieve holes), and three levels of moisture (10, 50 and 75%) were examined in a feeding trial designed in a 2 × 2 × 3 factorial arrangement.

Intact male Israeli-Friesian cattle were grown from an initial weight of about 300 kg to a slaughter weight of about 520 kg. Live-weight gains were 956, 1080 and 1025 g/day, and carcass gains were 516, 584 and 563 g/day for diet moisture contents of 10, 50 and 75%, respectively. The roughage content of the diet and particle size had no significant effects. Efficiency of conversion of metabolizable energy into live weight or carcass weight was directly related to the moisture content of the diet.

Weight of gut fill was directly related to the roughage content of the diet, to diet particle size and to moisture content. Animals on the moist diets had less carcass fat but more depot fat than those on the dry ration. Total volatile fatty acid concentration in the rumen liquor of animals fed on moist diets was significantly higher, and the acetate: propionate ratio was significantly lower than that of animals on the dry control diet.

The improvement in performance of animals fed on moist diets may be attributed to the accumulated effect of three factors, even though the effect of each separately may not be great: (a) Increased dry-matter intake; (b) Improvement in digestibility; and (c) Increased concentration of propionic acid and consequent reduction of the acetate: propionate ratio.

1. Four experiments, each with two groups of eight pigs, were performed in a controlled environment room equipped with two pens. One pen had straw as bedding and the other had slats. The animals were exposed to temperatures of about 17°C at the initial weight (20 to 25 kg). The temperature was lowered by about 1°C per 10 kg body-weight increase, to 8 to 12°C at the end of the fattening period (80 to 100 kg).

Animals on slats were kept 4·7 to 5·3°C below the calculated zone of thermoneutrality and the animals on straw 2·0 to 2·6°C above the lower limit of thermoneutrality. In Experiments 1 and 2 the animals in both pens received the same amount of food per day and in Experiments 3 and 4 animals on slats received more food to give the same body·weight gain as on straw. Feeding level on straw was about 93 g/kg0·75 per day.

2. In Experiments 1 and 2, body-weight gain on slats was reduced due to the lower effective temperature. After adjusting for feeding level, the reduction in daily gain was calculated as 18·5 and 11·8 g per °C below thermoneutrality. In Experiments 3 and 4 the extra food needed to maintain the same rate of gain on slats as on straw was respectively 18·1 and 45·5 g per °C below thermoneutrality.

3. Carcass length of animals on slats was less than on straw.

In the Mediterranean environment and subtropical microclimate of the south-east Iberian Peninsula (37° 59' N), testicle size and sexual behaviour of male goats were studied and the influence of season (day length, air temperature and relative humidity) on these factors examined.

Nine, 13-month-old Murciano-Granadina male goats weighing 47 to 53 kg were used. The experiment began during the month of January and extended for a complete year. Every 2 weeks, anterior-posterior maximum testis diameter was measured. They were tested twice a week for levels of sexual behaviour using ovariectomized goats and libido was evaluated as reaction time to mating.

The annual mean testis diameter was 5·06 (s.e. 0·02) cm, varying significantly with season of the year. The lowest values were measured during winter 4·89 (s.e. 0·03) cm. These increased (P <0·01) in spring (5·16 (s.e. 0·01) cm) and summer (5·19 (s.e. 0·02) cm), but decreased again (P <0·01) in the autumn (5·04 (s.e. 0·02) cm). The annual mean reaction time was 197 (s.e. 12) s, but was longest (P <0·01) in spring (318 (s.e. 30) s), and shortest during summer (144 (s.e. 16) s) and autumn (132 (s.e. 17) s). The testicle diameter measurement was correlated with day length (r = 0·41; P <0·01) and air temperature (r = 0·45; P<0·01), while the reaction time showed no relationship with climatic measurements.

It was concluded that day length is not the only factor responsible for seasonal variation in testis size of Murciano-Granadina male goats and that, in their natural habitat, libido is unlikely to be a limiting factor in the breeding programme.

Data collected on the Meat and Livestock Commission's pedigree recording scheme have been analysed by least-squares procedures to measure the effect of environmental factors on calf performance. In total 5524 birth weights, 16 484 200-day weights and 6248 400-day weights were available for 765 herds and seven breeds. The model adopted included terms representing type of cattle within breed, sex of calf, age of dam, year and month of birth, pre-weaning management, herd average level of performance and herd size as fixed effects with sires as random effects. The model accounted for between 19 and 36% of the variation in birth weights and for 36 to 49% and 39 to 69% of variation in 200- and 400-day weights respectively, depending upon breed. For birth weights and 200-day weights age of dam was a significant effect in all breeds. Sex of calf was the main source of variation at all ages, its relative importance increasing with age. Calves from 2-yr-old dams had 200-day weights 5 to 11% lower and calves out of 3-yr-old dams 2 to 9% lower than calves from 5- to 8-yr-old dams. Month of birth was a significant source of variation in most breeds. Pre-weaning management system was confounded with sex and breed. Correction factors for use in the MLC recording scheme were derived from the data.

Reductions in insulin sensitivity in periparturient dairy cows develop as a means to support lactation; however, excessive mobilization of fatty acids (FA) increases the risk for peripartal metabolic disorders. Our objectives were to investigate the effect of prepartum body condition score (BCS) on systemic glucose and insulin tolerance, and to compare direct and indirect measurements of insulin sensitivity in peripartal lean and overweight dairy cows. Fourteen multiparous Holstein cows were allocated into two groups according to their BCS at day −28 prepartum: lean (n = 7; BCS ≤ 3.0) or overweight; (n = 7; BCS ≥ 4.0). Liver biopsies were performed on day −27, −14 and 4, relative to expected parturition. Intravenous insulin or glucose tolerances tests were performed following each liver biopsy. Relative to lean cows, overweight cows exhibited lower dry matter intake, lost more BCS and displayed increased plasma FA and β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations and elevated liver lipid content during peripartum. Glucose clearance rate was lower for all cows postpartum. Prepartum BCS had minimal effects on insulin and glucose tolerance; however, the ability of the cow to restore blood glucose levels following an insulin challenge was suppressed by increased BCS. Glucose-dependent parameters of insulin and glucose tolerance were not correlated with surrogate indices of insulin sensitivity. We conclude that prepartum BCS had minimal effect on systemic insulin sensitivity following parturition. The observed inconsistency between surrogate indices of insulin sensitivity and direct measurements of insulin and glucose tolerance adds support to growing concerns regarding their usefulness as tools to estimate systemic insulin action in periparturient cows.

Six Hereford and Shorthorn cross steers were ultrasonically scanned in parallel planes perpendicular to the spine. Scanning was performed at the level of each vertebra and extended from the head of the 9th rib to the articulation of the 3rd and 4th lumbar vertebrae. Scans of each live animal were compared with those of its hot carcass and related to dissected sections of the frozen carcass. In general, the difference between an ultrasonic estimate and the carcass measurement was found to depend on the anatomical parameter being investigated, the location on the animal at which measurement was made and the individual interpreting the scan. Results are presented for fat thickness, Mm. longissimi thoracis et lumborum depth, ‘A’, ‘B’ and area measurements. Possible explanations for some discrepancies between the ultrasonic and carcass measurements are discussed.

Additional results showed that whilst judges are consistent within themselves, in general their interpretations of ultrasonic scans differ significantly from each other.

The efficiency of marker-assisted introgression programmes, expressed as genetic lag relative to a commercial population under continuous selection, was investigated using analytical methods. A genetic model was assumed for which the genetic variance in the introgression population was a function of the within-breed genetic variance and the initial breed difference. It was found that most of the genetic lag occurs in the latter stages of an introgression programme, when males and females which are heterozygous for the alíele to be introgressed are mated to produce homozygous individuals. Reducing genetic lag through selection on genomie proportion by using genetic markers throughout the genome, i.e. by selecting heterozygous individuals which resemble the recipient (commercial) population most, was effective if the initial breed difference was very large (e.g. 20 within-breed phenotypic standard deviations). In that case, selection solely on genetic markers could be practised to speed up genome recovery of the commercial line. If the initial breed difference is small, phenotypic or best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) selection is superior in reducing genetic lag under the assumed genetic model.

In tropical regions, protein supplementation is a common practice in dairy and beef farming. However, the effect of highly degradable protein in ruminal fermentation and microbial community composition has not yet been investigated in a systematic manner. In this work, we aimed to investigate the impact of casein supplementation on volatile fatty acids (VFA) production, specific activity of deamination (SAD), ammonia concentration and bacterial and archaeal community composition. The experimental design was a 4×4 Latin square balanced for residual effects, with four animals (average initial weight of 280±10 kg) and four experimental periods, each with duration of 29 days. The diet comprised Tifton 85 (Cynodon sp.) hay with an average CP content of 9.8%, on a dry matter basis. Animals received basal forage (control) or infusions of pure casein (230 g) administered direct into the rumen, abomasum or divided (50 : 50 ratio) in the rumen/abomasum. There was no differences (P>0.05) in ruminal pH and microbial protein concentration between supplemented v. non-supplemented animals. However, in steers receiving ruminal infusion of casein the SAD and ruminal ammonia concentration increased 33% and 76%, respectively, compared with the control. The total concentration of VFA increased (P<0.05) in steers receiving rumen infusion of casein. SAD and the microbial protein concentration did not vary significantly among treatments during the feeding cycle, but mean SAD values were greater in steers supplemented in the rumen and rumen/abomasum. Ruminal ammonia concentration was positively correlated with SAD in animals receiving ruminal infusion of casein. Polymerase chain reaction–denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) analysis revealed low similarity between treatments, animals and time of sample collection. Richness analysis and determination of the Shannon–Wiener index indicated no differences (P>0.05) in species richness and diversity of γ-proteobacteria, firmicutes and archaea between non-supplemented Nellore steers and steers receiving casein supplementation in the rumen. However, species richness and the Shannon–Wiener index were lower (P<0.05) for the phylum bacteroidetes in steers supplemented with casein in the rumen compared with non-supplemented animals. Venn diagrams indicated that the number of unique bands varied considerably among individual animals and was usually higher in number for non-supplemented steers compared with supplemented animals. These results add new knowledge about the effects of ruminal and postruminal protein supplementation on metabolic activities of rumen microbes and the composition of bacterial and archaeal communities in the rumen of steers.

Developing alternatives to antibiotics is an urgent need in livestock production. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are regarded as powerful antibiotic substitutes (ASs) because AMPs have broad-spectrum antimicrobial activities and growth-promoting ability. Here, we aimed to comprehensively assess the effects of AMPs on the growth performance, diarrhea rate, intestinal morphology and immunity of healthy or challenged piglets, compared with an antibiotics group or negative control group. We performed a set of meta-analyses of feeding trials from database inception to 27 May 2019. Among the 1379 identified studies, 20 were included in our meta-analyses (56 arms and 4067 piglets). The meta-analyses revealed that (1) compared with the negative control group, AMPs significantly improved the healthy piglets’ average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), gain : feed ratio (G/F), levels of immune globulin (Ig) IgM and IgG, and intestinal villus height : crypt depth ratio (V/C) (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, AMPs significantly increased the challenged piglets’ ADG, ADFI, G/F and V/C of the jejunum and ileum, and notably deceased the diarrhea rate (P < 0.05); (2) compared with antibiotics group, the effects of AMPs were slightly weaker than those of antibiotics in the healthy piglets, but AMPs have similar effects to those of antibiotics in challenged piglets. In a higher purity, the optimal dose of AMPs may be approximately 0.01%. Our findings indicate that AMPs can improve piglet growth performance, enhance immunity, benefit intestinal morphology and decrease the diarrheal rate. AMPs could be great ASs especially under infection conditions.

Predicting the grass dry matter intake (GDMI), milk yield (MY) or milk fat and protein yield (milk solids yield (MSY)) of the grazing dairy herd is difficult. Decisions with regard to grazing management are based on guesstimates of the GDMI of the herd, yet GDMI is a critical factor influencing MY and MSY. A data set containing animal, sward, grazing management and concentrate supplementation variables recorded during weeks of GDMI measurement was used to develop multiple regression equations to predict GDMI, MY and MSY. The data set contained data from 245 grazing herds from 10 published studies conducted at Teagasc, Moorepark. A forward stepwise multiple regression technique was used to develop the multiple regression equations for each of the dependent variables (GDMI, MY, MSY) for three periods during the grazing season: spring (SP; 5 March to 30 April), summer (SU; 1 May to 31 July) and autumn (AU; 1 August to 31 October). The equations generated highlighted the importance of different variables associated with GDMI, MY and MSY during the grazing season. Peak MY was associated with an increase in GDMI, MY and MSY during the grazing season with the exception of GDMI in SU when BW accounted for more of the variation. A higher body condition score (BCS) at calving was associated with a lower GDMI in SP and SU and a lower MY and MSY in all periods. A higher BCS was associated with a higher GDMI in SP and SU, a higher MY in SU and AU and a higher MSY in all periods. The pre-grazing herbage mass of the sward (PGHM) above 4 cm was associated with a quadratic effect on GDMI in SP, on MY in SP and SU and on MSY in SU. An increase in daily herbage allowance (DHA) above 4 cm was associated with an increase in GDMI in AU, an increase in MY in SU and AU and MSY in AU. Supplementing grazing dairy cows with concentrate reduced GDMI and increased MY and MSY in all periods. The equations generated can be used by the Irish dairy industry during the grazing season to predict the GDMI, MY and MSY of grazing dairy herds.
