A total of 40 individually-penned British Friesian male calves were offered milk substitutes ad libitum from 2 days until 12 weeks of age. Ten milks were reconstitued from either liquid or spray-dried skim milk and a fat-filled (500 g fat per kg) powder and contained 80, 110, 140, 170 or 200 g dry matter (DM) per kg liquid. A further six calves were used in a randomized-block experiment to measure the digestibility, absorption and retention of the diets containing 80, 140 and 200 g DM per kg.

There are no significant differences in the intake, growth rate, digestibility, absorption or retention between calves given milk substitutes reconstituted from liquid or spray-dried skim milk.

At all ages, as the DM concentration of the milks increased, liquid intake decreased but DM intake and live-weight gain increased. The mean live-weight gain was 0·99, 1·13, 1·16, 1·28 and 1·27 kg/day for calves given the milk substitute diet at concentrations of 80, 110, 140, 170 and 200 g DM per kg, respectively. The DM intake to live-weight ratios were constant at all ages when live weight was expressed to the power of 0·61.

No significant adverse effect of the diets was evident from the fortnightly monitoring of jugular blood samples for packed cell volume and concentrations of glucose, urea-N, Na, total protein, albumin, globulin and haemoglobin; nor from faecal consistency, rectal temperature, heart rate and respiration rate.

There was no indication that age affected digestibility, except that digestive efficiency was reduced in calves with diarrhoea, particularly at 2 to 4 weeks of age; nor that dietary concentration influenced digestion or absorption. The true absorption of N, Ca and P from the milk diets was high with mean coefficients of 0·99, 1·01 and 0·95 respectively. The main endogenous losses of N and P occurred through the urine and of Ca through the faeces.

A computer program is described which allows the calculation throughout pregnancy of the energy requirements of a ewe of any weight carrying any number of foetuses. The calculations rely on a prediction of potential lamb birth weight, from which a foetal growth curve of weight against time from conception is generated. Tied to the foetal growth curve are the growths of the placenta and fluids, while growth of the uterus is related to the ewe's weight at mating. Weights are converted to energy through energy density curves applicable through pregnancy for each component. An efficiency factor converts this energy requirement into a metabolizable energy requirement. With assumptions on the maintenance requirements for the ewe-foetus system, the total requirement for energy during pregnancy is calculated.

Predictions from the model are compared with other estimates of energy requirements available in the literature. The sensitivity of the predictions of energy requirements for the pregnant ewe to variations in the assumptions made in the construction of the model is discussed. The most important assumptions are those on the maintenance requirements for the ewe-foetus system. Effects on the predicted energy requirements of varying either the efficiency for foetal growth or the gestation length are also discussed.

MicroRNA (miRNA) have been identified in circulating blood and might have the potential to be used as biomarkers for several pathophysiological conditions. To identify miRNA that are altered following stress events, turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) were subjected to 2 h of road transportation. The expression levels of five circulating miRNA, namely miR-22, miR-155-5p, miR-181a-3p, miR-204 and miR-365-3p, were detected and assessed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction using TaqMan® probes, as potential biomarkers of stress. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves were then used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of miRNA. A panel of three stress-responsive miRNA, miR-22, miR-155 and miR-365 were identified; their expression levels were significantly higher after road transportation and the area under the curve (AUC) were 0.763, 0.71 and 0.704, respectively. Combining the three miRNA a specificity similar to the one found for the three miRNA separately was found. The AUC of the weighted average of the three miRNA was 0.763. This preliminary study suggests that the expression levels of circulating miR-22, miR-155 and miR-365 are increased during transport-related stress and that they may have diagnostic value to discriminate between stressed- and unstressed animals.

Protein is the most costly nutrient in fish feed, and while diets offered in the early stages of development typically have high levels of CP, they do not always correspond to the real requirements of the animals. Thus, research that seeks to learn the true nutritional requirements of fish is fundamental to improving commercial fish culture. The present study evaluated the protein requirements of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) under larviculture. Fish performance, gene expression for digestive enzymes and their enzymatic activity and stress response to air exposure were analyzed. Four experimental diets differing in CP level were formulated: 30%, 36%, 42% and 48%. Fish larvae were fed the experimental diets during development and sampled 10, 20 and 30 days after the beginning of the experiment for performance, gene expression and enzymatic activity. At sampling time 30, stress resistance was also evaluated by means of an air exposure test. At sampling time 10, CP levels between 36% and 48% could be used for a better performance. During this period, pepsinogen expression was greater for 30% CP, intermediate for 42% and lower for 36% and 48%. After this initial period, diets of between 30% and 42% CP are recommended for better performance. At sampling time 20, gene expression for digestive enzymes and their enzymatic activity were similar for all diets tested. At sampling time 30, the diet of 42% CP induced both greater pepsinogen expression and pepsin activity. Survival after the air exposure test after 30 days of feeding was influenced by CP level in the diet, with the highest survival being for fish fed with 36% CP. Taken together, the present results demonstrate that dietary CP influences digestive enzyme gene expression and activity, and suggest that the best CP levels for Nile tilapia larviculture vary depending on larval stage.

Changes in the frequency of the poll gene and the effect of polledness on production were measured from 1970 to 1979 in four closed lines of crossbred cattle. The lines were Africander cross (AX), Braham cross (BX) and two Hereford × Shorthorn (HS lines, one selected for production (HSS) and one a control line (HSR).

Calves were classified as horned, polled or scurred. Except in the HSS line, horned males were more common than horned females. Horned HS bulls sired only horned calves when mated to horned cows but corresponding matings of AX and BX breeds produced some polled progeny. The incidence of scurs was highest in the AX line, lowest in the HS lines and higher in males than females. These observations are discussed in relation to existing models of inheritance of horn-type.

Prior to 1970 the frequencies of the poll gene declined from their initial values in the BX and HS lines and increased in the AX line. These changes were ascribed to random genetic drift. After 1970 the frequency of the poll gene remained stable in all lines.

No significant differences were observed between horned and polled cattle in live weight, fertility or mortality rates indicating that polledness had no detrimental effect on production in these lines.

1. Experiments carried out in two herds to examine the effects of a treatment designed to induce oestrus and ovulation during the lactational anoestrus of the sow and to allow the establishment of pregnancy during lactation are described. Two aspects are examined: (a) the effects on the reproductive performance of the sow of repetition of the treatment in successive lactations and (b) the effects of the treatment on the suckled young.

2. The treatment involved the separation of each sow and litter for 12 hr on days 21, 22 and 23 of lactation followed by an injection of 1500 IU pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) at the end of the third period of separation.

3. It is concluded that oestrus and ovulation can be induced with some consistency in the fourth week of lactation, that lactation is not incompatible with the first two to three weeks of pregnancy, and that the establishment of pregnancy during the fourth week of lactation is not detrimental to the growth of the suckled young when supplementary food is provided.

Current feeding recommendations for lactating sows may be inappropriate for modern genotypes with high milk production. The introduction of the prolific but obese Meishan breed into sow lines also necessitates a review of nutrient requirements. A 2 × 2 factorial experiment was used to investigate the influence of breed type (Meishan synthetic 50% (M) and purebred European White (W) on response to dietary protein level (L = 140 g crude protein (CP) per kg, 6 g lysine per kg; H = 181 g CP per kg, 9 g lysine per kg) over a 5-week lactation. Milk yield (days 5, 9, 13,17, 21 and 28), milk composition and piglet growth and body composition were measured to quantify aspects of lactational performance. M had higher litter sizes throughout lactation (P < 0·001) and produced more milk than W(M = 10·04 W = 7·85 (s.e.d. 0·521) kg/day, P < 0·001) and milk of a higher fat content (M = 79·6 W = 75·0 (s.e.d. 5·71 g/kg, P < 0·05). Total solids were not significantly different between treatments. H produced higher milk protein content than L (L = 43·0 H = 55·7 (s.e.d. 3.01) g/kg, P = 0·05). Litter growth rates showed a breed effect (P < 0·001), diet effect (P < 0·001) and a breed × diet interaction (ML = 2·41 MH = 3·21 WL = 2·07 WH = 2·07 (s.e.d. 0·658) kg/day, P < 0·001). M piglets had higher fat deposition rates (M = 37 W = 24 (s.e.d. 4.5) g/day, P < 0·05). L piglets had a lower protein (P < 0·05) and fat (P < 0·05) deposition rate compared with H piglets. Higher litter growth rates of M sows resulted from a combination of increased milk yield and f at content and this was further enhanced by additional dietary protein. W sows showed no milk yield response to dietary protein but reduced maternal tissue catabolism.

Lactation in goats is associated with an insulin resistance manifested by an impairment of the ability of insulin maximally to stimulate skeletal muscle glucose utilization. The mechanism responsible for this modification is unknown. Therefore an investigation was made of the insulin-sensitive glucose transporter (GLUT-4) in three skeletal muscles from six lactating (peak of lactation) and six non-lactating goats. GLUT-4 protein content was assessed in crude membrane preparations and Triton X-100 extracts by Western-blot analysis. Lactation resulted in a decrease in GLUT-4 protein content. This decrease was more pronounced in oxidoglycolytic muscles (proportionately -0·40 to -0·60 in m. tensor fasciae latae and longissimus dorsi) than in oxidative muscles (-0·20 in masseter). Down-regulation of the insulin-sensitive glucose transporter (GLUT-4) expression in skeletal muscles from lactating goats may be responsible for the decrease in insulin responsiveness of glucose utilization previously observed in vivo.

A study was conducted to evaluate increasing dietary levels of threonine on performance and carcass quality of growing gilt pigs (live-weight period of 50 to 95 kg; no. = 384) by using two different types of basal diets. One basal diet (basal A) was composed of highly digestible food ingredients and the other diet (basal B) of less well digested food ingredients. Before starting the growth trial, Heal apparent digestibility ofamino acids of both basal diets was determined in an in vivo digestibility trial with pigs. Both basal diets were composed in such a way as to obtain equal contents for net energy and Heal digestible threonine, lysine, methionine + cystine and tryptophan. The content of Heal digestible threonine in both basal diets was approximately 3·3 g/kg, corresponding with a total threonine content of 4·8 g/kg in basal diet A and 5·4 g/kg in basal diet B. To both diets three graded dose levels (0·4, 0·8 and 1·2 g/kg) of L-threonine were added, providing at the highest supplemented level 4·5 g/kg Heal digestible threonine. The requirement for Heal digestible threonine was estimated to be 4·1 g/kg regardless of diet composition. This estimated requirement was mainly based on the results for food conversion efficiency. For obtaining maximum weight gain, the requirement for Heal digestible threonine was found to be somewhat higher than for maximum efficiency of food utilization. The estimated requirement figure of 4·1 g Heal digestible threonine corresponded with approximately 5·6 g total threonine per kg in basal diet A and 6·2 g/kg in basal diet B. Carcass quality was not affected by the content of threonine in the diets.

The influence of the potential methane reducer, fumaric acid (FA), on ruminal parameters, the rumen wall and organ weights was investigated in a long-term study with growing bulls. In all, 20 bulls were fed with maize or grass silage as roughage, and with concentrate with or without 300 g FA per animal and day during the whole fattening period. After slaughtering, the organs were weighed and blood serum was analysed for glucose, β-hydroxybutyric acid (BHB) and non-esterified fatty acid concentration. The ruminal fluid was analysed for short-chain fatty acids, ammonia-N and the microbial community via single strand conformation polymorphism analysis. The rumen wall was examined histopathologically and results were graded as ‘no visible lesions’, ‘few inflammatory infiltrates’, ‘some inflammatory infiltrates’ or ‘several inflammatory infiltrates’. In addition, the dimensions of the rumen villi were measured. The FA supplementation decreased the serum BHB concentration and the butyric acid concentration in the ruminal fluid. The microbial community in the ruminal fluid was not influenced by FA. An interaction between FA and silage type was observed for the inflammation centres counted in the villous area of rumen papillae. This interaction was also observed in the length and surface of the rumen villi. Rumen villi results show that the influence of FA depends on the roughage used in the diet.

Mechanical forces during machine milking induce changes in teat condition which can be differentiated into short-term and long-term changes. Machine milking-induced short-term changes in teat condition (STC) are defined as tissue responses to a single milking and have been associated with the risk of new intramammary infection. Albeit, their association with teat characteristics, such as teat-end shape, has not been investigated by rigorous methods. The primary objective was to determine the association of STC, as measured by ultrasonography, with teat-end shape. The second objective was to describe possible differences in the recovery time of teat tissue after machine milking among teats with different teat-end shapes. Holstein cows (n=128) were enrolled in an observational study, housed in free-stall pens with sand bedding and milked three times a day. Ultrasonography of the left front and right hind teat was performed after teat preparation before milking (t−1), immediately after milking (t0) and 1, 3, 5 and 7 h after milking (t1, t3, t5, t7). The teat tissue parameters measured from ultrasound scans were teat canal length, teat-end diameter, teat-end diameter at the midpoint between the distal and proximal end of the teat canal, teat wall thickness, and teat cistern width. Teat-end shape was assessed visually and classified into three categories: pointed, flat and round. Multivariable linear regression analyses showed differences in the relative change of teat tissue parameters (compared with t−1) at t0 among teats with different teat-end shapes, with most parameters showing the largest change for round teats. The premilking values were reached (recovery time) after 7 h in teats with a pointed teat-end shape, whereas recovery time was greater than 7 h in teats with flat and round teat-end shapes. Under the same liner and milking machine conditions, teats with a round teat-end shape had the most severe short-term changes. The results of this observational study indicated that teat-end shape may be one of the factors that contribute to the severity of STC.

This study aimed at evaluating the influence of dietary glutamine, glutamic acid and nucleotides on duodenal and jejunal carbon turnover, and on mucosa morphometry of piglets weaned at an age of 21 days. The diets were: additive-free diet – control (C); 1% of glutamine (G); 1% of glutamic acid (GA); and 1% of nucleotides (N). In intestinal mucosa morphometry trial, 65 animals were used. At day 0 (baseline), five animals were slaughtered to determine the villus height (VH), crypt depth (CD), VH : CD ratio and villi density (VD). The remaining 60 animals were allocated into a randomized block design with 4×3 factorial arrangement (four diets: C – control, G – glutamine, GA – glutamic acid and N – nucleotides; three slaughter ages: 7, 14 and 21 days post-weaning) with five piglets slaughtered per treatment. In carbon turnover trial, 123 animals were used. At day 0 (baseline), three animals were slaughtered to quantify the δ13C half-life (T50%) and the 99% carbon substitution (T99%) on intestinal mucosa. The remaining 120 animals were blocked by three weight categories (light, medium and heavy) and, randomly assigned to pen with the same four diets from the previous trial with one piglet slaughtered per weight category per treatment at days 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 13, 20, 27 and 49 after weaning. Morphometric analyses have yielded no consistent results regarding the action of the evaluated additives, and few reproducible age-related effects. The N diets determined lower T50% values (5.18 days) and T99% (17.21 days) than G and C diets (T50%=7.29, 7.58 days and T99%=24.22, 25.17 days, respectively) in the duodenal mucosa. In jejunum, the N, GA and G diets determined the lowest T50% means (4.9, 6.2 and 6.7 days, respectively) and T99% means (15.34, 21.10 and 21.84 days, respectively) in comparison with C diets (T50%=7.44 and T99%=24.72 days). The inclusion of the additives in the diets of piglets accelerated the carbon turnover in piglets during the post-weaning period. The stable isotopes technique (δ13C) is an important methodology in studies of additives with trophic effects on the intestinal mucosa of the piglets.

A field study involving 1087 cows and 191 heifers on nine carefully selected English dairy farms was conducted to evaluate the effect of nematocidal treatment on subsequent milk production. As many of the cattle as possible were allocated to pairs according to specific criteria and dosed with either levamisole and oxyclozanide, or oxyclozanide alone, soon after calving. The remaining unpaired animals were assigned alternately to the two treatment groups according to calving date. The milk production and health status of all the cattle in the study were closely monitored.

Analysis of pooled milk production data over a 2-year period failed to show a statistically significant response to nematocidal treatment. When individual herd data were analysed, a significant response to treatment was recorded on one farm. It was noted that the apparent value of the response varied according to method of analysis.

Factors considered likely to account for differences in response between farms and also between trials are considered.

The aim of this research was to determine the influence of dietary replacement of n-6 with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on cellular immunity and oxidative stress in the transition period dairy cows. The experiment was conducted on 20 dairy Holstein cows from 3±1 weeks before parturition until the 6th week of lactation. Both groups were fed an iso-energetic and iso-nitrogenous diet. Soybean meal from control (C) group was replaced with linseed in the experimental (LS) group. Cellular immunity and oxidative stress were measured on days −10, 1, 21 and 42 relative to parturition. During the entire experimental period, the proportion of CD45+ cells was lower (P<0.05) in LS group compared with the C group. The phagocytosis ability and phagocytosis index of cows fed with n-3 fatty acids were significantly reduced (P<0.05) compared with the group of cows fed with n-6 fatty acids. The most severe decrease in phagocytosis ability was on day −10 and 1 relative to parturition. The activity of superoxide dismutase (P<0.05) and plasma glutathione peroxidase (P<0.05) increased around calving, although activities were not influenced by dietary treatment. Increased malondialdehyde concentration (P<0.05) was influenced by dietary n-3 fatty acids and the time relative to parturition. The immune suppression was most pronounced during periparturient period. In that matter we can conclude that not only dietary n-3 fatty acids but also oxidative stress, which reached peak at time of parturition, contributed to the reduced cellular immunity during the periparturient period.

The effects of a marine oil-based n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (mLCPUFA) supplement fed to the sow from weaning, through the rebreeding period, during gestation and until end of lactation on litter characteristics from birth until weaning were studied in sows with known litter birth weight phenotypes. It was hypothesized that low birth weight (LBW) litters would benefit more from mLCPUFA supplementation than high birth weight litters. A total of 163 sows (mean parity=4.9±0.9) were rebred after weaning. Sows were pair-matched by parity and litter average birth weight of the previous three litters. Within pairs, sows were allocated to be fed either standard corn/soyabean meal-based gestation and lactation diets (CON), or the same diets enriched with 0.5% of the mLCPUFA supplement at the expense of corn. Each litter between 9 and 16 total pigs born was classified as LBW or medium/high average birth weight (MHBW) litter and there was a significant correlation (P<0.001) between litter average birth weight of the current and previous litters within sows (r=0.49). Sow serum was harvested at day 113 of gestation for determination of immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations. The number of pigs born total and alive were lower (P=0.01) in mLCPUFA than CON sows, whereas the number of stillborn and mummified pigs were similar between treatments. Number of stillborns (trend) and mummies (P<0.01) were higher in LBW than MHBW litters. Tissue weights and brain : tissue weight ratios were similar between treatments, but LBW litters had decreased tissue weights and increased brain : tissue weight ratios compared with MHBW litters. Placental weight was lower (P=0.01) in LBW than MHBW litters, but was not different between treatments. Average and total litter weight at day 1 was similar between treatments. mLCPUFA increased weaning weight (P=0.08) and average daily gain (P<0.05) in MHBW litters, but not in LBW litters. Pre-weaning mortality was similar between treatments, but was higher (P<0.01) in LBW than MHBW litters. IgG concentration in sow serum was similar between treatments and litter birth weight categories. In conclusion, litter birth weight phenotype was repeatable within sows and LBW litters showed the benchmarks of intra-uterine growth retardation (lower placental weight and brain sparing effects). As maternal mLCPUFA supplementation decreased litter size overall, only improved litter growth rate until weaning in MHBW litters, and did not affect pre-weaning mortality, maternal mLCPUFA supplementation was not an effective strategy in our study for mitigating negative effects of a LBW litter phenotype.

By mean of egg transfer, lambs of a large breed of sheep (Lincoln) were born out of dams of a small breed (Welsh Mountain) and vice versa. One breed was approximately twice the weight of the other. The effects of this contrast in maternal environment upon the development of the wool follicles and upon subsequent wool production are described in this paper. These effects are compared with differences between singles and twins.

Data were obtained from skin and wool samples taken at birth and at 84 days post-partum.

Genetic differences were the largest single source of variation for most of the component characters of the skin and fleece.

Strong maternal influences were in evidence. These were shown to have affected both Lincoln and Welsh lambs in a general (average) way and also to have had different, specific effects on each genotype as shown by genotype-environment interactions. Differences in maternal environment following egg transfer, clearly affected follicle density, primary/secondary follicle ratio, fibre medullation, fibre diameter and fibre length. Wool production was not affected, apparently because reduced follicle density was associated with increased fibre length.

In the comparison between singles and twins the latter appeared to suffer a post-natal rather than a pre-natal restriction of secondary follicle development, and in the absence of extra fibre growth there was reduced wool production at 84 days.

An experiment was conducted to measure the growth and body composition changes of highly selected boars and gilts from 10 to 150 kg live weight. Thirty boars and 30 gilts were given food ad libitum and two pigs of each sex were slaughtered at 10-kg increments from 10 kg to 150 kg live weight at which time the chemical composition of the body was determined. Boars and gilts exhibited different patterns of growth, nitrogen deposition rate (NDR) and lipid deposition rate (LDR) with boars exhibiting a sharp peak in daily live-weight gain and NDR while gilts exhibited almost a flat response curve over the age and weight range tested. Gilts experienced a peak in LDR at a lighter weight than boars (75·8 v. 100·5 kg) while NDR peaked at the same weight for both sexes (70·8 kg). Maximum NDR for boars and gilts was 37·7 and 28·1 glday (235·5 and 175·5 glday protein deposition rate) respectively. The Gompertz growth equation [Y = A + C × EXP (−EXP (−B ×(X−M)))] was shown to accurately represent the growth trajectory, while the logarithmic derivative of the allometric equation [Y = aXb] was used to determine live weight and body composition relationships. Combined sex relationships indicated that total body nitrogen and lipid concentrations increased at the same rate. A quadratic equation for the prediction of NDR based on live weight was developed for this genotype (NDR = 24·06 + 0·34 W − 0·002W2). In conclusion, the results provide a basis for comparison of body composition and growth patterns between the highly selected genotype tested and pigs from other genetic backgrounds. Sex effects exist for growth and body composition but combined sex prediction equations can be used to estimate NDR potential.

Factors influencing reproductive performance and calf and dam live weights were examined for two indigenous breeds, Angoni and Barotse, and an introduced breed, Boran, under ranching conditions in Zambia.

Over 5 years, 675 Angoni, 731 Barotse and 815 Boran records gave calving percentages of 82·5, 78·1 and 75·4 respectively. Year was an important influence on calving and weaning percentages in all breeds; age of dam had little effect and status at mating was only important in the Angoni breed, in which lactating dams produced more calves than dry dams.

Mean calf weaning weights were 147·3, 167·0 and 169·5 kg for the Angoni, Barotse and Boran dam breeds respectively. Hereford, Friesian and Boran bulls sired heavier progeny than Angoni and Barotse. Dam age and status did not influence calf weights, which were positively correlated with dam weights and negatively correlated with dam weight change during lactation.

Dam live weights at the beginning of the breeding season were 313, 357 and 348 kg for the Angoni, Barotse and Boran breeds respectively. Angoni and Boran dams reached maximum live weight at 7 years and Barotses at 9 years. Subsequent calving rate was not influenced by live weight at the beginning of the breeding season nor, in lactating dams, by live-weight change between the autumn peak and mid breeding season.

Following the discovery of low serum copper (Cu) concentrations in 9-month-old beef calves at pasture in autumn (50% of animals had values <7·5 μmol/l), genetic variation in serum Cu concentration was studied in an experimental Angus herd in New Zealand, monitoring at intervals from about 7 to 17 months of age. The study was initiated in autumn when animals were supplemented with zinc (Zn) salts (to protect against liver injury from toxin-producing facial eczema spores on the pasture), and later in the production year after Cu supplementation but without Zn supplementation. Heritabilities of Cu concentration were estimated in 837 calves from six calf crops, the progeny of 47 sires, using restricted maximum likelihood procedures with an animal model. Correlations between Cu concentration and Zn concentration were also estimated, along with correlations between Cu concentration and 6-month, 9-month and yearling live weights. The heritability estimate for Cu concentration at all times outside the autumn Zn supplementation period was 0·28±0·08 (between-animal repeatability, 0·30±0·05), and the heritability estimates for autumn Cu concentration and Zn concentration were 0·35±0·11 and 0·26±0·13, respectively. The genetic and environmental correlations between autumn Cu concentration and Zn concentration were ?0·29±0·31 and 0·15±0·11, respectively, suggesting antagonistic effects between Zn and Cu only at the genetic level, with a net (phenotypic) correlation of 0·02±0·06. Genetic correlations between Cu concentration (outside the autumn season) and 6-month, 9-month and yearling weights ranged from 0·15±0·15 to 0·17±0·16. It was concluded that serum Cu and Zn concentrations in calves were heritable traits under the grazing conditions encountered, and that index selection to increase live weights and Cu concentrations could be applied if desired.

Dynamics of myofiber differentiation/maturation in porcine skeletal muscle is associated with domestication, breeding and rearing conditions. This study was aimed to comparatively elucidate the age-dependent myosin heavy chain (MyHC) isoform expression and transition pattern in domestic and wild pig (WP) skeletal muscle from birth until adulthood. Domestic pigs (DPs) of Large White breed raised in conventional production system were compared with WPs reared in a large hunting enclosure. Muscle samples for immuno/enzyme histochemistry were taken from the longissimus dorsi muscle within 24 h postmortem at 24 to 48 h, 21 to 23 days, 7 months and ~2 years postpartum. Based on the antibody reactivity to MyHCs (NCL-MHCs, A4.74, BF-F3) and succinate dehydrogenase activity, myofibers were classified into I, I/IIa, IIa, IIx and IIb types. In addition, foetal MyHC expression was determined with the use of F158.4C10 antibody. Maturation of the longissimus dorsi muscle in the WP was characterized by an accelerated transformation of the fast to slow MyHC during the first hours postpartum, followed by differentiation towards oxidative myofibers in which type I, IIa and IIx MyHCs predominated. In the DP, the transformation shifted towards glycolytic myofibers that expressed MyHC-IIb. The expression of foetal MyHC was higher in the DP than in the WP at 1 day of age, and the decline in the foetal MyHC during the first 3 weeks was more rapid in the WP than in the DP denoting an accelerated early postnatal muscle maturation in WP than DP piglets. All foetal MyHC-positive myofibers co-expressed IIa isoform, but not vice versa. The intense myofiber hypertrophy was evident from 3 weeks until 7 months of age. In this period, the myofiber cross-sectional area increased up to 10- and 20-fold in the WP and the DP, respectively. In the DP, the hypertrophy of all myofiber types was more pronounced than in the WP, particularly the hypertrophy of IIx and IIb myofibers. To summarize, the comparison between growing DP with wild ancestors showed that genetic selection and rearing conditions lead to substantial changes in the direction and intensity of postnatal MyHC transformation as evidenced by different proportion of individual myofiber types and differences in their hypertrophic potential.
