Forty-six Simmental × British Friesian bull calves were allocated to six treatment groups. In four groups (each of eight animals) half the animals were given a prime injection of gonadotropin-hormone-releasing-hormone (GnRH) either as the decapeptide or as an octapeptide (residues 3 to 10) conjugated to egg albumen. Prime injection times were at 3, 4, 5 or 6 months of age. All animals were boosted with a GnRH conjugate, similar to that used for the prime injection, at 8 months. At 8 months, six other animals were surgically castrated while the remaining eight were left as untreated bull controls. Weight gain and consumption of a barley-based diet offered ad libitum were recorded for individual animals. Blood samples were taken at a minimum of fortnightly intervals and the serum analysed for antibody titre against GnRH, testosterone and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). Animals were slaughtered at 12 months and chemical analyses performed on the dissectible material of the 10th rib for protein, lipid, ash and water content. Greater antibody titres and a longer period of low serum testosterone were achieved with the octapeptide conjugate compared with the decapeptide. Serum IGF-1 slowly decreased following both surgical- and effective immuno-castration. There were no significant differences in food intake between the groups. Both steers and the more responsive immunocastrates had higher fat (P < 0·01), lower protein (P < 0·05) and water concentrations (P < 0·01) in tissues from a rib sample joint compared with untreated bulls. As immuno-responsiveness decreased there were indications of compensatory changes in body composition. The technique may be applicable during periods of, for example, mixed grazing for bulls.

The transport of protein across the small intestine of the newborn pig was measured in vitro. The transport of both bovine immune globulin and bovine plasma albumin showed a large variation between piglets. The polycations poly-ornithine, poly-arginine and poly-lysine stimulated both the transport of globulin and albumin. Protamine, histone and arginine were without effect on protein transport. Poly-ornithine became bound to albumin and to the piglet intestinal mucosa. The amount of poly-ornithine needed to stimulate albumin transport was of the same order as that needed to change the electrophoretic mobility of brush border membranes and some 30 times less than that needed to change the charge on the protein. It is concluded that polycations stimulate protein transport by a direct action on the brush border membrane of the pig intestinal mucosa.

Ovulation rate (OR) and litter size (LS) were recorded in a flock of Cambridge sheep from 1984 to 1994 and from 1976 to 1994 respectively. There were 1516 and 2480 OR and LS records with means of 3·2 and 2·5 respectively. There was considerable variation in results between years ranging from 2·2 to 3·2 for LS and from 2·8 to 4·2 for OR. Ewe lamb OR was affected by year of recording, some years having higher OR than others. Rearing type (single, twin or triplet) also affected ewe lamb OR, twins having lower OR than both singles and triplets. Ewe lamb OR decreased with later date of birth reflecting a lower age at OR counting. Ewe lamb LS was affected by year of recording and there was also an interaction between date of birth and year indicating that OR decreased with later date of birth in some years but not in others. OR of adult ewes was affected by year of recording which also interacted with age (2, 3 and 4). Generally, OR increased with age but this trend was not observed in all years. LS of adult ewes was significantly affected by year and increased with ewe age (2, 3 and 4). Heritability and repeatability were determined for ewe lamb OR and LS and adult ewe OR and LS in univariate and two-trait analyses using DFREML. Heritabilities of ewe lamb OR (0·18 to 0·21) and LS (0·05 to 0·08) were lower than corresponding adult ewe values for OR (0·19 to 0·34) and LS (0·19 to 0·22). Ewe OR had a lower repeatability (0·43 to 0·55) than LS (0·30 to 0·80). High genetic correlations (>0·9) were obtained for combinations of ewe lamb OR, ewe lamb LS, adult ewe OR and adult ewe LS. The importance of analysing ewe lamb and ewe records separately is discussed as is the value of ewe lamb OR as a selection criterion.

The first three essential amino acids (EAA) for broilers including methionine (Met), lysine (Lys) and threonine (Thr) may greatly influence the growth of chick muscles at early stages of life. In order to survey the potential effects of those EAA on growth muscles, a rotatable three-variable central composite design (CCD) was conducted to track the interrelationships of dietary digestible Met (dMet), Lys (dLys) and Thr (dThr) for optimization of processing yields in broiler chicks using response surface methodology. A total of 60 floor pens of six birds each were assigned to 15 dietary treatments based on CCD containing five levels of dMet (0.416% to 0.584% of diet), dLys (0.881% to 1.319% of diet) and dThr (0.532% to 0.868% of diet) from 3 to 16 days of age. Experimental treatments significantly affected breast mass (BM) and leg mass (LM) of the birds (P<0.05) in which the main effect of dLys on BM was threefold higher than the main effect of dThr, and interaction effect between dMet and dLys was observed on BM (P<0.05). However, in the case of LM, the main effect of dThr was higher than the main effects of dMet and dLys and highest interaction effect exist between dThr and dMet (P<0.05). The second-order models for BM and LM were fitted by least squares regression. Canonical analysis revealed that the stationary points for carcass components were saddle points, thus ridge analysis was performed for getting optimal values of each EAA. Ridge analyses of BM and LM models showed that the maximum BM point may be obtained with 0.58%, 1.05% and 0.76% of dMet, dLys and dThr, respectively, in diet, and maximum LM point may be achieved with 0.58%, 1.09% and 0.70% of dMet, dLys and dThr, respectively, in diet. The resultant ideal ratios of dMet and dThr to dLys were 55% and 72% for BM; 53% and 64% for LM. Moreover, sensitivity analysis showed that the most important amino acids in BM and LM models were Lys and Thr, respectively. In conclusion, providing these three amino acid for BM optimization may warrant LM optimization and higher ideal ratios of dMet and dThr for breast muscle may indicate the higher importance of these EAA in this muscle than those in thigh muscle.

Sheep rearing on mountain pastures is an ancestral tradition in northwestern Slovenia. The indigenous Bovec sheep are widespread there and are well adapted to the rough Alpine rearing conditions. Every year, after weaning, the sheep start grazing in the lowlands (L) and then gradually move to mountain pastures, and finally, to the highland (H) pastures of the Alps. Grazing positively affects the fatty acid (FA) composition in sheep milk fat with increased availability of polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) in grass, and subsequently, in milk. Consequently, the objective of this work was to study the FA profile in sheep milk during grazing in four geographical areas in the Alps. A total of 15 ewes of the Bovec sheep breed were randomly selected and milk samples from these ewes were taken at four different pasture locations that differed with regard to altitude: the L pasture location at an altitude of 480 m, the mountain pastures (M1 and M2) at altitudes of 1100 to 1300 m and 1600 to 1900 m, respectively, and the H pastures at altitudes of 2100 to 2200 m. Milk samples from the ewes were taken during the grazing season from April to September. The chemical and FA composition of the milk samples from each pasture location were determined. There were significant differences in the concentrations of FA among the L, M1, M2 and H milk samples. We observed decreases of the concentrations of saturated FA (SFA) in milk from L to H pastures. The concentration of α-linolenic FA, monounsaturated FA (MUFA), PUFA and n-3 PUFA in milk were increased significantly with pasture altitude. The n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio was reduced by the change of pasture altitude with the lowest value at the M1 pasture (1.5). The concentrations of total SFA decreased significantly and was lowest at the L pasture. Our results underline the importance of the effect of grazing in the Alpine region associated with pasture altitude on the FA profile of sheep milk. The first variation in FA concentration in sheep milk occurred between L and M1, although it was more evident on H pastures in the Alpine mountains. Changes of the FA profile in sheep milk due to pasture altitude were related to variation in FA concentration in the pasture and the botanical composition of the pasture location.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of the length of the interval between implantation with melatonin and ram introduction on mating patterns, and to investigate the effects of melatonin on ovulation rate and litter size in Mule ewes.

Increasing the interval from treatment to ram introduction from 4 to 6 weeks was associated with a progressive and significant reduction in the time from ram introduction to mating as well as a reduction in the spread of mating across the group.

Melatonin resulted in a significant and consistent increase in ovulation rate at first oestrus (+0·44 to +0·48 ovulations per ewe) across the three treated groups, although the increase in litter size (+0·19 to +0·36) was more variable.

It is concluded that melatonin influences the pattern of mating and increases litter size in ewes and that the increase in litter size is accounted for by an induced increase in ovulation rate.

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between pedigree index for kg fat plus protein and the financial margins between milk returns and food, health and reproduction costs in individual lactations. Records of milk and milk component production, food intake, health and reproduction were obtained for individual Holstein-Friesian cows over 38 weeks of lactation over a 7-year period, at the University of Edinburgh/Scottish Agricultural College Langhill dairy cattle research centre. Records for a total of 302 lactations were collected. Milk prices, input costs and margins were calculated for individual animals, using 1989/90 values. Regressions of margin over food costs (MF) and margin over food, health and reproduction costs (MFHR) on pedigree index (PI) for kg fat plus protein were all positive and ranged from £2·50± 3·00 per kg PI for MFHR for heifers, to £6·50 ± 2·10 per kg PI for MFHR for all animals. The lower regression for heifers was attributed to higher reproduction costs in animals of higher genetic merit, though the standard error for the regression estimated in this smaller data set was high. Sensitivity analyses showed that the regression coefficients remained very similar, even with ±50% changes in food, health or reproduction costs. It was concluded that selection on PI for kg fat plus protein is likely to lead to increased margin over food, health and reproduction costs.

The proportions of abdominal fat and total body lipid and protein were measured up to 30 weeks in males and 21 weeks in females from lines of lean and fat broiler chickens given diets of different protein content. There was a constant relationship between the proportions of abdominal fat and body lipid independent of line, diet or age. Data on males showed effects of line and diet on body fatness at all ages up to 30 weeks. In females, line and diet had effects on body fatness during early growth but little effect on composition at 21 weeks. Plasma very low density lipoprotein concentration was higher in the fat line in both sexes at all ages. Egg production over the first few weeks of the laying period was much higher in lean line hens.

This study explored how farmers’ motivation in terms of use values and/or non-use values to work with farm animal welfare are associated with the economic outcome for the farm. Use values in farm animal welfare refer to economic value derived from productivity and profitability considerations. Non-use values in farm animal welfare refer to economic value derived from good animal welfare, irrespective of the use the farmer derives from the animal, currently or in the future. The analysis was based on detailed information about the income statements of a sample of Swedish dairy farmers, obtained from the Swedish Farm Economic Survey, complemented with survey information about their perceived use and non-use values in farm animal welfare. The findings suggest that farm economic outcome is significantly associated with motivation in terms of use values, but not so much with motivation in terms of non-use values. This is interesting from a policy point of view, because it indicates that farmers with different approaches to farm animal welfare may experience different economic outcomes for their farms. Findings can, for instance, be used to strengthen farmers’ engagement in various private quality assurance standards, which generally focus on values of non-use type, by pointing to that realisation of such values will not impair the economic outcome of the farms. Moreover, findings also suggest that farmers’ economic incentives for engagement in such standards may need to be further strengthened in order to become more attractive, as findings point to that a focus on non-use values generally is not associated with more favourable economic outcomes.

β-Adrenergic agonists (β-AA) are non-hormonal growth promoters which promote muscle hypertrophy in supplemented animals. The effects of two β-AA in combination with the immunocastration technique on the performance and carcass traits were evaluated using 96 feedlot Nellore males in a randomized complete block design with two sex conditions (immunocastrated (IC) v. non-castrated (NC)) and three treatments: CON (no β-agonists added), RH (300 mg of ractopamine hydrochloride/day, for 33 days) or ZH (80 mg of zilpaterol·hydrochloride animal/day for 30 days, removed 3 days for required withdrawal period). The trial was carried for 100 days where in the first 70 days animals did not receive β-AA (phase 1) and during the last 30 days they were treated with β-AA (phase 2). The performance and ultrasound measurements of longissimus muscle area (LMA), backfat thickness (BFT) and rump fat thickness (RFT) were evaluated in both phases. No sex condition v. treatment interactions were observed for any trait. The NC animals had higher average daily gain (ADG) and final BW than the IC animals, but they did not differ in dry matter intake (DMI) and feed efficiency (gain to feed). The NC animals showed greater LMA (P=0.0001) and hot carcass weight (P=0.0006), and smaller BFT (P=0.0007), RFT (P=0.0039) and percentage of kidney, pelvic and heart fat (P<0.0001) when compared with IC animals. The animals fed ZH showed greater ADG (P=0.0002), G : F (P<0.0001) and dressing per cent (P=0.0136) than those fed RH and CON diets. No differences in BW and DMI were observed. A interaction between treatment and time on feed was observed for LMA and BFT, in which the animals fed ZH diet showed greater LMA (P<0.01) and lower BFT (P<0.01) at 100 days than the animals fed RH and CON diets, whereas RH and CON diets did not differ. Immunocastration decreases muscle development and increases carcass finishing. In contrast, β-AA increases muscle and decreases fat deposition. The ZH has a higher action on the muscle metabolism than animals fed RH diet. However, RH diet achieves a better balance because it has an intermediary performance between non-supplemented and ZH animals and does not decrease the carcass fat.

Feed ingredients used in swine diets are often processed to improve nutritional value. However, (over-)processing may result in chemical reactions with amino acids (AAs) that decrease their ileal digestibility. This study aimed to determine effects of (over-)processing of soybean meal (SBM) and rapeseed meal (RSM) on post-absorptive utilization of ileal digestible AAs for retention and on body AA composition of growing pigs. Soybean meal and RSM were processed by secondary toasting in the presence of lignosulfonate to obtain processed soybean meal (pSBM) and processed rapeseed meal (pRSM). Four diets contained SBM, pSBM, RSM or pRSM as sole protein source. Two additional diets contained pSBM or pRSM and were supplemented with crystalline AA to similar standardized ileal digestible (SID) AA level as the SBM or RSM diet. These diets were used to verify that processing affected AA retention by affecting ileal AA digestibility rather than post-absorptive AA utilization. The SID AA levels of the protein sources were determined in a previous study. In total, 59 pigs were used (initial BW of 15.6±0.7 kg) of which five were used to determine initial body composition at the start of the experiment. In total, 54 pigs were fed one of six experimental diets and were slaughtered at a BW of 40 kg. The organ fraction (i.e. empty organs plus blood) and carcass were analyzed separately for N and AA content. Post-absorptive AA utilization was calculated from AA retention and SID AA intake. An interaction between diet type, comprising effects of processing and supplementing crystalline AA, and protein source was observed for CP content in the organ fraction, carcass and empty body and for nutrient retention. Processing reduced CP content and nutrient retention more for SBM than for RSM. Moreover, processing reduced (P<0.001) the lysine content in the organ fraction for both protein sources. Supplementing crystalline AA ameliorated the effect of processing on these variables. Thus, the data indicated that processing affected retention by reducing digestibility. Correcting AA retention for SID AA intake was, therefore, expected to result in similar post-absorptive AA utilization which was observed for the RSM diets. However, post-absorptive AA utilization was lower for the pSBM diet than for the SBM diet which might be related to an imbalanced post-absorptive AA supply. In conclusion, processing negatively affected nutrient retention for both protein sources and post-absorptive utilization of SID AA for retention for SBM. Effects of processing were compensated by supplementing crystalline AA.

Data from 27 feeding trials conducted on growing pigs from different research institutes across India were subjected to mixed model regression analysis to derive requirements of digestible energy (DE), crude protein (CP) and essential amino acids for maintenance and body weight gains. The ranges of maintenance requirements were determined to be: DE 516 to 702 kJ/kg M0.75, CP 6.98 to 11.62, lysine 0.431 to 0.664, methionine 0.265 to 0.458, methionine + cystine 0.327 to 0.466, cystine 0.055 to 0.184, threonine 0.205 to 0.511, arginine 0.377 to 1.21, isoleucine 0.241 to 0.775, leucine 0.604 to 1.54, phenylalanine + tyrosine 0.496 to 1.33, tryptophan 0.078 to 0.213, and valine 0.330 to 0.892 g/kg M0.75, respectively for different body weight ranges. The corresponding requirements for 1 g gain in body weight were: DE 28.6 to 38.6 kJ, CP 0.27 to 0.44 g, lysine 0.0071 to 0.0126 g, methionine 0.0047 to 0.0133 g, methionine + cystine 0.0151 to 0.0261 g, cystine 0.0043 to 0.0094 g, threonine 0.0052 to 0.0165 g, arginine 0.0045 to 0.0301 g, isoleucine 0.0023 to 0.0198 g, leucine 0.0150 to 0.0447 g, phenylalanine + tyrosine 0.0091 to 0.0382 g, tryptophan 0.0005 to 0.0044 g, and valine 0.0061 to 0.0222 g. Regression equations had high R2 values (ranging from 0.50 to 0.99 for different estimates), low coefficients of variation, low variance of error estimates and the coefficients were highly significant (P < 0.001). Regressed values were used to develop feeding standards. As the new standards derived in the present study are based on a thorough analysis of a larger database than previous Indian standards, the new feeding standard seems to be more appropriate for India and other tropical countries.

A minimally invasive biopsy technique was evaluated for udder tissue collection in dairy cows with Escherichia coli mastitis. Meanwhile, the effect of taking repeated liver and udder biopsies on the systemic and local acute phase response (APR) of the dairy cows was investigated during the disease. The cows were divided into a biopsy group (B) (n = 16) and a no-biopsy group (NB) (n = 16) and were sampled in the acute disease stage and in the recovery stage. The cows’ pre-disease period served as a control period for establishing baseline values for the investigated parameters. A total of 32 Holstein-Friesian cows were inoculated with 20 to 40 colony-forming units (cfu) of E. coli in one front quarter at 0 hour. Liver biopsies were collected at −144, 12, 24 and 192 h, and udder biopsies were collected at 24 and 192 h post E. coli inoculation (PI) using a minimally invasive biopsy technique. Effects of combined biopsying were investigated by recording production traits, clinical response, and measuring inflammatory milk and blood parameters: E. coli, somatic cell count, milk amyloid A (MAA) levels, white blood cell count, polymorphonuclear neutrophilic leukocyte numbers and serum amyloid A levels at several time points. E. coli inoculation changed all production parameters and the clinical and inflammatory response in all cows except one that was not infected. Combined biopsying had no constant or transient effect on the daily feed intake, the clinical responsiveness or the blood parameters, but affected the daily milk yield and some milk parameters transiently, that is, the presence of blood in milk, increased E. coli counts and MAA levels during the acute disease stage. Combined biopsying had no effect on the parameters in the recovery stage apart from the presence of blood in the milk. In conclusion, although, a minimally invasive biopsy technique was used, tissue damages could not be avoided when biopsying and they transiently affected the inflammatory parameters in the mammary gland. Nevertheless, we believe combined biopsying of liver and udder is as an acceptable approach to study the systemic and local APR in dairy cows during E. coli mastitis, if the timing of biopsying and other types of sampling is planned accordingly.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of two dietary supplements (monensin and a live yeast culture) on acid-base balance in steers maintained in a commercial feedlot system, considering effects over the finishing productive cycle. Steers (no. =42) were allotted randomly to one of the three study groups: (1) control group (no supplementation, C), (2) monensin supplementation (MON), and (3) live Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain 47 supplementation (SACC). Venous blood samples were collected for the measurement of acid-base parameters and l-lactate. Production parameters were also used as a complementary tool for understanding the internal changes associated with supplementation. During the finishing period, MON steers tended to gain more efficiently than C and SACC steers. In the C group, the finishing-period diet caused a progressive decline in blood bases, in line with the high-grain diet consumption. In contrast, supplemented animals did not show this trend, although lower HCO3− and base excess values were registered in SACC steers than in MON, indicating that ionophore supplementation is less effective for reducing blood base consumption than yeast supplementation. In our study, the lack of the expected response to yeast supplementation may be attributable to the high crude protein content of the ration, a common feature of commercial feedlot industries.

Live-weight gain responses were investigated using 36 individually penned lambs (mean live weight 35·2 kg) given three sodium hydroxide treated straw-based diets: low-protein, low-rapeseed meal (control) diet; high protein, high-rapeseed meal (HR) diet; or high-protein, fish meal (FM) diet. The diets were formulated to provide 3 or 9 g undegradable nitrogen per kg dry matter (DM) respectively for the diets without or with fish meal. Diets were offered once a day in a 50: 50 forage-to-concentrate ratio in amounts calculated to support maintenance plus 150 g gain and were adjusted weekly according to live weight. Live-weight gain, measured for 7 weeks, was improved by the FM diet only (P < 0·05).

The three diets were given also to rumen-fistulated sheep. The FM diet maintained higher rumen ammonia concentrations during most of the day. The FM and HR diets reduced rumen solid particle outflow rate (P < 0·05) and increased the effective degradability of DM and acid-detergent fibre.

Three trials have been made with growing pigs to measure the digestibility of four samples of wheat offal. Two samples were measured at the levels of 0, 20, 40 and 60% of the diet and two samples were measured at the levels of 0 and 60% of the diet. The offal replaced equal quantities of glucose in the diets and no attempt was made to equalize nutrient levels between diets.

Apparent digestibility coefficients of the diets declined with increasing dietary wheat offal content, but the digestibility of wheat offal did not change with level of inclusion. No differences in digestibility occurred between offals from hard and soft wheats, apart from a low N digestibility in one sample of soft wheat offal. The average digestible energy and TDN contents were 2810 kcal/kg and 63·1 for samples of offal containing 12·5% moisture.

The effects of early life events on average daily weight gain from birth to day 21 (ADG) of suckling pigs kept at different room temperatures (15°C, 20°C and 25°C) from birth to weaning were investigated. Data were collected from litters born by 61 sows in a loose housing system. The ADG for piglets with low birth weight (estimated for birth weights below the 10% percentile) was estimated to be 20 to 30 g higher per day at room temperature 20°C to 25°C compared with 15°C. In contrast, the ADG during the lactation period decreased for larger piglets (estimated for birth weights above the 10% percentile) by 28 g/day at room temperature 25°C compared with 15°C. Thus, high ambient temperatures (20°C to 25°C) are favourable for the growth in smaller piglets during lactation. Neither latency to first suckle nor birth-induced hypoxia, measured as concentration of umbilical cord lactate, affected the growth rate of the piglets. Lowest rectal temperature during the first 24 h after birth had a long-term negative effect on ADG (P<0.05), so that piglets with a lowest rectal temperature of 32.8°C (10% percentile) had an ADG which was on average 19 g lower per day than piglets with a rectal temperature of 37.3°C (90% percentile). Our results showed that hypothermia at birth, low birth weight and high number of suckling piglets lead to reduced ADG during the suckling period. The results suggest that keeping the room temperature at 20°C during lactation to some extent could compensate for the otherwise negative effects of low birth weight on ADG in piglets without decreasing the ADG of high birth weight piglets. However, to avoid hypothermia in the smallest piglets it may be beneficial to increase the room temperature above 20°C during the farrowing period of loose housed sows.

The effects of three levels of crude protein in the diet, 10, 12 and 14 %, on the performance of entire Israeli Friesian male cattle (bulls) during fattening, was studied in two experiments.

The bulls were 5 months old and 200 kg live weight, and 7·5 months and 250 kg, at the start of Experiments 1 and 2, respectively, and were slaughtered after 178 to 268 days (Experiment 1) or 156 to 166 days (Experiment 2) on trial, at a live weight of 430 to 480 kg.

In Experiment 1 mixed diets of two metabolizable energy concentrations (11·1 and 10·5 MJ metabolizable energy/kg dry matter) were used, each containing concentrates with 10, 12 or 14% crude protein content. In half of the treatments the crude protein content of the concentrate was increased by two percentage units for the first 61 days of the experiment. Daily live-weight gain was significantly higher at 14% and 16% crude protein than at 10% and 12% crude protein during the first 61 days for animals on the high energy diet, but liveweight gain was not affected by crude protein content on the low energy diet over this period, or at either energy concentration from 62 days to slaughter.

In Experiment 2 the diet consisted of concentrate, wheat straw and cotton hulls, giving a metabolizable energy concentration of approximately 10·55 MJ/kg dry matter. Daily live-weight gain did not differ significantly between concentrates containing 10, 12 or 14% crude protein, but carcass weight gain was higher at 12% and 14% crude protein than at 10% crude protein.

It is concluded that in order to ensure the best performance of bulls of the Israeli Friesian breed, diets with a high concentration of energy should contain 14% crude protein when fed to animals with a body weight of 200 to 300 kg, and 12% crude protein for heavier animals.

The need for the improvement of carcass quality in bacon pigs is generally accepted; the means whereby this improvement may be brought about is open to argument. Many experiments, particularly in Great Britain those of McMeekan (1940-41) and Mansfield, Trehane and Peacock (1937), have shown that carcass quality may be improved by the restriction of food intake during the later stages of fattening. However, Lucas and Calder (1956) conclude, from a comprehensive survey of published feeding experiments and their own results, that only small improvements in fat measurements and body length can be achieved by restricted feeding unless the age at slaughter is delayed by periods which are unacceptable to the farmer.

1. The effect of A.I. on the structure of the pedigree British Friesian breed has been assessed from analyses of pedigrees of systematic samples of 221 registered females and 200 registered males born in 1960. Samples of 200 registered females and 200 registered males born in alternate years from 1946 to 1958 inclusive were used to estimate the trend in the proportion sired by A.I. bulls.

2. By 1960, A.I. had not affected the hierarchical structure of the breed and had not, therefore, narrowed its base. Current inbreeding was lower in artificially than in naturally sired stock but there was little difference between the two groups in the level of non-current inbreeding.

3. Over 50% of artificially sired stock were sired by bulls likely to have progeny test information. Of the naturally sired stock, only 17% of females and 29% of males were sired by such bulls.

4. 12·2% of genes of registered females born in 1960 derived from the 1950 importation from the Netherlands. At comparable points in time the contributions of earlier importations from the Netherlands were: 1914–39·9%; 1936–24·3%. The increased size of the pedigree breed and the development of progeny testing methods giving an earlier and more accurate assessment of the breeding worth of individual sires, probably contributed to the relatively small influence of the 1950 importation.
