1. Thirty-six Large White fattening pigs, eight to nine weeks old at the beginning of the trial, were used to study the effects of cubing pig rations.

2. There were three treatments, meal, cubes and cubes reground to meal.

3. Pigs fed on cubes had significantly higher growth rates (by 0·09 ± 0·03 lb. per day or 7·1%) than those fed on meal.

4. Food conversion was significantly lower, by 0·18 ± 0·05 lb. feed per pound gain, for cube-fed pigs. The saving in feed was 5·1% for the complete fattening period, this difference being statistically significant (P < 0·001).

5. No significant differences between treatments were recorded for any of the carcass measurements.

6. Meal-fed pigs had significantly lower dressing-out percentages than those fed cubes.

7. There were no significant differences in performance between pigs fed on cubes and ground cubes.

The objective of the study was to estimate genetic trends from 1977 to 1998 in the French Large White (LW) breed for stillbirth and associated traits measured at farrowing using frozen semen. Two groups of pigs (G77 and G98) were obtained by inseminating LW sows with semen from LW boars born either in 1977 or in 1998. A second generation was produced by inter se mating in each group. Farrowing was thoroughly supervised through both direct observations and video recording all long farrowing on a total of 137 first- and second-parity litters produced by sows from this second generation (68 G77 and 69 G98 litters, respectively). Measurements included birth time, weight and birth characteristics (including orientation, presence of cyanosis or oedema, membrane obstruction, umbilical cord length/content) of each piglet, as well as sow traits (weight and backfat thickness, farrowing duration, litter size and within-litter variation of weights at birth). The data were analysed using linear or generalised linear mixed models, according to the definition of the trait (continuous or binary data). The importance of several effects to piglet probability of stillbirth was then quantified by computing the reduction of variance associated with the addition of each effect in the model. Litter size did not significantly differ in first parity, but was higher in G98 second-parity sows: the differences for global (including pre partum dead piglets) and total numbers of piglets born per litter were +2.3 ± 1.1 and +1.3 ± 0.6, respectively. G98 sows also had a higher number of stillbirths in both parities (+0.7 ± 0.3 stillborn per litter). Piglets from G98 litters were heavier at birth (+130 ± 40 g for birth weight adjusted for litter size), without any increase in within-litter heterogeneity of birth weight. No significant difference was detected between G77 and G88 groups for farrowing length and the distribution of time interval between piglet births. G98 stillborn piglets had longer and more often empty umbilical cords at birth. G98 piglets born alive also had more often umbilical nodes than G77 piglets. These characteristics were considered as indicators of increased farrowing difficulties and risk of hypoxia at birth in G98 pigs. Time of birth of each piglet, sow fatness at farrowing and time of first placenta expulsion were the main factors of variation of the piglet’s probability of stillbirth.

To unravel the underlying mechanisms that explain the positive effects of prefermented cereals on in vivo gastrointestinal (GI) architecture and function, an in vitro experiment using a human small intestinal epithelial cell model (Caco-2) was performed. A range of dilutions (0% to 10%) of the supernatants of three liquid experimental diets, as well as Na-lactate were used in an in vitro experiment to assess their effect on cellular growth, metabolism, differentiation and mucosal integrity using Caco-2. The experimental diets contained, in addition to a protein rich basal diet (60%), (1) a liquid control diet (C) containing 40% of a mixture of barley and wheat (ratio 3 : 1) or (2) a liquid diet (F) containing 40% prefermented barley and wheat or (3) C with the addition of the fermentation end-products (organic acids and ethanol) in concentrations similar to those in the fermented diet (FP). For F, the mixture of barley and wheat was fermented at 35°C for 48 h. Parallel to the in vitro experiment, 18 groups of eight weanling pigs were assigned to one of the experimental diets during a 14-day in vivo experiment. Each group was fed restrictively. The results of the in vitro experiment showed that the lowest dose of both F- and FP-supernatants had no clear effects on the cell proliferation, but incubation with 5% and 10% of the F- and FP-supernatants decreased the cell numbers at day 19. DNA, RNA, protein and glycoprotein synthesis in differentiated Caco-2 cells were stimulated by incubation with the lower concentrations (0.5% to 2.5%) of F- and FP-supernatants whereas the higher concentrations (5% and 10%) had no effect. Both the F- and FP-supernatants decreased the specific sucrase–isomaltase activity in a dose-dependent manner, but the effects on the specific aminopeptidase activities were less clear. Mucosal integrity initially decreased after incubation with the highest F- and FP-supernatants and started to recover between 24 and 48 h. The results of the in vivo experiment showed no dietary effects (P > 0.1) on GI morphology and brush-border enzyme activities at day 5 or at day 14. Time related changes in GI characteristics followed a normal pattern. In conclusion, the supernatants of diets containing either prefermented cereals or their fermentation end-products clearly modulate cellular growth, metabolism, differentiation and mucosal integrity in an in vitro model, although these effects were not observed in the in vivo characteristics measured in weanling pigs.

Two groups of 24 Landrace × Large White gilts were allocated at puberty to two feeding regimes during oestrus. The control group received 1·8 kg food/day throughout the oestrus period, while the flushed group had an additional 1·8 kg immediately after mating on the first day of oestrus. The treatments were imposed at the first post-puberal heat (second heat) and at the post-weaning oestrus in the second and third parities. The sows remained on the same treatment throughout the experiment. Litter performance was measured in the first two parities. The sows were slaughtered on day 25 of their third gestation to provide data on ovulation rate and embryo mortality. Increasing feed intake to 3·6 kg on the day of mating did not significantly affect the number of piglets born, number born live, or mean piglet weight, in either the first or second parity. In the third parity, ovulation rate, embryo number at 25 days of gestation and embryo mortality were unaffected by treatment.

In mice, the myostatin (Mstn) null mutation and treatment with clenbuterol both increase muscle growth and decrease fat mass. Our objective was to determine whether mechanistic overlap exists by administering clenbuterol to Mstn null mice. Male Mstn null and wild-type mice of similar genetic backgrounds received either 0 (control) or 20 p.p.m. clenbuterol in tap water free choice for 14 days. Several traits were measured to estimate muscle and fat growth. The Mstn null mutation resulted in increased body and empty carcass weight, increased muscle weights and decreased fat pad weights. Fat content was reduced and protein content was increased in the empty carcasses of Mstn null mice. Similarly, treatment with clenbuterol resulted in increased body and empty carcass weight, increased muscle weights and reduced fat pad weights. Fat content of empty carcasses and viscera was reduced and protein content of empty carcasses was increased with clenbuterol treatment. A significant interaction of genotype and clenbuterol treatment would indicate an altered responsiveness of Mstn null mice to clenbuterol. However, only the weight of gastrocnemius muscles exhibited a significant (P = 0.01) interaction of genotype and clenbuterol treatment, indicating that Mstn null mice were less responsive to clenbuterol compared with wild-type mice. Thus, for all other traits, the impact of Mstn null mutation and clenbuterol treatment was completely additive. These data suggest that disruption of Mstn function does not alter the response of mice to β-adrenergic agonists.

We have previously demonstrated that a sharp rise in feed intake (hyperphagia) and spontaneous liver steatosis could be experimentally induced in domestic Greylag geese by combining a short photoperiod and a sequence of feed restriction followed by ad libitum corn feeding during the fall and the winter. In this previous work, however, individual feed intake could not be recorded. The present study aimed at evaluating the relationship between level and pattern of hyperphagia and liver weight with an individual control of feed intake in individually housed (IH) geese, while comparing the performances with group housed (GH) geese. A total of 300 male geese of 19 weeks of age, were provided with corn ad libitum after an initial feed restriction period. From 21 to 23 weeks of age, the daylight duration was progressively reduced from 10 to 7 h and kept as such until the end of the experiment (week 36). In all, 30 GH and 30 IH geese were slaughtered at 19, 27, 30, 32 and 36 weeks of age. Feed intake was measured per group in GH geese and individually in IH geese. During the 1st week of corn feeding, the average feed intake rose up to 600 g/goose per day in GH geese but not in IH geese where the feed intake rose gradually from 300 to 400 g/day. The liver weight increased from 93 g (week 19) to 497 g (week 32; P<0.05) in GH birds. In IH birds, liver weights were, on average, much lower (ranging from 220 to 268 g) than in GH birds (P<0.05). In GH and IH bird, the variability in the individual response to corn feeding was very high (liver weight cv ranging from 63% to 83% depending on slaughter age). A close correlation between corn consumption and liver weight was evidenced in IH birds at each slaughter age (R2 ranging from 0.62 to 0.79), except at 36 weeks of age where this correlation was weak (R2=0.14). The variability in the extent of liver steatosis is very high and our results in IH birds clearly point out the major role of hyperphagia, mainly at the beginning of the ad libitum corn feeding period, on the development of spontaneous liver steatosis.

Two experiments were conducted to compare the effects of single and double suckling on the performance of calves at pasture. In association with their own (status 1) calf, each double-suckled cow fostered a Friesian male (status 2) calf during the post-partum housing period. Calf live weights, milk intakes, and daylight grazing times and suckling activities were recorded.

Single-suckled calves were significantly heavier at weaning (221 and 209 kg) than either status 1 (185 and 170 kg) or status 2 (180 and 175 kg) double-suckled calves in experiments 1 and 2 respectively. Daily gains of the single- and status 1 and 2 double-suckled calves were 0·87, 0·69 and 0·61 kg/day in experiment 1, and 0·94, 0·72 and 0·70 kg/day in experiment 2. Single-suckled calves consumed significantly more milk per day during three 28- day periods at pasture than did either status 1 or status 2 double-suckled calves (7·9, 5·2 and 50kg/day, and 90, 7·2 and 6·5 kg/day in experiments 1 and 2). Status effects in the double-suckled calves were not significant for live weights, weight gains or milk intakes.

Double-suckled calves spent more time grazing and sucked their own or assigned foster dams less frequently than did single-suckled calves. Status 2 double-suckled calves spent more time grazing (experiment 1) and sucked for significantly shorter periods from more foreign dams than did their status 1 contemporaries.

It was concluded that double suckling increased annual total weight of calf output per cow but that it was achieved at the expense of individual calf growth performance. Reduced milk intake appeared to be a major factor in limiting live-weight gains in the double-suckled calves.

Two experiments were carried out to examine the effects of the timing and duration of mineral supplementation of the ewe's diet in the final 6 weeks of gestation on immunoglobulin G (IgG) absorption by their progeny. In experiment 1, 60 single-bearing ewes were allocated to one of four dietary treatments (no. = 15) and offered a basal diet of grass silage ad libitum, containing 50 g/kg molassed sugar-beet pulp, which was supplemented with concentrates for the final 7 weeks of pregnancy and were additionally provided with a daily mineral/vitamin supplement for the final 6 weeks (W-6), 4 weeks (W-4), 2 weeks (W-2) or no mineral/vitamin supplement, (control; W-0). The supplement contained Ca, P, Na, Mg, Mn, Zn, Se, Co, I and vitamin E and was offered at the daily rate of 48 g per ewe. The ewes were milked at 1, 10 and 18 h post partum and measured quantities of colostrum, proportional to birth weight were fed back to the progeny via a stomach tube. At each milking, colostrum yield was recorded and colostrum samples taken to determine the concentration and yield of IgG. Treatment had no effect (P > 0.05) on the yields of colostrum or IgG to 18 h post partum. The efficiency of IgG absorption was lower (P < 0.001) in the progeny of ewes who received supplementary minerals (W-6, 0.069, W-4, 0.078, W-2, 0.072, W-0, 0.261; s.e. 0.0244. P < 0.001) regardless of the duration of the mineral/vitamin supplementation period and this resulted in a reduced concentration of IgG in the lamb's serum. In experiment 2, 40 twin-bearing ewes were allocated to one of four dietary treatments (no. = 10) and offered a basal diet of grass silage ad libitum which was supplemented initially with 500 g of a concentrate containing 140 g crude protein (CP) per kg from day 98 to 133 of gestation and then replaced with 700 g/day of a concentrate containing 180 g/kg CP from day 134 of gestation until lambing, in addition to one of the following mineral/vitamin supplementation treatments : no supplementary minerals, W0 (control); 48 g of supplement per ewe per day in weeks 6 and 5 pre- partum (W6–5), or weeks 4 and 3 pre-partum (W4–3), or for the final 2 weeks pre-partum (W2–1). The ewes were milked and the lambs fed as in experiment 1. Again, treatment had no effect (P > 0.05) on the yields of colostrum or IgG to 18 h post partum. When ewes were offered the mineral/vitamin supplement in the final 2 weeks of gestation their progeny had a lower (P < 0.01) serum IgG concentration (4.6 g/l) than in the control treatment (14.0 g/l) or when the supplement was offered either in weeks 3 and 4 (11.3 g/l) or weeks 5 and 6 pre-partum (14.3 g/l). IgG absorption efficiency followed the same pattern as lamb serum IgG concentration. We conclude that supplementation of the ewe's diet at the level used in these studies for the final 2 weeks of pregnancy results in the production of offspring with a reduced ability to absorb colostral IgG. Furthermore, in order for this impairment of the IgG absorptive ability of the lamb to manifest itself the supplementation must occur for the final 2 weeks of gestation and supplementation for a 2-weekly period earlier in gestation will not elicit the same effect.

Nose-rings are often fitted to outdoor commercial pigs to inhibit rooting and reduce consequent pasture damage. During ethological observations of the behaviour of ringed pigs at pasture, subjective impressions suggested that pigs with nose-rings picked up their normal feed, in the form of large nuts (‘roll nuts’), more tentatively than unringed pigs. The observed pigs were gestating sows under one of three treatments: unringed controls (UR), multiple wire ‘clip-rings’ through the upper rim of the snout (CR), or rigid ‘bull-rings’ through the nasal septum (BR). For formal assessment of feeding efficiency eight randomly selected pigs from each condition were timed and video-recorded, in individual feeder stalls, as they ate 20 3-cm long roll-nuts laid out in a standard rectilinear array in a steel-sided tray under each of five conditions: on a hard surface, on the surface of soil, on the surface of turf, embedded in soil, or embedded in turf. All groups took longer to eat up their test meal from the plain surface than from the surfaces of either soil or turf and longer still when the nuts were embedded. In all conditions, ringed pigs took longer to eat their 20 nuts than did controls, with BR > CR > UR (overall mean times, pooling data from the different feeding conditions: 118·6, 69·9 and 56·7 s respectively: P < 0·001). The difference between groups was greatest when nuts were embedded. Also, when nuts were embedded, ringed pigs were more reluctant to root: the latency to their first rooting action was delayed (mean latency across both embedded’ conditions: 29·6, 87·9 and 106·8 s for UR, CR and BR pigs, respectively: P < 0·01 with soil and turf conditions combined) and, even after starting, a smaller proportion of the residual trial time was spent rooting (0·11, 0·27 and 0·62 of the total time by BR, CR and UR pigs respectively; P < 0·001). It is concluded that nose-ringing depresses the efficiency with which pigs feed on solid food, especially if they have to root for it. The threat to welfare inherent in this will be greatest when ringed pigs are in direct competition with unringed pigs.

1. Thirty-six Ayrshire and 48 Friesian male calves were used in two separate experiments to examine the effect of level and method of feeding milk substitute in two different housing environments. The calves were weaned when the daily intake of air-dry, milk substitute plus concentrates per head reached 1·59 kg, provided at least 0·45 kg of this intake was from concentrates.

2. The feeding systems affected the total consumption of milk substitute (P< 0·001) and created differences in live weight at weaning. The housing environments affected the age at weaning (P< 0·001) and the intake of milk substitute (P< 0·001).

3. The extra capital cost involved in a ‘controlled environment’ type of calf house does not appear to be justifiable in terms of calf health or performance when compared with the performance of calves in a ‘climatic’ house in the north-east of Scotland.

Correlations and regressions between estimated breeding values for 122 day part-lactation, 1st and 2nd lactation yield (part, 1st, 2nd) were estimated from 106 sire progeny groups, each with at least 60 effective daughters.

The genetic correlations between part, 1st and 2nd kg milk were 1·0 and 0·84 respectively, and the regressions of 1st on part and of 2nd on 1st test were 2·40 and 0·82 kg/kg milk, respectively. Selection by one standard deviation between sires on part-lactation tests would improve 1st lactation yields by an average of 204 kg milk with a standard deviation of 84 kg. Selection on 1st lactation yields by one standard deviation would increase 2nd lactation yields by an average of 183 kg milk with a standard deviation of 156 kg, indicating that some bulls so selected could have below average 2nd lactation yields.

Two sire selection models were simulated differing in the selection criterion; 1 st yield in model 1, and 1 st followed by 2nd yields in model 2. The contribution of proven sires to the rate of genetic improvement in lifetime production was greater from model 2 than from model 1 by about 15% without any additional costs for bull maintenance.

A model of a birthdate distribution for a herd of beef cows is constructed using the probability distributions of the variables that affect reproduction in the cow — anoestrous interval, oestrous cycle length, conception to each oestrus, gestation length, period of mating and the prior calving frequency distribution. The model is general and can be reparamaterized to deal with issues such as intervention to synchronize oestrous cycles among cows in the herd by changing the form of the relevant probability distributions.

The model is applied to the question of what time to begin mating in a herd of beef cows. The average calf live weight at day 200, herd conception rate and proportion of cows calving before the planned start of calving were calculated from the model output. The model parameters given by the anoestrous period, conception rate to each oestrus and the regression between prior calving date and anoestrous period, were varied in a factorial design to investigate a range of circumstances found on a farm. Prior calving distributions were generated by random sampling from eight actual calving frequency distributions.

Generally starling mating earlier produced an advantage in terms of extra calf live weight and herd conception rate. However, the proportion of the herd calving earlier than expected increased with early mating. Thus, the feasibility of early mating depends on the cost to the farmer of dealing with early calving cows as well as the advantage of heavier older calves.

Altering the fixed parameters in the model (variances and covariances, prior calving distributions, mating period) to accommodate the circumstances of herds run under different conditions may produce different results. Model structure allows easy alteration of these parameters and also the introduction of different probability distributions for some variables. This might be necessary to model oestrous synchronization and artificial insemination, issues not considered in this paper.

The welfare of early-weaned pigs in different housing systems was examined using a range of indicators. Three replicates of 20 pigs were weaned at 6·4 kg live weight into either: (a) deep-straw; (b) Straw-Flow®; (c) large flatdeck; (d) small flatdeck. A kenneled lying area was provided in (a) and (b). The floor in (c) and (d) was expanded metal. Stocking densities were 0·23 m2 per pig in (a), (b) and (c) and 0·17 m2 per pig in (d). After 4 to 5 weeks (19·6 kg live weight), 16 pigs from each pen were moved into Straw-Flow grower pens (0·68 m2 per pig) and observed until slaughter at 90·6 kg. The remaining pigs were grouped together to examine the effects of mixing. At weaning, 24·1% of pigs had foot injuries. Pigs with foot injuries recovered quickly on deep-straw but the injuries increased in flatdecks immediately after weaning (Straw-Flow was intermediate). Injuries were more persistent in the small flatdeck. Deep-straw prevented adventitious bursitis of the hock. After 1 month in the grower pens, there was no residual treatment effect. Antibody response was examined by immune challenge with keyhole limpet haemocyanin (KLH). Immunoglobulin (Ig) response was greater in straw pens. Pigs mixed at 20 kg showed a decreased immune response to KLH challenge. Growth and food intake showed no treatment effects; food conversion ratio was poorer in (c) than in (b) or (d).

The prospect that genes from the Chinese Meishan pig will be used to improve reproductive performance of European pigs requires that the Meishan is evaluated for traits of economic importance and the genetics of any breed effects investigated. Entire male and female pigs of four genotypes; purebred Meishan (MS) and Large White (LW) pigs and both reciprocal Fl crossbred genotypes (MS ♂ × LW ♀and LW ♂ × MS ♀), were fed ad libitum and slaughtered at about 70 kg. After slaughter, carcass weight, dimensions and conformation were recorded and fat depths at the shoulder, mid back and loin were measured on the carcass, together with fat depths and eye muscle dimensions recorded on a section cut at the last rib position. Drip loss, muscle reflectance and pH were measured and subjective assessments of fat firmness, fat separation, muscle marbling and muscle colour were made. Genotypic means and genetic crossbreeding effects (direct additive and heterosis effects and maternal additive effects) were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood procedures. When compared with the LW, MS carcasses had a similar killing-out proportion but were shorter with a poorer conformation. MS carcasses had substantially greater fat depths and reduced eye muscle dimensions in comparison with the LW. Differences between genotypes for fat depths and muscle dimensions were largely controlled by direct additive gene action, there was little evidence of direct heterosis and hence Fl crosses were intermediate between the purebreds. Significant genotype × sex interaction meant that genotypic differences for these traits were much greater in females than in males. Significant direct additive genetic differences between female genotypes were found for fat firmness, fat separation and drip loss, but these effects may in part have been a consequence of subcutaneous fat depth differences between genotypes. The degree of marbling was greater in MS females than in females of the other three genotypes and these genotypic differences did not seem to be associated with subcutaneous fat depth. Muscle from MS males was darker in colour with a lower reflectance than that from LW males. Genotype × sex interaction was such that genotypic differences for meat and fat quality traits differed between sexes.

Traumatic situations in animals induce responses including pain, expressed through behavioural and physiological pathways such as inflammation, oxidative stress, hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and autonomic nervous system. As some of these systems can also be activated during excitement and situations with a positive valence, their use as a means to assess pain response is difficult. We explored (i) how these five aforementioned pathways change in sheep exposed to various degrees of invasiveness of surgical procedures despite a therapeutic regimen and (ii) whether a multiparametric analysis that combines information from these five pathways enhances the discrimination between these situations, and estimates the relative importance of these pathways in the response. We used 24 adult sheep split into four treatments: Control (C; no fasting, no anaesthesia, no surgery), Sham (S; fasting, anaesthesia, no surgery), Rumen Canulation (R; fasting, anaesthesia, rumen cannulation) and Rumen–Duodenal–Ileum cannulation (RDI; fasting, anaesthesia, cannulation of the rumen, duodenum and ileum). Sheep’ responses were measured for 5 days after surgery. When considering each behavioural or physiological pathway independently, discrimination between treatments was acceptable, its sensitivity (Se) ranging from 0% to 100%, and its specificity (Sp) ranging from 62% to 100%. The multiparametric analysis gathering information from the five pathways enhanced the effectiveness of discrimination between treatments (Se, 50% to 100%; Sp, 82% to 100%), and gave additional information on the relative contribution of each pathway to the global sheep response. Sheep global response was higher when exposed to a surgery, and increased with the surgery invasiveness. This response relied mostly on inflammation (absolute correlation for haptoglobin, 0.89), HPA (cortisol, 0.85) and behaviour (antalgic postures, 0.85). The multiparametric approach seems to be a promising tool to discriminate between different degrees of invasiveness of surgical procedures.

Four experiments were conducted with lactating dairy cows offered a hay and concentrate diet (0·5:0·5) to investigate the effects of (1) the frequency of feeding a completely mixed diet (experiment 1) compared with feeding the concentrate fraction and the roughage fraction separately (experiment 2), and (2) the addition of sodium chloride to a completely mixed diet (experiment 3), on the fractional rate of outflow (FRO) of chromium (Cr)-treated fish meal from the rumen, and on milk yield and composition. The cows were offered the diet at either twice the maintenance requirement (experiments 1 and 2), or 2-5 x maintenance (experiment 3) in a 4 x 4 Latin-square design. The effect of the particle size of the Cr-treated soya bean meal was investigated in experiment 4.

The frequency of feeding of the completely mixed diet had no significant effect on the rate of outflow of Cr-treated fish meal from the rumen, or on milk yield or composition. FRO per h were 0·070, 0·085, 0·079 and 0·086 when the diet was offered once, twice, four times or 12 times per day respectively. Increasing the frequency of feeding of the concentrate fraction of the diet had no significant effect on FRO. FRO per h were 0·073, 0·078, 0·081 and 0·081 when the concentrate fraction was offered once, twice, four times or 12 times per day respectively.

The addition of NaCl to the diet significantly increased water intake (P < 0·001), but had no significant effects on FRO or milk yield. FRO per h were 0·074, 0·075, 0·076 and 0080 when 50, 265, 529 or 794 g of NaCl were added into the diet respectively. The respective intakes of water were 66·6, 74·1, 88·4 and 101·6 kg/day.

The FRO per h of fine particles of Cr-treated soya bean meal was 0·085 and for coarse particles, 0·096. The difference was not significant.

Three types of high glucosinolate British rapeseed meal (RSM) — extracted, expeller and extruded — were incorporated in ewe diets at 200 g/kg; soya-bean meal (SBM) at 165 g/kg replaced RSM in a control diet. Eighty housed Suffolk-Mule ewes were divided into four equal groups and given one of four diets, A (control SBM), B (extracted RSM), C (expeller RSM) or D (extruded RSM) for one reproductive cycle. Diets A and B were compared for a second season. The ewes were given a maximum of 2·5 kg diet per day during lactation. Barley straw was available ad libitum. The ewes were mated in November and December. Lambs were weaned at 42 days of age; they were given creep food similar in composition to their dams' lactation diets.

There were no dietary effects on ewes in overall health, live weight, oestrous activity, conception, number of lambs born alive or lamb birth weights. A mean of 1·6 lambs were weaned per ewe mated and 58% of these were twins, in year 1. In year 2, 1·8 lambs were reared and 79% were twins. The mean milk yield over the first 4 weeks of lactation was 3·2 1 and there were no significant dietary effects. Fat concentration in milk was very variable, but in general was slightly depressed by the RSM diets, significantly so at three sampling dates. Protein concentration was consistently lower in milk from RSM than SBM groups, significantly lower at four of the weekly samplings. Thiocyanate levels in plasma and milk were related to glucosinolate intake, but were not associated with any detrimental effects. At all sampling dates, values for RSM groups were significantly greater than for SBM ewes. Plasma thyroxine values were similar regardless of diet

A 2 × 2 factorial experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of cereal type (barley v. oat) and exogenous enzyme supplementation (with or without) on intestinal fermentation, and on indole and skatole levels in the intestinal content and the adipose tissue in finisher boars. The experimental treatments were as follows: (i) barley-based diet, (ii) barley-based diet with enzyme supplement, (iii) oat-based diet and (iv) oat-based diet with enzyme supplement. The enzyme supplement contained endo-1,3(4)-β-glucanase (EC 3.2.1.6) and endo-1,4-β-xylanase (EC 3.2.1.8). The animals were fed ad libitum for 45 days from 76.0 to 113.6 kg live weight. Feeding barley-based diets led to higher (P < 0.05) total volatile fatty acids concentrations in the large intestine. Proportions of propionic- and butyric-acids were higher and that of acetic acid lower in digesta from barley-based in comparison to oat-based diets (P < 0.001). Consequently, pH in the large intestine was higher after feeding oat-based in comparison to barley-based diets. Animals fed unsupplemented oat-based diet had higher (P < 0.01) indole concentrations in the digesta from the proximal colon than those fed barley-based diets. Feeding oat-based diets led to lower (P < 0.01) skatole and higher (P < 0.001) indole concentrations in the digesta from the terminal colon than barley-based diets. skatole concentrations in the adipose tissue did not differ (P > 0.05) between the experimental treatments. Pigs offered the barley-based diets had lower (P < 0.001) indole concentrations in the adipose tissue compared with those fed the oat-based diet. In conclusion, barley-based diets were more efficient than oat-based diets in limiting concentrations of indole in the adipose tissue.

Effects on animal health and productivity of offering diets composed wholly or partly of kale to Hereford × Friesian steers were examined in two growth trials and a digestibility trial. Rates of daily gain (kg), daily dry-matter intake (kg) and coefficients of dry-matter digestibility by 24 steers offered proportions of 0·50 or 0·75 kale with rolled barley or 100 kale were respectively 1·05, 7·5, 0·76; 0·72, 5·8, 0·72; and 0·48, 5·3, 0·70. Of 48 steers given 0·25 or 0·50 kale with rolled barley, fodderbeet or swede turnips, the food intakes and daily gains of those offered barley were greatest on the higher proportion of kale whereas with fodderbeet and turnips the food intakes and gains were higher (P<005 and P<0·01) respectively on the lower proportion of kale. Although daily intakes of S-methylcysteine sulphoxide were high, reaching 0·25 and 0·33 g per kg body weight in trials 1 and 2 respectively, and moderate changes in blood metabolism occurred, there were no cases of haemolytic anaemia. Steers given only kale produced the poorest daily live-weight gain and the results suggested that the inclusion of kale should be limited to 0·50 of the total diet.

Dried poultry manure, produced locally by sterilization and drying, was evaluated as an addition to a conventional diet, at levels of 10, 20 and 30%, for growing pigs from 23 to 85 kg live weight. The 32 pigs remained healthy and the dried manure had no apparent adverse effect on the carcasses.

There were significant linear relationships between the amount of manure added to the conventional diet and growth rate, feed conversion efficiency and certain carcass characteristics. For every 10% addition of manure, growth was reduced by 0·02 kg/day, feed conversion efficiency by 0·25 units and killing-out percentage by 0·96. The dried manure contained about 30% crude protein and was a rich source of minerals.
