Androstenone production increases during pubertal development and plays a major role in boar taint. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of a subclinical inflammation on the pubertal development of boars and hence on fat androstenone. Contrasted hygiene conditions were applied during rearing to increase the variability of the inflammatory status. Boars from a commercial cross line were allocated at 139±0.9 days of age (Day 0) and 81.3±5.9 kg of live weight either to Good (n=61) or Poor (n=54) hygiene conditions until slaughter at 172.9±4.8 days of age and 116.7±4.5 kg live weight. Inflammatory status, growth and pubertal development were evaluated on Day 0, Day 27 and at slaughter by analysing the blood formula, plasma inflammatory proteins; testosterone and oestradiol, salivary cortisol, rectal temperature, live weight, back fat thickness, weight of reproductive organs and clinical scores of organs (lungs, stomach, snout). Fat was collected on Day 27 by biopsy and at slaughter to measure androstenone concentration. A principal component analysis including inflammatory indicators followed by a clustering procedure was performed to identify pigs with a high (Infl+, n=50) or a low (Infl−, n=65) inflammatory status. Infl+ pigs had more granulocytes/ml, higher concentrations of haptoglobin, C-reative protein and cortisol (P<0.05), lower growth rate and higher lung pneumonia score. However, regardless of stage, the inflammatory status had no significant effect on plasma testosterone or oestradiol, fat androstenone or sexual organ development. Present data suggest that a mild inflammatory status has no influence on pubertal development or fat concentration of androstenone in boars.

Technological and mathematical advances have provided opportunities to investigate new approaches for the holistic quantification of complex biological systems. One objective of these approaches, including the multi-inverse deterministic approach proposed in this paper, is to deepen the understanding of biological systems through the structural development of a useful, best-fitted inverse mechanistic model. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the capacity of a deterministic approach, that is, the multi-inverse approach (MIA), to yield meaningful quantitative nutritional information. To this end, a case study addressing the effect of diet composition on sheep weight was performed using data from a previous experiment on saccharina (a sugarcane byproduct), and an inverse deterministic model (named Paracoa) was developed. The MIA successfully revealed an increase in the final weight of sheep with an increase in the percentage of corn in the diet. Although the soluble fraction also increased with increasing corn percentage, the effective nonsoluble degradation increased fourfold, indicating that the increased weight gain resulted from the nonsoluble substrate. A profile likelihood analysis showed that the potential best-fitted model had identifiable parameters, and that the parameter relationships were affected by the type of data, number of parameters and model structure. It is necessary to apply the MIA to larger and/or more complex datasets to obtain a clearer understanding of its potential.

Forty-eight culled dairy cows were assigned to one of two treatment groups to investigate the effect of a β-adrenergic agonist in mature cattle. They were finished during a 63-day period on a concentrate diet, containing 0 or 4 mg/kg cimaterol. No food was given in the 20 h prior to slaughter.

Cimaterol had no effect on food intake, but significantly improved food conversion efficiency and increased live-weight gain, carcass weight and dressing proportion (P < 0·05). Cimaterol induced muscle hypertrophy as evidenced by an improved EUROP carcass classification and a higher longissimus thoracis (LT) cross-sectional area (P < 0·001). EUROP fat score and fat content in the carcass and the LT were lowered (P < 0·05). Cimaterol resulted in brighter meat (higher L-value: 37·0 v. 35·6; P<0·05) with a higher shear force value (64·0 v. 46·4 Newton; P<0·01) compared with control animals. It seems likely that mature cattle receiving cimaterol respond similarly to younger growing animals.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the daily measured traits milk yield, water intake and dry matter intake with fixed and random regression models added with different error covariance structures. It was analysed whether these models deliver better model fitting in contrast to conventional fixed and random regression models. Furthermore, possible autocorrelation between repeated measures was investigated. The effect of model choice on statistical inference was also tested. Data recording was performed on the Futterkamp dairy research farm of the Chamber of Agriculture of Schleswig-Holstein. A dataset of about 21 000 observations from 178 Holstein cows was used. Average milk yield, water intake and dry matter intake were 34.9, 82.4 and 19.8 kg, respectively. Statistical analysis was performed using different linear mixed models. Lactation number, test day and the parameters to model the function of lactation day were included as fixed effects. Different structures were tested for the residuals; they were compared for their ability to fit the model using the likelihood ratio test, and Akaike’s and Bayesian’s information criteria. Different autocorrelation patterns were found. Adjacent repeated measures of daily milk yield were highest correlated (p1 = 0.32) in contrast to measures further apart, while for water intake and dry matter intake, the measurements with a lag of two units had the highest correlations with p2 = 0.11 and 0.12. The covariance structure of TOEPLITZ was most suitable to indicate the dependencies of the repeated measures for all traits. Generally, the most complex model, random regression with the additional covariance structure TOEPLITZ(4), provided the lowest information criteria. Furthermore, the model choice influenced the significance values of one fixed effect and therefore the general inference of the data analysis. Thus, the random regression + TOEPLITZ(4) model is recommended for use for the analysis of equally spaced datasets of milk yield, water intake and dry matter intake.

The optimum design of genetic controls is considered with respect to several factors, such as a fixed total expenditure, differing costs for males and females, different plans for retaining parents and choosing replacements, the value of keeping spares and the effects of mortality and infertility among individuals in the control.

The effects of mortality and infertility are important for these will tend to reduce the annual effective size and lower the optimum age for replacement of parents. Keeping individuals to a fixed age, without spares, will usually be preferable in practice to the lifetime retention of parents with spares, since spares will be at the expense of other breeding animals. It is shown that with the same total expenditure, the annual effective size of a control may be substantially increased by the appropriate choices among the various factors studied and methods are given for finding the optimum design.

The BW has been largely used as a selection criterion in genetic selection programmes; however, increases in BW can affect animal metabolism and metabolites. The knowledge of how genetic potential for growth affects the metabolites can give a footprint of growth metabolism. This research aimed to evaluate the effect of genetic potential for post-weaning growth (GG) on performance, carcass traits and serum metabolome of non-castrated Nellore males during the finishing phase. Forty-eight Nellore non-castrated males, with divergent potential for post-weaning growth, were selected and divided into two groups: high potential for post-weaning growth (HG; n = 24) and low potential for post-weaning growth (LG; n = 24). Animals were kept and fed for 90 days where performance and ultrasound carcass traits were evaluated. Blood samples were collected at the beginning and end of feeding period to analyse serum metabolites concentration. The hot carcass weight and dressing percentage were recorded at slaughter. The feedlot performance and carcass traits were not affected by genetic potential. The HG animals had a lower glucose (P = 0.039), glutamate (P = 0.038), glutamine (P = 0.004), greater betaine (P = 0.039) and pyruvate (P = 0.039) compared to the LG group at the beginning of feedlot. In addition, higher creatine phosphate concentrations were observed at the beginning of feeding period, compared to final, for both groups (P = 0.039). In conclusion, the genetic potential for post-weaning growth does not affect performance and carcass traits during the finishing period. Differences in metabolite concentrations can be better found at the beginning of feedlot, providing a footprint of growth metabolism, but similar metabolite concentration at the end of finishing period.

1. Bulls and steers of the Yugoslav Simmental breed (38 in total) were reared and fattened to 470 kg live weight. Half received a moderate level of feeding to 8 months of age and half a high level of feeding over this period; all were fed on a high level from 8 months to slaughter, their diet involving a concentrate mixture, lucerne hay and maize silage.

2. At slaughter weight, steers were 2·5% higher at withers than bulls, but other body measurements showed no significant difference.

3. Castrates needed a 3 to 8% longer fattening period depending on the feeding treatment.

4. Castration reduced the rate of live-weight gain by 4·9% over the whole rearing and fattening period, and by 8·0% over the fattening period only.

5. Bulls had better feed conversion ratios overall. Steers consumed more starch units per kg of live-weight gain—8·1% more over the whole rearing and fattening period and 9·8% over the fattening period. Consumption of digestible crude protein was also higher in steers.

6. The detrimental effect of castration was more strongly expressed on the HH feeding treatment. An increase in the concentration of the rations did not improve food conversion ratios.

To assess the variability of hormone values obtained from calves at an early age, plasma concentrations of prolactin, growth hormone, insulin and thyroxine were measured in blood samples taken twice-weekly from seven heifers maintained under commercial conditions during their first 110 days of life. With the possible exception of thyroxine, there was considerable variation in the concentration of each hormone in each animal throughout the period of sampling, thus indicating that twice-weekly sampling was inadequate for investigating differences in hormonal concentrations between cattle of different production potential. Although there were trends in the pattern of plasma hormone concentrations as the calves progressed from the pre-ruminant to ruminant states, few of the changes during the pre-weaning, weaning and post-weaning periods were consistent between animals.

Fattening performance and carcass characteristics were evaluated in 202 lambs sired by D’man (D), Timahdite (T) and terminal sires of the Ile-de-France (IF), Lacaune (L), and Mérinos Précoce (MP) breeds. Previous results had suggested that the three latter improved breeds had relatively similar growth and carcass performance in crossbreeding. They were, therefore, pooled in this study into one meat group breed (M) to facilitate comparisons between the five genotypes of interest: two purebreds (T, D), two single crosses (D ✕ T (DT), M ✕ T), and one three-breed cross (M ✕ DT). Results showed important improvements of performance in crossbred lambs especially those sired by meat breed rams. M ✕ T and M ✕ DT lambs grew fastest (238 and 256 g/day, respectively) and showed the best food conversion ratio. D purebred lambs realized the lowest fattening gains (196 g/day) while, T and D ✕ T lambs were intermediate (209 and 218 g/day, respectively). The D lambs deposited relatively more internal fat and relatively less subcutaneous backfat, and their carcasses had the lowest conformation score and smallest longissimus muscle area (11·23 cm2). The carcasses of M ✕ T and M ✕ DT crossbred lambs had larger longissimus muscle areas 13·97 and 13·88 cm2, respectively, thicker subcutaneous fat cover and better conformation scores than other genotypes. The effects of M as a terminal sire breed were favourable for the majority of fattening and carcass characteristics. The absence of differences between M ✕ T and M ✕ DT genotypes on post-weaning growth, food conversion ratio and on objective and subjective measurements of carcass conformation indicated that the infusion of 25% of D genes in M ✕ DT lambs did not affect post-weaning growth and carcass traits. The results on the use of M sires and DT dams, which have above average reproductive rates, in M ✕ DT crossbreeding indicate that a two-stage crossbreeding system could enhance the quantity and the quality of meat sheep production in Morocco.

The objective of this work was to investigate the expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) by Western blot (WB) in swine liver. Subsequently, the study aimed to apply this method to two experimental groups of heavy pigs raised in different confinement systems: intensive/indoor (Group A) and extensive/outdoor (Group B). Thirty-six crossbred commercial heavy pigs were divided as follows: Group A (eight castrated males and eight females) was equally distributed into two single-sex indoor pens (1.02 m2/pig); Group B (11 castrated males and nine females) was kept in one single (partially grassy and partially wooded) open area of about 6000 m2. Group A was slaughtered at 41 weeks of age (170 ± 9 kg) and Group B at 48 weeks of age (172 ± 13 kg). At the abattoir the livers of all the animals were collected and analyzed by WB assay in order to quantify the levels of HSP70. Moreover, a further liver sample was taken from the same animals in order to investigate the cellular localization of HSP70 by immunohistochemistry (IHC). The interaction between sex and group resulted statistically significant (P = 0.001). When stratified by sex, Group A showed significantly higher HSP70 values compared with Group B for both male and female subjects (P < 0.001). Stratifying by group, males showed significantly higher HSP70 values than females in Group A (P < 0.001), whereas no statistical differences were observed between sexes for Group B (P = 0.653). The IHC results evidenced cytoplasmic immunoreactivity in a granular pattern in both groups. The different expression pattern observed by WB could prove to be a useful tool in the assessment of pig health and welfare.

The magnitude of the discrepancy between conventional regression estimates of protein retention efficiency and theoretical estimates of synthesis efficiency indicates a major contribution ascribable to protein turn-over in the generally accepted estimates. As protein turn-over is known to be influenced by diet, feeding level and degree of maturity, this suggests the development of an estimator of protein efficiency that can be adapted for such differences. Therefore, based on generally accepted formulas for growth description, a method of estimating protein retention efficiency was developed which is flexible enough to accommodate different diets, feeding levels and degrees of maturity. Moreover, a formula was derived to convert one type of estimate to the other by regarding constant efficiency as equivalent to variable efficiency at the mid point of the estimation interval. Increase in scientific depth to this descriptive approach is provided by a theoretical consideration of a possible mechanism of hormonal control of protein synthesis and breakdown, ultimately expressed as proportionalities to powers of whole body protein (P). Molecular considerations on cellular synthesis and breakdown indicate a difference between breakdown and synthesis powers equal to (2/9)Q. The factor (2/9) is indicated by an argument based on insulinlike growth factor derived activator diffusion attributes by nucleus and body tissue geometries, while Q is equal to the proportion of nuclei activated by insulin-like growth factor. This proportion is likely to be a function of the concentration of growth factor in the blood. Hence, a linear relationship between intake and blood insulin-like growth factor concentration suggests that Q can be represented by a scaled transformation of intake, 0 ≤ Q ≤ 1, such that a value of Q = 1 represents ad libitum intake on a suitable diet and Q = 0 intake at the maintenance requirement. The quantification of breakdown and synthesis power differences by (2/9)Q leads to kP = {1 + [1 − (P/α)(2/9)Q]−1/6}−1, for turn-over related protein retention efficiency (kP), with α the limit value of P at maturity, so that 0 ≤ (P/α) ≤ 1. Experimental estimates, derived from direct estimates of whole body protein synthesis and breakdown at predetermined levels of intake, are in excellent agreement with the theoretical (2/9)Q in the power associated with (P/α) in kP. Furthermore, conventional multiple regression retention efficiencies satisfactorily approximate the turn-over related retention efficiency that can be calculated at a given level of intake for the mid point of the interval covered by the regression estimates.

Twelve British Friesian and 12 Ayrshire castrated male calves were fed ad libitum one of three complete diets of differing energy concentration from approximately 140 to 410 kg live weight. Differences in energy concentration of the diets were achieved by inclusion of different proportions of wet distiller's grains (WDG). Increasing the proportion of WDG in the diet caused reductions in performance. This effect was more marked with the Friesians than with the Ayrshires. The treatments had small and generally non-significant effects on carcass conformation and composition.

Twenty-seven groups of Finnish Landrace × Dorset Horn lambs each of 2 castrated males and 2 females were offered daily quantities of 180, 248 or 343 g of milk substitute dry matter (DM) for 21, 29 or 40 days. Concentrate pellets were available ad libitum and from 22 days of age 150 g of hay per week was offered. When the mean live weight of a group reached 35 kg two castrates and one female from each group were slaughtered and the carcasses appraised.

The growth rate and daily concentrate intake of lambs from 48 days of age until slaughter (reported -in this paper) were not affected by previous treatment, but lambs weaned at 40 days had a higher food conversion efficiency in this period (0·266 kg gain/kg feed DM) than those weaned at 21 days (0·244) or 29 days (0·232).

Delaying weaning from 21 to 29 and 40 days reduced overall concentrate DM intake from birth to slaughter (from 88·15 to 81·09 and 73·39 kg) but increased growth rate (261, 276 and 288 g/day) and the conversion of total DM consumed to live weight (0·300, 0·311 and 0·350 kg/kg). Increasing the daily allowance of milk substitute from 180 to 248 and 343 g/day also reduced total concentrate intake (84·18, 80·74 and 77·71 kg). Growth rate and food conversion efficiency tended to increase and concentrate DM intake to decrease when the same total quantity of milk substitute was given over a longer period. Castrated males grew faster than females (290 v. 260 g/day).

Weaning age generally had a greater effect than daily allowance of milk substitute on carcass measurements. Fat in the carcass tended to increase with increasing weaning age and significant interactions between daily allowance of milk substitute and weaning age were found for some carcass measurements.

Forty-five New Zealand White and 35 Californian doe rabbits, 8 months old and in the third parity of their 1st year of production were used in this study. Thirty-five does were concurrently pregnant and lactating, the remaining 45 does were non-pregnant. Milk samples were collected in colostrum and at the 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th and 35th days of lactation. Neither breed nor pregnancy status affected the does milk composition except for total phosphorus which was significantly lower (P < 0·05) in the pregnant does' milk. However the major components of milk except lactose, were significantly affected by stage of lactation. Both moisture: total solids and calcium: phosphorus ratios were the same (2:1) throughout the lactation. The ratio between retinol concentration in colostrum and in the 5th week was about 10:1. Specific gravity was significantly (P < 0·05) correlated with protein, lactose (positive) and fat (negative).

Early lactation parameters are difficult to estimate from commercial dairy records due to the small number of records available before the peak of production. A biological model of lactation was used with weekly milk records from a single Holstein herd to estimate these early lactation parameters and the secretion rate of milk from the average cell throughout lactation. A genetic analysis of the lactation curve parameters, calculated curve characteristics and secretion rate traits was undertaken. Early lactation traits were found to have little genetic variation and effectively zero heritability. Secretion rate traits for milk, protein, lactose and water were all moderately heritable and highly genetically correlated (>0.87) but fat secretion rate had lower genetic correlations with the other secretion rates. A similar pattern of correlations was seen between total lactation yield traits for fat, protein, lactose and water. The genetic correlations between the lactation curve traits and the secretion rate traits were calculated. Total milk yield, peak yield and maximum secretion potential were all highly correlated with milk, lactose and water secretion rates but less so with fat and protein secretion rates. In particular, fat secretion rate had a moderate to low genetic correlation with these lactation curve traits. Persistency of lactation was highly correlated with fat and protein secretion rates, more persistent lactations being associated with lower rates of secretion of these milk components. Similar levels of heritability were found, where trait genetic parameters were directly equivalent to those derived from the same dataset by random regression methods. However, by using a biological model of lactation to analyse lactation traits new insights into the biology of lactation are possible and ways to select cows on a range of lactation traits may be achieved.

The main objective of the present experiment was to investigate whether progesterone priming eliminates defective luteal function in seasonally anoestrous ewes induced to ovulate with pulsatile GnRH treatment by synchronizing the early stages of follicle development. This was achieved by suppressing and synchronizing the early stages of follicle development with bovine follicular fluid (bFF) and then investigating whether this was sufficient to eliminate defective luteal function following the induction of ovulation with GnRH. Ewes in group 1 (no. = 10) were injected s.c. with 2 ml bFF at 8-h intervals for a period of 3 days before the start of GnRH treatment. Animals in group 2 (no. = 10), ivhich served as positive controls, were given a single i.m. injection of 20 mg progesterone 3 days before the start of GnRH treatment, while those in group 3 (no. = 10), which served as negative controls, were injected with corn oil alone at this time. Ewes in all the three groups were induced to ovulate by administration of 2-hourly injections of GnRH (250 ng per injection) for 54 h. Frequent blood samples for LH, FSH, and oestradiol were collected around the time of both progesterone/bFF injections and GnRH treatment, as well as daily thereafter to monitor luteal function.

The bFF injections given to animals in group 1 resulted in a significant (P<0·001) suppression of FSH concentrations, followed by a rebound rise in concentrations after the cessation of treatment. GnRH treatment significantly (P < 0·05) increased both mean LH pulse amplitude and overall mean LH concentrations in all the three groups, while LH pulse frequency was increased only in non-bFF-treated ewes. Plasma oestradiol concentrations 24 h after the start of GnRH treatment were significantly (P < 0·05) higher in groups 2 and 3 compared with group 1. These differences in the patterns of oestradiol concentrations over time were associated with a significant (P <0·05) delay in the onset of the pre-ovulatory LH surge in ewes treated witli bFF (group 1). However, there was no difference in either the duration or the height of pre-ovulatory LH surge between the three treatment groups. Ewes in all three treatment groups ovulated in response to GnRH treatment. However, both laparoscopic examination and plasma progesterone concentrations revealed that the incidence of normal luteal function was significantly (P < 0·05) higher in group 2 (10/10) compared with groups 1 (2/10) and 3 (4/10), with no difference between groups 1 and 3. Overall, these results suggest that progesterone priming does not eliminate defective luteal function through synchronizing early stages offollicle development.

On the basis of experimental results, Forbes, Rees and Boas (1967) recommended that silage for pregnant ewes should have a DM content of at least 200 g/kg. Higher silage intakes and improved animal performance may be achieved by feeding silage of DM content in excess of this level.

Increases in lamb birth weight have been achieved with additional protein supplementation to ewes on hay based rations in late pregnancy (Clark and Speedy, 1981). The response to protein supplementation on silage based diets is less well documented.

In a 3 x 2 factorial experiment, 23A Border Leicester x Welsh Mountain in-lamb ewes, penned in groups of 18 or 21,were offered either an unwilted silage 199 g DM/kg) made with a formalin/formic acid additive (UA); a wilted, silage (287 g DM/kg) made with additive (WA) or a wilted silage (272 g DM/kg) made without additive (WO). The silages were offered ad-libitum from housing in January until lambing in mid-March.

In determining the milk yield of the sow by weighing the litter before and after suckling, loss of weight due to metabolic processes must be considered.

An experiment is described to investigate the loss of weight of piglets caused by metabolic processes between two consecutive weighings, and to investigate the relationship between this loss on the one hand and the body weight and the age of the piglets on the other. Weight changes of 15 litters of average 9·8 piglets were studied during 66 weighing periods of 16 minutes, by putting the pigs in a cage, fixed on a differential balance. Each weighing period consisted of 8 periods of 2 minutes, so that in all, loss of weight was studied during 528 2-minute periods.

Ruminal ammonia and blood urea levels were compared in fistulated steers eating paddy straw to appetite and given urea alone, urea plus oxalate, and complexes of urea with either formaldehyde (UFC) or oxalate (UOC), introduced into the rumen in a single daily dose. The solubilities of UFC and UOC in rumen liquor were 23·7 and 4·6% respectively of that of urea. Higher levels of ruminal ammonia and blood urea were recorded on urea than on other supplements.

Four steers from a group of eight British Friesian steers were implanted with 300 mg trenbolone acetate and 30 mg hexoestrol at the beginning of a 90-day trial period. The remainder were untreated. They were offered diets that varied in estimated content of metabolizable energy as follows (MJ/day): day 0 to 34 (period A), 100; day 35 to 60 (period B), 50; and day 61 to 90 (period C), 75 increasing to 110. Implanted steers gained significantly more live weight in periods A and C, and lost less in period B, than controls. Implanted steers had significantly elevated concentrations of plasma glucose in period A, and lower values for plasma urea and serum albumin throughout. Differences between control and implanted steers for the other blood constituents studied, including growth hormone, insulin and prolactin, were small and not significant. The main effects of changes in dietary energy intake on blood composition included significant increases in both groups of animals in the concentration of free fatty acids and growth hormone during underfeeding (period B). These concentrations decreased in period C, concomitant with significant increases in the concentrations of insulin and prolactin.
